Why the Tea-Party Movement Matters: ObamaCare Edition
by Paul A. RaheThere is on YouTube an hilarious video, drawn from C-SPAN2, of Max Baucus on the Senate floor denouncing his Republican colleagues and even more emphatically the Republican leadership for squelching attempts at what he piously describes as bipartisan healthcare reform.
The senior Senator from Montana has obviously had a snootful; he is having considerable difficulty in managing the English language; and he is evidently as mad as a wet hen.
I do not blame Baucus – neither for the excessive imbibing nor for being angry. He is now in a pickle. He was the point man for the Democrats’ healthcare initiative in the Senate, and for perfectly predicable reasons his constituents out in Montana are none too happy with him.
In the meantime, Baucus has been caught in the limelight trying to install his live-in girlfriend Melodee Hanes as a federal district attorney, and evidence has come to light that – some months before his wife of twenty-five years became aware that a divorce was even contemplated – he was meeting with a divorce lawyer, and the lady he now lives with (then a member of his Senate staff and married herself) was in attendance as well.
It is, of course, perfectly possible that this last tidbit is indicative of nothing and that there was no hanky-panky going on. But Baucus’s constituents may have trouble imagining why Melodee Hanes should have been there unless she was – how shall I say? – an interested party.
These are the times that try a Senator’s soul.
I do not blame Baucus for being upset. Back in January, it looked as if everything was coming up roses. The pharmaceutical industry had been beaten into submission; the insurance industry was on board. The American Medical Association had been bought off, and he knew that it would not be hard to mollify the American Association of Retired Persons.
Moreover, Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) seemed to be prepared to give the Democrats a measure of bipartisan cover, and he had every reason to hope that he would emerge as a hero to near-universal applause.
Senator Baucus is wrong, however, in singling out Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) and the others in the Republican leadership for obloquy. I do not doubt that McConnell let Grassley and Snowe know that, if they played ball with Baucus, they could expect little, if any help down the road from him.
But, let’s face it, in January, McConnell had little in the way of leverage. The Democrats had just won a smashing victory in the elections for the Senate and the House. He was in an unenviable position, and he could hardly suppose that he could impose any discipline on his caucus.
It was the Tea-Party explosion in the Spring and the even larger explosion that took place in the town halls in August that made the difference. The Democrats had bought off the special interests, but they had neglected to consider the American people – and thanks to the looting embedded in the so-called “stimulus” bill and what the latter promised to do to the federal deficit, those who paid attention to what was going on were hopping mad, and their fury soon spread to retirees and those able to foresee retirement when the members of these two groups realized that the Democrats were intent on gutting Medicare and rationing healthcare for seniors.
Charles Grassley is living proof of the vital importance of the Tea-Party Movement. At the beginning of August, he was ready to deal. By the time that he had toured Iowa during the recess, however, he knew that his career was on the line, and he made a 180 degree turn. It took Olympia Snowe a bit longer to wake up to the new reality, but she, too, soon fell in line.
And that left poor Max, who had always masqueraded as a moderate, twisting, twisting in the wind.
In all of this, there is a moral. For the defense of their interests, the American people have to look to themselves. They cannot look to the Democratic Party, and, over the next few years, they must make sure that Republicans like Grassley and Snowe know what is good for them. If they do, they can turn what tends to be a party of patronage, only marginally less corrupt than the alternative, into a genuine party of principle committed to rolling back the administrative state.
If I may borrow a line from Don Corleone, the Tea-Party Movement must make the Republicans an offer the latter cannot refuse.
As for Max Baucus, the Tea-Partyers in Montana should send him a case of his favorite tipple. He is going to need it.

"Melodee"?
Sounds like a real nice girl there, Maxie. Did you recruit her from the Spearmint Rhino?
Here's Max at a recent Christmas Party.
Looks like the post-debate atmosphere is shaping up as an exercise in dread – dread of what the people will say about this travesty that has been shoved down our throats. It's not uncommon for an unfaithful husband to get a snootful before going home to an angry wife. I expect we'll be seeing more Democrats going off the rails in the weeks ahead.
spuds is crocked, what a wonderful life.
LOSER!!!
Give me liberty or give Max a drink…
I fell in lust with a commie girl once, beautiful smile, nice personality… fortunately I could not get her a cushy job in D.C. and she dumped me.
Courage?..Courage you say Max? Your courage appears to come from a bottle, I may have been seeking courage as well if I were in your position of defending this atrocity.
The American people need to hold elected officials accountable!!!!! It is time these men (and women) stop hiding behind the safety net of being a "Moderate", when they themselves vote and help push through a preposterous and ridiculously liberal health care bill and then go along with the big lie about the cost and the so called "savings".
Vote all the Bums that voted yes for this Helathcare bill out of office!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Each one of them should be faced with the simple question thtat if this is such a great bill then why is there a provision that excludes them and their families???????
It should illegal for government to exclude themselves from anything they vote on. If it isn't good enough for them, then why is it good enough for the American people????????
If the tea party takes off as a third party; first I am behind them and second, I would love to see them commit to either a law or perhaps even an amendment that states in clear and simple language that goverment can not exclude themselves from any laws or bills they impose on the American people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sen. Foster Brooks, MT (D)
Whooooaaa! Was he, the late Teddy K. & Rudolph having a contest?
What a low-life POS that guy is. He has the audacity to speak to anyone about bipartisanship? The dems wouldn't know what bipartisanship is if it bit them in the butt. This Obumble healthcare bill will be an abject failure and the lowly dems will be standing in the corner on this one by themsleves. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
Keep it up America we have the left on their heels. Do not let politicians hide behind the moderate moniker, keep them exposed, as to who they are, devout government loving statist. Soon it will be 2010, 2010, 2010…
Hey now! Don't be dissing Foster Brooks that way!
That is a freaky picture. I hope it gets some quility air time or net time. He looks like the emporer from star wars. Maybe someone could photoshop .
Everyone in Montana knows Max is nothing but a horses ass.
Along with being a serial philanderer, he is a drunken gasbag.
He's drunk. Does his vote for the biggest mess ever actually count?? Can drunk lawyer's vote on the senate floor and is it legal????
The A-hole is drunk with power. Max, the hangover is going to be a bitch.
Sen Bacanal (D-RUNK) is providing enough of a case to his constituents that his career dissipation light should be going into high gear…
This is the same guy who named his kid Zeno … alcohol abuse indeed.
Let's get them all drunk and see how they vote!
The mendacity of the present control of our government is incomprehensible to majority of citizens of this country. It has through the efforts of Breitbart’s Big Government website that we have learned the depth of corruption of this left winged socialist group and their agenda. Breitbart has shown us the following:
Climategate exposure showed us clearly that the false manipulated data is nothing but a power move to redistributing the wealth and to use this to make money by a select few on a “carbon trading” scheme.
The depth of corruption of ACORN was exposed in using the tax payer’s money in the voter campaign fraud and manipulation to gain control of this government and their other illegal practices.
The numerous slimy non-profits that have been exposed which serve no purpose but to intimidate and produce the left propaganda.
The biased left winged media and their involvement in covering up true news stories and not reporting the facts.
Thanks Andrew for waking us up. Now it is up to us to make this change of leadership happen.
[...] we can defeat this new advance of totalitarianism on the Hill in the next couple months, it will be due to them. And I hope that this is the end of Max Baucus political career. Not to mention many others’ [...]
Yes.
It is amazing he didn't name the kid Moon Unit, or Dweezil.
He moved into Ted Kennedys old office and found the stash .. yea baby !!!!!!
The present form of government of this country is no longer following the constitution on which this country was founded. What this country was founded on was the right of each citizen from government interference, the pursue of happiness, and enjoy the fruits of our own labor and worship. This present American government is assuming control over every aspect of our freedom.
And who is to blame? First we need to look to our own self’s. We have been asleep at the wheel. Next, we need to look at the total lack of the present day representatives in Washington who think we work for them and not the other way around.
We need to look at the UN’s worldwide socialism push with their involvement in the World Trade Organization, the Climategate scandal ect. And we the people of this country have been paying the bulk of the cost for the UN. Hey Ted Turner you need to ask for a refund of the $$’s you gave this group.
The average American Citizen is now awake and the time is now.
I can't drive a vehicle or fly an airplane after drinking, but it's OK for our lawmakers to make laws under the influence?
I propose that every Congressman must pass a breathalyzer test and be searched for hip-flasks before entering the chamber.
EEWWWW!
Baucus will probably be rewarded by the other power drunk Dems for his performance.
I wonder how much we paid for him to get smashed at lunch and then "represent" us on the floor of the senate? The Founding Fathers would be so proud.
nothing will come of this… this is EXACTLY the kind of thing the media will ignore, and the democratic leadership will excuse with a wave of their hand. in the end, this will add more fuel to the fire for those that are not insane with the need to control the lives of others.
He has a lot of gall to even pretend that the health care bill was a bipartisan effort especially after all the flap in the media about the republicans playing politics.
I've heard more articulate drunks at the better neighborhood bars.
The Tea Party movement , sadly, remains the most realistic avenue to getting back to govt by the people.
I say sadly because Republican power brokers show no signs of being led by the people, nor providing a renewed conservatism themselves. It's sad because the danger is continuation of a deeply divided Republican Party, resulting in continued ObamaWorld.
If Republican loyalists fail to incorporate the natural outrage of Tea Partiers in meaningful ways, then it's probably time for a 3rd Party, relevant to true conservatism.
has anyone noticed how much this guy looks like David Letterman? WTF! Is the left running a clone machine or what!
Unfortunately, Max is my senator. It is inexplicable that we keep reelecting him. I actually don't think he is drunk, I have heard him speak before. He natually seems unable to construct an entire sentence. Or maybe, he's drunk all the time. Hmm.
I agree with you Ohio_Mom, he's following in Ted Kennedy's footsteps, another disgrace.
Who punched him in the nose? We have some real jewels in our congress, do we not? Drinking on the job should be means for dismissal, but if you are a privileged, philandering politician, you are hunky-dory. Must have had one of those Kennedy/Dodd lunch breaks.
Vote them all out in 2010/2012, period. The Libs screwed us and the so-called "moderates" in BOTH parties sold us out for votes and money. All in all, they are all lieing, crooked scumbags and MUST go. By vote or by force, one way or the other, we must take back our Republic.
didn't Jimmy Buffett do a song like that? "Let's all get drunk and screw (the country)"
This is what we send to Washington? This?
I can just imagine what Baucus is going through. Most of us have done or seen something really bad in our lifetimes. Afterward there are moments of panic and sleepless nights. The pain in Baucus' stomach must be unbearable.
Good post! Must have had a four or five Martini lunch. Makes me feel really comfortable knowing our congress is a bunch of drunken fools, passing legislation directed at us, but not them.
i'm guessing that this senator has no issues with sleeping at night.
By far the best explanation and description of the Teaparty movement I have heard yet.
does anyone else find it hilarious the irony of the last name of this senator, as paralleled to the Greek God Of Wine, Bacchus?
Montana's are smart not to remember this and not re-elect him again – he is in his 6th term – how does he do it???
We have Montana to thank for this Teddy Kennedy Clone. So, thanks for nothing.
New voice of the Democratic party and health care reform….Jack Daniels.
Go ahead, give this jerk-off another drink. Think of it eveyone, these bozos are running the country! It scares hell out of me. Baucus needs a long, long vacation. It's clear, he's in over his head and needs alcohol to keep his mind clear to make really big decisions????????????

Is this Senator "Otis" Baucus ? He sounds like Otis on Mayberry. Baucus makes us proud. LUI, legislating Under the Influence.
Here in Montana, the stutter/stumble bum senator is known as 'Mad Max'. I'm sure that Mad Max knows his senate career is over, however, he'll be around for four more years.
What we can do is throw out his completely useless chubby cohort Tester in 2010. This simpleton never had an original thought in his life. If Pinky Reid didn't show him the toilet, he'd pee in his pants.
yep, some things you just can't make up…
This explains a lot. The only way they can come up with half the crap they put in these bills is if they were drunk or high. Thank you for confirming my suspisions Max.
Like many other Americans, I am deeply concerned about our nation’s future.
The Weekly Standard of December 21, 2009, reports that “a survey commissioned by the American Revolution Center” found that “when it came to a simple test of knowledge about the founding [of the United States of America], nearly 83 percent of . . . Americans failed.”
In the face of this woeful ignorance, the Constitution of the United States of America is under an unprecedented attack by Barack Obama and his runaway Democrat Party, aided and abetted by the complicit mainstream media.
Yet with a few notable exceptions there is hardly any knowledgeable defense of our founding document to be found anywhere.
Not on radio or television. Not in the press. Not at the grassroots. Certainly not in academia. Nor, sadly, among most Republicans, Conservatives and even Libertarians. Most of the Media’s “instant,” pontificating constitutional experts, especially those on national television, do more harm than good because they spread disinformation that is neither knowledgeable nor principled.
While many “tea party” activists and other patriots are valiantly trying to fight for core constitutional values, they’re disarmed because they have been taught little about American constitutional law. The fact is that everyone fighting for America today, in order to defend the Constitution, must know the answers to countless crucial questions.
Just a few examples:
Can Congress constitutionally require Americans to buy medical insurance?
• Did Congress lack the constitutional power to give a lame-duck, unelected treasury secretary unchecked and unsupervised power to dispense a trillion dollars of taxpayer money?
• Does Obama have the constitutional power to appoint unaccountable “czars” to rule over virtually every aspect of our lives?
• Are American citizens about to be stripped of their constitutional “right to bear arms”?
• What are “unenumerated” constitutional rights, and why have they never been recognized?
• Can racial quotas ever be eliminated entirely?
Where does the Constitution say that convicts are entitled to law libraries?
The answers to these and scores of other questions about America’s Constitution will, for good or ill, determine much about the future of the United States of our nation.
Those who are committed to fighting for that future must acquire a basic understanding of the Constitution's origins and birth, its written text, the manner in which it has been deliberately violated, and the consequences of how it has been misinterpreted by collectivists and statists.
Because of the importance of this struggle, and to learn more about America’s Constitution, please visit http://www.henrymarkholzer.citymax.com/f/con_law_course….
Hopefully, Montana will send us a replacement for this drunk and another one for his Dem. partner.
Hopefully California will send us replacements for Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein, Waxman and any other Leftie you have out there.
I know our Moderate (HA!!) Sen. Bayh will not get my vote in Nov. 2010! Nor will Visclosky, my District Rep.!
Have you seen this? http://www.impeachobamacampaign.com I don't think we'll have our country if we wait till 2012.
What he said was true. Don't care if he was drunk or not.
Stop the press!!! Get the media and let them know that he needs to resign! Of course if he was a Republican, this is exactly what was gonna happen. But because he's a Dem, he gets a pass.
This is pathedic.
Excellent point!
Any wonder why Max's marriage of 25 years fell apart?
Too late.
It is likely that drunkenness is requirement for voting for crap.
Because he was screwing a younger bimbo.
So much for his family values.
Yeah, they tried to work with "the other side of the aisle!" What a total lie. "The other side of the aisle were totally shut out of those midnight meetings in Reid's office. Seems to me, old drunk Baucus is coming apart at the seams because this mess is totally a democratic failure. "The other side of the aisle" listened to their constituency, your side didn't philandering Baucus! Nelson, Landrieu and others are probably sunk for future elections, thanks to your desire to appease the Pelosi/Reid/man-child faction of your party. You told your constituents to "go to hell!"
What you said!
Bacchus, was after all, the Roman god of wine and merriment. Senator Baucus, you're no god, Roman or otherwise. Get out of our government!
Why isn't he drug tested like any other American on their job. He is working right?
Good job know your rights, as you know That little document is the foundation what we are and what we as a counrtry have established. And today it is the only thing that protects us from the designs the NWO infected current administration.
Your activities are laudable.
If drunkenness leads to debauchery, how can a drunk ever maintain strong family values? And if you’re giving a speech on the Senate floor after drinking, you’re not just a drinker, you ARE a “drunk.”
Max Baucus says, "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me." I think he should have the frontal lobotomy.
I ask you Mr. Baucus, where is the courage in your party to stand up against the president's socialist agenda, and instead stand up for the American people?
I know they have metal detectors. Might be time to upgrade the system with breathalyzers.
What is the FINE to be DRUNK in public? This being on TV thru the Internet makes it Public.
Anyone else on the street would have been put in the slammer to sleep it off.
Being Drunk on the JOB….priceless………We Americans should CAN is ASS….Pronto….
Max stumbling through the halls of Congress with fifth of liquid cajones in hand yelling……Do it for Teddy….Do it for Teddy……..Do it for Teddy
Nothing like a spot of Tea to sober up a drunken senator.
Hey Max, this cup is on us.
Maybe the Republicans didn't vote for this bill because the entire bill "sucked". Bi-partisanship, gimme a break!! The Dems were going to force this through no matter what, just so Obonehead can put this feather in his cap.
We need to file these lifelong politicians away in file 13 for the next few elections. Then, maybe something can be done about all the influence the lobbyists have. Fire Incumbent Legislators Everywhere.
Well, the bar has been set to a new low and Max got there first. Your government hard at work.
Thanks…
My son who is in his 20's says if he "showed up to work like this he would be fired. Why can't we fire him!"
Leave it to a young person to cut right to the obvious. Does Montana have a recall process?

Now the dems. embaress the USA with a drunken rant from the floor of the senate. Good going stubum.
Bluecollarbytes, you are part of the problem: Why are you seeking leadership? Why aren't you providing leadership, instead?
Ours is a two party system by design, so voting a third party is akin to a wasted vote – See Clinton/Bush/Perot. The solution is to populate the party closer to your views with folks who share your views.
If you don't like the Republican brand, change the Republican brand at the local level.
Ivan
so, Ivan .. you're saying you agree, with the exception of my grammar?
I know upright folks from Montana. The problem is being a jackass is near to a prerequisite for working as an elected office holder these days. No upright man would want the job! HA!
HAHAHA!!! The folks who did vote for it admitted it sucked!
I know the feeling, and we're living the consequences of the sentiment. Rs need to get it sorted in a hurry, folks are fed up all around.
I knew this cycle was going to be a helluva show, I underestimated it at that.

We'll trade you guys Max for Benedict Arlen here in Pennsyltucky, Max is more fun to watch…..
Drunks speaking from the floor of the Senate A known terrorist who was outed by his Father from gets aboard a jet liner and nearly succeeding in blowing it up. The government can’t do anything right. That is why it makes no sense to hand over a seventh of the US economy to the power mongers in DC who used lies and dirty back room deals to shovel down our throats their take over of health care. Deficit Reduction, a lie: According to the CBO, the Democrats double counted the 500 billion dollar cut to Medicare. The fact is you can't use the cuts to Medicare to cut the deficit while at the same time using the same cuts to fund a trillion dollar new entitlement program. No tax increases for the Middle Class is a lie: The Health Care Reform Bill increases at least nine taxes that the Middle Class will have to pay including taxes on tanning salons and taxes on Medical devices. Health Care Reform will "save" Medicare is a lie for two big reasons: (1) A "death panel" will be established that is not subject to legal litigation or Congressional oversight with out a two thirds majority vote The government "death panel" has been granted the power to dictate what procedures, if any, are allowable for Medicare patients. (2) There is no other way of cutting 500 billion dollar out of the Medicare budget when in the next few years 20 million new people will be added to the roles without the government drastically slashing Medical Care for Seniors which will turn Seniors into an “undesirable” class of citizen when it come to health care. Some might say the Democrats “Final Solution“ to “save“ Medicare is to spend the money cut from Medicare on more “desirable” people in their view. Hmmm
maybe we should all take obama's advice when he said "if they bring a knife to the fight, we'll bring a gun"
Montana Voters: Help recall Senator Baucus!
http://www.PetitionOnline.com/fltp001/petition.ht...
I took no exception to your grammar, cyclonaut. I was merely making the case that, not only will Baucus's bad behavior be ignored as bad behavior, it will be hailed as something courageous and laudable. It will be the cause for re-electing the lecherous lush when his term is up for renewal. That's all I was saying.
Ivan
and ill trade you harry reid for both bacchus and spector. he has screwed over nevada seniors by literally selling his soul to the devil obama and i hope they both burn in HELL!!!
i agree with you. we're living in an upside down world right now. what is good for the Deemocrats is bad for the the country.
Gives BELTway new meaning I suppose. A perfect metaphor for Baucus and the libs…drunk with power.
Maybe ho was at BHO's beer summit partying!
Get after the "Moderates"…
The TEA party is not a political party, folks. The TEA is a political FORCE, a weapon, if you will. Its the cop on the street, watching the neighborhood sliding into anarchy, and deciding to put an end to it…
It is raw, naked aggression against the political class, both Democrat (because they're the most egregious), AND Republican (because they're the sneakiest), that do not hold the line against power being concentrated against the PEOPLE…
It is far more useful to have the TEA, (let's not forget that it means Taxed Enough Already) movement free to respond aggressively against ANY wildfire Congress and a President decides to set, rather than frozen into inactivity trying to determine if a particular policy that is postulated is of benefit to one political party or another…
That sort of realpolitik thinking is what got us into this mess in the first place…
"I don't blame Baucus for excessive imbibing nor for being angry. He is in a pickle!" For clarification, he isn't "in a pickle." He appears to be just pickled, period. Going against the will of the people will do that to you! Now go kiss up to your leader, Max.
That's W.C. (Fields) Baucus My little Chickadee!
"To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
Congress has refused Their Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
Congress has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.
Congress has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving Their Assent to Their Acts of pretended Legislation
For protecting Their Colleagues , by a mock Trials and Reviews, from punishment for any Crimes and Misdemeanors which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States.
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent
For taking away our Charters and Contracts, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Government, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people."

There was a time when being a man from Montana meant you were a man's man, a clear speaking honorable man, one you could trust on a hand shake. Are there any real men in Montana anymore..or have they all moved to Idaho? If you're in Montana and you're a man, it's time to speak up.
You know what the insane thing is? They sound the same drunk or sober, makes you wonder if the bills are all written over a 5th of Vodka.
Would not surprise me, if I was a traitorous piece of thieving filth I would have to be drunk all the time as well.
Think this video through. Like in a movie when the scene ends or begins – what were they doing before or after the scene that you don't see? So Max, before coming onto the floor, stood around with someone back in his office, solving all our problems on InsuranceCare no doubt, while having one, then another, then another, sitting down and chatting with still others, having yet another drink, all in a time span short enough to be obviously at least 1.0 or 1.2 should a breathalyzer be applied. This job for him, and so many other politicians, has become so absolute, so back-of-the-hand, so comfortable to him in determining what is best for us, that he is also perfectly comfortable with coming out on the floor of the House in a drunken state to debate and chastise others. After which he goes back into his little chambers with a pat on the back from his other drunken 'colleagues' while they sit down to hash out some more rules for us to follow over another drink, then another.
I think there should be a new organization funded by the stimulus – CADP – Citizens Against Drunk Politicians.
Oh wait, there already is one; the American Voter.
SELF INTEREST OR SELF-CENTERED
This is directed at those who admire and criticize Ayn Rand’s beliefs about people who stand on their own feet. Most who criticize Rand say she promoted selfishness, thereby greed, which is self-centered and anti-individual creativity, therefore, anti-Rand. Rand admired the creative individual, such as James Jerome Hill, on whom she was reputed to have based her character Dabney Taggart in Atlas Shrugged. If we look at Howard Roark’s summation to the jury, from Fountainhead, we do not see a self-centered individual destroying his work. Were he greedy, he would have simply accepted his payment. We see a self-interested, other- and outer-centered individual in love with his own dreams and creations, as one would love a spouse, child or family and refuse to allow them to be assaulted. Though love for anything spiritual may be missing, a great idea or vision also measures up to that which is spiritual, and that view is not inconsistent with Christianity. Claysamerica.com.

BREAKING NEWS - Senator Max Baucus D-Montana, while driving through Missoula, spied a sign which read, "Drink Canada Dry".
Senator Max Baucus D-Montana was last seen speeding north on US-93 to take up the challenge.
Ivan
Cyclonaut, Baucus is a Democrat – with a capital D – and as with all capital D Democrats, being a drunk or a philanderer, or better yet, a drunk AND a philanderer is considered resume enhancement.
If he were a Republican, the same behavior would be a career ender. Double-standard? Nah, just business-as-usual.

In the immortal words of a tippler who was Prime Minister of New Zealand – Robert D Muldoon "not drunk, just tired and emotional!"
Disgusting drunk!
Dood, as the son of a man who literally spent his entire adult life working for a 3rd political party, I'm well aware of the difficulties in gaining traction for political interests outside of the 2 Party 'System'.
I've never voted for a Democrat, not because I'm a Republican, but because the choice was Always between what we see now, and Republicans who would only meet socialist goals halfway.
In case you haven't noticed, voters (even the moderates) are getting increasingly fed up with the void of conservative leadership in the bowels of the Republican Party. Would Ronald Reagan recognize the current leadership? It might remind him of Gerald Ford, or Pres H Bush. The first Bush in fact helped pave the way to a more muddled Party.
The survival of the America I've known does not depend on the survival of any one political Party. Republicans came into power on a great issue, that of slavery. They now risk becoming irrelevant as the me-to folks who acquiesce to long term Leftist goals albeit it at a slower, 'centrist' pace. They stubbornly reuse to take up the clarion call of the people who have had enough of political careers taking precedence over political philosophy and Proven American values.
If "I" am part of the problem", then so to are the many millions of folks who are now saying "these are lines that must not be crossed". I happen to think that apologists for continued Republican cowardice is more of a problem than those who simply recognize the reality.
I don't throw away my votes on protest candidates. I would not vote for any 3rd party candidate unless I believed he/she could win. I never bought into Perot's cartoon candidacy. But unless the Republican Party gets its ideological act in order, all we have to look forward to (and live with) is a consolidation of some level of Leftist achievement, which becomes the new starting point of debate. McCain did much to move this line.
What the Tea Party represents at the moment is the clearest form of wide opposition to ObamaWorld And 'politics as usual'. I look forward to professional Republicans getting their act in order. It would be the shortest route to a return to some sanity and common sense, if it happens.
Counting on, relying on Republicans to switch to ideological conservatism is like assuming that Global Warmists will now reassess their positions in lieu of the revelations of GW fraud.
The future has not been written yet, on the survival of Republicans OR the country itself. It's premature to claim what we have now is what we'll always have because we've always had it. Perhaps the Republican Party is infused with new blood. Perhaps it continues to become more irrelevant , and 50 years from now we're discussing Lights Out on the last Republican loyalists.
they set the bar low so senators can still reach their drinks while lying on the floor…
I truly believe our ONLY hope is to get Scott BRown elected in the MA special election! The Dems could care less what is in the final bill, what it costs, how unpopular….they haven't read it and have no plans to…doesn't effect them so really who gives a fig…..they WILL vote yes no matter what…all that so called in fighting is just for show…our only hope is to help the Republican Scott Brown get elected and take away Reids 60th vote. It CAN be done…he is a good candiate…MA is as mad and scared as the rest of us and a Kennedy is running as a 3rd party candidate…if this guy has the resources and the advisors he can do it!!!!!!!!!!
"Law Enforcement" enables this swill. Make sure you thank them appropriately.

excellent post, paul rahe. i am trying to share your optimism but year after year i see the products of the federally controlled educational system as they perambulate about buying junk at wal mart or best buy on their way to eat fake food at olive trap or lobster garden and i shake my head and wonder what those founding fathers would make of how quickly we are losing our souls to wondrous prosperity.
however, your work is superior and though i fret for the outcome, the battle must be waged.
I am glad this ass hat who is selling us down the river was able to get drunk before he goes to work. Is having a sound mind no longer important?
"Hey, what happened to your country? The US use to be top dog, now you are a pathetic socialist mess.."
"My senator was a drunk…"
