Pork Report: September 28, 2009 **LINKS FIXED**
by The Pork ReportFrom the office of Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK). Today’s edition identifies at least $11 million in wasteful Washington spending:
- Many Republican Senators complain about Obama spending policies, then vote for the spending increases
- Nearly $10 billion in stimulus aid to repair the nation’s tattered highways has largely bypassed areas where roads are in the worst shape
- The Federal Aviation Administration will spend over $10 million on an airstrip that has no demonstrated need, doesn’t meet the FAA’s minimum quota for air traffic, and is only 11 miles away from an existing airport
- AIDS Pork: San Francisco continues to receives federal funding for AIDS patients who died decades ago
- Only 22 percent of Defense Travel System users are happy with the problem-plagued $500 million government travel system
- American Jazz Museum in Missouri receives $300,000 congressional earmark

Is there a NIRVANA for future congressional legislation ? A world where single bill legislation addresses a real and remedial concern and only THAT concern ? No pork attached ? No special interest spending attached ?
ARRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH ! It was a dream…damn it !
Tom Coburn is a rising star to watch. He is a good decent man, and will be a contender in 2012.
Background link, Cowboy ??
Murtha needs his airport, Reid needs his train, Pelosi needs her plane.
I need a job!
Can anyone tell me how many Refounders we have yet? Last I heard, there are three.
The voters should pass a constitutional amendment using the process where 2/3 of the state legislatures vote for the amendment. The amendment should stipulate that all bills address one issue and only one issue. The amendment should further stipulate that complex bills contain a short summary which explains in plain English what the bill says. There should also be a length limit on the number of words that can be in a bill. Complex bills should be broken down into multiple, simpler bills, each addressing one issue.
There should be a requirement that all bills be posted on the internet and available in hard copy to anyone who wants one at least 30 days prior to a vote on the bill.
Amendments should be required to address the issue in the bill, amendments should not be allowed to introduce totally new topics.
If you know… When is Glenn going to speak about the data from Refounder's ? I assume it is all being currently researched for total accuracy.
Coburn is definately a keeper and a new face for 2012. Here's an editorial of his in the WSJ this month:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204...
I do not have any link, but can maybe find one. I simply speak from personal experience. He is a good man, with good solid hinterland values.
God is great, beer is good and People Are Crazy.
Sorry, can't help you with a job. We are in the recession.
I'd buy ya a beer……….
I wish I could see the show every day so I could keep up… but I wouldn't think he would discuss it. He's sworn complete anonymity to everyone who steps up and if he's trying to recruit them to basically stage a coup… then his word to them and anything said between them has to remain hush-hush. I don't need to know the details — I just need to know that there are 56 HONEST people in DC who want our country back and are willing to go all the way with this! I wish Glenn would put a Refounder counter on his website.

I don't think a jazz museum is such a waste. Why not? I'm pretty sure the Cowboy Hall of Fame has gotten federal money.
The Jazz museum got money in other admins, too. http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/arti...
Do you think it did?
I don't know, so I caint comment, but I'd hazard a guess that the Maplethorpe Exhibit got a grant from the NEA.
Become a STATE DELEGATE in your community and start having say on WHO IS ACTUALLY representing your party. It's time to community organize people. WE MUST TAKE IT ALL BACK!!! http://www.theSTARforum.org
I agree with the proposed bill requirements but the following items should be enacted to control the people holding elected office who vote on the bill. We the people MUST control the government!
Term Limits MAXIMUM TWO TERMS in any elected public office The President is limited to two terms in office, the same limit should apply to all elective offices, NO MORE 'professional' politicians remaining in the same office, term after term.. Limit allows different levels of public office, i.e. Two terms in HR, two terms in Senate, two terms as President. Limits also applicable to Lobbyists and Advisors.
Perks: Political perks ONLY apply while actually holding elective office. Bureaucrats, non-office holders contribute to the same 'Social Security' plan and are covered by the same retirement and health insurance rules and/or benefits as all other citizens except during actual terms of public service. Only the President and retired Military Service people entitled to Government paid retirement and medical benefits not available to the general public.
Actually, the Pork Report seems kinda weak. The pork coming out of this government is so excessive that 5 or 6 points for maybe 20 billion seems like NOTHING.
Maybe Mr. Breitbart should consider a new website – BIGPORK – to be 100% dedicated to government waste? It could become his biggest and most important web site to date.
I am Sanmon. Tried to find that Jazz Museum in Missouri. What is so disturbing is that whoever procured it will be PROUD of it. I have an awful feeling it is in Carnahan's district.
It's only Monday and that is the best Idea for the week!
I watched Coburn's annoucement from the summer of his decision to run for reelection and gained so much respect for him and his fight for the values and princples of this country.
The people in Washington fighting against this Marxist tide do so at a great personal cost. They need our support.
Coburn held some great town hall meetings this summer in Oklahoma on the Health Care debate. He talks straight, and honestly.
I'll go out on a limb and make a prediction: "The Obama" is done, toast, emasculated.
I just watched those average, American women on Glenn Beck, and they are fed up, and they aren't going to take it anymore.
The O-pray Winfreys, the Gals on The View, the Babawa Streisand's, the Maxine Waters' and Shelia Jackson-Lee's, the Hillary Clinton's and the Madame Pelosi's, the Michelle Obama's, the NOW Gang and the rest of their Liberal Fascist Militant ilk had better crawl in a hole in hide.
The decent women of America are about to stand up and speak, and Washington will be terrified………
I like the idea of a BigPork website. The wasteful spending is disgraceful. Maybe we need to demand a new Contract with America that would include a No Earmarks Pledge. And what about foreign aid? I remember hearing President Obama saying we would help rebuild Gaza? We don't get to hear much about what goes on with foreign spending…
I would take it further. End 100% of ALL foreign aid, to every country. Let them fend for themselves. Cut all aid to the UN and withdraw from it. Let them re-locate to Iran, Venezuela, Cuba or Libya.
Tom Coburn is great and makes me proud to be from Oklahoma. It takes him a little longer to answer his mail because he reads every single email or letter he gets and actually gives an honest and thoughtful answer. I could not think of a better person to be president. Many of us would be proud of our country again.
Yes. I agree with you 100%
You have to start somewhere.
Like the old saying: " A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking about real money".
To that I say GO GIRLS, GO GET UM!
Senator Tom Coburn is the best. He is a great doctor (he delivered 3 of my 4 children), a great senator and a great christian man. If we could send more people like him to Washington they could turn this country around. He has been covering this pork subject on his website all along. I'm so happy it is going to be in biggovernment.com now because it is one of my new favorite sites to get the real news. Glenn Beck should talk to Coburn. He would make a great re-founder.
I like this idea. People should know where their tax dollars are going and to actually see who is wasting their money!
That used to be a million here, a million there, but got upped lately with all the pork. Originally uttered by Everett Dirksen many years back.
Right off, drop the hard copy requirement. Eco-mentalists would whine about the trees slaughtered (never mind they come from farms). Beyond that it would be an instant union give-away, from paper making to printing to bulk delivery to the Post Office delivering all of them. They have yet to unionize electrons, so let's keep it online.
The thirty days sounds good, except for a major problem, it will give Congress 30 days of virtual vacation. They will get to the end of a session, and as soon as 29 days hits they know they will not be passing anything new so a lot of work goes away, most of the job is committee work crafting bills. Now they work until the last hour trying to get stuff through, with 30 posting days all they have to do is phone in a few votes on anything in the pipeline as it comes up.
When the stimulus package first came out I checked the projects in Baton Rouge. The largest one was not only shovel ready, but 50% complete when the legislation passed. It was completed about the time any funds could have arrived. It was not a repair but a rerouting of a 4 lane highway away from the runway on the north side of a local airport. It is a very short re-route but includes a small bridge which crosses a drainage ditch. It is right in front of a new CocaCola bottling plant.
Andrew does it again! Partnering with, and drawing deserved attention to my favorite Senator, Tom Coburn. Wish he was mine; though he will have whatever I can spare as a donation for whatever office he pursues. He is a national treasure.
Yeah, I have a feeling it could be a while, depending on what kind of info they give him, and where it leads. We'll see
I agree….they don't know about the silent women who are about to take the bulls**t but the horns.

This is great. My biggest question is why in the heck is MY senator, Mitch McConnell, not the one gathering and publishing these facts??? Regardless, I can support anyone who pulls the data and makes it public. I don't care if its Republican or Democrat wastefulness. Let the light shine on what is really happening in government. That is the only way things get corrected.
And Cowboy Logic is correct: the mothers in this country are not going to put up with this. You know, we do a lot of balancing budgets, making decisions about what gets paid and what has to wait, whether someone in our family really needs a doctor or a pain killer. We know what works and what doesn't. So when the administration says "This won't add one cent to the budget", we can't help but laugh. Obviously our elected officials were not paying attention in Math class. On a more fundamental level, this stirs our "mother bear" senses. You don't threaten our kids without raising our ire. Future generations are going to be in debt, not like we are… but in ways we cannot even conceptualize. Their liberties are in question and government is growing at an unprecedented rate. Moms just will not sit still and allow their children to be shackled with the consequences of one poor decision after another.
Not so fast there folks. He has a fundamental problem with little things like "THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES."
Coburn is a bailout voter which means he believes that the commerce clause authorizes him to "purchase assets and equity from financial institutions in order to strengthen its financial sector."
Yeah, not entirely what I thought the commerce clause was saying. His record in the Senate is NOT entirely conservative. His current standards now seem to be growing from the fact that it's the "other" party he's saying "no" to.
At the moment this man currently represents me. I appreciate the work that he's doing, but his record shows that he's a part of what's wrong in Washington. He helped let the water out and now he's trying to patch it with bubblegum. Sure, at least he's recognizing that the dike is leaking, but it shouldn't be too hard to notice when you're the one who made the hole.
The rhetoric here in the state from the GOP is "Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater." Well, that's a great saying, but it doesn't give my children back their future. We've run the math. At a 40 hour work week, minimum wage, my kids will owe 10 weeks of their life to paying off their share of the bailout. Thanks a lot Senator Coburn. 2/3 of the people who currently represent me in D.C. are bailout voters.
Sorry, I'm a veteran. If you take that out to preserve the constitution, designed to "preserve the blessings of liberty" then YOU DO IT–even when it's inconvenient.
WE MUST PUT A STOP TO obama AND ALL OF HIS BULL SH!! AND STOP ALL OF THIS WILD SPENDING THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON TO LONG obama IS AS USEFUL AS A BAD CASE OF THE SHIT'S WE MUST IMPEACH HIM NOW
Problem is, it doesn't create a requisite number of permanent jobs for the amount of money that has been thrown at it. That is the problem with all of these projects, there is no permanency.
I find it interesting that the EU is moving away from socialism just when America is moving to embrace it. Obviously it has not worked well in Europe. Does Obama really think he can do better? (German elections)
Let the light shine on the pork. Lets get the stimulus repealed and stop some future pork. If only lobbying were illegal.
Why can't they just vote on a single thing, one at a time? Time is all they have if they were doing their jobs.
That first link didn't work for me.
So, if it's happened before, it's OK? That's a big part of the problem — "no one complained when he did it, so it's OK for me to do it." Stupid spending is stupid spending. It has to stop, at some point. The sooner, the better.
BIGPORK.COM has been registered for almost three years, already. It's not owned by Breitbart.
If the intent is to display the waste and porkbarrel spending then TWO websites. One details the LIBPORK and the other details the REPUBPORK. The libs would continue to spend your hard earned money with little regard. The repubs would be scared to death to spend. Would be fun to keep score on Breitbart ! And would clearly show WHO HAS YOUR BEST INTERESTS AT HEART !
You wish Tom Coburn were your Senator? Tell you what I will do for you: He is my Senator so if I can find an ACORN office still open, I will sign up again and vote for him twice next time. Once for me and once for you. We love him because he is so non political and works so hard for the good of the nation.
republicanpork.com and democratpork.com are both registered, already.
I totally agree with the first point of this article, too many Republican politicians criticize pork spending but rush up to the government trough to pork out when it benefits them. Dems are by far the worst though.
The out of control spending needs to be addressed. The waste is staggering especially when you dig down into it and actually see some of the things being funded. The Citizens Against Government Waste web site (cagw.org) gives a pretty good breakdown on much of the pork spending going on.
Many people don't have internet access. Bills have to be available in hard copy.
Here is a crazy idea. Let museums pay their own expenses by charging admission fees. If they don't get enough visitors willing to pay an admission large enough to keep the museum solvent then the museum needs to be merged with a larger museum or closed.
Another constitutional amendment we need. A balanced budget amendment. The federal government's expenditures cannot exceed revenues except in times a DECLARED war. And then the amounts borrowed must be paid back in some reasonable time frame when the war is over.
The amendment should further state that the size of the federal budget cannot exceed some reasonable percentage of GDP. I think 10% is a nice round number.
The state I live in has a balanced budget amendment. It is funny every year watching the politicians scramble to pass a realistic budget. I hate to think what kind of shape our state would be in without the balanced budget amendment. Our politicians are so pathetic.
Vote them ALL out! No incumbants! Coburn is a good man, but they ALL have to go. We need to throw a tarp over all of DC and fumigate the whole place.
Why thank you. I started with my husband. Captive in the car one day he had to listen to Laura Ingram, then some Beck and Gads! some Rush. NOW he comes home and says, "you know I was listening to one of YOUR radio programs and they were saying."….fill in the blank.
Scary, MY radio programs???
Lesson learned, get 'em any way we can.
Since BIGPORK.COM is already registered, I'll sell <a href="http://PorkOMeter.com,” target=”_blank”>http://PorkOMeter.com, for cheap.
I highly doubt that any large museums can pay their expenses from admission fees. But hey , who cares? close all the museums , if they don't turn a profit then they are not worth anything right?

Well, you must not have tried very hard.

It's in Kansas City, MO. started in 1997. It's a cool place, and I don't think $300,000 is all that porky.
It's not hard to find. It's in Kansas City, Mo.
