How Rumors Get Started: Gov. Martinez’s Grandparents Were Not Illegal Immigrants
by Patrick HynesThere are certain “types” of people who are just not allowed to be conservative. You know what I’m talking about. For example, a certain African American Supreme Court Justice will always be the subject of bilious contempt because he holds legal and constitutional views that differ from what a black public servant is expected to hold.
We saw this dynamic play out recently in the Washington Post’s vicious and sloppy attack on Sen. Marco Rubio. Rubio is, of course, a quickly rising star in the Republican Party; one with broad – even national – appeal. Clearly the left knows the threat Sen. Rubio presents to its grip on Hispanic voters, so they felt it necessary to muddy him up with a shoddy news story questioning his family story.
Now come the attacks on New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez. The attacks on Martinez are much subtler than those on Sen. Rubio, but no less dangerous if left unanswered. They come in the form of a pervasive rumor about her family origins; a rumor that has been reported uncritically by the mainstream media, including the New York Times.
Here we have a popular and successful Latina politician with a bold, conservative agenda in an important swing state. As far as the mainstream media is concerned, there has to be a catch.
“Ms. Martinez, who grew up along the border, is also Mexican-American, with news reports since her election revealing that her paternal grandfather came to the United States as an illegal immigrant,” wrote Marc Lacey in a New York Times profile three months ago.
“…The New Mexican’s Sandra Baltazar Martínez reported recently, at least two of the governor’s grandparents also were [undocumented immigrants],” wrote the Santa Fe New Mexican in a recent editorial.
Lest you be under any illusions about the nature and motives of these news items, bear in mind that Gov. Martinez wants to roll back certain of her predecessor’s policies regarding illegal immigration in New Mexico, most notably, a policy that allows illegal immigrants to secure drivers licenses. “The governor’s opponents have pointed to her immigrant grandparents as an example of why New Mexico should welcome illegal immigrants and continue to allow them to get a driver’s license,” reports the Associated Press.
Obviously, the stage is set for the media and her political rivals to paint Gov. Martinez as a hypocrite and a traitor to her people.
There’s only one problem: The story about Martinez’s grandparents is junk. The Governor’s grandparents were not U.S. citizens, but they were most certainly not illegal immigrants.
According to Barry Massey of the Associated Press:
The 1930 U.S. census has been cited in published reports as indicating the governor’s grandparents were illegal immigrants. However, the census only records they were not U.S. citizens at the time they were living in El Paso. The census used a code, “AL” to designate they were “aliens,” meaning they were not citizens and had not filed papers declaring their intent to become citizens. It does not indicate their immigration status or whether they were living in the United States legally, according to historians and immigration experts.
Two experts quoted in Massey’s story make it clear that Martinez’s grandparents lived well within the law at the time.
“There was no such thing as an undocumented immigrant during that time” in the American Southwest, said [immigration law expert and director of the Institute of Higher Education Law & Governance at the University of Houston Michael A.] Olivas, a Santa Fe resident. “There was no secure Mexican border and people came and went with no problem.”
The census lists 1910 as the year Martinez’s grandfather, Adolfo Martinez, immigrated to the U.S. He worked as a taxi driver and spoke English. Her grandmother, Francisca Martinez, came to the U.S. in 1915, according to the same census document.
Her grandparents had U.S. government permits to cross the border on several occasions, according to documents provided to the AP by the governor’s political committee. They were dated from 1908 through 1931, and several were issued by the U.S. Department of Labor’s immigration service.
“So he understood the process and seemed to have followed the process,” the governor said of her grandfather.
Guadalupe San Miguel, Jr., a history professor at the University of Houston and a noted scholar of Mexican-American history, said it wasn’t until a 1924 federal law outlined rules for immigrants with proper documents.
“But they did not apply the law to people from the Western Hemisphere,” said San Miguel. “It only applied to people from Europe, Africa and Asia, for example.”
Gov. Susana Martinez doesn’t fit into the box in which the mainstream media and the political left would like to contain her. So naturally, they will endeavor to bring her down. But the potentially damaging narrative about Gov. Martinez’s grandparents is a bogus myth.

EVERY SINGLE conservative who leads in ANYTHING. It is so transparent…. every time a republican candidate takes the lead in ANY poll, then mistresses, sexual harassed, illegal alien maids, you name it, they all come out. They in turn are vilified. When a liberal has "transgressions", they are excused.
This is so transparent.
The Liberals are really rattled. The democrat rumor mill is working 24/7
The Left's narrative is starting to unravel at the margins. As more conservatives emerge who conflict with the left's narrative that all the conservatives are old white men they are getting more desperate and making more and more outlandish claims. The media are willing and able to pick up these slights and amplify them. Less than a year to go and we MUST take back the senate, keep the house and fumigate the White House.
The WH fumigation should be followed by every remove-the-evil ritual we can think of.
Expecting honesty from the New York Times?!?
And the carpets, gotta burn the carpets.
Stray from the liberal plantation and you'll be punished. This is true for black, Hispanics, women, and gays.
And bring back Churchill's bust!
When will minorities start to see what the true left is like….You are owned never to stray from liberal land
the truth is old joe kennedy was a bootlegger, robert byrd was a klansman, but they must smear the republicans.
This is merely the latest evidence proving that socialists would trample their own mothers' corpses if it meant extending their power over others, even slightly.
The Democrat party has managed to fool a lot of people into thinking that being a serf is a beautiful thing.
And there were no quotas for immigrants in the Western Hemisphere until 1965.
Embassies simply admitted anyone with a plan and a visible means of support (family and/or a job in the United States).
As for today, the suspicion of illegal aliens among the foreign-born is a byproduct of our lack of immigration enforcement. As Barbara Jordan told Congress in 1994, "Failure to develop more effective strategies to curb unlawful immigration has blurred distinctions between legal and illegal immigrants."
And she was right. From 2000-2004 85% of all immigrants from Mexico were illegal aliens, about 485,000 per year.

Yet they think we commonfolk are too dumb to realize it. Then, when there is a backlash, like that huge win for conservatives in Congress a couple years back, they can't fathom what happened. And then, instead of looking into it and seeing they were wrong, they continue to do the same thing over and over. It's amazing how oblivious these people are to their own insanity.
I enjoy every time the NYT makes a fool of themselves. The more folks realize that they are a joke, the better off we all will be!
We can't worry about the illegals flooding across the border every day right now, but yet we are worried about someone from 95 years ago?
Too bad they didn't cross until now, because now they would be getting free food stamps, housing and education
Patrick. You are wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. What part of Kathleen Parker's "Palinization of the GOP" DIDN'T you read?
The Smart Ones go to Jon Corzine for financial advice. The "first call" don't you see.
The Smart Ones invest a billion dollars on a business model that makes solar buggy whips for $6 only to sell them for $3 when everyone else buys them for $1.
The Smart Ones don't care about the truth. Why would they? Humpty Dumpty stubbed his toe. The USA is in a COMA.
The USA is in a COMA. The USA is in a COMA. The USA is in a COMA. And it is not coming out.
If I was the incoming President elect, it would be under my arm as I walked through the door.
Exactly. And the first guests would be British diplomats to observe the re-placement of the bust in its proper place.
Why is it so offensive to the left when a member of the "disinfranchised" wants to work, abide by the laws, pay their fair share in taxes, donate to charity, or vote Republican?
Let's get this strait: if you are black, hispanic, a female, homosexual, transgender, attend college, a union member, a teacher, an actor/actress, a musician or any member thought to "represent" the "minority" your opinions are only worthy to the political landscape as long as they are liberal. Got it!
DemoRatt Communism: The BIg Lie.
I respecfully disagree with everybody. Governor Masrtinez' grandparents should all be granted NM Drivers Licenses!
"And then, instead of looking into it and seeing they were wrong, they continue to do the same thing over and over."
A working definition of insanity.
That would be every time they publish an issue or update their website, yes?
Don't forget MSNBC's obvious promotion of the New Left's highly fashionable and bordering on psychotic anti-Semitism masquerading as anti-Zionism.
I propose Ramedan brunches.
Even MORE proof that leftists are racist. To them all Mexicans are illegals.
lol, ask John Nolte how rumors get started. Did you hear that the White House shooter was an occupy protester. Yep. Them protester are starting to look like terrorists!
So grandpa understood the process and seemed to follow it? okay.
Love it.
True story: my dad woke up the other morning and told my mom "The world ended last night." My mom opened the drapes and said "Nope." I'll have to check if he still has his driver's license.
Well, considering that the San Diego occupiers held a moment of silence for the White House shooter I'd say that at the least they adopted him.
Good article, thank you. Mrs. Martinez is good at her job, knows who she is and what she stands for. I am proud to say I voted for her.

Rumors get started by @ssholes like you. Your post I'm replying to is a perfect example.
oops. Sorry ya didn't like it, pc.
didn't you forget something? Nothing like taking it out of context. I believe the moment was for the White House and the shooter. The shooter is mentally ill. I don't suppose any of your family or friends suffer from that, eh?
I'm still waiting for the leftie retractions for the claims that Jared Loughner shot Representative Giffords because he's Mr. Right-wing,
I'm old enough to remember the National Moment of Silence that was held for Oswald after he shot Jack Kennedy. Oh, wait . . .
Yep, hanging out in the Occupy camp. Not related at all. Our mistake. /Sarcasm Off
If the shooter had ever been drinking Iced Tea, you can bet the press would be trying to tie him to The Tea Party.
Of course they're rattled. Obama's election was supposed to be the deathblow to conservatism in America. Leftists hate it when things don't go the way they plan, because it implies that they aren't intellectually superior to us plebeians.
The ones who came 95 years ago were too proud to take charity unless the need was dire. Today, the government dole is their due. very different kinds of people.
Okay lets pretend for a minute that they were illegal. What are the people who did this article suggest we do? Immediately deport anybody who has illegal relatives. That will quickly drain millions from our population and Democrat votes. I game for that.

Immediately, if not sooner…
Susana sees it…too bad the Democratic Roundhouse out here likes the plantation…
Patrón is how things get done in Northern NM…keep your head down, be polite, ask quietly, be grateful…
I hope Richardson soon swings at the end of the campaign money diversion rope, just like Edwards will…and for similar reasons…
Two of us…Susana is the best thing to happen to us in a long while…
We put Susana in the Governor's Seat because she's nothing like Richardson…
Thank You, God…
I'd re-elect her even if her family crashed in Roswell…get it…?
Oh…and just in case you Lefties send out another nut…she carries…
And to the Leftist Socialist DIMocRATS still left in the Roundhouse…you're not learning fast enough…
Say goodbye to your cushy Patrón jobs next election…we know who did what out here…
*snerk*
With bacon?
LOL!
Take a look at the 1930 census (as I do – genealogist) and you will see many people listed as AL under their status. It doesn't mean "alien" in our sense of the word, but rather a person who hasn't yet filed their first papers (declaration of intent to become a US citizen). What lefties don't understand is that most (I won't say all) of these people were accounted for, they weren't living underground, soaking up entitlements, and hiding from authorities for fear of deportation. To even apply for citizenship you had to cough up a much-validated certificate of arrival from a recognized US port. That, in addition to several other safeguard measures. For all intents and purposes, these people were employed, paying taxes or at the very least being supported by a family member who was employed and paying taxes.
It doesn't change the fact that the governor and her parents were born in the USA. Even if we were to learn her grandparents were illegal, it's too late to deport them and we can't deport her (statute of limitations? 100 years?) unless the lefties want to amend the 14th amendment to constitution, we'd be happy to oblige but they'd definitely lose their voting base. It's probably just an attempt on their side to make us look as if we now defend the 14th amendment of the constitition re: a conservative descendant of an illegal. We know it's not true but they'll do anything to make us look wrong. In any case if turned on it's head, it makes them look stupid as they're ignoring the millions of current anchor babies while raising controversy over something that happened quite often 100 years ago.
I need to stress, that "something" that happened quite often which I refer to, is not people running through our borders with the worse intent, but rather the practice of labeling someone an "AL" on the census sheet ..
My wife and I couldn't wait to vote for her too! The former NM guv, Bill Richardson, should be in jail for how he plundered this state with his partisan ways of graft and corruption. Even the Obama Administration saw this in early 2009 and sent him home to Santa Fe with his tail between is legs when he was sure he was going to be named Obama's Commerce Secretary.
Unfortunately there are many who will believe this to be true because they have no solid educational foundation to question it.
Heck, rosehips! ALL lefties are mentally ill. What has THAT have to do with the price of tea?
A recent poll says that only 47% of the population believes that the U.S. is superior to all other nations–down from 60% in 2002. The proof that we ARE superior is comparing the numbers immigrating to the U.S. as opposed to those trying to get into Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Iran, Cuba, Egypt, Russia or even Poland. Seen any boxcar loads of immigrants trying to sneak into any of those countries?
A perfect example of the difference between the Left and the Right.
The Left believes in pursuing their cause no matter the tactics; the ends justify the means every time.
Whereas the Right is interested in Truth. Once the truth of a matter is established, then, and only then, is a plan of action proposed.
I believe, in the end, truth will reign.
I wish I could share your confidence. As General Patton once noted: "A lie can run around the world before the truth can get it's boots on". Joseph Goebels may have been a ratfaced NAZI pig, but he was also a brilliant propagandist. Tell a lie loud enough, and often enough and people will eventually accept it as truth.Ten years after 32 recounts of the Florida vote, libbies still tell the lie that the election was "Stolen" by Bush.
Hate to be a spoiler but Gov Martinez herself was under the impression her grandparents may have come to the US "illegally". It wasn't until it was recently researched more thoroughly that the truth came out.
