The Fourth of July: What We Should Be Celebrating
by Of Thee I Sing 1776Once again, this weekend, Americans will gather with their families to “celebrate” the 4th of July. What are we celebrating? What stirs us on this day? How much time will be spent reflecting upon its relevance to our way of life? Is it, as it should be, a celebration of the founding of this Republic, and its independence as a nation? Will many Americans talk with one another or with their children about the impossible dream made true by a handful of remarkable men? Will many of our fellow Americans even think about the new concept of government they created for us, one based upon the adoption of a Constitution, which established the principles of self-government and the limitations on the powers granted to that government?

Unfortunately we fear that the answer to the rhetorical questions posed above, increasingly, is “no”. If somehow our national government were to set aside that day as “National Take a Day Off from Work Day” little would change. Families would gather for a mid‑summer day of hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue and good old fun. Yes, the 4th of July features flags and parades but they often seem divorced from what it is we are all celebrating. They provide a sort of faux patriotic pageantry with an abundance of food, sparkle and noise.
Actually the 4th of July, by its correct name, is Independence Day. It signifies the true meaning of what was declared on July 2, 1776 and affirmed by the Continental Congress on July 4: the document known as the Declaration of Independence. This simple document lays out the fundamental meaning of America and it touched off a bloody revolution and several years of war to establish that all our citizens have the right to an independent life, to the liberty that allows for the freedom to exercise one’s own judgment and to the right to pursue one’s own path, career, associates, friends, etc., e.g. the pursuit of happiness.
John Adams, in a letter to his wife Abigail, correctly predicted that the day (he referred to the actions of July 2 not July 4) would be celebrated for as long as the American experiment in government continued.
“The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryump in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.”
How Adams’ fervor has been eroded by time. What Adams did not and could not know is how, and what, future generations would learn about the meaning of Independence Day. Adams, we suspect, would be heartbroken given the woeful performance by grade school and high school students on standardized American history tests, and the current minimization of demonstrations of patriotism by elitist intellectuals and their near embarrassment to exalt American Exceptionalism.
What, in fact, we are celebrating is not just the meaning of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness embodied in the Declaration. Equally as important is the form of government that was established and then enshrined in the Constitution adopted in 1787 as the foundation and source of legal authority for the United States. What was provided to us by the Founders is captured by an exchange (perhaps apocryphal) between a bystander and Benjamin Franklin. At the end of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia a woman awaiting some announcement of the results that had been produced asked Franklin: “What have we got, a republic or a monarchy” to which he responded, “a republic, if you can keep it.”
It is important to note that he did not answer “a democracy or a democratic form of government.” The distinction between the two is important and worth considering, particularly this year. In a “democracy,” majority rules with no protections against absolute and unlimited power. It was “tyranny by majority” that the framers feared could run roughshod over the inalienable rights of the individual envisioned in the Declaration. Jefferson, in particular, feared the excesses to which a mere majority could go. He said, “an elective despotism was not the government we fought for.”
A Republic, on the other hand, embodies a different form of representative government. Of course it is the people in democratic elections that choose their representatives (although initially, prior to the Sixteenth Amendment, the members of the Senate were chosen by the legislatures of the several states). In a Republic, the rights and liberties of the individual are protected by a written Constitution and in our Republic there is a division of power between the three branches of government. The overarching theme of our Constitution is limited government possessing only “just powers.” James Madison, who is rightfully considered the father of our Constitution, feared the concentration of too much power in a national government and did not sign it. He thought it granted too much power to the federal government, but nevertheless saw enough good qualities in human nature to justify some confidence, and he summed up his position in Federalist 55 by stating, “Republican government presupposes these [good] qualities in a higher degree than any other form.”
A Republic attempts to safeguard the rights of the individual and the minority from the actions of a runaway majority, whereas in a pure democracy free elections at regularly scheduled periods render majority rule sacrosanct. Both systems obviously incorporate a popular form of government but in a pure Democracy there are no safeguards against abuse of ordered liberty by whatever majority is in power.
This year in particular we can see what a large enough majority can do. We need not repeat here all of the mandates and impositions included in health care reform, but we must, at least, mention the requirement in the law that every American must purchase health insurance or be subject to a penalty. This new federal requirement is predicated upon the Constitutional provision that gives to Congress the power to regulate interstate commerce. The political left, always seeking to impose more and more government control over our lives, is once again attempting to stretch the meaning of interstate commerce beyond what the framers could possibly have imagined and clearly beyond what they had intended. The Constitution grants only certain limited powers to the Congress and then reinforces that limitation in the one-sentence-long Tenth Amendment (the last amendment in the Bill of Rights), which states “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
As we have seen, this is a far cry from the views of today’s Congress. Virtually everything in our daily lives seems to be subject to the interference of, or regulation by, the federal government. George Will, in his column published in theWashington Post on June 27 which discusses the forthcoming confirmation hearings for Elena Kagan, the president’s Supreme Court nominee, proposes that the Senate panel ask Ms. Kagan a series of questions designed to elicit her view of whether there are any limits on Congressional powers in our Republic. He proposes, among others that the Senate panel ask the following questions:
- If Congress decides that interstate commerce is substantially affected by the costs of obesity, may Congress require obese people to purchase participation in programs such as Weight Watchers? If not, why not?
- The government having decided that Chrysler’s survival is an urgent national necessity, could it decide that “Cash for Clunkers” is too indirect a subsidy and instead mandate that people buy Chrysler products?
- If Congress concludes that ignorance has a substantial impact on interstate commerce, can it constitutionally require students to do three hours of homework nightly? If not, why not?
- Can you name [any] human endeavor that Congress cannot regulate on the pretense that the endeavor affects interstate commerce?
These questions and the concept of American Exceptionalism, as first described by Alexis de Tocqueville in 1831, are the kinds of things Americans should be pondering in addition to watching fireworks and enjoying the company of friends and family this July 4th. This is a Republic we have been given, “if” as Franklin is reported to have said, “we can keep it.” Keeping it means knowing what it is to be fortunate enough to live in a republic such as that bequeathed to us by the founders, and how important that is to maintaining both our freedom from the oppressive government our founders feared and the liberty necessary to pursue our individual dreams.

We should be celebrating the fact that there are still honorable men and women who VOLUNTEER to enlist in our military, to fight for our freedom…and to keep the enemy from our shore…although that is getting harder and harder for them to do, because of the inept and criminal administration we are now saddled with! Say thank you to a soldier when you see him/her….and everyone have a Happy and Safe 4th!!!
We should be celebrating "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness", while we still can. So much has changed in the past eighteen months; it is all part of the plan- keep everyone off balance, and off center. We all need to celebrate, and truly reflect on what the Fourth of July truly means, before it is turned into the "July Mid-Summer Holiday".

Our great Republic is under assault, from within, by spoiled, mouthy, ‘60s radicals, and as was promised, have taken over the reins of power – - Academia, MSM, Government. 11/2/10 will be telling indeed, and will answer Ben’s admonition, “a republic, if you can keep it!” I believe that we will, and as in ’80, and ’94 will soundly reject the statist. For me, the big question is, can “We the People” remain vigilant long enough, to relegate ‘60s radicalism to the dust heap of failed ideas, where it belongs?
This will be a pivot point weekend for Americans. Americans will be gathering with family and friends and there will be many serious discussions. Quite often in deference to the ever foolish PC policies of the workplace, serious discussion do not take place. At home, time is always in short supply. This weekend over the BBQ's, picnics and amongst the friends and families, discussions of our Nation and our responsibilities to our Nation will be a major topic. Politics will be front and center. Obama and the failures will be brought forth. Thinking Americans, who all too often are too busy in the pursuit of life will be realizing some basic truths. One of the critical truths is simply put, that we ALL MUST ENGAGE to TAKE AMERICA BACK to be able to enjoy the GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH.
the reason why we have judges wielding opinion instead of following the rule of law is precisely due to Americans collectively not connecting the true meaning behind the 4th. The same thing with Christmas, or should I say "the holiday season"? We have allowed the left to dilute the true meaning behind many events.
May God bless our Founders, those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for our Nation, those that have/are serving our Nation and the rest of us, so that we may stand up and fight for our Republic.

My one wish for this July 4, Independence Day celebration is that our children across the nation learn the true essence of what this day represents, and understand what our founders went through towards making it possible that Americans of all creeds, race, religion, and background may have liberty, freedom and the ability to pursue happiness. This special day cannot be foresaken by the whims of a unjust few, but let it be a lasting reminder that we have inalienable rights granted us by a higher power. Well said. I think your post states all the reasons why I home school. I love to teach my children how to read and how our Founders won independence from the biggest power on Earth at that time WITH THE HELP OF GOD. It is up to their generation to carry on what I and their father have taught them.
Sad to say, our children will never get taught those things in public school. Hopefully, parents can to extra studies and teach true History to their children.

Every time I see a man or woman in uniform, I hasten to step up to them, wish them well, and thank them from the bottom of my heart for their service. I live quite close to Calverton National Cemetary…it is my father's resting place so I see our people often. They all stand so straight and proud, so young and shinning. I find I must keep myself controlled for I would want to apologize for the shameful excuse for a President they are forced to serve. Seeing them also serves as a reminder of why it is I am active in the TP…while they risk their lives to keep us safe, it is We, The People who must fight here so that the country they return to is still a nation of freedom and liberty.
I will do again this 4th what I did last year…I will set aside some time to read the Preamble to the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. And pray for our soldiers.

I'd never really thought about it before, so tried a silly little non-scientific experiment. I thought 'Independence Day', and the first thing that popped into my mind was the Declaration of Independence, and when I thought '4th of July', it was fireworks. I guess it's a little like calling Christmas, 'Winter Holliday'. I just wonder if the re-labeling was intentional (now some will say I need an aluminum-foil hat), or just intellectual laziness?

Sadly, thnaks to years of deflating our country and its founders, many people believe what I read on my niece's Facebook page today. A friend of hers wondered why we are celebrating the fact that "white slave owning aristocrats didn't want to pay their taxes." This is what passes for intellect on the sick Left. I have felt a sickness in the pit of my stomach since I read that comment, since she "liked" it.

The date is the 4th of July.
The holiday is Independence Day.
Because the holiday is always celebrated on the specific date, rather than getting pushed off to the first or third Monday or what not like many other holidays, the two merge to the point of being absolutely synonymous, such that Independence is the name of the date as "4th" is the number of the month. The same applies to things like D-Day and Pearl Harbor Day, though they are not holidays. They are the names for the dates "June 6th" and "December 7th".
There is no distinction for me between the two terms, they refer to precisely the same thing, with precisely the same moral and emotional value.
At "worst", referring to the specific date serves to distinguish it on an international level, as obviously not every nation achieved its independence on the same date.
Yes, there is a contrast with this and something like "Winter Holiday", which has both a linguistic propaganda component (the political correct denial of the Christian element), and a functional semantic element to cover the span of time (as Christmas is a date specific religious holiday during the overall "Winter Holiday", with New Year's Day being a date specific secular holiday during that same period). Similarly "Spring Break" will encompass one and possibly two specific religious holidays within its extended time frame.
At least to me.

I'm editing this post because BronxZionist pointed out something that I had overlooked. That is 'you are even dumber than I had thought'. 20 years, not 16. But I forgive you, 'Sock Puppet Theater' often has it's facts wrong. Try watching Beck once in a while, you might learn something true and relevant.

My issue is with the potential (and real effect) of "dumbing down" the significance of the event vs. referring to the date. I am young enough that I forget "6/6" as D-Day. 12/7 never escapes me for some reason, but still… I don't trust the current cultural "transmitters" of knowledge to know or care. History is paramount. Philosophy is paramount. (Related!!!). NO dumbing-down! NEVER! Without proper context, other "cultures" will simply hi-jack the dates and change their meaning… It has happened before…

The poster brings up an interesting point, about the distinction between a republic and a full democracy, the same point which Glenn Beck emphasized a little while back. Its an interesting part of the culture war's which I had never thought of before.

Full fledged democracies, when they have existed have been a partial disaster, you take ancient Greece for example, at times they were absolutely nuts, not really the shining example of classical virtues that progressives like to think of! Now we have allot of debt to the Greeks in terms of our civilization, but we must also remember they gave us some very bad things as well. I think you can make the point that Plato's republic set's the stage for the modern Totalitarians. But I digress…
The thing about Democracies is that you have the common man, easily swayed by style and talking points and sloganeering (hope and change anyone?) and they are able to control the nation through force of numbers, when the only people who have the ability to rationally govern the nation are the educated elites. Now, we conservatives love to criticize the elites, and the political class in general, but we gotta remember that we need people like that, and you do get good ones occasionally. The founders after all, humble origins aside, were eccentric intellectuals. And after all, the unintellectual common man is capable of equal if not greater evil in the right circumstances. The thing about the American Revolution is that both the intellectuals and the common man shared a higher goal, and to an extent, the 2 became blurred, the common man becoming something much higher than the peasants of yesteryear and the elites being men of the people themselves, rather than nobility or aristocracy.
The point is, that really, though the intellectuals run our government and indeed have F****d it up mightily, we live or die by the common people, and when I look at what we Americans are becoming culturally, I don't see the prosperous, tough, and intelligent people who created this nation, I see people who are steadily becoming more secular, more welfare dependent, more evil in plain words, and in the meantime, the Elites have ,in general, become egotistical and selfish monsters without remorse. I see abunch of Baby boomers demanding welfare raising generations of culturally inept and morally repulsive children. And the sorry thing about this is that many people, even among the Republicans and the Conservatives and the Libertarians, who eagerly attack modern Liberalism, are fervent in their personal demands for aid and welfare, and they are bitter hypocrite's, little better than the Liberal idiots they attack. And many common man Republicans, angry over the actions of the political elite, throw their support, not behind career or experienced politicians who are more suited for high political office, but behind people who they view as similar to themselves. Many of you people probably look for people who are "like you" as if that's a good thing in a political candidate. This is the distinction between Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich for example. Sure, the elite have screwed us, but there are people among them who could lead this country to greatness as President , and such a person requires an ideological fortitude, charisma, ruthlessness and pragmatism far above the common American.
I believe that America can be great again, but that ultimately our downfall is inevitable, and when I think about independence day, I realize that I Love my country, no longer for what it is, but for what it was and we have no one but ourselves to blame.
The solution then is to reintroduce and reinforce the proper cultural paradigm.
Of course that requires nationalism, and our current batch of Marxists are internationalists.
I always remember that about the ancient Greek government. Too many people are enamored of the names "democracy" and "republic" applied to them, and regularly refuse to acknowledge they were far from anything we would consider even vaguely acceptable.
Far from it being a digression, more people should make that point.
Looks like they've done a pretty good job so far, unfortunately. I wonder when the first part of number 38 will be tried.

SEIU and other groups are standing by, I'm sure. All of these communist spies that have been arrested recently reminded me of a novel by John Sandford that I read a few years ago called 'Hidden Prey'. It was a mediocre read at best but it nailed the idea of a sleeper Soviet cell.

There were arrests in connection with that.
And a conviction.
I was not defending the actions of Warren Jeffs, nor would I claim to have a scintilla of understanding why people choose to live in such a manner. I was simply supplying Alpha with an example of how "#38, pt.1" was not so far from the American experience these days. A "social services" agency most certainly possessed the means to conduct a police style investigation of private citizens and was able to effect those arrests, even if it lacked the power to do so directly.

If they actually investigate people, they will eventually make a mistake, and be condemned for harassing innocent people.
If they do not investigate people, some kid somewhere will be savagely abused and probably killed, and everyone will be screaming for their heads, and demanding even more intervention and harassment of innocent people.
It is a complete no-win situation.
