Porker of The Month: Sen. Richard Shelby (R.-Ala.), Who Made Pigs Fly in Outer Space!
by Nick GillespieReason.tv presents Citizens Against Government Waste’s Porker of the Month for June 2010. CAGW makes this award to a politician or special interest who takes pork-barrel spending to new heights.
This month’s winner is Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.)!
The Constellation Program was intended to modernize NASA and replace the aging Space Shuttle, but has been plagued by cost overruns and blown deadlines. President Obama and NASA have proposed canceling the unsustainable program—turning instead to the emerging private space industry to oversee launches.
In response, Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) co-sponsored a measure protecting Constellation, which was attached to an emergency war funding bill. Such a measure ensures millions of taxpayer dollars will continue being funneled to politically connected NASA contractors.
Contractors like Alabama’s own Radiance Technologies, which—wouldn’t you know it—just happens to be one of Shelby’s biggest campaign contributors.
Congratulations Sen. Shelby, you are the Porker of the Month for June 2010!

disgraceful. tea party, take note!
It's time for Dick Mustang to go………….
Pigs at the public trough, small government is the solution. Privatize what is necessary and cut the remaining 75%.
I regret hearing that.
I had respect for Senator Shelby.
We tried to get rid of him but no such luck! Not this time, maybe the next time…Same with Jo bonner and I am a Tea Party member. Too many porkers with gratefuls on their side.
No surprise, this guy used to be a member of the Democrat Party, and switched when the dims were in trouble. No more career politicians. Time for him to go.
You are right there.
Too many suckling hogs, not enough teats.
NOW JUST WAIT A MINUTE. Here's a program that has enjoyed broad public, and which the government is uniquely suited to handling. If you have any doubt that this is a program that Conservatives can easily get behind, please consider that OBAMA WANTS TO KILL IT. That's right, there is a way for Obama to spend money, and he doesn't want to.
If Obama DOESN'T want to spend money on something, my first response is to ask "okay, in what way does killing this program help Obama in his mission, which is to kill this country as we know and love it?" The long answer is waaaay too long; the short answer is this: Obama knows that this program will expand our leadership in space exploration, and he wants to cede our leadership in all areas to the rest of the world.
Am I saying this because my home state has very important NASA facilities and will benefit from Constellation? NO. But I would certainly use that fact to get the attention of our Senators and Representatives.
Good move, that way NASA can concentrate on keeping the global warming lies alive. It's been quite a ride for our once proud science agnecey, now morphed into hiding the truth. Ask NASA why they hide the Stefan-Boltzmann measurements from the moon mission. If they hadn't, the entire global warming greenhouse effect would collapse on one equation.
A good Government program?
You mean like the super-collossal Super Collider that the Government spent billions on in Waxahachie, Texas.? Remember? The atom-smasher that never worked? The Government wasted billions, and a group of private investors bought it out from them, for about ten million dollars.
Obama: cut Constellation to pay for education
November 20, 2007 at 2:06 pm
http://www.spacepolitics.com/2007/11/20/obama-cut...
The point of the above article is that while campaigning, Obama was proposing to INCREASE education expenditures (i.e., pay raises for teachers unions) at the cost of "delaying" Constellation for five years. The man spends money like water, he utterly does not care one whit about cutting costs as a way of restoring fiscal sanity. If he proposes a cut, it's not even really so he can increase spending in another area — that's just campaign talk. He wants to cut programs that make America stronger.
One more thing. This comment was posted on the blog I cited above:
To all those in favor [of Obama's plan to eliminate Constellation]:
You do realize this will eliminate American crewed spaceflight right? Justifying that thought
with “SpaceX will takeover” is foolish. Crewed Dragon isn’t going to fly for a long time. A 10 year
gap will be a disaster.
That posting is accurate. Obama is not merely reducing funding on some overblown pork-barrel NASA project, he is ELIMINATING Americans from spaceflight. Unless, I suppose, we hitch a ride with the Russians or Chinese.
BRAVO, Senator Shelby. There are a lot of Americans who don't want for us to piss away our space program and hand it over to the Russians and Chinese.
Well… heck… how much is this project… cause Bambi is starting a 500 million Dads program… gave 400 million to Hamas…
I bet I could easily come up with the rest of the money in REALLY easy cuts.
Shelby was a democrat for years,he only changed to survive in Alabama ,unfortunately he defeated Senator Denton ,a war hero, using nativism(anti catholicism) to win . He is a true dixiecrat.
No, I mean like Apollo and the Space Shuttle. You know, the program that put mankind on the moon forty-one years ago, and the program that has kept us in space ever since. Programs that advanced technology in innumerable ways, and helped cement our standing as the greatest nation that God has given earth. THOSE programs are the ones I refer to as "good government programs."
But hey, if you're content to let the Russians and Chinese dominate space, if you want to see red flags on the red planet instead of a red, white and blue one, JUST KEEP ON SUPPORTING OBAMA ON THIS ONE.
NICK, you say "Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) co-sponsored a measure protecting Constellation," Just who are the other sponsors of the measure? I want to be certain to THANK them.
In a statement yesterday, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) endorsed a letter by John Glenn calling for a shuttle extension. “I strongly agree with Senator Glenn, and the concerns expressed by many others, that the simultaneous cancellation of the Constellation program and the retirement of the space shuttle threatens our access to and use of the space station,” Hutchison said. “The decision to retire the shuttle fleet was made based on a plan to have commercial cargo resupply capabilities available soon after the final shuttle flight, and an expected station service date of 2015. The simple fact is that since the shuttle retirement decision was made, the service life of the space station has been extended until 2020 and new commercial cargo capabilities have experienced significant delays.” She added that while she has proposed some scenarios for extending the shuttle program by stretching out the remaining flights (more difficult now with only two missions remaining on the manifest), “the Administration has given no indication that it understands how the President’s proposal changes assumptions and plans regarding the space station, or that it is willing to discuss options to extend the availability of the space shuttle.”
http://www.spacepolitics.com/2010/06/23/hutchison...
Short version: without Constellation, we'll have to prop up the Space Shuttles, or be totally kicked out of space. You know, the Space Shuttles, two of which blew up, and all of which were designed in the 1970s and began service in 1981. But even that option is currently NOT on the table.
Yes, let's keep funding unnecessary projects when we're already trillions in debt. That will help keep America on top. /sarcasm
NASA, to a certain degree, has most certainly been compromised by political correctness,…
such as with their BS global warming data,…………..and yes,…………..
cost overruns have been the only giant leaps for mankind they have made lately,..however,……….
it is imperative that the United States of America remain at the forefront,………….
of space exploration and innovation.
NASA,…….Let's clean it up with the,……… "Right Stuff",……but
we gotta keep it.
If Ted Kennedy crawled out of hell and drunkenly stumbled into the Senate to vote for restoring Constellation, I would thank him for it (although I'd have to suppress the gag reflex triggered by the vomit in my mouth). The issue is not whether Shelby is a good guy or a bad guy, the issue is whether or not this is a program that Obama should be allowed to kill.
the Senator may have some political reasons, but Constellation sounds like a logical step for the space program, as far as it being over budget well that isn't something Obama understands anyway but should be corrected not destroyed.
He has done more than just cut this from NASA, so let's not act like he is making a reasonable decision. It is strange when Obama does something seemingly responsible.
What are Obama's TRUE motivations?
Shelby is also saving jobs in his state by trying to keep businesses related to NASA and spaceflight, well, in business!
A good point but Obama cutting this before all his other anti-american programs and still handing cash over to our enemies.
NASA is more American than Hamas.
What really gets me is … how can anyone attach ANYTHING to an emergency WAR SPENDING BILL ????? Who in there right mind could sleep at night …. Young men and women are dying for this FAT AZZ to do this kind of CRAP !!!!
These people have no shame .. zero … none ……
Shelby is a freakin blowhard. But I concur with you.
On second thought, off with their testicles ! King George the 111 would approve, and so would Barry. The time for observing is coming to a close and soon smoke will fill the air. It is inevitable, let it be sooner than later.
You do not do it on the BACKS OF AMERICAN SOLIDERS, PERIOD !!!!! You want this to PASS THEN let it stand on it'ws own!!!
I to want it to continue but would NEVER sneak it in under a WAR BILL…. That is just wrong.
CL….. UC…. Your both right. I hate to see something as great as NASA be infected with the same government bureaucracy that is dragging the nation down. NASA is one of the few agencies that i don't have a problem with my tax dollars going as long as its not driven by politics, but by the passion for space exploration. With the right leadership its one government program i would save.
Think about the Hubble. That puppy can see back in time! And only this country could build something big enough to get it into orbit. (and make it work). Screw the POTUS campaign fund donation on the tax form, put one in there for NASA, I'd check it.
It shouldn't matter if they have an R or a D in front of their name ( although having one of each depending on the direction of the wind should matter ), if they are wasting our money, we should show them the door.
Just to reference that SSC, I grew up in Ellis county. Who was the bone head that put that thing on a fault line???
Great example of Gubnint Stupidity.
We really should have a "single issue" rule, but every spending bill has dozens (at least) of totally unrelated crap piled on top. That, however, is not the issue here. Plus, I just don't see how this is "on the backs" of American soldiers just because it's part of a "emergency war supplemental." Does anyone honestly think this is somehow going to impede the progress of funding our wars and put troops in danger?
Yes, we should have stand-alone, single issue spending bills for any spending not in a general budget bill. But we don't. This issue is a red herring.
Agreed. NASA has its share of problems — including bloated budgets for stupid projects — and has been infected by the leftists and environmental whackos. We need to change it, but this does not mean that we need to kill it. The private sector is doing some really exciting things, but for many decades to come, space exploration will remain an enterprise that is commercially non-viable.
I reiterate: if Obama thinks it should be killed, we should probably do everything in our power to stop him.
Your argument is impassioned, but illogical. No one is dying because this Senator is trying to keep the American space program alive. His actions do not impact our troops one bit.
Agreed, to a certain point. If I were to vote against incumbent Senator R, because he spends too much, in favor of whacko liberal communist community organizer candidate D, would I not then be stupid?
The time to vote FOR someone is in the primaries; after that, you're pretty much stuck voting AGAINST the liberal baby-killing commies, if you have a soul.
he did bring this upon himself,……..
totally agree with the concept,.if Obama is for something,………..
more than likely,….we should oppose it.
We spent millions to get to the moon and we got some 200+ pounds of rocks to show for it and a whole bunch of cool technology. Let the Russians go back to the moon for a while, just keep up the R&D without breaking the bank.
We act like we have to beat someone all the time to stay ahead, but we are all going to die on this planet if we don't get along better. We can't get off the earth with what money we'll have to borrow from the Chinese.
Are we under the threat of meteors or something. What's the F-ing rush to get back to the moon and go to Mars? Is it simply because we've screwed this planet up so bad it can't be fixed and we need to find another?
Before I leave for the day, let me just toss out this thought: Being a Conservative doesn't mean that we must adopt the attitude that all spending for things other than roads and the military is bad. It also doesn't mean that we must adopt the attitude that any spending we disagree with — and that happens to also benefit a particular constituency — is evil "pork barrel" spending.
We need to choose our battles wisely. We must apply reasoning, and insist on a logical analysis of an issue, while applying appropriate conservative principles Reasonable minds can agree or disagree on whether the spending at issue is a pork barrel boondoggle or something that is vital to the continued greatness of our nation.
And so, when debating these issues as conservatives, let's not forget that in our zeal to impose fiscal conservatism on an out of control government, we do not need to attack our friends. Disagreements among friends should NOT start with name calling, like "Porker of the Month." Just because the Senator is a Republican does not make him a conservative, but really, shouldn't this fact at least entitle him to a little more deference? Shouldn't we at least examine the case against him as a non-conservative before launching into an assault as self-indulgent porker?
Just a thought. Adios!
I love NASA. In the past, the technology that was developed in conjunction with a government agency actually accomplishing something is astounding.
Think about it….it cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 billion to fight WWII and approximately $100 billion to send man to the moon. How much have we spent on the "War on Poverty" with ZERO success? I believe it is now in the trillions.
Unfortunately for all of We the Taxpayers, the few who are left, are witnessing a total corrupt machine in action. No single person can stand-up and say, "NO, I will not support this decaying program". Money would most likely be better spent developing a more focused project for the future, not continue with the spare parts of the past.
I'm confused. How is relying on the politically connected Virgin Galactic, who donated $800k to democrats last year, somehow better? Because they have a Gecko?
I can't figure out how NASA buying stuff from Virgin is different than buying stuff from Radiance. I'm going to be just as opposed to earmarks for Virgin.
Thanks ultra …. So he doesn't THINK that no one would vote AGANIST a spending war bill??? Get real…. He added for that reason and that reason alone !!!
Off topic: here's more of our money that went into the crapper:
" Nearly 1,300 prison inmates wrongly received more than $9 million in tax credits for homebuyers despite being locked up when they claimed they bought a home, a government investigator reported Wednesday.
The investigator said 241 of the inmates were serving life sentences.
In all, more than 14,100 taxpayers wrongly received at least $26.7 million in tax credits that were meant to boost the nation's slumping housing markets, said the report by J. Russell George, the Treasury Department's inspector general for tax administration. "
This government at it's imbecile, insane best.. Morons. How many more will they hire to keep the first wave straight? Ooops, there go the "saving and hiring" polls…way up for the month.
I hate to admit it, but Shelby is MY senator. He has been in the top 10 Earmarking Senators for years. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have many complaints, other than he supports MORE yearly Foriegn Worker Visa's.
He was a Democrat until he switched parties in 1996. "Nuff said.
We all know pork means slush funds. Ask yourself why your world keeps sinking while our politicians keep rising.
Gentle Readers,____Mr. Gillespie is wrong for 3 reasons:____#1: NASA's budget under Pres. Obama is projected to INCREASE from $16 billion – $19 billion/yr and he has CANCELLED THE MANNED SPACE PROGRAM! ____We're not saving any money: NASA is simply abandoning its core mission.____The Plan: When Pres. Kennedy outlined the Goals for the manned space program in 1961, the ' Moon-Shot ' got the HeadLines, but the plan was____#1: Put a man into Space,__#2: Orbit a man__#3: Put 2 men into space & spacewalk__#4: Dock 2 spacecraft__#5 Orbit the Moon__#6: Land on the Moon, return safely__#7: Space Station Module ( SkyLab )__#8: Space Shuttle__#9: Modular Space Station ( ISS )__#10: Permanent Space Station on the Moon__#11: From the Moon, on to Mars__#12: Build atomic propulsion: On to Jupiter____To fully fund this requires $5 billion/yr in current dollars. Thats less than 1/3 of NASAs__current budget.____The Manned Space Program has only been fully funded under Pres. Kennedy and 3 years__under Pres. GW Bush.____
Had the program been fully funded since inception, all goals would have been achieved
by 1985.
#2: The Objective of this program was to demonstrate in a highly visible way that the United States has the
Technical Capability and the National Will to Dominate Space with a PEACEFUL PROGRAM of Scientific
Exploration and Commercial Develop. So doing would preclude any nation or group of nations hostile to
the United States from attempting to militarize space.
This objective has been achieved up to this point even though the manned space program ( not NASA, the
Space Program ) has not been fully funded.
#3: The new technology derived from the Manned Space program more than pays the cost of that program.
Just fiber-optic technology alone is worth $1 trillion. If you want to save energy, invest in the Space Program.
Fiber-optics carry 10,000 times the data using 1/1000 of the energy.
Furthermore, demonstrating American technical competence attacts investment, builds confidence
and enhances exports. IT IS GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY AND ONE OF THE BEST ECONOMIC
INVESTMENTS THE GOVERNMENT CAN MAKE!
Conclusion: It is in the best interest of the United States to fully fund the manned space program.
Mr. Gillespie is part of a foolish Libertarian-Progressive political axis which seeks to diminish American
power in the world and the American Middle Class for political reasons. Honestly, you talk to Libertarians
and they complain that Jefferson bought Louisiana! ( He borrowed 3X the US GDP without any Congressional
authorization! ) ( Yeah stupid! Aren't you glad he did! )
Kindest Regards to all,
I am,

Gentle Readers,
Last post: If you dislike government spending, imagine what the cost of an arms race in space would be!
Fully funding the manned space program precludes that possibilty by achieving the objective outlined by Pres. Kennedy in 1961.
Given the required lead-time and cost for developing the technology should the U.S. find itself threatened by a
foreign power in Space, the best way to ensure the lowest possible budget is to fully fund the program.
Also, consider what technology we might have today had we fully funded the program and landed on the Jovian moons in 1985. People might scoff at the ideal of a petroleum economy with those ' quaint, old-fashioned ' internal combustion engines !. DEEPWATER HORIZON might never have happened!
Sincerely,
J Lepant

[...] » Porker of The Month: Sen. Richard Shelby (R.-Ala.), Who Made … [...]
Genius title! He really made the pork fly! LOL
Exactly, why do we let authors like Nick Gillespie complain about human spaceflight?
You can argue against human spaceflight, but the argument about its expense misses the point. Space exploration and colonization is the best possible use of money.
That's like a parent arguing they are "wasting" too much money on child support. What could money be for, if not to lift humanity off the Earth? What will educating kids on earth teach them, that life in space can't?
Exactly, this author seems to be anti-space travel. This has little to do with actual expenditures. One day of entitlements to aliens and wealthy bums would pay for a decent space program.
One of the innumerable examples of space technology in common use today is the rechargeable batteries in power tools. NASA contracted with Black and Decker for a small but powerful lightweight battery powered drill. A key technological advance made the battery-powered drill possible — a computer program was used to design the drill's motor to use as little power as possible. That computer program, along with the knowledge and experience gained in developing the drill, provided a strong technology base for developing battery powered tools and appliances.
Walk into any Lowes or Home Depot and look at the multitude of battery powered tools of all types that have resulted — it is simply amazing; I have several myself. I cannot prove it, but I'm willing to bet that this development alone has caused enough economic growth to pay for the entire Apollo program.
I promise, this is my last comment:
Without the space program, Ronald Reagan could not have won the Cold War.
The entire world watched in awe as Americans stepped foot on the moon and planted the Stars and Stripes in lunar soil. Little more than a decade later, Reagan proposed SDI, which Dems derided as the "Star Wars" program, but which scared the crap out of the Soviets. They didn't just think we could do it, we'd PROVED to them we could do it.
Our leadership in space has made the world a freer place. Constellation is vital to maintaining and expanding our leadership in space.
Dear Ultra C,
Thank you for the favor of your reply.
An excellent example!
Sincerely,
J Lepant
Dear Elite,
Trouble is, under Pres. Obama NASAs budget will increase from $16 billion to $19 billion/yr and the manned space program is cancelled.
The manned space program was funded at $3 billion/yr. If fully funded, which has only happened under Pres. Kennedy and 3 years under Pres. GW Bush, it would cost $5 billion. That's out of a NASA budget of $16 billion, less than 1/3 if fully funded and less than 20% as funded currently, project to go down to 0% next year.
Pres. Obama is increasing funding for NASA while abandoning it's core mission. It's like having a Navy with no ships or an Air Force with no planes, or a President with no Integrity ( oops, we got that! ).
Sincerely,
J Lepant Brighton CO
Dear Ultra C,
Make no promises, my friend, you're making sense with your posts!
Keep 'em coming, as far as I am concerned
Sincerely,
John Lepant Brighton CO
Gentle Readers,
Previously stated no additional posts, but feel compelled:
The Obama Administration decision to abandon the manned space program was supposedly based on the Augustine Report. However, that report made no such recommendation.
What it did was review the options for a manned space program, considering,
#1: Keep the Shuttles flying,
#2: Put the Constellation manned module onto a Shuttle Booster using Shuttle engines,
#3: An Alternative New Rocket,
#4: Using existing rockets such as the DELTA IV, or
#5: An atomic rocket
What the report stated was that whatever decision would be made the manned space program would require between $2.5 – $5 billion/year to achieve it's stated objective. ( see my previous post ) Without adequate funding the objective would not be met and should be abandoned.
