ObamaCare and Mission Creep Redux: Sen. Tom Harkin Says Health Care Bill Is ‘A Starter Home’
by Nick GillespieJeebus H. Christ, it didn’t take long for the scope of ObamaCare to swell up like the ankles of a carnival fat lady after a day at work! ObamaCare isn’t even law yet, but Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) explains it all for us plainer than Sr. Mary Ignatius ever dared.

Despite the crappy housing market, the health care reform bill currently being debated in the Senate is only a “starter home,” you see. We’ve got to leverage the country into an unaffordable McMansion ASAP. Talking to the lefty Iowa Independent, the Daniel Ortega- and bee pollen-loving senator, gives a disturbing metaphor about the real goals of this historic (hysteric?) legislation:
“What we are buying here is a modest home, not a mansion. What we are getting here is a starter home. It’s got a good foundation: 30 million Americans are covered. It’s got a good roof: A lot of protections from abuses by insurance companies. It’s got a lot of nice stuff in there for prevention and wellness. But, we can build additions as we go along in the future. It is a starter home. Think about it in that way.”
Suffice it to say that this is exactly (and presciently!) why we titled our latest Reason.tv video “ObamaCare and Mission Creep: Why health care reform will end up covering much more than you think.” (Go to Reason.tv for downloadable versions.)
Forget snowballs—throw that at your nearest representative.

"…protections from abuses by insurance companies…"
The Constitution is supposed to be our protection from abuses by the federal government. I'll start with that statist.
Now spin on it.
Let me remember to dot all of my i's and cross all my t's on my response………..
Tom Harkin is a IDIOT!
And if you aren't sure what mission creep is, don't worry Barney Frank knows:

Yes, Mr. Harkin….. It IS a starter home but not for the reasons you suggest. It is the START of your demise in Congress along with the rest of the bastards that lied, cheated and stole from the American people over this debacle. Enjoy the ride over the next several months. We certainly will !
no sen. POS HArkin..Obama care is more like govt. housing, rat infested crime infested drug infested sub standard, you lib moron dunce, if obamacare is so good how come none of you POS want it, LIB SCUM!

This bill needs to be thrown out. They are just stealing your money for themselves.
A starter home, indeed. But, Constitutional?
Amendment X (Bill of Rights)
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
The constitution (See section
does not allow for the creation of a mandatory poll tax or mandatory expense to fund the redistribution of income for healthcare. Amendment ten reinforces this by investing those powers not granted to the federal government in the states. The failures in Massachusetts and Maine, for example, are primers on how not to do it on any level. Not only is the current legislation unconstitutional, it is plagiarism not of the great works, but of dime store fiction.
But, do not let the facts get in the way of anyone’s argument.

you do realize that within this piece of crap is language that effectively CHANGES THE RULES OF THE SENATE, to the point where it would be ruled out of order to attempt to repeal most portions of the bill. this is a mouse trap that the Left has been working on for many, many years. sure, there are many parts of the bill that were hastily assembled, but the framework and certain 'trap doors' were all dreamed up and perfected over time.
The last round of mission creep:
In 1960 (before Medicare) healthcare was 5.2% of GDP and government funding provided only 24% of the total expenditure. Since Medicare and Medicaid were entitled in 1965, the national health expenditure has risen to 17% of GDP. Your government would have you believe that nationalization of the healthcare system beyond the 47% controlled by government today would reduce your costs (of the $2.3 trillion spent on healthcare in 2008, approximately $1.1 trillion was funded buy the various government programs in the U.S.). The Congress would have you believe that the enactment of Medicare, Medicaid and other federal subsidies had nothing to do with the problems we face today, that they contributed nothing to the runaway cost of healthcare in this country. The President would have you believe that only if we cede more control will costs begin to rationalize. They also say the new-new program will cover everyone and reduce costs at the same time. This author might be from the sticks, but three-card monte is easy to spot.

Yes, soon to look like this I'm sure: http://feverishthoughts.com/oddplanet/2008/03/19/...
Any piece of legislation that needs to be rammed down our throats during the Christmas week by using back room negotiations, middle of the night votes and "incentives" for politicians is not right for this country.
Throw it out and start over again.
This time try to bring the whole bill in under 200 pages. Thanks.
Did he just say, "We Democrats now have a way to screw a lot of you and as we build on this plan we will be able to screw all of you"? Please, It's Christmas time enough lies, half truths, and just plain crap.
Hey Tom Harkin you best be finding you a starter home back home. The Democrats are crashing and burning, the American People do not want your radical approach. Obama's numbers go into the tank two days after you Dems cram down this health care debacle (look at Rassmussen poll today). Now there is an instant sign of disapproval for you.
But Harkin, Nelson, Pelosi, Reid, etc. are kamikazes for the Democrat Union Party. They only care about the Democart Union and their special radical groups, to hell with the American People.
The only thing we have is and unconstitutional manadate to buy insurance from a facist monoply and a couple of million voters in Iowa who didn't even have a Republican party with enough courage to run a candidate, any candidate, against Tom Harkin last year.
I knew it, that is why the weasel Reid and his cohorts were behind closed doors…its all in building a foundation to work on.
The Democrats are squatters. They must be removed in 2010.
You Patronizing hump.
I seem to remember reading that upon the inception of Medicare critics were aghast when they saw that the projected cost by 1990 could potentially be 12 billion dollars. The actual expense by 1990 was 120 billion. Mission creep?
To Nick, the article's author: I know it's off topic, but did you really need to begin your article by using the Lord's name in such a manner? I understand about freedom of speech, but such language doesn't add to your otherwise excellent message.
Harkin-smarkin. i know people in Iowa and their just like ol' smarkin, dumber than s_ _ t. they want everything for free. f-um all!

A REAL study of USA vs. UK! Nothing but the FACTS! That'll stick it to me!
Good points well made, these people realize that thier time is limited. The hard working AMERICAN people will exact payment by removings these criminals for remaking the American dream into a nitemare. I can't wait for the lawsuits to start. I can only hope that these supporters bet the ranch on this and come up snake eyes.
ROT IN HELL.
Did anyone listen to Harry Reids speech beofre the vote on Sunday night – well I did and he was talking about this kid who couldn;t get legs …. I was trying to look the kid up to see if I could find more information about that but I found the same speech which he used in July…
I guess it worked in July too

Mr. Harkin, Who will protect us from the abuses of our Government ?? Surely it is not YOU and your brethren.
Abuse of the American people has ramped up 1000 fold in 2009. The Democrat Union Party is over achieving.
Starter home? Rubbish! It's an entitlement shelter with working Americans making the payments. Hope there is enough wood left over to build a gallows.
Fire up the bulldozers, then.
I honestly can't think of ONE politician that I can say I trust!! They are ALL such liars and cheats, all they want is total dictatorship of our great country! YOU CAN'T HAVE IT!!! Americans will NOT stand for you idiots in Washington to control US!! WE will fight you to the death!!!
[...] This guy and his fellow travelling useful idiots are a socialist’s [...]
Starter home, huh. As far as I'm concerned it's rented until next Nov. and then I plan on breaking the lease.
Look at all the wonderful cities that the dems and unions have helped out. New York City after 96yrs of democrate rule the continued rise in the crime rate, schools some of the worst the nation, Rudy comes in and turns it arounds in less than two terms.
THROW THESE GOD DAMN BUMS OUT!
Screw the crooked insurance companies. Single Payer healthcare for all. The big corporations are buying our congressmen as fast as we can elect them.
It's amazing these thugs can do this with a straight face.
Oh, they get really mad if you laugh at them or question them. Now, there's an old trick. Bullying. It's been around for years.
Well all I have to say about this scam , is Joe Wilson said it best when he said YOU LIE, because thats all husain obama has done since he he came to AMERICA from kenya. He reminds me of those modern day pirates from samollia . he has done the same thing to AMERICA. I hope he enjoys going to hell when he dies. As far as I'm concerned I wish he would hurry the f&%k up.
We can't trust them, therefore they don't deserve one ounce of our respect.
No trust, no respect.
