Reason.tv: A True Tale of Canadian Health Care
by Nick GillespieMany advocates of health-care reform are admirers of Canada’s state-run, no-opt-out, single-payer system. Indeed, in 2003, President Barack Obama voiced enthusiasm for such a health-care program.
Proponents of Canadian-style health care should meet Cheryl Baxter, a Canadian citizen who waited years for hip-replacement surgery, only to be told that her operation would not happen any time soon. Instead of waiting, Baxter did what an increasing number of Canadians are doing: She flew to a clinic in the United States, paid out of pocket, and had a life-altering surgery in a matter of weeks rather than years.
Baxter’s experience doesn’t just throw damning light on Canadian health care. The sort of clinic she went to in Oklahoma suggests a different way of delivering health care in the United States, too: A simple fee-for-service
model in which providers openly advertise their prices, service, and reputation. Rather than a frustrating, complicated mess of intermediaries such as employers and insurance companies, U.S. health-care reformers should think about bringing medicine into line with the same dynamics that help deliver great service at great prices throughout most other parts of the economy.
While Canadian health care is certainly cheaper than its U.S. counterpart (health care spending in Canada is about 10 percent of GDP versus 16 percent in the United States), it is not necessarily better or more equitable. As a recent National Bureau of Economic Research comparison concluded, “Americans are more likely to report that they are fully satisfied with the health services they have received and to rank the quality of care as excellent.”
Not only do Americans have far greater access to basic diagnostic tools ranging from mammograms to CT scans, the researchers found “the health-income gradient is actually more prominent in Canada than in the U.S.” That is, wealthy Canadians receive far better care compared to low-income Canadians than rich Americans versus poor Americans.
“A True Tale of Canadian Health Care” was produced by Dan Hayes and Peter Suderman. Interviews were filmed by Alex Manning and the segment is hosted
and scripted by Nick Gillespie. Approximately 5.11 minutes.
Reason.tv would like to thank the Independence Institute for arranging and underwriting travel to Canada for Suderman and Manning.

I have some good friends in Canada. The system there is deplorable. Copied here, with bureaucrats running the show, it will be a disaster of epic proportions. In short order, everyone will be driving '57 Chebbies. Someone needs to call the Head Negroe in charge and tell him the train is fixing to jump the tracks. You wanted Hope and Change? I heard Rush today say Hoax and Change. I'll take one step further, and you heard it here first, the Obama Progressive Revolution is nothing but HOAX and CHAINS. It is REPARATIONS, Period.

Cowboy U r right on as usual. The Reid and Pelosi bunch are trying so hard to pull the wool over us and it reminds me of what Obama did to anyone who was dumb enough to vote for him for President. Unfortunately he 'Obama' was saying Hope and Change but he never once said or detailed what he meant by Hope n Change so we got completely boon boggled. Well I shouldn't say we because I know most who frequent this site didn't fall for this guy!!!

Preach it, brother man. You ain't wrong and you sure as HELL ain't lyin'!
Heard Herman Cain relate a story of an American either working or visiting in London who had an angina attack….he was wheeled into a hospital room on a gurney where 7 other people were waiting. He waited more than a week for a stent, in the meantime they shot him up with blood thinner until the procedure. In the US, it's safe to say that he would have received the stent within one day. These stories are not publicized by the lame stream media. By the way, how is socialized medicine working in Massachusetts? Probably about like it went in Tennessee, an unmitigated disaster.
Sorry man, didn't mean to preach, or get on a soapbox. These retards torque me off. Only in America, would we hand the greatest economy the world has ever seen, to an ignorant Moocha Militant Mulatto, a man who has never worked above Community Organizer, a "man" who has not so much as held a job as even an assistant manager at a McDonalds, or a Popeyes Chicken, and put him in charge of creating jobs. What a friggen joke! We got what we deserved. We just got sodomized.
So strange, innit, how so many black "leaders" don't actually give a damn for their so-called constituents. That poor woman (You probably heard her) was jubilant about Obama's win. She said she wouldn't have to worry about her car payment or her mortgage any more, and that she did something for Obama (gave the vote) and now he was gonna do sump'n for her.
Poor people in this country are far better off to allow the achievers to achieve. There is more largess to spread around during good times (not that I believe in spreading it).
It's a disgustment (is that a word?).
What will be intresting is with all the new folks getting covered (interpret that as illegals), how long till they restrict fee for service Canadians from recieving any care here? I say 12 to 18 months. Then it's time to head to Asia for them and us!
Problem is the preaching is going to the choir.
Libs won't be deterred and mods for the most part are getting on board more each month.
It's all a waiting game and praying is one of the only things we can do to prevent the damage this country will incur until the elections. I have no faith that the DemoRats won't do what it takes to concoct, intimidate and outright steal the elections of the next three years.
But I'm more optimistic than some…..

I am not optimistic.
I am a realist.
We are witnessing the Fall of the Roman Empire.
We are doing so live, and in real time, online, on the tube, on talk radio.
You are right, we can sit here and preach to the choir, and bitch amongst ourselves, but there is nothing we can do about it. It is like bad sex, grit your teeth and bear it. It is going to take something drastic to change course.
It won't be long now. Soon you will see people taking to the streets in a peaceful way, but yet forceful. We will stop standing around the parks and listening to speakers. We will start marching down the streets in real numbers. Washington DC was just the beginning, a small Million Man beginning.

Cowboy Logic speaks the truth. I personally believe it will take a shooting war to change anything, if then. I fully expect an "orchestrated crisis", to quote Cloward and Piven, to spark a reason for citizen disarmament. This whole "healthcare" hoax is nothing but a communist Trojan horse power grab, and it won't be complete withoout a total gun-grab. According to WorldNetDaily, their "pink slip" campaign has so far resulted in 8.25 million pink slips being delivered to every socialist in Congress (that's over 15,420 apiece; stacks over 5 ft. tall in their offices) and they're ignoring those. They won't acknowledge anything but violence, which I believe they're trying to incite. So much for that "hope and change," or was it "hoax and chains", to steal a phrase?
HOAX AND CHAINZ.
It's all Opaquely Transparent now……….
Brilliant, just BRILLIANT ; that's what it is, for sure……HOAX AND CHAINS; sadly.
And he's STILL blaming Bush for EVERYTHING. Just WHEN does what happens become "his"?

We have to many variables in the US, that are “working against the average taxpayer” that pays their own way. First we have illegals crossing the border for work, and some of these employers enjoy cheap labor. They know they won’t complain because they’ll be sent back. Secondly, these very same people choose NOT to buy healthcare insurance on their cheap wages. Filling up emergency rooms who are required by law to take care of these people. I know for a fact one California border hospital had to lock their doors because they went broke! These women comeover here and have their “anchor babies,” further giving them more so-called RIGHTS! On those 2 ISSUES ALONE-YOU’RE NOT HEARING anything about barricading the border. Until that ISSUE is resolved -Mexico is going to drain the healthcare system. We have a country that takes in immigrants and “rolls out the RED CARPET” FOR 7 YEARS! These people are also making useof/abusing our healthcare system. Then they go back to their own country after their educated on American soil by American taxpayers and we’re still called the American PIG! Fourth, we have people here in our OWN COUNTRY that choose NOT to buy health insurance for various reasons. That’s their CHOICE and ALSO RISK! But then again being a RISK-EMERGENCY ROOMS are required by LAW to take in everybody. Even if Reid&Piglosi FORCE Americans to buy into this horrible single-payer plan, there arn’t enough jail beds to put ALL of those in jail that are going to “passively resist” this. TO TOP IT OFF-I have spoken to several people that if this passes-DOCTORS are going to quit! RESULT-will be paying “through the nose” for a healthcare plan you’ll have NO ACCESS TO! GRADUATE HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS-are NOT GOING INCURE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS in educational costs for 30grand a year! Not to mention HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS ARE REQUIRED TO WORK WEEKENDS/HOLIDAYS. The younger generation REFUSE to work that hard!
It was announced last week in the province of British Columbia that they were cutting 1/3 of the MRI's to be done due to budget cuts. Just heard that the Senate has come to an agreement for Health Care…be afraid, be very afraid if it is anything like ours.

We are on the same page singing from the same hymnal. It is time to call a spade a spade and drive this commie liar out of our White House. Oh, and let him take his Hollywood and academia lefties with him. I want them all rounded up and put on the next cattle car to Cuba or Yemen or Iran or wherever the hell commie frequent flier miles apply. I want them off the damn ranch and away from the backsides of my cattle. They are doing us just as bad and not a one of them have even bothered to kiss me. Now that ain't right no how. Sarah is more a man than that poser ever will be.
Obamacare is Soylent Green………………………….in spades.
The next time I have to take to the street to get my voice heard, I'm pretty sure I won't feel very peaceful about it! I am sick and tired of screaming and no one hearing me!!!
I almost feel sorry for the poor blacks that were bussed to the polls by ACORN , with the promise that if they voted for Obama, he would give them everything for free…I'm sure that 'they' don't read these blogs on the computer, so they will just keep on dreaming that one day their 'hope and change' will be realized…by the time they wake up it will be too late, and they will wonder why everything they were told is not happening…they have been so programmed to believe that everything that happens (not in their favor) is Bush's fault…..by then they will know what slavery is really all about, just like the rest of us! Unless WE THE PEOPLE STOP these commies from taking over our country!! Think 'Red Dawn'…I'm just sayin'……
I feel qualified to respond to this due to a repeated personal experience I have had in the last five years. I have had three different Canadian friends come stay at my place in Florida to do just that, pay out of pocket for a procedure they would have to wait more than a year for in medical "utopia" Canada.
One with a knee surgery that was planned for 18 months out in Canada, the problem was she was ruining her good knee by favoring the bad one, the Doctor here told her she would likely have needed surgery on the other one had she waited the 18 months.
I had a similar experience myself in Germany, I lived there for 9 years. I had to wait 14 months to get my tonsils out, I flew to the States and had them out in an afternoon visit to my Father's Doctor. (For 275 bucks)
Reno, you are right. He only duped the stupid. The have nots that want to take from US that have, and not work for it, just like Obama never worked for it. he is nothing but a smooth, slimey, snake oil salesman. The retards all thought if they elected a homeboy, they'd all be "Obama Rich" also. Now black unemployemnt is over 50%, but that is a misleading number also. Of that 50% how many would want a real job? 5%? Of that number, how many would show up every day to keep it? We have ALL just been screwed.
We have set up a web site, namesoftheliving.com, specifically to collect wonderful stories like this. It is a shame that the Democrats, in trying to secure the greatest power grab since FDR, will willingly destroy the single greatest entity in the world for advancements in medicine, the United States health care system. It is even sadder that it is possible that some well meaning, but woefully uninformed Republicans will go right along with them.
Shoot naw, man, I wasn't complaining. I was proud of ya.

sure hope you're right.. we shoulda been doing it a long time ago.
Wisconsin started or expanded WI Health Care last year….There'sa 20,000 people who are waiting in line for services and WI ran out money in the budget for BadgerCare…WI is a Socialist, Progressive State and we're getting sick of it.
Generally we are to pray for "fallen" leaders to have a change of heart. In addition, we can pray for the enemies of Christian America to experience God's Judgement and Intervention for us. A good one is Psalms Ch 91, the soldiers prayer. America started as a Christian Republic, right? Now it is behaving like an atheist democracy and will simply follow the pattern of falling of atheist, amroal democracies. Takes about 200 years to rise and fall. Roman-type Democracies are destined to be Gone with the Wind, FOREVER acdg to the Book of Daniel.
Daniel beats Nostradamus always.
Why doesn't ObamaCare include Dental Work?
Always good to talk from experience. I was a Canadian and then became a US citizen in 1998. Now I live in China. Guess what? The Chinese system re health care is pretty good. It might surprise you that even these totalitarian commies decided that their national health care was out of control so they changed it overnight to "A simple fee-for-service model in which providers openly advertise their prices, service, and reputation." It works. Services have improved, medical staff are getting better wages, and facilities have been renovated as new ones are being built. After 8 years I'll be returning home to SoCal soon and I'm worried about what might happen if I get sick there while this fool is still POTUS. To repeat, keep the powder dry and get ready to pass the ammunition. This BS has got to stop; it's time to Cowboy-up my friends.
I have a chronic disease and that video scared me. Eventhough I fly out of town to see my doctor my copay is still $30, I like having that option.
What is common with this example (Canadians going to the US) and other stories of elderly americans heading to mexico for treatment is that the government is not involved, and you can choose the market you buy your treatment from. If you want a real healthcare market, stop government optioon now!
My uncle is under the Canadian health care system and had to wait 2.5 months to get an emergency open heart surgery. One has to question, does the government intentionally want the process to "slow" down in order to cut costs (i.e. have people in need of immediate attention die)??
Great video. Demonstrates how any government assistance acts as a price support. It eliminates the downward pressure which an underserved market can exert on prices, because markets abhor a lack of consumers. Can't wait until people who understand economics get back in charge of making decisions.
But I wonder, how is post-op care handled? Does Canada provide the physical therapy, even though they did not perform the surgery?
Cowboy, I'm with you on the message but…….. Any reference to color or race just dilutes that message in my opinion. Stay on target with the message that matters, his policy (or lack thereof). Race or color has NOTHING to do with ANY discussion on ANY of this administrations policies or plans. Peace.
I am an American living here in Canada. At times the medical system here is good, especially when there is an emergency you do get seen or if you are not able to pay but have an medical issue that needs to be dealt with. On the downside though, there are many people without a family doctor and of course the waiting lists for treatment can be very long. I had emergency surgery a few months ago and did not heal properly. I have been waiting to see a surgeon to find out why it has not healed now for 4 months and was suppose to wait another three. Thankfully there was a cancellation and I will finally see the surgeon in a few weeks. We may have "free" health care here but it still does not cover everything. I know my parents in the States have insurance and it covers medical, dental and eye care. Here our medical system does not cover dental, eye care etc. My husband, who was born with hearing difficulties, needs hearing aids but those are not considered a health issue and therefore are not covered by the medical system up here. Keep up the good work there in the US and do not let the system change to a single payer system!
I would need some real, practical lessons on how not to be peaceful and w/o a gun. Remember the old sit-in days…and the marches of the civil rights movement….something like that possibly. But the marxists deserve a bullet.
When what happens is good. Duh.
"Unemployment is down 0.2%? I did that!"
I have to agree. I usually agree 100% with what Cowboy writes, but the race card is deplorable and despicable no matter who plays it.

Another myth perpetrated by the US health care lobby. My hip replacement took place approximately four months after making an appointment with the surgeon. All expenses were paid for including pain meds, physiotherapy etc.
Every civilized nation in the world has some form of publicly funded health care yet the lobbyists frame this as Marxism. Thank God I live in an enlightened country such as Canada and don't have to put up with the mass selfishness south of the border. The funny part is that most of these right wing reactionaries regard themselves as good Christians.
