Reason.tv: How to Fix Health Care or, Lasik Surgery For The Medical Debate
by Nick GillespieHealth care “reform” is coming. But what’s the best way to fix our health care system, which is an inefficient, complicated mess of private actors, third-party payers, public subsidies, and innumerable state and federal regulations? Should we place our faith in the government or in the free market?
ObamaCare supporters argue that the answer lies in more government—more subsidies, more regulations, a law mandating individuals buy health-insurance coverage and, of course, more taxes to pay for it all.
The alternative is to base reforms on what works in the other five-sixths of the U.S. economy, where choice and competition increase quality and drive down prices over time.
Can a market-based health care system work? We can begin to answer this question by looking at Lasik, a medical procedure that’s not covered by health insurance. And has gotten better—and cheaper—over time.
“How to Fix Health Care” proposes three simple reforms that will put us on a path to a health-care system that’s better, more affordable, and more accessible. And get this—these market-based reforms can be implemented without creating new government programs or raising taxes.
Approximately 8.30 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine and Meredith Bragg.

This video says it all in a very short, concise manner. I appreciate the example of Lasik's surgery price going down over the last twenty years, giving a perfect example of how the free market works. When left alone, the free market works!
Give me the ability to take care of myself! Don't tell me I must have medical insurance or that I must partake in the Public Option. It is very clear in my mind that this current proposal by Congress and O is nothing more than a way to take away my liberty afforded to me by my Forefather's!
Great article Mr. Gillespie!
Great examples, great video. If only Congress would pay attention…
"If only Congress would pay attention…"
Congress would read that as "How can we pay Congress more and give them more power…"
Congress has already proven without a doubt, that they do NOT care about their constituents, and can't be BOTHERED to read any bills that their cronies come up with!!
It makes too much sense, it puts too much power in the hands of the individual and leaves too little to the gov't, it doesn't further the socialist agenda of the Dims, it doesn't CHANGE things nearly as quickly and dangerously as BO has in mind, it doesn't demand our every bodily function in service of The State–they'll never buy it, while they believe that they can make US swallow it and pay for it.
Congress will only pay attention to your fax of a cancelled check written to the opponent.
The free market may not be perfect, but it is self-correcting. Bad government programs never go away. They just grow.
Didn't you vote for Obama? The rest of your editorial staff did, you bitch! Fuck off Nick
I agree! WTF???
I have "pe..s" in a link (a story in cuba) and was sent to editor purgatory
How the heck did this comment get through?
The only thing that will stop the mad dogs in government is to force them to balance the budget, and limit thier abilty to collect income.
Constitutional Amendments that did that would cripple the progressive movement, I am afraid big moves are the only moves worth considering at this point in the long run.
fantastic doc – i agree with everything said. Unfortunately, how do we get healthcare to the vunerable in our society (i.e. poor, elderly etc.).

Common sense and simplicity are anathema to Congress.
Finally the doctors speaking. Great stuff! America should always support capitalism and free market in all decisions in congress. Keep it Constitutional.
i'd add cosmetic surgery, dentistry, and veterinary medicine as other healthcare oriented fields that flourish without a lot of government, or government-controlled insurance…
Speakin gof Constition what happened here? The government health bill :

Page 58 and 59: The government will have real-time access to an
individual's bank account and will have the authority to make electronic
fund transfers from those accounts. Is this true? if it is I am now downright scared!
I'm extremely grateful for the healthcare over here in the UK. America is great and all, but it can kick your a** if you are poor. Even being middleclass over there isn't easy. A reform is definitely needed.
Cheers.. Yet another teriffic entry, it’s precisely why we return for a wordpress bog over and over again!

However, the good news is, there could be some help. This help could come from acupuncture. Now, studies have already shown that acupuncture can increase fertility in women, but can it do the same for men. That is the topic that we are going to talk about today.
