ObamaCare Is the Democrats’ New Kansas-Nebraska Act
by Michael ZakHas the Democratic Party ever enacted a law as atrocious as its government takeover of the American people’s healthcare? Has the Democratic Party ever enacted a law so unpopular? Yes and Yes.

In 1854, Democrats controlled both houses of Congress and the presidency. Their top priority was to repeal the Missouri Compromise prohibition of slavery in the northern territories. The author of this infamous legislation, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, was Stephen Douglas, a Democrat Senator from Illinois and owner of a slave plantation in Mississippi.
Senator Douglas claimed the law would be a final solution to the slavery question, so that Congress could move on to other issues. In fact, the Kansas-Nebraska Act sparked a political firestorm. Opponents of slavery – and the police state and economic stagnation that went with it – understood that, if unchecked, the slave system would expand throughout the territories and then the entire nation.
As the Democrat-controlled Supreme Court would soon prove with its 7-2 Dred Scott decision (both Republicans dissenting), pro-freedom Americans feared that the judiciary would uphold the expansion of slavery. Many Democrats were already touting slavery (not for themselves, of course) for poor whites, too. “Free Society!” declared a prominent Democrat newspaper, “We sicken at the name!”
Every American was forced to choose sides. One was either for the free market system or against it; there was no middle ground.
As Alexis De Tocqueville observed: “Socialism is a new form of slavery.” Today’s congressional Democrats who voted to impose socialized medicine on the nation while exempting themselves should bear in mind Abraham Lincoln’s words: “Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally.”
Denouncing the Kansas-Nebraska Act, Lincoln warned against submitting to political masters:
“If there is anything which it is the duty of the whole people to never entrust to any hands but their own, that thing is the preservation and perpetuity, of their own liberties, and institutions.
Not all Democrats went along with the Kansas-Nebraska Act. In protest, Charles Sumner, Salmon P. Chase and others – who would soon join the Republican Party – issued an Appeal of the Independent Democrats in Congress to the People of the United States:
“We arraign [the Kansas-Nebraska Act] as a gross violation of a sacred pledge; as a criminal betrayal of precious rights; as part and parcel of an atrocious plot to exclude from a vast unoccupied region immigrants from the Old World and free laborers from our own States, and convert it into a dreary region of despotism, inhabited by masters and slaves.
Language fails to express the sentiments of indignation and abhorrence which it inspires; and no vision less penetrating and comprehensive than that of the All-Seeing can reach its evil issues.
We appeal to the people. We warn you that the dearest interests of freedom and the Union are in imminent peril.
We entreat you to be mindful of that fundamental maxim of Democracy – EQUAL RIGHTS AND EXACT JUSTICE FOR ALL MEN. Do not submit to become agents in extending legalized oppression and systematized injustice over a vast territory yet exempt from these terrible evils.
We implore Christians and Christian ministers to interpose. Their divine religion requires them to behold in every man a brother, and to labor for the advancement and regeneration of the human race.
Whatever apologies may be offered for the toleration of slavery in the States, none can be offered for its extension into Territories where it does not exist, and where that extension involves the repeal of ancient law and the violation of solemn compact. Let all protest, earnestly and emphatically, by correspondence, through the press, by memorials, by resolutions of public meetings and legislative bodies, and in whatever other mode may seem expedient, against this enormous crime.
For ourselves, we shall resist it by speech and vote, and with all the abilities which God has given us. Even if overcome in the impending struggle, we shall not submit. We shall go home to our constituents, erect anew the standard of freedom, and call on the people to come to the rescue of the country from the domination of slavery. We will not despair; for the cause of human freedom is the cause of God.”

Well, the Democrats finally found an enemy they were willing to commit whatever it takes to defeat. Unfortunately for them this enemy was the American people. While I agree with those who assert that this bill will be difficult to reverse, this nation achieved its greatness only through the steadfast refusal of patriots to surrender to the forces of tyranny and oppression throughout our history. Let there be no mistake, in enacting this legislation the President and his allies have chosen the path of tyranny. By resorting to back-room dealmaking, the blatant payoff of special interests, and every legislative contravention imaginable, Democrats have set in motion the largest seizure of power by the federal government since the New Deal, if not our history. All at the expense of personal liberty and free enterprise, and against the clearly expressed will of the vast majority of Americans.
I'll have to look and see if dental care is covered in this bill?
I'm afraid that this government may very well be leading us off the cliff to our next civil war. The union survived that one, but will it survive another?

This bill forces American citizens to engage in commercial activity upon pain of fine and imprisonment in order to pay for the "free" services provided to others.
16,000 new IRS agents. Who in there right mind would come up with a "health care plan" that adds that many IRS agents. No new Doctors. No new Nurses. Thousands of new IRS agents and hundreds of new panels and positions in the bureaucracy.
We compromised for 80 years with slavery before we stood up. We have now compromised for 80 years with big government. I think the comparison with the Kansas-Nebraska act is totally apt.

This is why I again point out that this is a Republic, not a Democracy. In any Democracy, either a direct or a Representative type, as a form of government, there can be no legal system which protects the individual or the minority against the unlimited tyranny by the majority in control. Democracy, as a form of government is utterly repellent to the tradional American system: that of a Republic, and its underlying philosophy, as expressed in the Declaration of Independence with the emphasis upon the people's forming their government so as to permit them to possess only "just powers" (limited powers) in order to make and keep secure the God-given, unalienable rights of each and every individual and therefore of all groups of individuals.
A republic has a different purpose and an entirely different form of government. Its purpose is to control the majority strictly, as well as all others among the people, primarily to protect the individual's GOD given unalienable rights and therefore for the protection of the rights of the minority and the liberties of the people in general.
The Definition of a Republis is: a constitutionally limited government of the representative type, created by a written constitution, adopted by the people and changeable only by amendments, with power divided between the three branches.

Somehow, that language got "snuck" into the bill withot our Master seeing it. ….The ultimate result of this legislation is to force alll citizens to go to "community health centers" for medical treatment. I can't wait! All of the advantages of the DMV and the postoffice while I wait for treatment for my sick child. (Unless, of course, I am a member of congress…..)

uh, Anon, read the bill – it does not say that an Insurer is no longer allowed to deny coverage. It just says that if they do they have to pay a fine. So if they decide that it is cheaper to pay the fine, than to pay for a chronic illness….. The bill also says if an insurance company find any misinformation on your insurance application, they can also deny coverage.
…and how are you going to keep your Dr. when your Dr. says (like many now do for Medicaid), "sorry, I don't take Govt. insurance – it's cash only, bud. A recent AMA survey shows that over 35% of Dr. say they will either leave the profession, or set up cash-based private practices.

Yes, what you pointed out is obvious to anyone who understands American history. Up until a couple of decades ago, Lincoln was seen as a leftist figure (he was – he imported dozens of European marxists to serve as commanders in the Union army) and Robert E. Lee was revered by most conservatives, North and South alike. Unfortunately, neo-conservatives have since infiltrated the GOP and virtually every aspect of the conservative movement. They have succeeded in warping history by political correctness and, now, you see many conservatives who actually believe that historical figures like Lincoln and MLK (an open marxist) were "conservative." In many ways, the Confederacy was fighting the same fight we are fighting today – the right to be free from interference by a large, centralized government. However, I guess most conservatives find it easier to call the South "racist" in their futile attempt to capture 6% of the black vote.
The democrats have always been about slavery, the progressives that took them over in the first part of the 20th century were fellow travelers (dont you love that phrase)

Both then and now, the Democrats denied Individual Rights from Natural Law, and both believed that if what they wanted was legislated, then that was all that needed to be done to make it 'right', and any consideration for true Rights, was unnecessary and irrelevant.

Among those present on May 30, 1854, when President Franklin Pierce (D-NH) signed the bill was the person who introduced the bill, Sen. Stephen Douglas (D-IL), who also was a slave holder on his plantation in Mississippi, and the Sec. of War, later the President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis (D-MS). Of course there were many others.
This was also the signified the final split between the Democratic-Republican Party and with the tiff between the progressive and the moderates in the Dems camp, as well as, the conservative and progressive Republicans could there be another party forming?

If that was the intention, well done. But don't expect approval from states' rights advocates. Thomas Jefferson saw the Missouri Compromise as a perilous step toward disunion and an attack on the rights of the states reserved in the Tenth Amendment. In 1823, he said this about the Missouri Compromise which separated northern from southern states: "The line of division now, is the preservation of State rights, as reserved in the Constitution, or by strained construction of that instrument, to merge all into a consolidated government." In other words, Jefferson saw the Missouri Compromise as a huge, unconstitutional expansion of federal power — a government take-over.
The two nineteenth century politicians you praised, Salmon Chase and Charles Sumner, were nationalists (what Jefferson would call "consolidationists") who gleefully kicked the Tenth Amendment every chance they got.
No IRS agent has ever cured anybody. Not a single one.

Forcing me to buy insurance at the threat of fines and jail time is tyranny. Sicking the IRS on my bank account for failing to comply is tyranny. Forcing the States to pay through the roof for health care expenses no government in their right minds are able to pay for is tyranny. Forcing doctors and hospitals to accept much lower fees for their services under threat of fines is tyranny. Forcing insurance companies – and States and the People – to accept every Tom, Dick and Harry that behave irresponsibly towards their health only to demand coverage as soon as they're in dire straits is tyranny.
The Ninth and Tenth Amendments are quite clear on the powers of the People and the States. That is why 13 states are suing Obamacare as of this moment.
The States know tyranny when they see it and so do the People.
This is spot on reporting. We are seeing history repeat itself by the same bunch of democrats that still don't understand what the word freedom even means. Whether its slavery or socialism-both are absolute enemies of freedom.

When "health care" passed the senate, the dems had that 60 seat majority. Now they don't.
