The Future of ACORN
by Michael Volpe
If you want to know what will happen to ACORN as a result of all the scandals and controversies, this story from Connecticut is a microcosm.
Its political allies fled. And with its national organization fighting for its life and unable to give any money, ACORN of Bridgeport is doing what other chapters have been doing across the nation, going independent, sort of.
This month, the group began a campaign to raise money and create two local nonprofits, one to concentrate on social issues, the other on political action. To be clear, the plan is to continue to work with other chapters on national issues through a federation, according to Emeline Bravo-Blackwood, a small business owner who is leading the effort to transform the group in Bridgeport.
So, more and more ACORN chapters are moving away from their current structure, which is one organization where all the local chapters answer to a national board, to a federation. Where have I heard that term federation in relation to ACORN? Oh yeah, it was in my interview with Wade Rathke. He explained that ACORN is one organization whereas COI, what Rathke now runs, is a federation. Here’s how Rathke described the difference.
a federation is a combination of autonomous organizations, like the AFL-CIO as an example, as opposed to being a single operating entity as ACORN is/was and an individual union, like SEIU for example is.
As we speak, more and more local ACORN chapters are becoming autonomous, creating their own funding streams, boards, etc. They would only work with the national organization on national issues but be totally autonomous.
That’s how COI (Community Organizations International) is structured as well. There are currently 7 different units within COI. Each is autonomous from each other. Now, ACORN itself is moving to structure itself in the same manner.
Now, let’s not start any rumors. I am not saying, and certainly Wade Rathke isn’t, that the hundred plus local ACORN affiliates are about to orchestrate a coup and suddenly move their newly formed FEDERATION to COI and move under his umbrella. That’s not happening. Instead, the locals have realized that the national organization has let them down, tarnished their name, and is no longer a source for creating revenue anyways.
Local chapters like the one in Bridgeport, Ct. are themselves not struggling. There are many like this. They’ve now realized that answering to the national organization is a growing liability. So, they are moving to structure themselves as a federation so that they would only need to partner themselves with the national organization when its convenient. Otherwise, they cut ties with them entirely. More than that, the name ACORN will be kept locally if it’s still perceived positively.
Now, many conservatives will wonder where the name ACORN can still be positive. Remember, this group is a very effective grassroots organizations. In local areas where ACORN has maintained a strong local presence for years, like in Bridgeport, Ct., the locals view ACORN very positively. At the same time, if the ACORN name becomes too toxic, all the locals in the new federation will be able to change their own name to whatever they want. That’s one of the benefits of being a federation.
What’s important to the current debate is that the locals see that the national organization’s jig is up and they are now jumping ship. By moving to cut ties from their unified structure and move to a federation structure, it also means the locals are cutting away from the stain that the national organization has marked on the group as a whole. The national organization’s power over ACORN will be next to nothing. They’ll no longer have any operational control over any chapter. They’ll work together on “national issues” but the national group can’t maintain their own funding, has a toxic brand, and face a plethora of bad press and lawsuits. How many national campaigns can they fund that way? So, if ever there was proof that the national ACORN is through, it’s the growing trend of local chapters to cut ties and turn themselves into a federation.

Different name. Same players. Same corrupt behavior. Still, there are those in our government who will continue to say they deserve taxpayer funds and provide it.

One set of cockroaches moving to another sewer tunnel because their's was uncovered. It will never change, only the names and paperwork. The Beast's tentacles keep morphing into other shapes and if you think our head chief and community organizer is not aware of this, then you've been in lalaland too long. It will business as usual by 2010 for the November elections.
Acorn is the nerve center and private slush fund laundering facility to George Soros, Obama and Congress. Keep crushing it until it goes down.
a federation is a combination of
autonomousCorpt organizationsSo they increase deniability, everyone is an independent, there is no national organization calling the shots.
Just as there are all these independent operators doing stuff, there is no "family," no Mafia.
And if you think different, ha, just try to prove it, copper!
Yup, the Chicago Way marches onward.
Wake Up America! COI is rahtkes end run around the rule of law! check his books! he's take acorn money and started this other criminal enterprise hoping we don't notice! Shut this guy down along with Acorn, SEIU and COI and every other group Rahtke is involved with. They all criminal enetrprises! Obma is part of it! remember tricky dick Nixon? If you don't read up on him! Obama makes him look like mother teresa! Obama took hundreds of millions of dollars in illegal cam paign contributions! He's still pushing global warmingeven though it been proven a lie! he is blocking the federal investigation of Acorn and SEIU! wake up america!
Take back your country. Stop them from stealing your wealth and making slaves of your children! Wake up! The corruption is the same just different names! same crime bosses same criminal behaviors, same crimes, just a new name to to buy time so they can keep stealing from you! Now is the time for civil disobience and soon we may need to move further inot the revolution to save our country! wake up America! Take to the streets demand that Acorn, SEIU and COI be closed down and the rathkes, holders and obamas be jailed for crimes of fraud, tax evation, illegal political contributions, voter fraud, voter registration fraud, union election fixing, intimidation of voters,co-mingling of funds, embezzelment, money laundering, lying on federal contracts, thief of government funds, failing to up hold their oath of office, aiding and abetting criminals, high crimes and misdermeanors and a whole host of other crimes! wake Up America! only you can stop this! Only we the people can froce these traitors and thieves from office and into jail! They are using politcal corectness as weapon to steal your rights and your childrens rights. Wake up before it is too late!
Hmmm, lets look at this. You don't have direct government support as a large entity, i.e. al-Qaeda, so you break down to cells & place layers of plausible deniability to supporters that are in the government to keep finances & favors coming your. If one of these cells gets caught doing something it shouldn't, "well, that was them, not us". You wait until you have remodeled & rebuilt your group to look "respectable" & allow open support by government officials again. Then in, oh, let's say 7 years, re-introduce yourselves as a new unified grassroots organization & we start the game all over again.
The old shell game. The truth is the government loves ACORN and will not let it die. It may have to change its name and fire a handful of people, but it will not die.
Before ACORN got into the news a few weeks ago, I had never heard of it. I wonder how many other similar organizations are out there being funded by my tax dollars.
Unfortunately, I can't prove anything and either can anyone else for now but we all know they are all connected. All we need is a few people to tell the whole story. It might cost a few million, but it would be worth it. Hell, if I had the money I would pony up just for the thrill of it.
I am sure it will work out better if we localize our CHILD PROSTITUTION business!
nice analogy : )

Not necessarily a bad thing. Unlike many of the prior commenters, I think local control could be beneficial, at least to the local chapters. Of course the opportunity for corruption will still be there, but I suspect the autonomy may actually produce some chapters who actually do some good. Among the many victims of ACORN are people who joined the organization with the hope of improving their community. With freedom, perhaps some of them will do so. At the least, Bridgeport ACORN won't be wasting my St. Louis dollars.
Won't it be harder to track them when they are operating under a new slew of different names? But then again, they are not very bright, and they tend to leave paper trails…

Obama administration selects fathers' rights attorney Jeffery Leving to head first White House Roundtable on Responsible Fatherhood and Healthy Families
Afro-Netizen received the following press release from the law office of Jeffery Leving.
If this new presidential roundtable takes on the tone of Obama's infamous 2008Father's Day speech, it may wind up causing more trouble than traction among parents who supported Obama in hopes that his administration would reform and create policies that encourage parental involvement in lieu of those that all but destroy already challenged families.
The White House Selects Fathers’ Rights Attorney Jeffery Leving as Resource:
First Annual White House Roundtable on Responsible Fatherhood
(Chicago, IL) On Wednesday, August 5, 2009, Fathers’ Rights Attorney Jeffery Leving will join senior White House staff to discuss strategies to promote responsible fatherhood and healthy families. This is the first White House Roundtable on Responsible Fatherhood and Healthy Families in Chicago. This is the beginning of President Barack Obama’s national conversation on responsible fatherhood and community involvement. Michael Strautmanis, Chief of Staff to the Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Relations and Public Liaison (Valerie Jarrett) will be in attendance at the private Roundtable event with Jeffery Leving.
This private Roundtable will focus on strengthening fathers and families and address the challenge of father absence in America and will be held at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Forum located at 725 W. Roosevelt Road. The private Roundtable is scheduled from 3:00 – 5:00pm and will be followed by a Town Hall Meeting at 6:30pm. President Barack Obama will participate through a video conferencing link.
This event is co-sponsored by the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Center for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships and the Administration for Children and Families.

We the people need get these players and go to jail.
It's funny that a communistic, centrally controlled organization failed and then adopts the business model of all the groups and organizations they fight so hard to defeat, gotta love the irony.
This is the same pattern Al Qaeda has adopted, leaderless resistance. There is no top-down leadership, nothing to infiltrate. Just autonomous cells each working toward the same ends. Nobody needs to give them their marching orders because they all know what they must do to further their cause (Socialism).
OMG!!!!!!!!
So ACORN DOES get the whole "Tenth Amendment" argument, and that centralization can be BAAAAADDDDD!
Seriously, if ever there was an analogy, to explain the protections offered by sovereignty, well…except for the word "acorn", this is a perfect one. So, then…it IS valid for me, in Missouri, to want the bulkheads in place that protect me from the financial malfeasance of open checkbook border states… who bleed free services beyond their own balance…
Go Broke Alone….
the new ACORN mantra…
Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately ACORN management are advocates only. They don't give any direct hands-on help to uplift the poor but use them to agitate for whatever cause the Demos request for a few dollars/hr and no other benefits. It's serfdom. Real charities actually get them ready for work by helping them find jobs, help with resumes, clothes etc. Charities work! ACORN advocates!. Big difference.
A great way of putting it. I was thinking how cutting ties would really work with ACORN until I read your post and it hit me like a ton of bricks.
many conservatives will wonder where the name ACORN can still be positive.
How about when you plant one in a pile of cow shit and a mighty oak tree grows.
That's exactly it! A pile of garbage, called a pile of refuse, is still the same thing; as is ACORN/COI.
At least as early as last spring, lots of people knew that ACORN was going to stop using that name and regenerate as COI.
Breaking a part is yet another part of this trick; they'll still be what they always were; just claiming not to be.
As a Bridgeport resident, I was pretty surprised to find this story on the FRONT PAGE of The Connecticut Post, our local newspaper. The Post has hardly covered this ACORN scandal at all, and have only run a few articles sympathetic to the group and all the "good work" that they supposedly do. On top of that, the Post's assistant editorial page editor, Hugh Bailey, has been writing columns vehemently DEFENDING ACORN (in spite of the non-stop explosion of evidence) and attacking those who've exposed ACORN for the massive fraud that it is. Simply put, The Connecticut Post, Hugh Bailey, and the rest of the leftwing media continue to trumpet that (A) ACORN can do no wrong, (B) ACORN has been victimized by "extremists", and (C) ACORN must be allowed to continue to do its much needed work. The coming months should be very interesting. As Hannah, James and Breitbart keep exposing more of ACORN's true nefarious nature, the media will keep playing games with the truth.
My fear is if goverment doesn't take care if this cancer someone else will. It's only a matter of time before average citizens take the law in their own hands to stop the fraud. I believe that's what they want. Then they label the opposing party as racist.
Libs and dems are the only people on the planet that think you can pick up a turd by the clean end.
The media seems to wait until ACORN has some personal impact on their (media's) hometown, before they bother to inform people! ACORN should be held accountable for every criminal charge!!
Time for Sunday LOL Funnies… laughing AT the Dear Leader… not with him!
http://reaganiterepublicanresistance.blogspot.com...
ok, well just spread stuff out decentralize and it will make it harder for good americans to catch us doing our immoral and criminal actions. anything to make stealing tax payer funds is ok.
As long as the citizen journalists are obeying the laws. They can use as many names as they want, but conservatives come in many different colors. They will call anyone against ACORN a racist whether you are black, asian, male, female, democrat, liberal, Christian, etc…it doesn't matter as long as they look like the victim.
Then take a chainsaw to it…burn it down…make toothpicks out of it.
Personally, I am all for instilling real fear into these jackasses. Our country has had enough of these rat b@$tards.
ACORN and SEIU are Communist organizations. See the proof, all the latest news and the deep, deep ties to Obama here: http://www.commieblaster.com/acorn/index.html
Can someone get a list of all those who supported (voted to continue funding) ACORN and put it on this site??
It's damn near impossible for honest people to stay one step ahead of criminals.
We should bring in Dr. Charlie Eppes from the Numb3rs series to run a mathematical analysis so we can lie in wait with our 'enforcers' in hand. My defense would be that it is my duty to protect the constitution of the United States of America. I'd be proud to stand along side the 3 Navy Seals being tried for protecting their country!
ACORN…RIP!!!
Thanks CommieBlaster, great link here. Everyone should check it out.
Not one more penny to the slush fund laundry mat of Obama and George Soros.
I don't quite accept the premise of this story – that the local units have been "tarnished" by the national organization. Seems to me just the reverse is true, that the odious behavior of large numbers of locals has tarnished the national brand. Not the the national is clean, far from it. But the scandals constantly pouring forth are actions committed by people working at the local level. The cumulative effect of all these "isolated" incidents paints a picture of a culture of corruption endemic in ACORN.
Apparently the cancer that is ACORN has decided to metastasize…
ACORN: helping blacks, commies, and union thugs to vote Democrat at 120% of registration. [No questions may be "axed" as they will be considered racist.] Glad to help.
Exactly. Those who still support Acorn are the ones to go after because they're inextricably tied to an outfit that's being investigated for fraud, racketeering, embezzlement, vote rigging, money laundering, etc. While they're at it, they shoudl look into the Tides Foundation. This is one of George Soros' babies and the organization to which Teresa Heinz Kerry donates large sums of money. It seems that John Kerry has been playing a much larger role in politics than he ever did before.
With a little bit of luck, this FRAUDULENT organization WILL NOT HAVE A FUTURE!
They will survive. Shine the light on them and they scatter, regroup, but they are still the same.
We the people need get these players and go to jail.
