Anniversary Post: ‘Big Government’ Rises Again
by Mike Flynn[Ed Note: This is the first post to run at BigGovernment. It was published two years ago today. It still seems relevant.]
In 1995, President Bill Clinton stood before the nation and proclaimed, “The era of big government is over.” The following year, the federal budget deficit stood at 1.4% of GDP. Thirteen years later, in 2008, the deficit had doubled, to just over 3% of GDP. This year, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the federal budget deficit will equal 11.4% of GDP.
As George Will would say, “Well.”
This is the real source of our “summer of discontent.” Yes, millions of Americans spent the month of August holding Tea Parties, attending town halls, organizing, marching and protesting against ObamaCare, i.e. Congressional and Administration proposals to reconstruct the entire health care sector. But to suggest that health care alone is at the root of this backlash is to miss the forest for the trees. To paraphrase Democrat strategist James Carville, “It’s the big government, stupid.”
Since last September when the financial markets stumbled, we’ve seen a Wall Street bailout, government takeovers of AIG, Citigroup, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, GM, Chrysler, and numerous banks. The Federal Reserve has opened its discount window to almost all-comers and has taken the unprecedented step of aggressively buying up the federal government’s own debt. Congress rushed through a “stimulus to nowhere,” moved closer to a “cap-and-trade” remake of the energy sector and openly talked about higher taxes and more regulation.
White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel famously said that, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.” Ronald Reagan said, “Government isn’t the solution to our problem. Government is the problem.” The administration has turned this observation upside down, proclaiming that Big Government will lead us to a better world. In August, we heard America singing, “Enough!”
The mainstream media and politicos from both parties were caught flat-footed by the push-back from average citizens. Each news-cycle brought a new theory for the protests: “astroturf,” angry “mobs,” distortions and misinformation, kooks and conspiracy nuts, and, inevitably (and perhaps most offensively) racism (MSNBC amazingly even cut the head off a black man holding a gun to make the point that white racist extremism was behind the entirety the protests). The elites have convinced themselves that, once Congress is safely cocooned on Capitol Hill, and engaged in some Kennedy-esque legislating—a tweak here, a nip-and-tuck there—ObamaCare will be back on track and the Administration can continue its march to reshape America.
The elites are whistling past the graveyard. The ground has shifted. It could just be that deficits above 10% of GDP are the new $4 a gallon gas, i.e. the tipping point that awakens the silent majority and recalibrates political dynamics. Americans are setting aside parochial self-interest and reaching to reclaim the legacy of the Founders.
“That government is best which governs least.” This phrase, attributed to Thomas Jefferson, is our nation’s founding principle. The American colonists did not throw off the mantle of British rule because the King failed to provide health care, individual subsidies or public works projects. They rebelled because he taxed ever greater shares of their earnings and increasingly injected himself into their daily lives. They risked, and in many cases sacrificed, their lives to free themselves and future generations from the whims of rulers.
The founding fathers did not constitute a government to give them things. It’s role was confined to protecting our natural rights. Rights we have inherently, not by grant of government. These rights secured, Americans had the freedom to organize their lives as they saw best. Their energies and imagination unleashed, our predecessors built the most prosperous, secure and peaceful nation in history. It was done in spite of Big Government, not because of it.
Reagan warned that “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” Our generation’s moment of decision is now. How we respond will shape forever the lives of our children and grandchildren.
It is rare that a people rise up, shoulder-to-shoulder, and stand against the dictates of a ruling class. The media and most of the political elites at the federal, state and local levels have told us, “We know better than you.”
In response, countless citizens have mobilized to tell the government, “No!”
To these Americans, we dedicate this site. Welcome.

Mr. Flynn – it's even more relevant now than it was then. We're several trillions more in the hole than we were then.
Yes, Big Government by Democrats must die. Criminal consequence for criminal corruptions of freedom.
"If ever a time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats
in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin."
Samuel Adams, 1776
To big to fail shot lady freedom right between the eyes.
I read that first post. In fact I page marked it and went to it everytime I launchedb BG. It took me a numer of months later to officially sign up. It made me feel good to know there are a lot of "us" out there….. of course sprinkled with a few knuckleheads too………..
Unlike the leftist sits that are littered on the web, Big DOES NOT discourage a difference of opinion!!! They might get thumbed down, but are still allowed on this site, unlike leftist sites, where your comment will be deleted! Especially if it contains the TRUTH!!
" Stimulus to nowhere" That sums it up Mr Flynn… I missed the launch of this site by a week or
so, but I remember laughing OUT LOUD reading others words as I began to realize how many articulate
like-minded folks there were spread across this nation. Knowing others shared my disgust of our "out of
control" government was very empowering.
WE THE TEA!!!
; )
It might be interesting to see the actual first thread.
I don't get it, if I go here
http://biggovernment.com/page/409/
The first one appears to be "And You Thought This Was All About Health Care…" and this thread shows up second.
But I guess this is it…

It's been a wild ride for sure, and y'all have definitely been living in the lefty's heads rent free ever since. Keep givin' em hell!
This government, this administration, believe that they are our rulers and it is up to them to dictate to us exactly what we need to do. This is understandable since there are an ever going group of people that live on the handouts of government. They are not educated, they have no moral compass and they have no respect of this great country. We may be forced to fight another American revolution as our forefathers predicted in order to save our country. The tea party movement is fighting back with our ballots in the last and coming elections. With God's strength, we will be able to win this war by that method as the alternative is unthinkable. As it stands now, 80% of the government needs to be eliminated to bring us to fiscal sanity and the same amount of regulations need to go.
They go much further than comment deletion. The actively ban you from posting. Those oh-so-tolerant-liberals seem to have rather thin skin when someone actually disagrees with them. Case in point? Our trolls. They can't go a single day without insulting, lying, misinforming and plain ol' hating on this site.
Re-reading this post made me realize that I have read every article on Big! What a ride! Keep it up! Keep us informed and We the People will keep us free!
I am willing to extend my hand, one last time, this far….: I believe there are many "Democrats" (who could be classified as "Old Democrat") who are as shocked at this administration as any "Conservative."
However they are as culpable as any "Good Catholic" with the "pedophile Priest" issue, any "moderate(?) Muslim" and Sharia Law vs US Constitutional Law, any "plantation owner" of a "village." And, yes Dem's, at this point you do own your own fully dependent "welfare villagers." "Democrats" you have been co-opted, best change soon.
That said, it is certainly my last "hand out" as things are being chopped off quickly.
The timing was perfect for the these sites. I read somewhere that obummer reads every word written about him. His nostrils must be flaring from sea to sea if he reads some of our comments related to the articles.
Yes, Mr. Obummer, we are not going to put up with this nonsense. We will not see our country raped and ravaged by you and your henchmen. I bet you never expected the patriotism that evolved or that "we the people" will wake up and declare you the "traitor" that you are.
Thanks to Andrew and all the fine men and women who made this possible. Happy Anniversary.
Ohh for the good ol days,…….2009
I wish good things for the growing Breitbart 'empire'.
Bart Breitbart has shown that we must and can draw the line of defense on conservative values. There's no need whatsoever to offer lip-service to the complaints and accusations spewing from the Left. We don't need to assume that 'their hearts are in the right place' or that we need to at least applaud their 'compassion' and motives.
breitbart sites offer something we've needed for decades- a huge public format where the leftists are confronted full bore.
Republican politicians should take note- you can express yourselves and your strong core values (if you have any), throwing off the chains of media/Democrat expectations and restrictions.
I truly appreciate the Bigs… particularly Big Government and Big Journalism. Since I haven't yet been able to land another job in radio, I'm glad I've been able to, at least in some small way, find my voice here. Congratulations on your second anniversary, and thanks for letting me be a part of this Big community!
Mike,
To borow a recent phrase from Jimmy Hoffa Jr., you sons of a bitches have made a difference.
We are defiantly alive and very kicking . . .

Nothing is more powerful than The American Citizens banding together. It gives strength, hope and focus to real Amricans who can see the infiltrators, users & abusers, a mile away. I treasure my fellow Americans here. You all are the real fabric of America and I admire your strong convictions and deep determination to preserve our American Culture and remove the nefarious invaders! We are a Band of Patriots or Tea Party Citizen warriors. Either way we are a force to be reckoned with, as it should be. Always on duty! God help those who underestimate U.S!
I've seen a steady stream of "always been a dem, until now" posts at a variety of political discussion groups. They often mention changing their registration to Independent. Seems like the dem party would 'get a clue' that BO & thug unions are really hurting the dems.
Sorry bout their rotten luck. ha ha
I'd rather amend the constitution for a third term for Bill Clinton, rather than a second for Barry.

I'd like to know how to become a contributor. I don't see any contact link on the site anywhere….unless I'm just blind and can't see it. Does anyone know how to become a blogger here? Thanks.
I first heard about this site on Mark Levin's show. After hearing him mention BigGov several times, calling it an excellent site, I said to myself I gotta check it out. Levin was right, of course (I love that guy), this site is a blessing.
Long live Breitbart.
Mr. President :
If you're reading this : Go home. Get out. And take all the other Regressives with you. You're ruining this country.
Go to Cuba. You'll fit in there.
"We've come a long way baby", NOT.
Obumble's recent speech mandating in his Mussolini-esque style, "Pass that bill". A $500 billion democrat money laundering scheme through a union conduit, shows the engine of naked facism continues to speed forward. Until O is out of power and the facist bureaucracies are eliminated, our work is not done.
Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism, as it is the merger of corporate and government power.
Benito Mussolini
History repeats itself as a large majority of the Founders went to their graves broke financially but NOT morally.
We too, must sacrifice!
"Stimulus to nowhere" was actually labor union and crony capitalist kickbacks.
One way to describe Tea Partiers is: voters who cannot be bought with their own money.
If you want to piss off a conservative lie to him. If you want to piss off a liberal tell him the truth.
Yes, and it was Bush and Republicans that brought big government back most recently, didn't they? It never really left, but whenever there's a national tragedy, such as 9-11, these scumbag politicians seize on that as an excuse to push this country forward towards further socialism. Bush called it "compassionate conservatism" and it opened the door to even more economic decline for this country with Obama and a Democrat congress. We're doomed and all conservatives can do is damn Obama and excuse Republicans.
So, what should Bush have done after 9/11 rather than declare war? Apologize to the terrorists? Yeah, that would have stopped all future attacks on the US much better than going after the cretins. But hey, it would have saved us lots of money, right?
!!!Excellent!!!
What did going to war have to do with Medicare part D, No Child Left Behind, increased subsidies to farmers, stimulus checks, TARP, bailouts, Sarbanes/Oxley, increased food stamp budget? That's only a partial list. Going after terrorists is fine. War in Iraq was another matter, however, but I'll leave that aside. All that other stuff was totally unnecessary and detrimental, but Bush and Republicans believed 9-11 gave them a mandate for doing of all that – acting like Democrats, in other words. We have the economy we have today to pay for all of that welfare excess, not to mention Obama's excesses.
Well, it's easy to dismiss the Bush administration as big government, but it is important to remember that for the last two years of Bush, 2/3 of the government was run by Democrats who went on a spending spree that then exploded under Obama. Even the improvements that Clinton made in welfare were reversed by Obama's stimulus plan, you know.
I wasn't a huge fan of Bush, but I really am sickened by what I am seeing now under Obama. It's not just the out-of-control government spending, it is also the push by the Left to silence their critics by limiting free speech. It's the signs I see around Los Angeles with pronouncements signed by "Barack Obama" for granting the construction of various stimulus funded buildings! That's taxpayer money, NOT Obama's money. Sorry, but that is a very tin-pot third world dictator ploy.
Happy Aniversary. Congratulations Mike and Andrew.
I really love this site and try to get here almost every day.
Breitbart is a modern hero. I only regret that I didn't debauch in college like he did.
"The following year, the federal budget deficit stood at 1.4% of GDP. Thirteen years later, in 2008, the deficit had doubled, to just over 3% of GDP. "
No. The deficit did NOT double.
And stop comparing the deficit to GDP. Or the government debt to GDP.
That's comparing your neighbor's debt to your income.
The government CANNOT tax 100% of GDP. If it tries that, nobody would go to work. There would be 100% unemployment.
Comparing government deficits or debt to GDP is just one way of saying that the government has the right to steal every last penny of income. The proper thing is to compare government deficits to government income, and government debt to government assets. NOT our income or our assets. The government does NOT own our stuff (YET)!
In the spirit of that dedication I offer the following from over 230 years ago.
“If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” Sam Adams.
Mr. Flynn,
I couldnt find your email, so I'm writing this to you here as editor and chief. Could you do something to correct the factual mistakes on Chriss Street's blog titled "Nature Journal of Science discredits man-made global warming"? Several comments have asked for the correction. Mr. Street seems to be reading his comments–he responds to the friendly ones. But he refuses to correct the egregious mistake.
This is not part of the global warming debate. it is merely a matter of checking the author list of the article in question. He takes a quotation that has been floating around on the web for at least a year and ascribes it to one of the article's authors. The person who actually said the stale quotation is not an author. The actual authors say something quite different.
I would think that such blatant perversion of facts would be embarrassing for your website. If so, it should be easy to fix.
My email is flynn1776@gmail.com. Send me the specifics and I'll look into it.
