Your Roundup of the RNC Chair Race
by Mike FlynnAt 1pm EST today, Americans for Tax Reform and The Daily Caller will host a debate of all announced candidates for Chair of the RNC. The 168 members of the GOP Committee will vote January 14th to select a Chair for a new two-year term, which, of course, includes the period of redistricting and the critical 2012 election.
The race for RNC Chair won’t get a lot of attention from either the media or, sadly, the grass roots, but it is an important campaign. It seems counter-intuitive, but the national GOP actually underperformed this past November. Yes, they won the House and picked up an historic 60+ seats, but it could-and should-have been 75-80 seats. They left 3-4 Senate seats on the table. Worse, the GOP came up short in Governor’s races, which are critically important with redistricting on the agenda this year. (They lost to Jerry Brown (!), Rod Blagojevich’s Lt. Gov, and a retread who supports socialized medicine, for example.) Don’t get me wrong, it was a great victory, but, watching from the front-lines, it hurts to realize it could have been even greater, but for the disfunction of the national party.
As I have written before, the first job of the RNC Chair is to ‘do no harm.’ Don’t make gaffes on the Sunday shows or in speeches, raise lots of money and execute a robust ground game for election day. In the closing days of the midterms, the RNC pulled out of most of its election-day GOTV operations…because they didn’t have any money…because the current Chair and organization had alienated the grassroots, which cost them lots of donations. (You can see a theme, right?) Who knows how many more races the GOP could have won with a normally functioning party?
But, enough with the past. This isn’t about the RNC we had, but about the RNC we want to have. And that election is in less than two weeks.
So, let’s recap where we are on this race. Because, while most of us were gorging on College Bowl games or ignoring the world because we gorged on things that weren’t College Bowl games, several interesting things happened. So, let’s have a roundup.
Obviously, the first candidate to mention is the current RNC Chair Michael Steele, who, while it does boggle the mind, is running for reelection. Enough said. Google him if you want to understand why he is fighting for his political life.
The ‘frontrunner‘ to succeed him is Reince Priebus–because Augustus Gloop III wasn’t available. Priebus, in addition to being party chair in WI, is the former right-hand man to Steele. He served has the campaign manager for Steele’s run for Chair and then took a staff job as General Counsel at the RNC, which would position him to approve all of Steele’s contracts with outside consultants or friends. Which he did, apparently.
But, it seems worse than that. Super blogger Dan Riehl has documented some other problems with Priebus. Here is his report on Priebus’ possible work securing stimulus funds. (Here is my take on the silly defense offered by Priebus’ supporters.) And here is his report on Priebus supporting government eminent domain against a small business owner. Uber-blogger Jim Hoft noted Priebus’ law firm’s support of ObamaCare. RedState noted Priebus’ too-close ties to Steele here. David Norcross, the former Chair of the New Jersey GOP mustered up a defense of Priebus at National Review Online here. Weak? Yes. Isn’t it great that the RNC has to begin the race for a new Chair with so many defenses of its “frontrunner.” Remember that “do no harm” advice?
Another candidate for RNC Chair is for MO state party chair Ann Wagner. She is a proven fundraiser and former Ambassador to Luxemburg. Jim Hoft announced her candidacy here. The Daily Caller has a profile here, where Wagner worries about the ‘creep of socialism.’
Another candidate is DC GOP operative and Pfizer-drug company-lobbyist Maria Cino. Her latest work for Pfizer was lobbying to enact ObamaCare. Yes, you read that right. And, she wants to be head of the RNC. Enough said. But, you can read nice things about her here.
Another candidate, Gentry Collins, former political director of the RNC just shuttered his campaign. In the days before he ended his campaign, one of his most vocal supporters, CT Chair Chris Healy released a scathing memo on Reince Priebus. You can find it here. Even though Collins is no longer a candidate, it is worth a read. I grew up in Illinois/Chicago politics, so I am a bit jadded, but I’d be shocked if Priebus and Steele haven’t already worked out a deal. I’d bet dollars to donuts that Priebus and Steele already have a deal in place.
The final candidate is former MI Chair Saul Anuzis. A profile of him at The Daily Caller is here. I know from personal experience that Saul is very adept at social media, like Twitter and Facebook.
This under-the-radar race is very important. Again, the RNC Chair should ‘do no harm.’ The current Chair is disqualified. There are a couple candidates who run the risk of continuing the damage to the party and a couple who might actually be able to do something productive. But, only 168 people make the choice…and probably a third of them have a vested financial interest in the outcome.
Today, I was given the full list of all RNC members casting a vote. The list included their home numbers and emails. I’m tempted to publish this list, to deliver a bit of tea-party-wupass on anyone thinking to extend the Steele/Priebus/Cino grip on the party.
I don’t yet have a dog in this fight, but I’m committed to watching it and responding accordingly. We absolutely can’t have a retread of the Steele/Priebus/Cino cabal. If either of them win, we should create a Big PAC, leverage our own energy and resources, and do our own thing. The GOP/RNC has a decision to make.
This is the Internet. Everything has changed.

No "FRIGGIN RINOS" as RNC chair or co-chair. It is time that the Repubs move back to the right if they want our support !
Nice choices…Reince Preibus a Steele lackey, and Maria Cino a big Pharma Obamacare whore…definitely neither of those….
Simple process of elimination leaves Ann Wagner or Saul Anuzis.
Nice job GOP might as wall just plug in Mr. Massachusetts Care himself, Mitt Romney for 2012….
No senorita Cino, she would be horrible.
Pfft!! Why do we care who's driving the hearse?
It's dead, Jim.
It died the day they nominated McCain and it should not be resuscitated.
Remember that one of the communist goals for the US is to infiltrate "one or both of the political parties". We like to think that they only got one……….I don't think so. Look at those candidates! Wish I knew more about the 168 people……a lot more.
I think who they elect will tell us a lot. If they elect a RINO it'll be time to make them a third party.
Which of those mentioned is from the TEA party?
Hey, just like every other race – the candidates are clearly chosen by some interests in order to give us the illusion of choice!
Let's see, of ALL those candidates – do ANY of them put the US above Israel? Or do they use wacky, cultist terms like "Judeo Christian" (a dead giveaway)?
Michael Steele has dropped out of the race and has announced that he will instead seek the Republican nomination for President, read his announcement here… http://beautifulletters-bls.blogspot.com/2010/10/...
Hey everybody, we need to help "dontlooknow" out! Obamacare rationing took away his anti-psychotic meds, now he can't stop himself. We need to get Obamacare repealed so that dontlooknow can get his meds back. So come on everybody, let's repeal Obamacare and get "dontlooknow" the help he so desperately needs.
Draft John Bolton – that is unless he is seriously going to run for President. We need ass-kickers and name-takers, not more of the same old, same old.
The RINO's run this show…. they will only put up more RINO's to run it. They are politically correct in all fascist's of their actions and cater to the main stream media that will "b*tch at them no matter who they put up.
This is a useless, pointless argument.
The RNC needs to quit giving money to RINOS and not meddle in primaries. It made itself irrelevant after the DeDe Scozafava disaster. It is going to have to be conservative and grass roots and quit shooting itself in the foot before I start contributing again. Repeated serial blunders by the RNC, NRSC, etc is why right now i ONLY contribute directly to candidates.
Alfred E. Newman for chairman.
Smeds, do you ever tire of railing against and ranting about juice? It's not even cute anymore. You inject juice into everything on the Bigs. It's gotta get sticky and bitter at some point. It has for most of us, as nobody on the Bigs hates juice except you.
If they elect a RINO, all bets are off….
I will be looking for a third party for 2012….
The RNC are RHINOS. whomever heads that club takes their direction from the likes of Newt, Rove, etc. The
Tea Party has solved that problem by direct support to the candidates as Wildcat above advises and I do as well.
We need to up that support in 2012.
Hey DLN,
How about "I will curse those who Curse thee and I will bless those who bless thee"?
History tends to prove it true.
How do ya like them apples?
Of course I don't expect such words to persuade you but its still fun to point it out since Israel lives in your head for free all the time.
Sarah Palin! unless she's holding back for Pres. She's be a great RNC Chair.
The role of the party chairman is to TEACH the platform and SELL its value to the general public.
We've gotten used to the idea that the chairman is to move the party to the middle of the political spectrum and ignore the platform. That's got to stop.
So, who is filling arenas while extolling the virtues of conservatism?
Sarah Palin.
It's a no-brainer folks. She's not electable, so let's send her out to TEACH, SELL and raise money.
He'd be a great President or Secy of State. He'd kick thier arses!
Don't give a dime to the RNC. Support the candidates directly.
Excellent point. Bypass the kingmakers and support those who meet your standards directly. Less waste and much less chance of the RNC drones mucking things up.
Ahhh you're just sore on account of,….
you weren't voted regional director of your white supremacist chapter.
If Sarah Palin or an extremely close facsimile is not made RNC,………
the Republican Party is flawed and will need to be replaced.
This is my position exactly. I donated to many proven conservatives and wished I could give more. They've got to prove they are not Rinos before I contribute.
All of these RINOs should be party leaders…for the Democrats.
Palin would be an *excellent* choice as chair. While unelectable today as President, she'd draw all kinds of fire from the left and the media, would be a hell of a fundraiser, and would let presidential candidates build their base in her media shadow while she took all the heat.
And that will be the final nail in our coffin. Divide and conquer will have been achieved.
We just want to be represented. We just want the truth. We just want people to adhere to the Constitution which this country was founded on. We just want a President who loves his country.
We just want our country back.
During the 2010 elections I advocated the same thing, example: 25 million TEA party members with a $100.00 to donate send $1.00each to 100 different candidates in tough fights. Each candidate would have 25 million in their war chest right off the bat.
Let's clear up any possible misunderstanding….
I don't want a third party, but Spooky Dude does and he's squarely behind the people who are calling for it…
if we start shootin' at 'em …the first one to return fire gets the job…whaaaa???? sarah wins????? okay!
Knew that is what you meant, we have had enough dialogue now my good friend, I can understand exactly what you are saying.
We are falling into their trap and even chewing off our own foot will not release us from the cold steel.
If there is a third party, my advice is that instead of heading to polls you head for the hills…
because it will be the end of things, as we know it…
Our current problem is that not one in the race is worth the powder necessary to pass methane gas. It's another lesser of the two evils choice facing the RNC. Personally, I go for the PAC unless the RNC pulls its head from its rectum..
Two steps ahead. Plan for the worst, hope for the best. Personally, I started planning and preparing nearly a year ago. I do not have any faith in our political system to "save me", therefore I intend to "save myself".
Every now and then, I get a fundraising letter from the RNC. About every third one, I'll find the free time to hand write a three page letter detailing why they get nothing from me, along with supporting docs equal to about 20-30 pages.
I've donated, but to individual candidates, NOT these piggy, fat-ass RiNO's. They will not, ever, in any number of lifetimes, get the message unless their donations and funding dries up. To any that still believe in them who read this, if the last election didn't wake them up, what do you think will?
I'm not certain as to the alternative to the RNC, but the only hope we seem to have against them is to make them irrelevant. Judging by the frontrunners thus far, they are well on their way.
And to Mr. Flynn- PUBLISH THE LIST! Or tell us where to find it.
I plan on going on the hunt of a lifetime….
and I'll be starting with RINOs…..
Ahhhh,
The "ultimate" hunt.
No retread repugnuts(Romney) in 2012. I am sick and tired of second tier rinos. America's choice has to be a real candidate, not some wishy washy rino which is what the conservative base gets if Romney, Huckabee, and Gingridge are out and about. However, if I had to hold my nose and select one of them, I'd take Gingridge over the other two.
I really like Sarah Palin for the job as pres, yet I would rather see her as Sec of the Interior and Bolton as Sec of State. Take a look at Allen West of FL. To me he is an unknown but a winner, IMHO. However, what we really need is a Chris Christie, Marco Rubio, and Allen West all wrapped into a single package. So far I haven't seen or heard of one potential candidate who possesses all those traits. Ergo, I'm shooting for a super majority in both the house and senate. That's 68 conservative senators and 290 house members. Why 68 senators? We still have at least four rinos left in the senate until 2014,16 – Murkowski, Linsey Graham, snowe, and Collins unless we can replace collins and snowe in 2012..
Boy, am I going to get whacked.
They are all old boy establishment club repugnuts.
Not one.
That will never happen. She is too much of a patriot and real American. The special interest groups within the RNC will go bananas.
It's that or crawl in a hole and die….
The choice is easy for me. Anything else would be going against my nature….
Mr. Flynn, you said in this article that "This isn’t about the RNC we had, but about the RNC we want to have."
May we infer from this bold statement that you are a Republican and that this publication is dedicated to strengthening the Republican Party? Why else would you use the term "we" if you do not include yourself among "us"?
Good luck with that. I'm pretty sure George Soros already owns all the 3rd parties.
I tried to get into the military after college, had great scores and promises of a great career. A knee reconstruction prior, eliminated my chances of ever serving………all for the lust of the thrill of victory racing motorcycles. One of my greatest regrets.
In this time of today, makes one realize mortality is a thought not to be overlooked.
I assume that since our support of Israel knots your thong up so badly, then you also feel the same way about when we share & co-build the JSF with England, France, & other nations, right?
Naw, of course not. You'd just rather burn Torahs in the common area of your trailerpark, make meth, & bang your 10 yr old sister, right?
Yes he does….
They're already bought and paid for….
I've long thought that Palin would make a fine RNC Chair. She already rankles the libs like no one else out there, it would improve her bona fides, it would be the best way to utilize her "king/queen maker" abilities, & it would ensure that the national party, as a whole, will go in the conservative direction. It would be the most effective way she could help, in my humble opinion.
Steele OUT! PLEASE…….RINOS be damned! That include my sens. Snow and Collins!
Out damned spot!
When I think of all the close calls, I realize that I'm already way past my expiration date…
I might as well go, doing what I'm very good at…
I hope that's all they are……..but, I'm really wondering about some of them.
The repugnut old boys club mentality is similar to that of the dims. They only care about maintaining the status quo(cushy job and fat paycheck), and that they rule the party. They care less about the "little" people. These are the same folks who behind the scenes pick the winners and losers. Remember the outrage, and angst, even to the gnashing of teeth and vitriol in Delaware when a chronic, lifetime rino was defeated by a TEA party movement candidate in the primary?
What we really need to do is capture the repub party or render it useless. A third party now is not viable unless one of the other two is totally destroyed and rebuilt from the bottom up. Right now the socialist party and the greenies have joined forces with the dims to control the political landscape. Our best chance is for us to take over the repubs.
Ideology, principles, ethics all take a back seat to amassing personal wealth and power. They'll do anything to keep it. Gawd, they must hate the Tea Party!
*yawn*
Why don't you and the other Anti-Semitics get together and do something disturbing and disgusting with each other….??
Maybe a couple pints of methyl alcohol and a do-it yourself home circumcision kit…??
Certainly more entertaining and informative than the ejaculate you do now…
Exactly…
NO MONEY TO THE RNC….!!
Thanks..couldn't say it better myself…
No thanks…Steele has done enough damage…
Exactly…!!!
And the RNC doesn't get a dime of it…
That's the winning play right now…
It will die out as a National Power…to be replaced with a TEA Movement style apparatus…local, Constitutional, and extremely effective…
Central Planning doesn't work…SEE: DIMocRATS…
Donate to those that embody those principles, and you'll make a difference EVERYTIME…
Screw National Control RNC failure…GO PERSONAL…!!
Her name says it all: CINO = Conservative In Name Only
from Clockwise: That was before God damned them. Funny how you fail to mention that.
My answer (FlexoRick)
Don't need to poor boy, Lest you be wise in your own conceits, I want you to understand this mystery,: a hardening has come upon part of Israel, until the full number of the Gentiles come in and so all Israel will be saved; as it is written, "The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob" "and this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins." As regards the gospel they are enemies of God, for your sake; but as regards election they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. Just as you are disobedient to God and yet may receive mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may receive mercy. For God has consigned all men to disobedience, that he may have mercy upon all.
So you see God has not Dammed Israel but hardened them as to their faith so we may share with them the gifts of God. You would do well to drop your hatred of Gods beloved.

Steele wasn't the only reason for poor coordination of GOTV – lack of coherent message was mainly to fault and this came from a fractured leadership from nascent Tea Party lacking organizational capacity. Why the Republicans didn't do better! http://www.d2dcampaign.com/2010/11/why-republican...
Keep it up RNC. If you want the Republicans to become and obsolete party, vote in another RINO. I dare you. I double dog dare you.
