Reince ‘Shovel Ready’ Priebus Is Not Ready for Prime Time
by Mike FlynnI don’t really have a particular dog in the fight for RNC Chair. After twenty years in politics, I think well-run individual campaigns are more important to victory than the machinations of a national party organization. The RNC should mostly just raise lots of money, get out the vote and then…get out of the way. Its really kind of a political Hippocratic oath; first, do no harm…to the party’s brand or its candidates.
Still, I’ve been fascinated by Dan Riehl’s coverage of the race and, specifically, the problems swirling around the frontrunner (!?), Reince Priebus. Priebus is GOP Chair in Wisconsin and, along with about three dozen other state chairs, had a pretty good election cycle this November. (Of course, also along with three dozen other state chairs, he had a pretty disastrous cycle in 2008.) Until very recently, he was also on staff at the RNC, serving as General Counsel after steering Michael Steele into the Chairmanship.
On the side, it seems, he also used his legal skills and government and political contacts to secure federal stimulus money for clients. Redstate thinks there is nothing unusual in this, just another lawyer-helping-his-clients situation. Although, as Dan Riehl points out today, his work went quite a bit further than simply advising clients on the stimulus’ impact. And keep in mind, Priebus was the state GOP Chair at this exact time. At the very least, that obvious conflict sets up some pretty funny juxtapositions.
On March 5, 2009, Priebus co-authored a client alert heralding the awarding of $500 million to Wisconsin and noted:
The $529 million in stimulus funds allocated for Wisconsin state and local transportation projects is likely to result in increased opportunities for Wisconsin road, bridge and other transportation contractors, subcontractors and suppliers.
Of course, a little less than a year later he told this to the Stevens Point Journal:
“The stimulus, the jobs bill, all of them — they all create a very small amount of government jobs, but they cost us our future,” Priebus said. “We get very little in return for the massive amount of money that we’re putting toward these government programs.”
I doubt the media would ever do anything with those two quotes. Doubtless, they will also overlook this quote from a pitch also co-authored by Priebus:
If you are interested in learning about other provisions included in The Act, the Michael Best Stimulus and Economic Recovery Team is prepared to assist you in understanding the implications and in developing and implementing a strategy to secure the benefits of this unprecedented legislation. Specifically, we will assist you to identify opportunities, prepare appropriate proposals and make targeted contacts to secure funds.
Well, isn’t that precious.
Within minutes of this story breaking, Priebus or someone at his law firm, began furiously scrubbing all traces of him from the firm’s stimulus work. (Scrubbing…really? Is this 1999? Does Priebus even know about Google cache or WayBack?) He also said the whole thing was a terrible misunderstanding. One of his supporters explained to National Review:
“Some element of the firm must have put out some marketing thing. They’re a general corporation firm. Somehow that erroneously got hooked up to Reince’s personal thing. But he has never been involved in terms of the group that was trying to do that. He hasn’t and won’t. End of story.”
Priebus himself explained it this way:
I’m co chair of the Government Practice Group, so my guess is that I was simply listed
Tight ship they’re running at the Michael Best law firm.
But, nevermind. Let’s take Priebus at his word. Let’s assume he really wasn’t involved in any of this. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt that his name was mistakenly listed as a co-author on at least 4 stimulus client alerts, that his bio mentioned his work in this area and that he was listed as a point of contact for the overall stimulus practice. Fine, it was all a whole series of multiple mistakes. But, if so, what does that mean?
Well, for starters, it means that for well over a year, neither Priebus nor any of his colleagues noticed that he was mistakenly listed on the firm’s website. Clients received alerts listing him as a co-author. Clients thought he was a point of contact. Remember, he wasn’t some junior associate. He was a leading partner in the firm and the freakin chair of the GOP in the state. That would carry quite a bit of weight, enough, even, to convince a client to use the firm’s services. To assert that he was a prominent player in this practice area when he wasn’t is pretty close to misrepresentation. Did any client sign on with the firm thinking that Priebus, a powerful political operative, was working their case?
Again. No. One. Noticed. This? The law firm doesn’t ask partners listed as a co-author of an alert to review it? None of the other partners ever said, “Whoa, you’ve got Priebus listed here…that’s a mistake, I’m the one handling this”? Neither Priebus nor any of the other partners working on the stimulus front ever bothered to look at the firm’s website? (That could explain why Priebus thinks you can “scrub” a website.)
Besides the Apple-Dumpling-Gang humor in all this, there is something more troubling here and it is highly relevant to the RNC race. A while back, Priebus resigned his staff position at the RNC to prepare for this campaign. He has been working at this for at least a couple months. And yet, he didn’t notice this glaring mistake until it came out in the press.
I always advise candidates running for office to first research themselves. Find out what information is out there about them, what is wrong and what could be damaging. Only then do you research your opponents. You always want to minimize surprises in a campaign. Know what you are dealing with.
Priebus not only doesn’t seem to have done a thorough job of this campaign basic, it doesn’t appear that he did it at all. I mean, the man didn’t even look at his own bio before he threw his hat into the ring for national political office? Really? This is the kind of operative who is the “frontrunner” to be chair of the RNC? I know the GOP is often jokingly called the “stupid” party, but in this case, that would be really unfair to stupid people.
Remember, the chief duty of the RNC chair is to “do no harm” to the party or its candidates. One of the more unfortunate aspects of Steele’s tenure is that he too often became the story. His misstatements, gaffes and mistakes often dominated news coverage of the party. Whole news cycles were wasted trying to explain away his actions. Does the RNC really want to go through that all over again?
Priebus has already been featured on MSNBC saying repeatedly that the US should execute Obama, when he meant to say Osama. Now we learn that for well over a year, according to him, his law firm has been publicly crediting him for work he never did. Learning of this mistake, he then tried to cover his tracks by scrubbing the website.
The harm has already been done.

Wow, that's pretty damning stuff. How is this guy even being considered?
"(That could explain why Priebus thinks you can “scrub” a website.)"
The GOP has NEVER learned the lesson of Tricky-Dick Nixon.
The cover-up is always worse than the crime. (Well, unless you're a democrat, that is)
"Priebus has already been featured on MSNBC saying repeatedly that the US should execute Obama, when he meant to say Osama."
Oh, c'mon. Let's cut him some slack on this one, especially because of the similarity between "Osama" and "Obama."
And I'm not talking about the spelling.
Well played, bro!
Reince Priebus is shovel ready.
He dug his own hole.
Resume' enhancement, and fabricated embellishment are called "lying" where I come from. To civilized, educated folk, that is the modus operandi. The problem is, they get to believing their own fabricated press. Call it what you will, it is still a lie, and the RNC does not need a liar leading the parade.
They need someone of honor.
Coffee-spitting ALERT!!! LMAO. Tight ship. Apple-Dumpling-Gang. "Stupid Party"
Editor In Chief muscles the story from Riehl to smack these softballs over center field?
Who has been the major underwriter for Wisconsin transportation projects? Get your shovel ready.
I've read some pap before, but this takes the cake. The only one with a shovel is Mike Flynn, as he spoon feeds the no nothings heaping piles of crap.
Honestly, Mike, Reince Priebus was the man behind delivering the country's most overwhelming shift from far left to the conservative right. He worked directly with the Tea Party — candidates like Sean Duffy, Ron Johnson, and Scott Walker. These guys are RINOs? Liberals?
Might want to check what you've got in Santa's Corn Cob pipe, Mike — you're giving the elves a contact buzz.
i love it: this column is great not just for the subject matter but for the fact that its author walked his readers through a logical sequence using knowledge of human beings and their nature.
it displays something which is in short quantity these days – Rigor.
if i were to run for office (advocating, of course, free stuff to a lot of people but mostly my friends and family), i would certainly consult Mr. Flynn.
great job.
Somehow, I get the distinct impression, that all of the fruitcakes are going to show up, just in time for Christmas.
Anyone who thinks the GOP deserves our support, our organization, our money and our votes should read this article. The Tea Party Caucus should read it out loud, line by line so they get the point. The GOP BRANDING is the only change we are seeing and it is the same BRANDING of failed messages that the Democrats routinely use. I bet Angelo Codevilla would have something interesting to say here. I need to go throw up.
notice how demiurge addresses none monsieur flynn's points? maybe odemiurge is priebus' mother in which case she should be excused. mothers have a right to love their children.
How's that go again? Oh yes, follow the money. Who collected the greatrest amount in fees for dispersing this stimulus within the state?
Maybe not.
I'm a Wisconsinite who worked his ass off to throw out Russ Feingold, Jim Doyle and all of the other lefty scum that were polluting the political waters here in Wisconsin and around the state. From where I'm sitting, its abundantly apparent the actions of my fellow conservatives here in Wisconsin did a far better job than any those in any other state and Reince Priebus made it easy for us all. The organization was phenomenal.
Is there a reason Mike could only write a hit piece rather than focus on what Reince Priebus did as the head of the RNC in Wisconsin — working with the Tea Party, rather than treating them as some kook group, working with the most conservative candidates running for office in Wisconsin and making sure they had the full backing of the state GOP?
You know, those things that would make him a qualified and capable RNC Chair at the national level? Who is Mike in the tank for? Why isn't he singing the praises of the candidate he's most supportive of rather than tearing down someone who did a remarkable job for conservatives in Wisconsin and the country?
All I care about is making sure the next RNC chair is going to be aggressive in promoting conservative candidates. Reince Priebus would fit that bill and he isn't the only one.
Nicely done, sir!
so……would you care to address, dismantle and de-construct flynn's specific points or would you prefer to merely bluster about your friend?
Troll alert. Someone is trashing everyone's postings.
Are you intentionally thick headed or do you really not get this? What matters is what Reince Priebus has actually done. I stated it, yet you don't seem to have a response for that. All you and Mike Flynn seem to be able to focus on is what was said on the website of a law firm that he works for. That's pathetic.
Tell me, were you one of the clowns that was mesmerized by the soaring rhetoric of Barack Obama in 2008?
This column will be hilarious when we find out who Mike Flynn is in the bag for, if he even has the guts to tell us.
With all due respect, I am a pretty open-minded type of feller. I cast a jaundiced and cynical eye on everyone, and everything. I believe in the maxim trust, but verify.
When Dan Riel wrote his first article on this topic, on Wednesday evening, an excerpt of my original comment was:
"I thank the author for this expose'.
I particularly thank him, for the update at the bottom pertaining to "scrubbing" his information. That in and of itself is the second red flag."
The first red flag? Nobody picked up on it. Reince Preibus is an attorney. Attorney's tend to lie. Personally, I don't care how hard he worked for you all in Wisconsin, nor do I care what a stellar job he has done. If he has done such a great job, you all would be better suited to keep him. He might be fine on a local level, but he apparently is not ready for the National Stage. I could proffer the same arguments against him, that have been thrown out regarding Sarah Palin.
The fact they scrubbed the erroneous information, reeks of impropriety. Something the RNC does not need at this moment, especially after just getting rid of the doofus Michael Steele.
Dan Riehl's articles, and Mike Flynn's for that matter have always been factual. That is more than I can say for Mr. Priebus's bio, or his law firm.
i don't know that it's possible for someone to be "intentionally thick-headed." in fact, i don't suppose that anyone intentionally owns any character flaws or physical defects. in our hearts, we all suppose that we are fair, kind, good-looking and just.
however, i am a bit taken aback by the ferocity of your comments. i would almost suspect that you are some sort of….gulp….troller? there are many lurking about on these boards lately. you have begun here by grinding an axe. dead give away.
plus the fact that you created your name & account this morning.
plus the fact that you've addressed none of flynn's points and really, kind of pretty much mangled the points you claim you are making.
remember, demiurge, yelling and calling people names won't win you any friends.
The GOP is on probation…Period.
If they screw up this time, then they can expect a third party, and extinction!
Support Tea Parties America

is that the sound of a door closing?
oh well, perhaps demiurge has left the building. it's just as well. i have to make a living.
but i will miss him or her. for a few brief moments, demiurge brought rays of irrationality and silliness into my otherwise dreary world. farewell brave wisconsinite (if that is really where you are from), i shall miss your anger and babble.
Once the "stimulus ball" was rolling it didn't make sense for conservatives to let all the contracts and $$$ go to liberal enterprises. The guy didn't lobby or vote for it as a legislative member so I don't see what the big problem is. He did what a lot of conservatives have done the past few years, he held his nose and put his hand in the game. His firm puts food on the table and a roof over the head of a lot of families. Eating from the trough to survive when times are tough is not the same thing as making sure the trough is continually replenished at the expense of others.
Your lucky day has arrived—-This is a bit off topic but referring to fruitcakes—-I just recieved a package and I was shocked by the contents—Someone mailed me (get this) an Inflatable fruitcake! Merry Christmas to you!
Reince Priebus sounds like a P.G. Wodehouse character.
This guy supposedly is the choice of the ruling elite in the party. 'Nuff said.
This is why they want this clown,.
it is their last ditch effort to hold on to the party.
The Tea Party needs to get a handle on the RNC, they are part of the problem also. They are the ones that threw a Palin under the bus, in the McCain/Palin run for POTUS. If they don't like the platform your running on they will make the game play against its own candidates. They also need to be watched
Absolutely…very, very closely…
Palin is a case in point…she's not very well liked by the Alaskan Republican party…who in a lot of ways, are at least as bad as a lot of DIMocRATS…and would like to bag her just like she bagged that caribou…
The RNC should be disbanded completely. I can't think of a single thing it does that it does that is important. necessary, or worth while.
You should remember this –
IT IS FAR BETTER TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT AND APPEAR STUPID THAN TO OPEN IT AND REMOVE ALL DOUBT.
I have no doubt!
I read all your posts and I have a statement for you if you have the ability to remember it –
IT IS FAR BETTER TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT AND APPEAR STUPID THAN TO OPEN IT AND REMOVE ALL DOUBT.
All doubt is now gone!
This is a note to all of you paying attention and that have brain cells still working – anytime someone begins a column with the statement – "I don't really have a particular dog in the fight for chairman of the RNC" – and then proceeds to do a hit piece on the law firm that employees the most qualified candidate (not the candidate and his record as Chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party) DOES REALLY HAVE A PARTICULAR DOG IN THE FIGHT!
Wisconsin, under the Chairmanship of Reince Priebus, had the most spectacular shift from liberal/socialist democrat to Conservative Republican of any state in the union. We now have a Tea Party Governor, a Tea Party Senator, and Tea Party Representatives, so I would say to Mr. Flynn and Mr. Riehl – if your candidate can match or surpass the record of Mr. Reince Priebus, advertise it – if not – shut up with your SHOVEL READY hit pieces! Remember this –
IT IS FAR BETTER TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT AND APPEAR STUPID THAN TO OPEN IT AND REMOVE ALL DOUBT.
heavens, demiurge? is that you?
why are you so angry, my child?
please, your life will only be more difficult if you don't let go of your rage.
just breathe, little one, and get ready for the start of the january semester in the 4th grade.
hugs & kisses to you and yours!
