Hide the Job Decline: $500k in Stimulus Funds to ClimateGate Professor
by Mike FlynnThe American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (the Stimulus Bill) has been such an epic failure, that even the mainstream media has started to notice. The White House has tacitly acknowledged this and recently announced that it would no longer ‘count’ jobs ‘created or saved’ by the Stimulus. The basic problem is that the bulk of the spending went to programs or projects that have nothing to do with economic growth.
The latest example of this is a $500,000 grant to Michael Mann, Professor at Penn State University and unintended c0-star of the ClimateGate e-mail scandal. The leaked e-mails revealed collaboration among scientists to stifle dissenting views on the extent of man-made global warming.
Mann is also the creator of the “Hockey Stick” graph, which purported to show a sharp increase in recent temperatures. That work has been thoroughly discredited by researcher Stephen McIntyre. Yet, in June 2009, the National Science Foundation awarded Mann a three-year $500,000 to further study the climate’s response to human activity. According to the grant award:
The broader impacts involve supporting postdoctoral scholars and graduate students and contributing to the understanding of abrupt climate change.
So, the research is supposed to give us a better ‘understanding of abrupt climate change.’ Mind you, the research isn’t to determine whether there is abrupt climate change occurring. Given that Mann is known for using “tricks” to finesse his data, the National Science Foundation will not be pleased with the results.
Actually, this particular grant is special, even by the low-bar set by other spending. Most of the Stimulus funds are simply wasted with no real impact on the overall economy. However, Mann’s “research” will presumably be used to further justify cap-and-trade legislation or other draconian regulatory actions. Either of these will have a very negative impact on the economy, retarding growth for years to come.
We may be paying for this $500,000 for a very long time.

He completely deleted from the science record the Medieval warming period similar to today whcih wouls have dramatically changed his "hockey stick" graph. He tried to suspend peer review and tried to remove from science journals skeptics of man made GW.
The elitist MSM or socialist satellite broadcasters are too dumb to deal with science issues in a non-political manner unlike the majority of America's truckers, plumbers, small business owners or basically most of us so the whole scandal is off of their radar by design and incompetence.

I just read MichaelCricton's fiction book called "State of Fear". He wrote it in 2004 and the book lambasted the global warming zealots. I can prove statistically that the stimulus worked. The USA got stimulus and has 10-11 percent unemployment. Haiti, on the other hand, didn't get the stimulus. Look at all the people out of work there. I am working on a real good graph about this.

Agreed re: Mann. What will be interesting to see is what it takes to the get the large number of scientists, journalists, and politicians to back off AGW. They have invested their reputations in claiming "the debate is over" – how do you backpeddle gracefully off that?.
AGW was too convenient a scam for any of them to pass up. The scientists got grants (in a wide range of sciences) and prestige, the lefty journalists got to bash capitalism and tell us the end of the world was upon us, and it's a politician's wetdream – huge power and money grabs.
I personally don't think they will ever give up the jig, they may get less pushy as AGW and its high priests are further discredited. The public has wised up thank god, with most knowing it's utter bs, save a few hippies.

Now you can fool some of the people some of the time… But these levels of glory don't take well to fraud. Mann is toast. And legally liable for the space he took up at Penn State while he lied. He's seen his las 500k. That came just before everyone found out he lied.
And BTW, about Penn State. Used to be a couple cabins in the woods. Way out in nowhwereville. They've worked really hard to change that and have developed a stellar reputation. Michael Mann -and others like him- are simply pathetic and apparently not scientists at all. But while we all complain we don't seem to have the method to stop people like him or even put the brakes on our out of control, inept pres. and congress. But there are others ways the common person might have an impact. One would be to urge everyone you know that has kids getting ready to start college to avoid Penn State as that is Mann's employer. Avoiding wouldn't be enough however, the university would need to be told why. Baby steps, but maybe if the school sees potential entrants going somewhere else due to their employ of people like Mann, they might wake up.
Mann has been bilking the system for a number of years. He knew his source code was "baised" when he wrote the "hockey stick" program. He knew his work was flawed when he obstructed efforts by other scientists to obtain the source code and his data. He knew his work was flawed but allowed the IPCC to use the graph in its publications since 2001. He knew that millions of American students were presented with this in science textbooks thorughout the US. When McIntyre and McKitrick disproved the "hockey stick" in 2003 and the IPCC dropped its use, Mann was silent but still soliciting for grant money. Mann knew his work was no misinterpretation of data. I'm surprised he's still allowed to not only recieve grant money but the university and department colleagues allowed him to still teach and be employed there. This guy perpetuated a fraud, lied on his grant proposal(s), and should be brought up on charges for soliciting. That raises the question of who at NSF was in on this as well. Maybe a broader sweep will catch even more cockroaches.

In addition to $7 million for free broadband for poor LA folks, Obama just awarded $100 M to LA to buy and rehab abandoned homes. Apparently subprime loans and government takeover of the loan industry were not enough–now they will just give the potential Democrat a house.

From the grant award: "…contributing to the understanding of abrupt climate change." Mann is a geologist and there are many examples of abrupt climate change in earth's history. I don't think it's fair to say that this applies to our current climate but that it is referring to abrupt changes in the geologic past. I don't defend him nor his hockey stick travesty but there's no reason to ding the grant for this language. As a geologist myself I don't see anything here that implies the grant is for current climate versus climate records derived from the geologic record.

Here is what I think will come of the climategate investigation. Deniers will never be convinced and it will have no effect on the science… so we will be right back to where we started. That is what I mean when I say nothing will come of it.
As for the political policy question, mitigation legislation will have to wait a few months until the economy turns around. And everyday we will keep pumping more and more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere until even the deniers know we are all screwed. And here is the easiest prediction I will ever make: they will never admit they were wrong. Remember, you heard it here first.

Again that's where you are taking the CO2 religion as science fact when the very experts your side of the debate depends on are changing their position while Roger Pielke Sr and a host of others who strongly disagree with not only the conclusion's of Jones, Mann, Schmitt and Briffa but their "scientific method". I'll surprise you with this, there is significant "climate change" being affected directly be humanity and it indeed is serious but its not as you believe it to be. Not even close.
If all you are reading is Real Climate or NatGeo, then that's all you'll know. Try both sides as I have with an open mind and discount nothing based upon the media outlets on either side. The glass teat is food for the foolish and never more so than now.
I've blogged with deniers until I'm blue in the face and I do expose myself to the denier arguments… notice that I'm here in a right wing blog and not hanging out at Huffington Post or some other place were there is agreement that anthropogenic global warming is happening all around us.
The problem for deniers is they do no science. Most don't even know the difference between a scientific theory which is supported by evidence and makes predictions, from their on opinions that they label as theories. The scientific consensus for AGW exists not because everyone agrees, but because the vast majority involve in the process agree. A consensus is a general agreement and not unanimous consent.
Faith is the available option when woefully shy of fact. I myself would call anyone who believes we know the driving mechanisms of our planet as any sort of absolute "a denier". Any scientist unwilling to allow his "findings" to be checked by an unassociated or affiliated agent "a denier". Any person unwilling to read the literature/case against his or her chosen position "a denier". Anyone whose faith in the science as being settled allowing no room for new data or to put it bluntly, those who see science as being both finite and static "a denier".
Every day the "consensus" is being challenged without rebuttal by those who are very much the peers of Jones, Mann and Schmitt. Every day methods are having their flaws exposed. Every day models are proving themselves flawed to the point of ELOC's the data industry would find not only unacceptable but unworthy of "alpha" release. Every day more of those who make up the "consensus" are being outed as not being themselves scientists but "staff members". Every day answers to questions of raw data and scientific method are answered with not fact but verbiage glutted with religious fervor by defenders of "the faith".
Yet acceptance of CO2 as THE driving force in the mechanism of "Global Warming" was to be accepted because in the end it too lauds humanity as having the ability to affect change upon the environment which IS the only point agreed to? Seriously?
No, faith is never an available option when dealing with the physical world. You either have evidence or you don't know. Now you can deny the evidence, but that doesn't make it go away.
You have to separate the science from the political. Deniers are not looking for access to rejected data to reevaluate the data. They are looking for more blogging points. The goal is to prevent public policy, not to advance the science.
You are wrong. The deniers are driven by bloggers, supporters accept the consensus… and the consensus is that it is happening and we are causing it. But you and I don't get to vote on the science. We only get to vote on policy.

There is nothing "burgeoning" about climategate. A bunch of hackers tried to upload 1000 emails onto the Real Climate website and were stopped. Six or eight of them have made it into the public consciousness because of odd language and it is being investigated. In the in Dr. Jones and his staff will be vindicated (at least by the science community) and we will move on. This is not some conspiracy with new evidence arriving daily.
We absolutely have a process for weeding out bad science and it works remarkably well. It is the scientific method and scientific peer review.

Try a reread. Your "consensus" is NOT that CO2 is even "a" (singular: meaning one) driving force in global or local climate. There is however a consensus that humanity can and does affect local climates which in turn can then affect a greater portion of an area but that too has been shown to be other than your idol CO2. There is currently more work showing CO2 as being a "result of" heating cooling than a "cause of" such. Faith has bugger all to do with anything save for this new CO2 religion.
Point of fact those trying to make points on CO2 are even now shifting to "ocean acidification" specifically because the pews are emptying and the casual members of the congregation are no longer buying into "CO2 is the devil".

Ocean acidification is not something that has just been discovered. The oceans are a natural heat sink and they absorb a significant amount of the CO2 produced by producing fossil fuels. It has a measurable affect on ph. But they also gas it off as temperature increases and that is one of the dangers of global warming.
