Pro-Free Market Parties Romp to Victory in Germany
by Mike FlynnGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel won a resounding reelection in today’s balloting in Germany. That was mostly expected. What wasn’t expected was the absolute drubbing suffered by SPD, the labor/left party. Until this election, Merkel’s conservatives were in an uneasy, ‘grand coalition’ with the SPD. Those days are over. Now Merkel’s conservatives will form a government with the pro-free market (libertarian) FPD party. Hmmm…hints of things to come?:
Together with the FDP, Mrs Merkel is expected to push for a new era of deeper economic reforms and tax cuts for Europe’s biggest economy. Mrs Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the FDP benefited from dissatisfaction over spiralling national debt and stagnant income levels.
The CDU retained its position as Germany’s largest party with 33.5 per cent and the Free Democrats jumped to 15 per cent.
The result marked a humiliating blow for Germany’s venerable Social Democratic Party, which took just 22.5 per cent.
Predictions of a tight outcome were confounded by frustrated voters embracing Mrs Merkel’s case for a stronger hand to deal with Germany’s long-term financial problems.
Read the whole thing here, in a non-US newspaper.
Chancellor Merkel’s party support actually dropped slightly from the last election. However, the FDP, the pro-market, libertarianish party almost doubled their support. And, the labor/left collapsed. Totally.
More of that please.

well lets hope that happens here in 2010 and 2012 theres a country who realizes socailist dont work
Wierd, Every time Euprope goes right, Americans have just gone left. Maybe we can get lucky and the pendulum will swing in favor of common sense SMALL government in teh next round, But the Republicans have been spending money like drunken sailors anyway, they need to start acting like fiscal conservatives if they want to regain power.

It's strange how Europe seems to be leaning more and more to the right these days while the US is trying to make a hard left turn. Since the European Union nanny-state came to be, people there are waking up to what the Left is all about; less freedom and more government control of their lives. The pendulum in Europe is starting to head back to the right..
The pendulum here is swinging here as well but much more quickly. With the Left over-reaching to implement as much as they can as soon as they can, the populous is rebelling. The pendulum looks like it will be pushed back to the right after the forceful push to the left it received after the last Presidential election.
2010 will be the year that determines the fate of the US. If the Left wins 2010, this country will change forever as they will perceive that they have the mandate to head left without restriction (and they will). If the Right wins, much of this Leftist nonsense will come to an end.
I agree. We won't be hearing about this here. Germany's lefty press waged war and lost. Conservatism , lower-taxes, and a pro-business party smacked the socialists to the ground. Nuke plants will be up and running. 2010 & 2012 is when we bring on the smack down.
Such good news for the German people. They have seen first hand the economic ravages that result with socialist policies and they said NO MORE ! They have witnessed their global economic base denigrate and had the gumption to reverse it politically.
Hoping our citizens see the sagacity and benefit of such aCTIONS.
Site administrator…. My last comment was thoughtful and complimentary toward the GERMAN people. If you are going to limit speech and cull comments at least be man enough to support your position openly without hiding behind some OZ curtain. Either boot me off or allow free speech.
This is a continuance of the European Parliamentary elections where the socialists met with horrible defeats across the European continent. That's great, but this one is at a national level. Expect more of this when the UK goes to the polls in a few months.
European right is not the same as American right.
The new German government will still be positioned a healthy margin left of “socialist” Obama.
Things are getting a bit strange, eh? Makes one wonder who is limiting speech at times.
Even the Germans believe in free markets.
Oddly enough, there was a comment on Good Morning America this morning where they were commenting on Roman Pulanski being arrested in Zurich ( I am not commenting on him). The comment made by France was:" A strange new America has just shown its face……"
A strange new America indeed, when Germany and France are becoming bastions of Economic and Social reform, to the right………………
Frankly it's amazing tthat they allow my CRTICISM of them….yet they wont post my very supportive remarks about Germany. BTW…. Thanks for your comments about the "feel" of the country toward the 2010 md-terms. I, too, am extensively traveled and a corporate owner. They do not understand what is coming their way…. All one has to do is read about the Merkel success. Going to be fun….seeing all those Congressional heads rolling down K street.

Socialists! FREEDOM is stronger than YOU!.
That brings a funny scene to mind. Back in the day, the South Korean Marines stationed in Vietnam, used to come back from patrol and play skull soccer to unwind. They were a rough bunch; used to use severed skulls for soccer balls.
Poland is perturbed.
Germany has gone right.
France is tweaking US.
Italy just chimed in………..

Right on. The republicans need to actually show they are fiscal conservatives, rather than just talk. We really need to stay on these guys and hold them accountable, and get the Progressive Republicans and Democrats out of office.
In regard to the topic here about Free Markets, I see that Mr. Obama is headed to Copenhagen, Denmark to pitch Chicago to the Olympic Committee.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090928/ap_on_go_pr_w...
I have a question, during this time of the Greatest Recession since the last Greatest recession, why do the Obamas not ride on the same plane? Why do they have to take seperate transcontinental flights? Why does the American taxpayer have to pay for two Obamas to take two seperate plane rides to the same place, to do the same thing?
Quite frankly, I find their grandiose extravagance simply repulsive.
Apparently, the Obamas are going to spread their "hopey changey thingey" to Denmark:
""President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama symbolize the hope, opportunity and inspiration that makes Chicago great………."
I never accepted the theory that America was culturally and politically behind "enlightened" Europe. I still don't. However, I do believe that, due to it's unique historical extremes, Europe sees the inherent flaws of socialism a little clearer than some in the U.S. Perhaps it is due to their previous experiences, as noted earlier. That brings up an old addage I heard as a young man: "Learn from other people's mistakes. You don't have time to make them all yourself. Why does it seem that our current leaders are determined to repeat Europe's mistakes of the past, when they are so obviously flawed?
Well, if they pull it off and Chicago by some weird measure wins the bid, don't be surprised when Chicago, or any of it's suburbs suddenly has more mansions per square mile than Beverly Hills or the OC.

Let's see if I savvy this; Washington bails out Wall Street, and Wall Street pays back the Senate. Is that right?
They'll all be "Movin' on up, to the Eastside, to a dee-lux apartment in the sky……"
With the Obama worship being sprea in our schools, we better hope that the people wake up soon or 2010 will be meamingless. The "transformational takeover" is in full gear, maybe overdrive.
Transformational Propoganda…. Reminicent of 1930's Germany…. WAKE UP !

[...] The Turning Tide Good news…maybe an indication of what will happen here too German Chancellor Angela Merkel won a resounding reelection [...]
Here, Here! Let us not make the mistake of a third party. Free market pricipled peoples unite!
Don't get too excited, kids: "Conservative" in Europe ain't all that conservative. On the US scale Merkel would be someplace close to Max Baucus.
However, she still beats all hell out of the pinko SDP alternative. And I note that the two major economies which are out of recession, Germany and France, are the two which refused to take the neo-Keynesian stimul-palooza route Obama was urging on them.
The new arrangement of CDU/CSU/FDP will turn Germany around in economical terms, cut in paperwork, extremely business friendly, and light on social. The FDP wants tax cuts for all business owners, tax cuts for workers, a flexible work force instead of the lifetime hiring and does not like Russia. Russia has complained no SPD but they failed to state that the former Chancellor Schoreder of the SPD works for GasProm in Russia after he approve a 5 billion Euro pipeline to be paid for by Germany. The Russians also dislike Merkel because she knows how to deal with them. This is actually a move to the center/right.
No idea why your original comment went to a "pending approval" folder. Tried to fix it. Should pop up soon. Sorry for any confusion or hassle. Flynn
Good omen! It's taking Europe a long time to come to terms w/the fact that social ism is a bad route. Go go go – democracy in action!
It's also strange how the media in Europe was caught totally by surprise. Everything I had seen predicted tight races throughout Germany but we now see how off the mark that prediction was.
I guess the media doesn't know what it's doing anywhere in the world.
Rush, I think the journos wrote what they hoped would happen, rather than honestly reporting what people were saying. Sound familiar? ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC take note.
If you think ACORN is corrupt, what 'til you see the Daley Crime family at work grifting the IOC.
Yes. They run it truly like a Mafioso crime syndicate. Tony Soprano would be proud.
I wonder if Senator Roland Burris is trekking to Copenhagen with "The Obama". Roland might be the bag man………..
So should Europe be a model for us?
Wunderbar!!
If I believed in Mike Flynn's assessment of this old&new leader, I'd rejoice with him. I am a German citizen, and a conservative. This Angela Merkel is not a conservative, and she has done everything in her power to make her party center-left with a bit of conservative rhetoric, too skimpy to cover it up. There is no genuine conservative party in the German parliament. Merkel was quite compliant under the old East German regime. Her party scored the weakest result in history. She wins this `conservative' majority because the
centrist , mixed liberal/libertarian, free democrats made up for the losses, by collecting protest votes against
the grand coalition, as did other smaller parties (namely the leftists, and the ecologists) that were in the opposition.
This outcome is only one omen: that the deception as if we had had a choice in this election goes on unabated.
Sound familiar?
Hey Everyone,
Seems Mr. Tim Geitner was instrumental in destroying other economies before he started in on ours. No wonder Mr. Obama picked him for the job. Check this out.
