Build-A-Climate-Scare: Why You Should Boycott Build-A-Bear

This missive is directed at the guardians of, and donors to, tiny humans. If you fall into that category you likely are already familiar with Build-A-Bear, a world-wide corporation that provides the most innocent of services. They sell customizable stuffed animals. Make your own bear, dog…penguin. Cute concept.
So cute, in fact, that the Build-A-Bear empire sweeps across nearly every state and into 17 other countries. You’ll find their outlets in shopping malls everywhere and even some ballparks. The company also has a website called Build-A-Bearville.com where children can play an interactive video game that, on it’s surface, is unlikely to raise suspicion or sound alarms.
But when your unsuspecting tot logs on and hops a virtual train to the North Pole…you should know that he or she will be informed — by Santa Claus — that Christmas may be canceled this year due to Global Warming. Below is part two of the 3-part video.
Here’s an excpert (1:07-2:22):
Girl Elf: Santa, it’s gone!
Papa Elf: It’s gone, It’s gone!
Santa: What’s gone?
Girl Elf: Tell ‘em, Dad!
Papa Elf: The North Peak.
Santa: A mountain? A mountain’s gone? How is that possible?
Ella the polar bear: Santa, sir, that’s why I’m here. That’s why we’re here. The ice is melting!
Santa: Yes, my dear, we know, the climate is changing. There’s bound to be a little melting.
Ella: It’s worse than that, Santa, a lot worse! At the rate it’s melting, the North Pole will be gone by Christmas!”
Santa: My, my…all of this gone by next Christmas? I don’t think so.
Ella: No sir, not next Christmas, this Christmas! The day after tomorrow!
And this is merely the tip of the dialogue iceberg, if you’ll forgive me for putting it that way. You can view parts one and three here and here. Children of the world can look forward to priceless exchanges such as, “Oh my! Where will the polar bears live?” and my personal fave: “Where will the elves live?”
I suspect you’d like to think it can’t get any worse than that. Thus, it pains me to tell you that animated characters actually break into a discussion of satellite photos and that Mrs. Claus conducts a rather unscientific experiment involving ice cubes.
Needless-to-say, this constitutes brainwashing on the sleaziest and most sinister level. The good news is that this nonsense isn’t coming from our government this time and the rocky economy is our friend here. People, we have the means, if we have the will, to topple these charlatans who shamelessly prey on little children. So boycott Build-A-Bear. And, more importantly, tell the world why.
Go tell it on the mountain, and hurry, before it melts.

Every year we take the kids to Build-A-Bear, but we have now gone for the last time. I get enough indoctrination from the main stream media, and now I need to worry about what politrical messges Build-A-Bear feels a need to pass on to my gandchidren? I don't think so. They just made sure that we will now switch to a store that sells toys that don't come with political indoctrination. Build-A-Bear, you just lost an entire family and generation of good customers.

Our goal with the online webisodes was to show children, through two animated polar bears and a penguin, how they could also make a difference in big and small ways. The animated story occurs in the North Pole where the 2 polar bear characters live and they want to help keep the ice from melting so Santa and the reindeers can take off safely in time to deliver all their gifts. Thanks to the giant ice cubes created by the bear and penguin team they replace the melting ice and all is well so Santa and the reindeers do not miss a beat.
We had no other intentions with the story whatsoever. we do hear you and will certainly take your opinion into consideration when developing future stories. It is interested customers like yourselves that help us do a better job.

Appalling. These people are sick twisted parasites. Hopefully with the newfound involvement and awareness taking place throughout the country more attention will be focused on child brainwashing that is ever more prevelent. These progressives know no limits – all is fair to achieve their goals.

Shades of the 60's, which have wrought the leaders of today. The seeds of today's radicalism were planted in the hippie cultures at Berkeley and other campuses. Their graduates went forth and have spread the gospel through schools and governments. Now the little kiddies are getting a 21st century version of why the USA is the evil empire. I play an online game called Runescape. On one of the quests you have to stop this evil guys factory from poluting the atmosphere. It is also melting Ice Mountain. the only way to save Runescape is to build a windmill on the roof. I switched over to playing facebook games for a while now.
I dont go to Build-A-Bear but I will stop by the one in my mall and let them know i will encourage others not to go there. Nicely of course. Its not the workers fault.

This is what happens when corporations try to get socially conscious. Equally stupid things happen when corporations try to act "hip". This reminds me a bit of the reaction the CEO of Whole Foods got when he came out against socialized medicine. Boycotts.

Build-A-Bear should stick to making bears and let the Adults determine whether global warming is real or not. If they want to find a cause, then perhaps donating to the Red Cross, or Breast Cancer Research would be a better option.

Some people ask "why would you boycott Build-A-Bear?" Well it is like a few years ago, all the stores were becoming politically correct and not wishing people Merry Christmas or having any references to Christmas in thier signage. Well one of those stores was Sears. I now work at Sears and it now encourages it's employees to say Merry Christmas. Every entrance has prominant displays saying Merry Christmas. Boycotting works on companies. Just look at Wallmart now "going Green" because of all the pressure put on them by the Global Warming proponnents. It doesnt work with the mass media as well because there are less alternantives to turn to. but it even works a little there, Fox news has forced the other news stations to at least look like they are throwing conservatives a bone. It's better than it was.

We have a build a bear hear in Abilene at the mall. It's pretty fun and the kids love them. I like to let the kids take their new bears to Clairs Boutique and dress them up with jewelry.
Children being born is a potential consequence of having sex. That is reality and nothing can be done to alter that fact short of not having sex. What a Shame – Since Build a Bear was started here in the St. Louis area – my granddaughter has received two or three a year – we got them from the zoo and fromthe stores – I guess she will never get another one. How do I explain to my granddaughter – that someone's polictic stupidness is stopping me from buying these bears – Hey Build a Bear – lets see your stock go down….

I don't think the company is intentionally trying to warp kids minds, although I do beleive this is a classic example of teaching children what the grown up wants for the child and not what the child wants. The GW and polar bear similarities are no coincidence but again, I do think this is also a company that truely cares about children.
Its a good idea to try and teach kids to "help" but in all honestly I do not think its appropriate. Children need to make a decision to help on their own when they become adults and are mature enough to make that decision.
I beleive a child should simply be a child and enjoy that time in their lives, trying to scare them or convert them to anyone other than the parents point of view, though with good intentions, is morally questionable.

What happens when your vote means nothing because the whole thing got rigged with gerrymandering or other fraudulent behavior such that the same people keep getting in over and over again despite the opposition? For an instant I thought that Emma bear was going to do what a polar bear ought, namely eat the penguin. But that would have been too realistic, of course. I think someone should get them on false advertisement as it claims to be "uplifting" at the beginning. And in the 3rd segment Mrs. Santa appears to remove a glass of unfrozen water with ice cubes in it from the freezer. She uses this to explain how it's taking longer for the ice to melt at the north pole (because it's on water) but fails to explain why the water in the glass didn't freeze around the ice cubes. Not that they are seriously trying to teach science here.
I think this is appalling but what I find even more disturbing is that every single comment here bashes the concept of global warming. There is not one comment to the contrary. I do not believe in man-made global warming but if everyone does not have the same oppurtunity to comment then this site is irrelevent and should not be paid attention to by anyone. However, when a company does it, we have the opportunity to voice our displeasure with Build-a-Bear's tactics by choosing not to spend our money there. I choose not to watch mainstream media television programs which preach this nonsense or programs offensive to my sensibilities. I make note of who the biggest advertisers are and let them know I will not continue buying their products if they continue to sponsor this programming. Having the TV off most of the time in my house has been a great thing.

Check out the Hannah Montana crowd urging kids to unplug their cell phone chargers, when not in use, and other minimally conserving efficiencies. Rather than provide any justification for getting kids to worry about their chargers (I'd be impressed if they actually provided data in terms like Watt-Hours or Amps) the goal seems to be a fuzzy 'do good' feeling devoid of any proof that performing the 'unplug ritual' is superior to the 'take shorter shower' ritual. It bothers me to be lectured by kids who have no idea about physics or math or economics when the subject of the lecture is really a complex summation of all those disciplines. At this point it is obvious to me that these messages are not just puff pieces for public benefit but part of a scheme aimed at getting children indoctrinated into the religion of global warming. The problem of global warming is no longer the problem, it is the solution to global warming that is now the real problem.

I try to teach them that it was just a big marketing ploy to steal their hard earned money, they should save up for something they really wanted not just spend it because their friends have one. I am torn on this one. There are thousands of teenagers and managers working at these stores, trying to make a living and survive. We are capitalists. Ding the CEO's image all you want, but I cannot advocate boycotting that could put people out of work. I have been boycotting china for 2 years now. I spend hours a week searching for American made products before I buy. It is NOT more expensive, just better built or better quality. Like gas, where is the cheapest gas you can buy? Murphy's! Thats right the gas station in front of your super store is selling gas made from American oil that is refined right here in American and is the lowest price in town. Jeans and Overalls? Round House! American made for 106 years and sells for the same or less than the imported stuff. Pilot makes a pen called "Easy Touch Retractable" American made. Mega-brands makes American made pencils. Crayola Crayons are American made. Pantene Shampoo and Conditioner (oh you need it cheap? VO5 Shampoo and Conditioners) Oral B tooth brush… American made. Some of the Reach brands are too, just be sure to check the back of the pack. Morton Salt…. American. Lodge Cast Iron skillets and pots have always been American made AND you will never need to replace them. Baker Aluminum baking pans and Pyrex glass cook ware and storage are American too. These are all products made in America and products we use everyday. It is probably made by Union workers too. If you hunt hard enough you will find better American made products at affordable prices.
You want American food… grow it, raise it, hunt it or visit your local farmers market. Its not that hard to do.
Stop crying about not being able to find American made. Its here and available. At least make the effort to find an American item first.
Now, I will say that I have not found much, if any, in the way of electronic toys (TV, DVD, Computer) that are American made, so that is a different story and I am still working on it.

I've been an appreciative customer of Build-a-Bear for the past year. My daughter very much enjoys your products and shopping at your store, and I don't believe we've ever been dissatisfied with a purchase. We do also frequent the "Build-a-Bearville" website and enjoy the interactive games you've set up at no extra cost to the customer.
I do agree with much of the sentiment you've received from other customers: the "Global Warming" video at the North Pole in Build-a-Bearville is inappropriate for children. Like it or not, global warming and climate change are heavily disputed issues, and recent news stories indicate that much of the pro-global warming data has been tampered with. Unfortunately, children are not scientists, and have no way of disputing whether or not global warming is a real phenomenon. I can speak from experience, however: we recently moved from Alaska, and the purported effects of global warming were not obvious to us. We saw snowfall in October which continued until April, with temperatures easily hitting 20 below zero (and this was in the warmer part of the state). I would prefer that my children not be exposed to such a complex political and scientific issue.
I am otherwise appreciative of your fine products. Unlike some people, I do not intend to boycott Build-a-Bear over a silly video. However, I did want to express my concern, and hope that your company uses a bit more discretion in the future. Thank you for your attention.

They would tell you that the preponderance of evidence supports the theory of man made climate change, and if you don't agree with it you should publish your objections in the peer reviewed literature where fellow climate experts go to debate the science. My geologist friend Bruce Molina tells me that of the 2000 valley glaciers (700 of them named), only 20 are advancing, due to a warming period that has lasted for the last five decades. Now he is not sure what has caused this warming and is not willing yet to assign it to man's activity, but he says the fact that it is warmer is undeniable. Obviously he has never met you because you appear quite willing to deny the obvious facts.

Our girls were so excited when Build-a-bear came to our area. It's been a great treat on a rainy day, a nice reward for good grades, fun for birthday parties and great gifts for our neices/nephews. But after reading this and watching the video, we will no longer be going to Build-a-bear, nor will our children be allowed to play on that web site. I haven't seen a dime of money generated by cap and trade, as there is no can and trade legislation in place. The real money is provided by the fossil fuel industry to delay climate change legislation. There is $50 trillion worth of untapped carbon energy in the ground and they will pay dearly to make sure nothing prevents them from tapping it… regardless of the environmental consequences.

I'm going to take issue with your your facts there red. Since I have no memory of unemployment going over 10 percent during the Carter administration I looked it up on the gov website. It's inconvenient, but people can actually fact check the political nonsense that you make up. Unemployment in the 70s peaked at 7.7 percent in 1976. It was at 7.1 percent when he left office. It did hit a post depression record of 10.3 percent during 1982 and closed out the year at 9.7 percent. But as every good righty knows, that was during the Reagan years. That compares with the 10.2 percent unemployment we are experiencing today.
Inflation was also a serious problem in the late 1970s and I will give you that one… Paul Volcker and Jimmy Carter made it worse with monetary policy at the fed that introduced us to the concept of stagflation.
I only wish I was asleep. If I was asleep then I could wake up from this Obama nightmare.

Have you looked at the qualifications of these "scientists". The total signatures is over 31,000, of which just over 9.000 are PhDs. The PhD is the entry level requirement to be considered a scientists, but not on this list. 2,500 of them are MDs and Veterinarians. So a bunch of animal doctors sign a petition and you think it supports your argument that climate change is a hoax….
But it gets better. I picked two of the PhDs at random and one of them was actually a physics professor… the other one had an advanced degree in psychology. I suspect the animal docs know more about climate change than this woman.
12,000 of them had bachelors degrees in everything from physical therapy to mathematics. All excellent degress, but hardly qualifies one as a climate scientists. What was missing was people who are engaged in the study of the climate. There were lots of weathermen, but I didn't see more than a couple of names I recognized, and I would almost bet money there are not many peer reviewed papers that come from this bunch. They prefer to hang out on the blogs instead of doing science.

I was in college at the time when that book came out and I was assigned to read it (though I don't remember the name). Nobody but students actually read it because it was pretty scary predictions. Sadly, Newsweek did a story on it and brought it to the public consciousness.
Basically the author approached world population like it was compound interest and forecast 1970s birth rates several generations into the future, increased the food supply arithmetically and sounded the alarm. But he made no allowances for third world birth control, technology, and declining live expectancies in third world countries (to name just a few).
Flash forward 35 years and now climate deniers are using this unproven, unscientific theory as proof that climate science is some kind of hoax… apples and oranges.
