ACORN Scandal in The Washington Post: Ready…Aim…Scrub!

Yesterday I picked up The Washington Post from my doorstep and scanned the front page for coverage of the latest ACORN scandal. Call me naive if you want to, but The Post is my hometown paper and I maintain high expectations. Yes, even from well-educated liberals in the elite media.

This turns out to be ”my bad,” as the kids say. Apparently I had failed to take into account what a huge news day it was. The Washington Post couldn’t possibly make room on page one for a story about a taxpayer-funded organization conspiring with a “pimp” and “prostitute” to create brothels for underage sex slaves from El Salvador. If they had done so they would not have had the space to publish a 5 by 7 inch photograph of “Principal Judy K.” squirting hand sanitizer on six-year-olds at Matsunaga Elementary School. The photograph is accompanied by an article titled, “Ready…Aim…Scrub!” Kids have germs? STOP THE PRESSES! Bob Woodward is doubtlessly kicking himself for missing that one. (Sorry Bob, you snooze, you lose).

Another front page stunner (column one, nine inches), informs the reader that grocery stores are slashing prices. It’s not an irrelevant story — something one might expect to find on page three perhaps…

But no, there on page three is a story about ACORN: “ACORN to Review Incidents.” It’s tempting to dwell on that gripping and informative headline, but let’s dive on into the content.

Credit where it’s due, reporter Darryl Fears does mention the fact that ACORN workers attempted to aide and abet “underage sex workers.” This is a minor detail that much of the MSM, as they begin to cover this story, have willfully neglected to mention — The Daily Show being an outstanding (and hilarious) exception. Hey Jon, thanks for the outrage!

Mr. Fears goes on to provide “background” on James and Hannah:

“O’Keefe, a self-described filmmaker, and Giles, the eldest daughter of a conservative Christian minister in Miami, visited ACORN offices in the summer. An ACORN spokesman said they were turned away in Miami, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, where workers called police and filed a report. But workers welcomed them in the other cities.”

First of all, this reporter repeats the false and unsubstantiated claim from “an ACORN spokesman” that James and Hannah were turned away from multiple ACORN offices. (Let’s put this rumor to rest. Footage was obtained at every office they visited and you will see them all here on Big Government.) More disturbing is the reference to Hannah’s father and his profession.

And in case you missed it the first time, Mr. Fears repeats himself in the very next paragraph:

“Giles is a journalism novice who has written two columns for the conservative Web site Townhall.com. Her father, Doug Giles, serves as minister of the ultra-conservative ClashChurch near Miami, where he proclaimed that liberals “spit on the Word of God,” according to a report by the Miami New Times.”

No mention that Hannah attended the National Journalism Center in Washington, DC. Local angle, anyone? No, this reporter thought it was somehow more relevant to mention that her father conducts church services in Florida.

Pass the hand sanitizer, please.

As most of you outside of the MSM know by now, the House voted overwhelmingly last night to defund ACORN. And this vote, of course, came rapidly on the heels of a landslide vote in the Senate (83-7) to cut off federal funds to this organization.

Yet again there is no such headline on the front page of The Washington Post today. Nor will the reader find this headline on page 2 or 6…or 26. Instead Mr. Fears and Carol D. Leonnig present a puff piece about James and Hannah under the headline, “The $1300 Mission to Fell ACORN.” No mention of the House vote in this article, until you jump to page A16.

It seems that The Washington Post, once legendary for their commitment to investigative journalism, is demonstrating a bizarre new commitment to scrub the news from their newspaper.

I simply LOVE to read, but they don't even write to the level needed to hold my basic interest.
I don't have time to waste with their drivel – but fortunately, there are alternatives.
It is actually fun being the most informed person at work by a long shot. Everyone comes to me for news on what is going on in the world. One of these days I suppose I will tell them where I am getting the news from, but I want them to become fully addicted to hearing the Truth first.

Am I alone in believing that health care is far less important than some sort of voter reform. I don't believe that simply being of age and a legal citizen is enough in this day and age.

I do know that allowing special interest groups of any kind like ACORN and or an affiliate to influenc an election by registering voters who obviously don't care about voting and care more about receiving a free cigarette is the sign of a stupid society.

Look I believe there is a right to vote, but I don't believe there is a right to influence any election through the organizing of poor people who could care less about anything than the next crack rock.

Driving in this country is considered a priviledge. However so long as anyone meets all the requirements it is a right. The right cannot be taken away so long as all requirements are. This is touchy I know but there just should be some requiremnts to gain a Voters ID other than I'm here legally long enough.

Voter ignorance is relied upon by those who would do our country harm and for recent example you have Obama.

I really did not anticipate how far down the so-called MSM would stoop when confronted with a story this explosive. It is truly stunning how deliberate the avoidance is.

Does anyone in these organizations have at the very least, a small sense of shame for how exposed they look?

The Chinese water torture strategy hatched by Andrew was not anticipated by these losers, they banked on the story being a one or two day event that they could easily bury. They are being stripped down in front of the whole country and shown to be no better than the perps at the ACORN crime syndicate.

People who used to think I was exaggerating the media bias, or thought that the bias was not that widespread, are scratching their heads. Let them keep ignoring the story. I actually called on Monday to cancel my subscription and explained that the Post was now completely irrelevant. I said I understood that they had a liberal slant, but I always assumed they were honest enough to report the news. Now they're not even honest when they deliberately refuse to report the news. The subscription desk told me that if I cancelled my subscription I would miss out on all those great recipes in the food section and the important articles in the weekly health section! From this I can only conclude that the Post has decided to become a daily magazine with occassional news articles filling in the spaces between Michelle's fashion choices and Bo's dog training tips.

It is transparent that the game plan will be….elected officials “see we stopped giving ACORN and funds, no need to explore further especially not for who may be involved (read many of us in these elected positions).” The MSM has to “not” be interested now, so as not to be interested in pursuing “who knew what and who benifited then.” ACORN transforms into another organization that continues to take government money to put in pockets of their elected supporters and keep them in their positions.

The reality is while claiming to aid the poor and underprivilaged many of these organization share the proceeds of actual aid between high level executives and the politicians whom they are funneling the money to.

We’re going to need a lot more Pimp and Ho outfits to clean up all this.

Nice find, Cowboy. The Post does does seem to have better coverage online (I wonder if that Milbank piece made it to the print editiion?), and they did cover the House vote on their website. I take out after the reporters here a bit, but it's the editors who are responsible for selective censoring in the paper (and also for abiding sloppy reporting).

I don't believe any pressure towards the entrenched media will make a difference. We would have a better chance converting them to Christianity than our point of view! There could be thousands of letters, calls, whatever, it won't make a difference. We need to make an impact in their wallets, corporate and personal! These papers and television media can be brought down. I believe it is called…community organizing ha ha ha! Seriously, I do believe that if we the people, the majority of the people that are not left wingers, have a concerted effort toward that goal, it would work. We need leaders of this movement and it's not the republican party! It must be a new movement that does not associate itself with the old republic guard. Also we need to stop letting RINOs join with us. Call them for what they are and exclude them. They can't be democrats at all, because just the association with them is enough to spoil the movement.

If anyone is still reading down this far… I just wanted to point out that "liberals" in the religious doctrinal sense is different than "liberals" in the political sense. Doctrinal liberals don't take the Bible literally. To them it is a good book with good stories and lessons, but deny things like the six-day creation, world-wide flood, virgin birth, etc…

I don't know if that's what Hannah's father meant, but we don't get the context of the statement. So it's reasonable to give him the benefit of the doubt on that one. Don't you think?

Take screenshots often and save them on flash drives NOT on your computer's hard drive. Store them in a safe place. Even record Television broadcasts with a video camera and keep the media card or tape in that same safe place. We will need evidence!

You know, I never thought I would see such criminal behavior from so many so called "professionals" in my life. It is such a sad thing that we have to do things like this, but when your way of life is under assault, you do what you must. Good luck to all the citizen journalists out there. I propose that the MSM is almost all leftist is that most of its reporters were drawn into the field to be the next Woodward and Bernstein (it has been 35 years so the senoir reporters are from that era). Of course they calling was not to discover the truth whereever it leads but to be the reporter to uncover evil Republican misdeeds.

Also they all wanted to work for Ben Bradlee as opposed to most conservative journalism grads who wanted to work for William F. Buckley. Notice that most conservative writers work at monthly magazines and scholarly think tanks.

Another component is that the Watergate Era reporters rose to positions that had control over hiring. They only hired libs like them.

Seriously, your remarks are not clever. There is a serious and accelerated attempt by our government to tear apart our country and rebuild it in a socialist nation by any radical means necessary. The people who truly love this country and the constitution it was founded on are scared of losing something very precious; their freedom. These people are speaking up, asking questions and trying their best to hold government accountable. Your finding out that in some cases we have no Media Maura. Thats O.K. we understand, as you note this is not a right or left issue. This is an issue of human decency(trafficking of 13 year olds for sex), and how we want to treat other human beings in this world. The question you now have to ask yourself is what other information is the media you subscribe to not telling you?

The Washington Post has become irrelevant. There subscription rate is falling faster than ACORN is falling under the Obama bus. Their little party they advertised this past summer where anyone could rub elbows with their staff writers, painted the organization for what it is. They are not an objective news and fact finding organization, but in fact an influence peddling group of hacks whose mission is to shine the turd known as the Obama administration. If ACORN had not been defunded by both Houses of Congress, the Washington Post would not have written one word about the sting operation.

If they really called the police then why have we not seen the release of those calls from the police record? They ARE PUBLIC RECORDS! It shouldn’t be too hard for an organization as big as acorn to get them…. where are they?

Even if one only makes a call to a police line they are recorded. Where are the recordings?

I hope that Acorn does file suit against the videographers and Fox news. Then we will all get to see who is connected to whom and how our dollars were spent.

I'd be interested to see when the police report was filed. Did they file a report after they knew the hammer was coming down in the other cities?
Also will biggovernment.com post all the footage from each of the places they went? I'm sure there are good people that just happen to work for acorn because they need a job. A bad paying job it may be…but a job none-the-less.
Over all though, this group is rotten to the core. I hope this blows the lid off acorns scams for good.

Well it looks like they waited to file the report. Katherine Conway Russell, ACORN Housing Corp.'s Philadelphia office director. Says that she didnt contact the police until after she had spoken with anothe ACORN official,and it was apparent that O'Keefe "lied to get his appointment," …. http://mediamatters.org/research/200909170031
So it seems to me that after contacting the other "unnamed" official maybe ACORN was starting to put two and two together. Maybe the call to the cops was a CYA on the part of ACORN that knew something was up…just not what.
I'd love to see the Philly video to see just how taken aback they were while the couple was there. Also a timeline of the tapings so we could know where Philly fell in the taping…..
