Gulf Oil Crisis: Questions for Spike Lee and Kanye West
by Monica CrowleyNow that we are well into the 6th week (Day 43) of the catastrophe in the Gulf, furiously gushing oil continues to destroy one of the world’s most gorgeous and valuable estuaries: it’s lapping up in and around New Orleans and the rest of the Louisiana coast, as well as the coastlines of Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. The destruction to the Gulf region is now reaching—and some say even surpassing—the levels of damage inflicted by Hurricane Katrina.
Here’s a question: I wonder when Spike Lee is going to make a film about the oil spill like the one he did about Katrina, with the underlying theme being that New Orleans was abandoned by the essentially racist federal government led by President Bush. I also wonder when we’ll hear from Kanye West, who raged on national television that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”
The oil spill is destroying the exact same areas in the Gulf region. Hey, Spike: Does Obama’s lethargic and passionless response to the oil disaster make him a racist? Hey, Kanye: Does Obama’s lack of any kind of coordinated and effective federal response make him a hater of black people?

Furthermore Obama and liberals created this issue by demagoging Katrina, and now are finding out first hand that talking is a lot more difficult than actually doing. I didn't even know that Kayne West existed until he stole the show for that little white girl on some award ceremony then I read it on some conservative website. You couldn't pay me to see that guy perform. I am very selective of what I will pay for in the theatre or rent in the red box. I do as little as possible to support the Hollywood Cesspool. However when I get out of town visitors the first thing they want to do is go to Universal Studios and Hollywood to see the stars homes. This will also allow the employment stats to go up since he'll create new government jobs and that oughta boost the economy (yea right)!. Never mind all the oil & gas, seafood and transportation industry jobs lost along with the supporting local businesses that benefit from these with his 6-month moratorium on drilling and completion of existing wells. They bitch because BP had a blowout but fail to realize all the restrictions on drilling closer to shore forced the oil & gas companies to explore in deeper waters.
Since all these supposed "green jobs" are ready to crank off today, much less tomorrow or the near future, the question remains: How are they and the rest of this country supposed to fuel their vehicles and aircraft when you shut the oil & gas industry down. These rigs they plan on shutting in will continue their contracts but move them overseas. It'll be years before they ever return back to the states. I guess Chavez, the Saudis and all those other countries that love us so much and accept our money will be rolling in the dough. Even China with their recent landing of Iraqi oilfields will be cashing in as well.

WSJ reported yesterday that BP sought three revised permits in 24 hours – all on BO's watch. That was a screaming red flag to MMS that BP did not have a clue how to drill in a foot of water let alone 5,000 feet. BP the biggest contributor to BO. After Katrina hit the Bush administration was completely decimated for the lack of response, even though the state of LA and New Orlean’s itself had not put in effect a plan to physically evacuate a whole region against people’s will if necessary plan. The Government has dumped enough money into New Orlean’s to rebuild that city from the ground up 10 times over and I bet if a big rainstorm came through there still would be someone screaming from a roof top. Paper plans are just idea’s until a REAL disaster hits… that’s when the B*S* stops and the rubber meets the road.

Sounds like you are maybe a bit unseated that someone else is making money. BP pays taxes more money that I could ever dream of earning in 6 life times. They invest in the community and they pay people decent wages, use to be they paid better wages than the government did, but now that Obama has everyone else s money government workers earn lots more. Where I worked in Houston, we rented the top two floors to BP while they built a different building. They invested in the community, the workers were happy it was a well run organization. I think before convicting them, we should give them a trial. I agree the government should not be a major player in the stoppage because our government is so stupid and inept they are only going to make it worse but to throw BP to the wolves is the worst we could do, maybe BP can create some jobs cleaning this mess up.

However; this inept government needs to stay the hell out of the way. “We been on this since day one” – my ass! In reality, the government shares the blame since the MMS passed inspections that didn’t live up to the requirements and evidence is clearly being made some staffers of MMS used their positions for personal gains and entertainment. Sure BP took advantage of this but that doesn’t eliminate MMS from the liability either. And THAT is on Obummer’s watch! All we want him to do is get out of our damn way, keep his ass in Washington and give our local officials and the companies working to clean this mess up more room to do our jobs.

First of all, if you did any type of research before posting this you would know that Mr. Lee has just completed his new film on this event, and even reprimanded Mr. Obama for the slow response. Second comparisons about the devastation of the landscape are comparable, but 11 people died in this case compared to the thousands that died over the days following the Katrina events. Last time I checked nobody was dying in Obama's "slow" response. All that being said, he needs to be more active, BP started this and lied, he needs to just take it over and lead.

It's not the federal government's job to issue an evacuation..its the local gov't that's responsible for that. The federal gov't is on the hook for the clean-up and restoration AFTER the disaster. Anybody that knows anything knows that below sea level is a bad place to be when a hurricane comes to town…and the fact that all those people watched as Katrina gained strength for FIVE (5) days and didn't evacuate is what is truly telling for mayor Nagin…

Let’s get one thing straight about Hurricane’s and Louisiana residents since this seems to be part of the discussion.
People receive ample notice (usually at minimum, 5 days) for the threat of a hurricane hitting shore in some general area(s), thanks to advancing technologies. Coastal townships know well in advance (if they care at all to educate themselves) of the threat of a hurricane. Preparedness is ALWAYS the key. If you live in coastal areas, you accept the responsibility to YOURSELF, YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR COMMUNITY to cooperate with local authorities and their instructions. And there usually is ample time to “LEAVE” (aka: Evacuate), if one is in the position to leave. If not, there are plenty resources available if and when necessary. NO town’s leadership will willfully refuse to help a resident incapable of leaving on their own resources – NONE! BUT, if you choose to stay behind and ride it out, you WILLFULLY accept the consequences and the chance that you will not receive help immediately – or die.
People in Katrina’s wake had advance notice, PERIOD! Sure there are many who stay behind, but they stay behind PREPARED for most possibilities (if they have some sort of sense). And when the hurricane is done, they become part of the effort to get their communities back on line. Those who choose to stay behind because they simply don’t want to leave (when they can), can’t expect the government to focus on just them when they are in danger. And that’s because they endanger the very persons trying to rescue them.
It is estimated there is nearly 1,836 documented deaths due to Katrina. But the unfortunate thing about this statistic is that it should NOT have been anywhere near that amount. And THAT is not because Bush hated black folk. And THAT is what these two morons, Lee & West accused Bush of.
Spike Lee was cute with "Do the Right Thing." Since then, he's become just another boring, race-bating, bigoted, stereotypical racist — in my opinion, of course. Thankfully, I'm still free to have and express my opinion, but I'm not sure how long that will last given the course of the current administration.

I was just thinking; if this well were a shallow water well, we probably wouldn't be having _near_ the amount of trouble closing up a failure like this. Most likely the well would've been capped in less than a week, if that. It's MUCH easier to work on the ocean floor when said floor isn't hundreds/thousands of feet down underneath tons of water in an environment that is definitely not conducive to solving problems.
The environmentalists insisted that we couldn't drill for oil in shallow water; they rightfully should bear some of the blame for the environmental fallout caused by this catastrophe.
That's what I've heard although they are getting old.
The governor's name was Kathleen Blanco. She failed and Nagin failed.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
Since the moments after the oil rig explosion on the night of April 20, DHS has played a lead role in federal response efforts—deploying the U.S. Coast Guard to search and rescue the 126 people aboard the rig, and quickly leading efforts to establish a command center on the Gulf Coast to address the potential environmental impact of the event and to coordinate with all state and local governments. Secretary Napolitano leads the National Response Team, an organization of 16 federal departments and agencies responsible for coordinating emergency preparedness and response to oil and hazardous substance pollution events.
U.S. Coast Guard
The Coast Guard has played a major role from the very beginning, when it responded to the explosion on a search and rescue mission to save lives. Pursuant to the National Contingency Plan, Rear Admiral Mary Landry was named the Federal On-Scene Coordinator to lead a Regional Response Team which was stood up that included DHS, DOC/NOAA, DOI and the EPA, as well as state and local representatives. As the event escalated, Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen was announced as the National Incident Commander for the administration’s continued, coordinated response—providing additional coordinated oversight in leveraging every available resource to respond to the BP oil spill and minimize the associated environmental risks.
Department of the Interior (DOI)
The morning after the explosion, Secretary of the Interior deployed Deputy Secretary David J. Hayes to the Gulf Coast to assist with coordination and response to the event, and provide hourly reports back to the administration. Since then, DOI has played a vital role in overseeing BP’s response efforts while—at the President’s request—working to deliver a report with recommendations on what, if any, additional safety measures should be required for offshore operations. Secretary Salazar has announced that inspections of all deepwater rigs and platforms are underway.
