Stark Admission: Democrat Congressman Admits Debt Limit Debate Is a ‘Charade’
by Lee StranahanHere’s some straight talk from a Democratic Congressman that pops the Washington drama balloon about the Debt Limit – Pete Stark (D-CA) told an audience Saturday morning that the Debt Limit debate is a ‘’political charade’. Not exactly anything that President Obama wants the American people to hear while he’s trying to convince them of the utter, complete and immediate need to raise the limit.
Here’s the video of Stark speaking on Saturday, July 23.
“You’ve heard a lot about the Debt Limit. And I guess that’s – I don’t know how many of you are worried about it or concerned about it. The fact is I think it’s a political charade.
“I’m afraid that the Democrats have done that in the past, threatened to shut down the government. I don’t think there’s a chance that it will happen. I think the last time somebody did, they lost enough seats in the House of Representatives to convince them it was a dumbest thing they ever did. [It] doesn’t get us anywhere, it doesn’t help anybody, and to extend the Debt Limit is nothing more – than people have described it – than that the government’s credit card doesn’t run out of resources.
“And we all know we have more debt than we should be carrying and there’s a fight going on: Should we raise your taxes to lower that debt? Should we quit government spending? The question is if we quit government spending, what do we quit spending? Do we quit spending on Social Security and WIC and children’s daycare? Or do we quit spending for corporate jet deductions, and those sorts of things? And those are the political fights.
“They are going to go on. You’ll hear about them ‘til the end of the year. My prediction is that we will extend the Debt Ceiling; and the Republicans will accuse us Democrats of being big taxers and big spenders; and I guess we’ll accuse them of not being concerned about the elderly, and the poor, and children.
“And the country will go on with its debates, and we hope that you will all stay involved and express your opinions loudly and to all of us. …”

Since he mentioned spending cuts, perhaps they can do something about eliminating the 70 entitlement programs the feds have going on, making all federal employees contribute comparably to private sector employees on health insurance coverage (~24%), limiting the politicians' salaries to $100K/year, correcting all the tax loopholes, eliminating the estate tax, eliminating the pension benefits the politicians get, and capping the federal income tax @ 25%?
I was hearing on Sean Hannity's show a couple weeks back that either in Wisconsin or New Jersey, public teachers started contributing at least 12.5% to their health care coverage and the school districts this happened in went from a $400K deficit to at least a $1.4 million dollar surplus right off the bat.
He's making sense here. I agree completely with what was quoted.
Your logic isnt making any sence there, as it is the poor who live off the backs of millionaires and middle class. Besides, taking more money from them will not solve any issues at all, it would just create more problems as they would end up loosing more jobs and creating even more poor.
So, how about we end the stupid class warefare and move to the real issue. In order to create revenue and get the economy going again, why not stop stepping on businesses and allow them to grow and employ more people, and the more they employ the less of them become poor as they have jobs now. Or if they dont want to be employeed, they could create their own business instead and just grow from there.
Tell me this one, why do you want to keep the poor as the poor. Why dont you want them to move up and do better for themselves instead of having the government hold them back?

The corporate jet deduction was part of Obama's stimulus package. The government was never "spending money" on it, they allowed people who purchased jets to accelerate depreciation on the jets. This was done to boost jet sales…in order to provide a boost to the economy. Taking away this 'loophole' is not an additional tax…and it was scheduled to end at the end of 2011…so I'm not sure what the fuss is about. Soundbites maybe?
Millionaires are already paying more than their fare share… the top 5% of earners in this country pay 85% of the tax revenue brought in the top 15% pay something like 98%…. and bottom 47% of earning Americans pay nothing…. So stop with the class warfare BS… it is just a lie told to anger the uniformed
What about cutting congressional salaries, foreign aid to our enemies and abolish the BATF, The Dept. of Ed., The EPA, and the IRS? How about cutting out all the pork in every bill thats passed in congress? How about repealing Obumer care? What about the Bailout money that hasn't been spent yet? Where do we cut spending? How about a 5% reduction in spending ACROSS THE BOARD. Every program must cut 5%… from welfare to defense. Then next year do it again.

Of course it's a charade, nobody wants to live within a budget, hence the reason there is such a massive amount of people in the world living under bad credit ratings. Politicians certainly don't want to live within a budget since, that means they can't grease their own wheels with taxpayer money quite so easily. Only the true Tea Party conservatives in congress are wanting to reduce the size of government, lower the national debt and provide a budget plan void of deficit.

I would go a bit further and say cut spending across the board by 15% and then cap it for a few years before cutting it again by 10%. Then from there, I would continue 10% cuts every year till we hit 50% and then cap them.

There are literally countless solutions to a number of "problems"! There's literally $6 billion easily being spent each year just by the feds to maintain excess assets, a lot of which they don't even use. The gov't should only be using just enough resources to operate each year, they don't need to own more. Printing $1 bills? Switch over to Susan B. Anthony coin dollars, that saves another $5+ million a year.
Not to mention, the government brings in $200 billion a day in tax revenues, with $20 billion in expenses accrued just for the outstanding liability. Weren't we supposed to be getting the most transparent government in history, along with the most ethical Congress?

You need to take basic macroeconomics. It is the wealthy who invest (meaning risk) their own money into businesses and companies who produce goods and services. These companies in turn hire employees at a fair wage based on their skills, experience, education, etc who then go out and use their wages to buy groceries, cars, homes (rent or purchase), and (wait for it) PAY TAXES! The more workers, the more tax dollars flow into the Treasury. There's no need to cut SS, WIC, Medicare, etc. The problem in our country is a SPENDING problem. Democrats cannot spend enough money. They have absolutely no fiscal responsibility. To them, money just appears out of nowhere. Cutting Obamacare alone would go a long way to restoring solvency, but our current president and his Progressive dem buddies will . . . not . . . allow . . . it! It was the dems and the Community Reinvestment Act that led to our economic meltdown in the first place. But instead of fighting the fire with water, this administration and the 2007-2009 democrat Congressional majority used fuel and made it much, much, much worse. One more thing, the wealthy already pay 47% and higher of all the taxes in this country. I think that's more than enough and no, I am not anywhere near wealthy.
… or do we stop funding NPR, ACORN-like groups, Planned Parenthood, Arts programs, liberal education junk, subsidies to "green energy" failures? Or do we reduce the size/cost of government by 25% (Obama increased it by 25%), cut all "high-speed train" wasteful programs? Start with the Department of Homeland Security (most useless organization ever conceived) and the TSA. Every over month they're in the news for molesting disabled minors and elderly people while letting underwear bombers go on first class.
Here is a solution to your useless dribble.
Instead of the stupid progressive income tax, redo the tax structure to a fair consumption tax. So then everyone at every income pays the same percent and it would be based on what they buy and not from their income directly. Then with a tax system such as that, then those who are poor could be more likely to move up as employment would grow as businesses would be taxed less. Then with more employment the government would get more revunue for the important programs.
But since you will miss that whole point entirely, as either you cant read or just dont flat understand. Another thing is that no matter how much taxes increase now, it would never bring down the debt as the government will use that money either for bailouts, bribes, political gain and so on.
In order to fix this problem we need to cut and cap spending along with balancing the budget and then scrap the tax code and move to a simpler system that works.

i) i know of NO ONE that has a marketable skill and wants to work that makes so little that they pay no income tax (the recently unemployed due to recession excluded). Your pretense that these poor people are being held hostage by low wages is just more dishonesty. They get paid a reciprical value to their work. Sorry if it hurts your feelings. But, if you have minimal skills….you don't bring much value to the value stream…and you aren't going to get paid much. I do guarantee you that if these folks had to pay some sort of tax out of their meager salaries, they would be much more careful when it came to elections. They would not readily line up being progressives promising entitlements and they would probably support debt reductions. Cause the money would be coming out of their pockets too. ii) How is the corporate jet stuff true? Companies are allowed deductions for MANY things in the interest of allowing them to profit…..so they can provide jobs and pay other taxes. Those taxes and jobs in turn help pay for all the free entitlements that YOU are so anxious to get…….the dishonesty is that there is some connection between a job provider getting a deduction and a deadbeat getting free handouts…..

Equality and fair share lingo are meaningless. In prog speak they are strictly reflexive and do not apply to anyone but the productive. It is the 21st century translation of the old 'from each according to his ability, to each according to his need'.
And there is NOTHING equal or fair about that. But progressive's don't care. Cause it is not about fairness or equality. It is about identifying the fact that THEY can not create value…..so, they must find a way to steal it.
For the progressive, the fair share of the rich is 100% of what you make beyond your barest need. And then they decide what to do with the rest.
The fact that 47% of Americans don't even have a share (they don't PAY taxes) is beyond them.
I drive past a government housing project on my way to and from WORK everyday. Half the cars parked their are nicer than mine. And, you see the same people sitting and standing around ALL DAY EVERY DAY.
That is what a fair share is to the progressives. I work. I pay taxes. They get a free home and whatever money they do have goes to a fancy car.
It's coming to an end tho. Either we will all be broke….and then those of us that have marketable skills will start over somewhere else…or we are done spending blindly.

While its nice of you to present an argument and then try to present my response, you can save your breath for your own lungs. I think the consumption tax is a worthwhile idea to consider. It moves the pardigm so much, its hard to imagine it could become reality, but I like the idea on principle.

In reality, there are many jobs that are very important to an organization that don't require special skill or technical knowledge. The reality is, a company will pay you the least amount they can get away with, and if there is someone else with the same amount of skill who will do the job for less, they get the job. Its how capitalism works, its why unions exist, and its why 47% of Americans pay no income tax.
And really, what a customer service person makes has nothing to do with who gets elected, other than how it may affect the minimum wage. One party thinks you lift by pulling from the top, the other party thinks its better to lift from underneath. The right lives by theories, regardless the theories have proven to fail. The left isn't much better, but at least they know the way to lift something heavy is by lifting from the bottom. But they are too socialist-minded, I agree with that indictment.
Skin in the game, as you put it, doesn't mean shiit when you're trying to pay the rent and feed a family.
its true that corporate jets get a better tax rate than other aircraft operators. Bringing corporate jets in line with the others is perfectly reasonable.
