ObamaCare: Show Me the SEIU Money!
by Liberty ChickThroughout the debate over health care reform, there has been a great deal of discussion over the role of special interests in influencing the votes of lawmakers. Liberal democrats, progressive think tanks and mainstream media have repeatedly accused anyone who opposes government run health care of standing with special interests instead of with needy Americans, painting them as greedy and selfish. And now that a bill has passed in the House and is on its way to the Senate, big government proponents of a ‘public option’ are already attacking their fellow Democrats’ own bill, insisting that it may as well have been written by special interests.
Funny they should mention that. Because, just like the stimulus bill, it was written by special interests.

While it’s true that Republicans certainly receive their fair share of donations from the health industry, the surprising truth is that Democrats actually receive more. Because there’s one giant special interest sector that everyone seems to be leaving out: Big Labor. And in the monarchy of labor these days, there is one queen that’s at the top of the money chain, and that’s the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the top billing union in its parent coalition, Change to Win. Especially when it comes to the issue of health care.
Let’s start first by breaking down the numbers.
- Labor union PACs account for about $305 million in campaign contributions from 2000 to the current 2010 election cycle, 90% of which has gone to Democrats.
- Add to that just the top 20 contributing 527 groups, and it throws at least another $470 million into the pot; the majority of which came from big labor and their front groups like “America Votes” and “America Coming Together“.
- So, when combined with the health industry donations that are so often the only numbers cited, this paints a bigger – and more accurate – picture and adds at least another $638 million that went to Democrats since 2000, thanks entirely to Big Labor. And that’s actually an understated figure, since I didn’t even include most of the 527 groups (just the top 20).
- SEIU alone has spent at least $187 million through combined lobbying, PAC and 527 group donations and expenses on candidates and policy issues – nearly 100% of which went to liberal policy initiatives and candidates.
So far just in 2009, SEIU has spent more than $2 million on direct lobbying, most of it for health care legislation, the stimulus bill, and the Employee Free Choice Act. And in 2009-2010 Congressional donations, they’ve surpassed $425,000, with 100% of that going to Democrats, especially those crucial to health care votes. And through their various other coalitions and campaigns, like Health Care for America Now and Divided We Fail (with AARP), they’ve expended even more in both financial and people resources. And who knows what those numbers look like when you add up all their coalitions and committees that don’t necessarily bear the SEIU name.
Outside of just health care, these have been some of the top 527s group recipients of their donations. SEIU funnels some of its indirect donations through these groups, among others. If you drill down on groups like America Votes, America Coming Together, and the Media Fund, you’ll also find some of SEIU’s regular financial collaborators, such as ACORN and George Soros:

In my prior post, “SEIU: Building a New American Health Care Empire?”, I discussed the hidden agenda behind WHY the big purple union is spending so much on political issues, primarily health care.
So, now let’s talk about WHO some of these people are. Who is sharing the shadow with SEIU and helping to shape today’s policies? Just like cogs in a wheel, each is one of the teeth on that wheel that, when engaging the other teeth, sets the others in motion. And that in turn moves other wheels too.
Start with Christopher Jennings, former Clinton White House health care advisor and founder of Jennings Policy Strategies. A SEIU health care strategy presentation was given in November of 2007 by Jennings, who himself is an avid lobbyist for SEIU. Conveniently, Jennings also lobbies for AFL-CIO, General Motors, Federation of American Hospitals, the American Board of Internal Medicine, Siemens AG and many others with interests in health care and retirement benefits, representing a total of more than $440 million for the political process.
Then of course, there is the power of purple in the White House, which certainly boosts their personal lobbying status on a number of fronts. As I mentioned before – like cogs in the wheel, they work together.
- There’s Andy Stern, SEIU’s President. He’s had over twenty visits to the White House (even more, off-the-books), most of those for health care meetings, and he bragged in 2008 that the SEIU spent $60.7 million “to elect Barack Obama”. Stern is also President of the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, Director of the National Academy of Social Insurance, Aspen Institute trustee, Chair of the Center for Community and Corporate Ethics, and Director of Rock the Vote. Dennis Rivera, head of SEIU Health Care, has also been on several trips to the White House for discussions on health care with his SEIU colleagues and the President.
- SEIU Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger is also chair of SEIU’s parent labor coaltion, Change to Win. She’s also a White House regular, as one of Obama’s personal appointees to the President’s Economic Recovery Board of Advisers (PERBA), where she works with other leaders, including AFL-CIO labor union President Richard Trumka and GE Executive Jeffrey Immelt to help determine the course for America’s economic recovery. (You can judge for yourself how well that’s working out).
- Patrick Gaspard, former vice president of politics and legislation for Local 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, now serves as the White House political director after serving as the national political director for Obama’s general election campaign. Gaspard also led lobbying efforts on behalf of SEIU on the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) in 2007. He’s also been very actively involved in the past with America Coming Together and Project Vote, and will deflect any ACORN or Working Families Party association, though the trail is all there, but that’s a post for another day.
- John Sullivan, SEIU associate counsel, now sits on the Federal Election Commission, appointed by Obama earlier this year. Sullivan’s prior career has also included staunch support for Teamsters union bosses as their Election Officer Counsel, and legal counsel to SEIU and other labor unions on everything from election campaigning rules, to strikes, and union benefits agreements. Perhaps most notably though, under Sullivan’s legal watch, America Coming Together, a Soros & Stern funded 527 group that serves as a financial funnel for donations from big labor, received the largest fine in FEC history – $775,000. And now he helps run the FEC. Keep a close watch on SEIU’s lobbying reports from this point forward…(See this video from the National Right to Work Committee for a fantastic overview on Sullivan).
- Craig Becker, associate general counsel of SEIU, was nominated by Obama to the National Labor Relations Board in July. Becker was instrumental in developing SEIU’s legal strategies for organizing informal workers, primarily home health care workers and similar health care industry workers, testifying on Capitol Hill in 2007 in support of unionizing such workers. There has also been separate concern over this appointment, relating to the Employee Free Choice Act and questions about the potential for Becker, whose public writings have stated that he believes “employers should be stripped of any legally cognizable interest in their employees’ election of union representatives”, to implement labor policies that would achieve the same outcome as the EFCA should that bill stall or fail in Congress. Senator John McCain has requested a hold on Becker’s hearings, so the outcome of Becker’s appointment is yet to be determined.
As we move further down this road into the health care debate, all eyes should remain on SEIU, the most special of all special interests. I’ve said it before and will say it again. Do not take your eyes off them. The big labor union has got tentacles into every area of this debate, and they reach from deep inside the communities of working Americans in every facet of our lives, all the way into Congress and the White House Oval Office. What you’ve just read is merely an overview of the money behind SEIU’s policy pushing arm. The people and the power behind the broader scope of SEIU are like pieces of a puzzle – put them each together just a little at a time, and the bigger picture will start to materialize.

Toss the union trolls back into the seiuer.
I see that Seiu Stern tried to get Lewis at Bank of America fired. Why not a bank chairman try to get Stern fired?
Amazing, and all of this money changing hands is apparently not only legal, it will stand up to ANY Ethics Board investigation, right?!? Please, this kinda crap should be stopped SUPER now and anyone caught with his/her hand in the cookie jar should be either forced to resign or outright kicked out of Congress. They should be ashamed of their immoral behavior.

Same theater, same play, same script, different actors!
One of life's axioms: Follow the money!
Three Cheers for Boeing by taking the hit and getting rid of the unions. Their move out of the Socialist State of Washington to the Red State of South Carolina is a body blow to the unions that have bled them dry over the last 40 years. We need more like them!
The economy will never improve and the deficit will continue to balloon as long as President Obama is hell bent on ramming trough another big spending government health care program. It just defies common to do this when Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Amtrack that are all on the verge of bankruptcy. So why is President Obama so hell bent on spending Trillions of more tax payer dollars on Health Care when it will clearly send the US down a spending death spiral? Answer: Could it be to pay off SEIU president Andy Stern who admitted he holds weekly meetings at the White House and, according to the guest list, several with the president himself. That makes Andy Stern one of the most important in Washington having spent over $60 million to elect Obama. Just think about it. If ObamaCare passes and all health care workers become government union workers, they will get 12 days sick time a year, 12 days of *HOLIDAY time a year and a month long vacation which add up to two months off a year. That is what is provided to the typical government worker. Since they do not have to work hard for their money , they just have to belong to a strong arm government union to get their share of the take from the hard earned money of other people and could care less about doing a good job as there are no consequences for doing a bad job. If you don’t believe me look up what happened at the Union run Martin Luther King Hospital in LA. Patients died because of all the incompetence and things got so bad the Hospital had to be shut down because no matter what was tried to resolve the problems, nothing worked. So when all the Union workers goes on vacation and there is no one around to take care of the sick and dying, and no matter how bad the care gets, there will be nothing that can be done to fix the problems. The people will have no choice but give in to the demands of the Union workers as they will have the entire US Health Care System by the throat turning everyone into slaves of a bunch of union thugs.

The union rank and file need to finally wake up and see thier leaders for what they are. It is the dues of those members that are enabling the destruction of this country. They need to start a rebellion and stop being such status quo sheep.

Your right, it's all about the culture of corruption, it ties into everything.
Good luck on that. Most SEIU types you will run into like being sheep just fine, as long as the sheep can get money to buy beer and cig's and free medical for sitting around on their donkeys they seem to be fine with it.
Had a former neighbor that he voted for Obama because he would get him more stuff. Bread and circuses for the bought off tenants while the corrupticians loot the treasury.
Come on now, my kids watch Barney, that's just not a nice word picture
You are right the John Sullivan video at the Right to Work Committee is great …"(See this video from the National Right to Work Committee for a fantastic overview on Sullivan)." They also have a funny one on Craig Becker: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=Right2WorkCom...

Concur with StoryKeeper.
I'd refrain from calling it Big Labor since the vast majority of American Labor IS NOT represented by Big Union. In fact if Stern had his way he would try to corral all Americans into Big Unions. Oh wait. He IS trying. (Do I need to clarify what I mean when I say "IS", Bubba?)
Okay. Now that we know what the definition of "IS" is….
Union rank and file should be provided with adequate protection from the intimidation tactics employed by Big Union Leadership. Using a basic litmus test – or smell test – Big Union Leadership is OBVIOUSLY an organized enterprise. Stern and the cronies are operating this enterprise. The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act is clear. A person who is a member of an enterprise that has committed any two of 35 crimes—27 federal crimes and 8 state crimes—within a 10-year period can be charged with racketeering.
Lather. Rinse. REPEAT. A person who is a member of an enterprise that has committed any two of 35 crimes within a 10-year period can be charged with racketeering. TWO.
Obama is just a lackey for Stern and his thugs. Stern heads a big machine. Look how SEIU got a good for nothing boy to be POTUS.
Even more "elite" health care institutions have issues. Thomas M. Priselac is president and chief executive officer of the Cedars-Sinai Health System. Mr. Priselac is in bed with this POTUS and the scheme that is understood to be ObamaCare.
Yet under Priselac's watch 260 patients had been exposed to high doses of radiation during CT brain scans. And everyone in Hollywood knows about the blood thinning drug Heparin 'drama' known as Dennis Quaid.
How much money does Cedars add to their coffers every year? Yet they are trying to 'force' staff at Cedars to 'volunteer' what little time they have free to themselves in order to make up for what can only be construed as 'staff shortages.'
Mr. Priselac. Is it just that Cedars is being cheap and hoarding cash? Or do you have staff shortages? And if you do have shortages NOW then how in the hell can you justify adding millions and millions of people to an infrastructure that appears – in your case – to be coming apart at the seams?
MLK Hospital is the proverbial tip of the iceberg. But why does Big Union Leadership care? What does any of this have to do with the "leadership" collecting dues?

Galt’s Gulch, red state America.
Gee, I think he meant Barney, the other Purple Peter Eater.
Not even paleontologists want anything to do with those bones, only special interests…
Thank you for this article. I've been preaching to my friends for a year now that ObamaCare is NOTHING but a program in which SEIU workers will manage our health care at the local hospital/clinic/doctor's office level.
Be ready for that big Bertha, who was fired once from McDonald's and once by Wendy's, to be the nurse who comes in to draw blood from you.

Your children are depending on you! That is if the school hasn't already completely brained washed them! Wake Up! If health care passes the senate we are slaves!
Thank you Liberty Chick and all at Biggovernment who take their time to do the research that we hard-working, non-union Americans don't really have the time to do for ourselves. And hats off to Andrew Breitbart for this website!
I know exactly what he meant, and I dont need to see his beans of franks.
There was this line, and you stepped right over it LMAO, clever though!
I have believed for a long time now that there are three things in our society that should have long been extinct – affirmative action, busing and unions. All three have outlived their usefulness and continue to exist long after the time they were necessary. Since this post is about unions, I will refrain from addressing the other two at this time.
When labor unions came into existence, they were necessary. There were literally no labor laws and every worker, man, woman and child was at the mercy of their employer. For the most part, labor conditions were abhorrent by today's standards, and the worker was pretty much a slave to his employer. But then something happened, and "we the people" banded together forming labor unions. These unions worked toward improving working conditions, limiting the number of hours in a day an employee could be required to work and increasing wages. As time went on, these same labor unions lobbied governments to pass laws to protect the worker from
being exploited by their employer. Child labor laws were enacted, safe working conditions were addressed (OSHA was born) and minimum wage laws went into effect.
Full disclosure – I have never been a union member. I have never worked in a union shop. That being said, I have and continue to know people who are union members. My brother-in-law is one of those. I have cautioned my sister, who relies on the VERY nice health insurance package provided by her husband's union, to watch out. Because if any version of the public option is passed in health care bill, the very first thing (expense) the unions are going to unload, is the healthcare package they provide to their members.
Most major unions are "self-insured." What that means is that the health "insurance" they provide to their members is not through an actual insurance company, even though it may be underwritten by one. The union pays the bulk of the claim. The unions have to have the "cash" to pay the claims.
Today, with the myriad of laws on the books designed to protect the employee, what exactly is the need for any labor union? Today, major labor unions are no more than major corporations. They have income and expenses. They have their own employees. They have their own interests to protect. They have a bottom line, and guys like Andy Stern and his counterparts would not have a paying gig without the union.
But I digress. Anyone who has ever worked in a union shop and has done the job better and/or faster than his union counterparts can attest to the fact that the union dictates the pace and quality of the work performed. Generally, and in plain English, all union workers are "dumbed down" to the lowest level. The slowest, most ignorant union employee receives the same exact wage as the smartest and the best union employee. There is no inherent reward for excellence. There is no real incentive to do better, to go above and beyond the call of duty.
And this fact is the real devil in the detail. This "equalizing" of input and output is nothing more than cleverly disguised Marxism/Communism. The cry of "Equal work for equal pay" comes from the communist Russia.
We are at a crossroads, fellow citizens. Will the greatest form of government in recorded history fall, much like the fall of Rome? Or will we stand up and take our country back? It is up to us.
I read the amount necessary to join "Healthcare for America Now" was 1/2 million. The unions are backing taking employer paid healthcare from their workers and put it in the incapable hands of the government? Something smells. By giving this up, the unions will be giving up a big part of their "collective bargaining" and the things they claim to do for workers.
This is all a trade off for more power and money for the democrats and the union. The unions back single payer, Obama & the Dems back card check…..the unions/'democrats gain money and power, the workers lose on both.
SEIU IS SCREWING THEIR MEMBERS for dues and sending this money to Obama. Impeachment NOW! And, Andy Stern needs to be charged for not following lobbyist rules and rackettering NOW! Come on now you “spineless Senators!” Your job is going to end in November of 2010
Excellent job breakin it down and making it understandable. They know health care is were the money. Baby boomers are soon to become voracious consumers of heath care. There will be options. You can fly to Costa Rica, Brazil, Thailand, or Colombia for basic proceedures — hip or knee reconstruction — hammer anc chisel work. US is by far the best for longevity after diagnosis with cancer. Obama could change all that.
Money talks except when you are up against an active conservative movement!
George Soros is the greater threat to America than Islamic terrorism. He needs to be stopped. People ignored it when he and Clinton supported Al Qaeda in the Balkans during the 1990s and he did everything they could though his NGOs to destroy Serbian resistance, both militarily and economically, to Islamic terrorist on their own soil and destroy that nations agricultural and industrial independence and make it subservient to the Globalist oligarchy. Who have though that Serbia was just he guinea pig for the methods Soros and the Globalist Elite would now use to destroy our sovereignty and make slaves of America. How do we fight this?
Just ask the simple question.. Why would a group want to donate almost 1 billilion dollars to Dems and not see a return? That's the funny part, they will and have got that money paid back and then some. Prob 10X that. Makes me sick.
For a price, The libs will write you a bill. Every one of these snakes in the grass is selling out the Constitution of the United States. Is this not an act of treason????? ; (
They have no morals or souls.. they are libs.
Thats just like battle with the Devil imo…
