SEIU: Building a New American Health Care Empire?
by Liberty ChickMost average Americans know little about the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Some know them as the people in purple shirts that beat up attendees at the town halls this summer. Some equate them to ACORN, or to the Obama administration. While there is some truth to all of the above, there is for certain one title that every voting American should be bestowing upon SEIU, and that is the title of “special interest”.

From 2000 to current, SEIU has spent at least $187,500,000 through combined lobbying, PAC and 527s group donations and expenses on candidates and policy issues – nearly 100% of which went to Democrats and to liberal policy initiatives. Much has been focused on influencing universal health care, as well as other indirectly related health legislation, such as public nutrition, food safety, research, and environmental health – all part of SEIU’s supposed plan for Building a New American Health Care System. Because, in their words, they “will not stop until every man, woman and child has quality, affordable care they can count on.”
So really…why is SEIU so invested in health care?
Because health care is the lifeblood of SEIU. In January of 2007, SEIU announced it would combine over 30 of its local unions to form a National Health Care Division. Years of organizing independent workers, such as home child care and foster care providers, home health aides, and nutritionists had led SEIU to discover untapped potential in what it deemed “health care workers”. With three divisions – Health Care, Public Services and Property Services – SEIU’s members are nurses, dieticians, lab techs, nursing home & home care workers, and child care providers. Others are janitors, cafeteria workers, and other service workers in state/public facilities like hospitals, schools and stadiums. SEIU has made health a key driver to creating these jobs. And they know the best way to protect their lifeblood is to entrench themselves into the legislative / policy-making process on a more permanent level. While two million members in SEIU is impressive, apparently they don’t feel it’s enough to build an empire. So if you’re SEIU, how do you create and maintain even more health care jobs?
Make Health Care your flagship policy issue and build your entire organizing strategy around it.
In November of 2007, SEIU held a joint public session , “High Road Health Care Charrette“, at their headquarters in Washington, D.C. A collaborative effort of SEIU, the Sloan Foundation’s Industry Studies Program, and the Center on Wisconsin Strategy (also a partner of Green for All and the Apollo Alliance), the joint session was a discussion on restructuring the health care industry to move more of the private insurance market functions into the government sector, arguing that doing so would increase productivity and drive down cost. But by productivity and cost, SEIU meant their own – increasing the government and health care sectors adds more SEIU members, and transfers the expense of their health and retirement benefits from their own books to the state and federal government instead.

In downloading one of SEIU’s public presentations from that 2007 session, titled “Rx for Successful SEIU Strategy for Health Care“, there were a few subtle points that confirm some suspicions. The issue of health care reform wasn’t just an organizational or social issue for SEIU. Health Care appears to have been a specific target that was carefully selected, massaged, manipulated and developed into a far more strategic policy initiative for SEIU. And all the rhetoric today in 2009 about fighting this fight for the good of all Americans would hardly seem 100% sincere.
While part of the presentation does provide some insightful information, several of the slides contain content that is somewhat revealing of a more selfish strategy. Some of the key takeaways that can be translated from this particular presentation focus on the benefits that SEIU would gain in winning their desired health care legislation:

In it, SEIU’s strategy states that it must make health care coverage its number one priority because:
- It helps with organizing and securing affordable care for members
TRANSLATED: If health care is provided and managed by the government, whether at the state and/or the federal level, SEIU members will be guaranteed coverage. And as health care or public services employees, SEIU members will now negotiate directly with the states and federal government as the primary employer and payer, rather than a series of scattered health facilities or independent caregivers that need to be organized. That certainly streamlines the union’s processes, and strengthens and centralizes SEIU power.
- It reduces pressure on compensation negotiationsTRANSLATED: If the government provides the health insurance for their members, SEIU no longer needs to carry the overhead and administration of those benefits. This certainly reduces pressure on negotiations, relieves SEIU of perception of being too costly, and gives their negotiations more breathing room to justify demanding higher wages.
- It creates demand for SEIU-provided services TRANSLATED: If government makes health insurance mandatory, it would increase the patient pool, which would in turn astronomically increase the demand for unionized health care workers (SEIU). In addition, if government also legislates health-related behavior and decisions, such as diet, exercise, food services, school & hospital cafeteria menus, vending machine content, restaurant menus, etc., it also creates demand for other SEIU members, such as their dietitians, school nutritionists, and “healthy” cafeteria and food service workers.
- Strong messaging about consequences of inaction needs to be developed and implementedTRANSLATED: Tie health care to the economy, the environment, and the budget and position it as a crisis. Influence public perception by portraying the current situation as “a health care system that is broken.” Repeatedly demand that health care for every American cannot wait or it will collapse the economy. Insist that the status quo is unacceptable. Work with scholars, partners, and health professionals to collaborate on and spread these talking points until they are taken as unchallenged fact.

- Candidates must be put on defense about flawed policy; champions must not always be defending
TRANSLATED: Supporters of government-run health care must be portrayed as serving in the best interests of the economy and of the American people; in contrast, opposers should be accused of supporting the status quo and “the same old ideas”. They should be painted negatively: vilified, politically attacked, portrayed as ignorant and discriminatory, labeled right-wing extremists who distrust our government.
- Messaging about why this is a sympathetic working Americans issue must effectively be deliveredTRANSLATED: Supporters of government-run health care must create enemies of working Americans: greedy insurance companies, opportunistic doctors, pharmaceutical companies, lobbyists, and fiscal conservatives. They must position health insurance as a fundamental right. The government must be portrayed as the only option for ensuring fairness in guaranteeing and providing that “right” to the American citizens. Opposers of a government option must be labeled with descriptors such as “unsympathetic”, “immoral” and “without any conscience”.
- “Where would stronger connections between industry scholars and SEIU help advance interests of both scholars and SEIU?” is a question that session participants are asked to consider.TRANSLATED: Influence public opinion through colleges, universities, research panels and think tanks. The outcome of this study from the Rutgers Center for Women and Work for example, enabled SEIU to try and claim that public school food service workers influence the health of our students, implying that outsourcing the function is bad (and hiring union workers is socially responsible):
“School food service workers are often ‘invisible’ as a factor in student well being”, said Mary McCain, author of the report for the Center for Women and Work at Rutgers. “But their role in food preparation and service often can have more influence on food safety and students’ healthy eating than official directives.”
In this blog post, SEIU also correlates the health of our nation’s “lunch ladies” to the health of our nation’s children, using it as a driver to argue for unionized workers over outsourcing. Or this one, “serving justice – and serving lunch.” (through propaganda, like the video below…)
SEIU has since been working diligently with scholars and research universities to collaborate on other studies that will produce outcomes that happen to support their views, in their effort to indoctrinate Americans unfamiliar with our nation’s founding principles of a free market economy:
- The Future of the Health Care Workforce in South Central/Southwest Wisconsin
From the Center on Wisconsin Strategy, 10/23/2008 - Costly Coverage: Premiums Outpace Paychecks, New State Reports from Families USA
Supported by Americans for Stable Quality Care, an alliance that includes Families USA and SEIU - Workforce Issues for the National Commission for Quality Long-Term Care
Research study performed by Brandeis University, January 2007 - By a Thread: the New Experience of the Middle Class
Report produced by Demos and Brandeis University, 2007
Another Demos report, “White-collar Workers Unite“, highlights United Professionals, founded in 2006 thanks to SEIU, AARP and Obama-Biden economic policy advisor Jared Bernstein.
Further reading into other presentations and documents of SEIU’s also brings about familiar language that sounds just eerily similar to that which exists in the current bills in Congress and in all the liberal Democratic government-run health care talking points.
Writings like these marry SEIU’s strategy with the repetitive rhetoric we hear today, and it simply solidifies the notion that SEIU and its sister labor unions of Change to Win are the special interests truly in power in Washington DC. If it’s not SEIU’s lobbyists, PACs or 527s groups peddling a government-run health care plan, perhaps it’s one of the many SEIU insiders working in the White House. Rather than focusing so much attention on the special interests that are the insurance companies, pharmaceuticals and other health professionals, Americans would be wise not to take their eyes off of this very special interest that is SEIU.

Is SEIU just another mafia organization in purple shirt?
The SEIU uses the same business model, the same modus operandi as ACORN; both quasi-communist socialist organizations. They operate no differently than Stalin did, when he was a community organizer, and built his power base with the oilfield workers in the Soviet Union. History does not change the methods and mannerisms of socialists
“Alright everybody! Put your right fist in the air…look at the camera, and say…I’m stupid!”
It damn sad when these people that are stooges for Stern and the rest of his cronies haven't the honor to put aside their self interest long enough to see what these marxist leaders of their union are doing to this country. Hope you damned enjoy your guaranteed wages and work, you lazy bunch of idiots.

Why do I see East German Soviet era border guards when you say SEIU?
All I have to say is is there will NEVER be a a "Girls of SEIU" in Playboy!!!!
The SEIU, ACORN, etal,,, should not be taken lightly. They have been planning this action for decades and will not walk away from their prize just because they have been 'found out'. This is going to be a long, drawn out battle and if the right side is to prevail, it needs to be persistent, patient, and LOUD.
The fact that we know their plan and have shed light on it means nothing. They may scatter like cockroaches when the light goes on, but it will take alot of concerted effort to eliminate their threat.
Isn't it about time unions became illegal? As a violation to free trade/free market? Due to their documented destruction of US based industry?
I know… it's a pipe dream.
Could it be that Andy Stern and George Soros are the wizards behind the Maobama curtain? To think that this narcissist in the White House thought of all this garbage by himself is laughable. BHO is nothing more than their groomed front man who carries their water.
Great article Mandy. You connected the dots….
and after I reviewed the SEIU LM2 financial reports, which you can Google online….it's clear that very little of the membership dues these unions collect actually are used for their members….but, rather for political activities, lobbyists, gifts, union senior management salaries and overhead, etc etc….
SEIU alone last year spent over $60,000,000 to help elect BHO…and now they want payback….they hope to increase their membership from the current two million to over five million union members in the next five years. If they do, it will help put the final nail in our future healthcare coffin — so to speak. Thanks again for this article.
I have been a Union worker for years and now I am very disappointed. It seems they have taken our dues and raised our dues for years and whenever we asked them to do certain things to benefit us (ESL classes and activities to bring members together, etc.,) they never did. Whenever we were in tough contract negociations and talking about voting down new contracts, they always talked people out of it. It seemed all our dues went to getting more members, like a pyramid scheme, and then all of a sudden, it was all politics. My dues go to people and policies that I don't agree with and they want us to be little soldiers for their favorite candidates–and I'm not talking about SEIU here!
If the Unions really felt bad for us, really were the good guys fighting for us in these hard times against "the man", than they would freeze or even lower Union dues. They think we're too stupid to notice all this. Many of us have nowhere to go to get away from it!
Boeing Strikes a blow to the unions! Their decision to move their manufacturing plant away from the socialist state of Washington to the RED, RIGHT TO WORK state of SC, is a big step in the right direction. UNIONS and the bloated contracts and salaries of their leaders are what is wrong with our economy. Bankrupt California, blow out all those stupid union and CALPERS contracts and they may be able to start recovering.
SCREW THE BLUE STATES!!!!
SEIU and ACORN are the American Nazis. They're racists and will come after you if you disagrees with them.
Everyone chant along!
What is wrong?
The care is lousy!
Who provides the care?
WE DO!
What do we want?
More power! More money!
What will that give us?
More of our care!
(This chant is recyclable for teacher unions as well. I wonder how long you could keep this going at a SEIU rally before they realized what is really being said.)
SEIU leaders use the union dues they collect to finance college scholarships fo rtheir own children (you can look up the names of scholarship recipients on their website, but they are very careful to scrub the lists) and to pay for parties and trips and conventions in luxury resorts.
Hey, "Disgruntled", can't you guys strike against SEIU? Just circulate a petition and demand vote. Better do it soon before card check becomes law.
Congratulations to the intelligent workers of South Carolina for recognizing a good deal. Too bad for Seattle (Land of the Liberal Lost).

I was wondering how long until some company took advantage of this. I am certain that if the Union keeps this up, Boeing may relocate their entire operation out of Washington State.
Pipe Dream……..Look at their actions….Some of their actions are certainly illegal! Voter Fraud, Embezelment, Extortion, a few to start.
They're on a break.
To StanH. I am LMAO! That was great. I am an SEIU fair share member ( not by choice). These people are ignorant of economics or facts for that matter. They strongly believe that capitalism is just for screwing the working people over. They are almost 'gay' for Obama. Here in California the demonize Gov. Schwarzenneger over the budget mess that has been created over the past 2.5 decades in a democratically controlled state senate. They are a corrupt special interest (while blaming special interests and big business). They stand in groups, raise their fist and look STUPID!!
So that is the grand strategy, keep repeating their falsehoods until they are accepted as truth?

Most of you probably don't think of the biggest danger. The difficulty in terminating union workers. If one nurse knows another, a fellow union member is being cruel or neglectful of patient or patients. They can't report them under union guidelines or they will be blackballed. While this may be a reasonable rule on a manufacturing job how do you feel about it being the case for your child or elderly grandparent? Check on it and you will find I am corrwect & a run the union members are gunh ho about. So how will the politicians deal with this one? I've ask but of course no acknowledhement. San Jose Ca.
Lower right corner of the picture, otherwise, I agree.

Exactly! but Who's going to take up that fight against Unions? Not our wonderful government.
I belong to a Union, the SEIU, NOT by choice however. My co-workers, whomever they maybe, voted for union three to four years ago. I did not vote for the company going union. I knew too well about unions, other unions, from the past. They are like a parasite within a company. They manipulate and talk people up with big hype to join! They raised my dues when they won a whole $ .30 raise. We won big for them, their pockets. Prior the union, the company itself gave me a bigger raise, anywhere from .50 to 1.00 an hour raise without a due. In addition, I had health coverage through the company and vacation. The union is always sending out a postcard for me to donate $5 more a month from my paycheck for them to help fund their political fight! I say bull****!!! What did this union win for me, nothing. For them, more money in their political corruption bank accounts!
A pretty face does not a beautiful person make IMHO.

Judging by their lack of responsiblity in maintaining their own health and appearances, they are unequivocally uninterested in the health and well-being of anyone else and are, therefore, assuredly not to be trusted anywhere near any living, breathing, tax-paying citizen of the United States of America. It is the most basic of human instinctual responsibilities to groom oneself and they don't even seem to have that discipline.
If you are in California or know others who work for unions in California, go to http://www.unplugthepoliticalmachine.org. It's an initiative to preclude public employee unions from using union dues for political purposes, including campaign contributions to any politician.
Wake up America! Seiu is a criminal organization! Does rachettreirng(?) sound about right? It sure does! What about its anti-American business model and practices? They do not care about their members, the one hundred and eighty million in campaign contributions shows that! That was members dues not Andrew Sterns private cash stash for his agenda driven politcal campaign with Rathke from the sister organization Acorn! You don't have to have the government paperwork to be affiliated just a clear cut connection which is right out front in your face between them. Rathke and stern are doing their best to shake down the government for cash and to push thru laws, by way of campaign bribes, to control your future. I wonder what will happen if the Russian mob starts to feel threatened by these two jerks? why aren't they trying to do in Russia? only in democratic countries? They need people they can bribe and control! Does Barney Frank and Chris Dodd come to mind? How about Conners from Michigan? or Schumer from New York? or any one of dozens of other political hacks in Washington.
But it doesn't stop there. It goes all the way down to some local governments, like the city of Chicago and Detroit. The state houses and governers office in Califorina, Washignton, Oregon, New York and Mass. Wake up America! The criminals who hate America are taking over and soon there will be no America left! Your children will be slaves with no hope of a better future. These people have taken over our schools and most of the state department and other Washington bureaucratic departments. We need to clean house now before it's too late! Stop voting because they act right or say they will give things! Nothing is free! Obama will give you change at the cost of your freedom! he's a communist, socialist, facists anything but American! Look at what he's allowing now the trials of terrorists in public criminal courts. This after they were caught shooting at our troops. What's he up to? is he trying to destory us? It sure seems like it!
Impeach the clown now before he destorys our country! He such a good American he's bowing to the Japanesse Emperor! This is the guy who leads, an ally now, the country that attacked us in 1941 and forced us to fight world war two. The Japanesse killed thousands of our troops by hacking them to pieces with swords while still alive! Setting them on fire and watching to see how long it would take for them to die. They tortured the wounded and starved to death prisoner of war! Obama thinks we were wrong for nuking them! Bull hockey! Obama is weak and the rest of our enemies can see it! He wiil get us killed by the millions because he can't indentify with america. He's Muslim and an outsider! Where is his birth certifcate. If its really a hawiian one why can't he show it? Its another lie America! It just like acorn saying they audited their own books and they did nothing wrong! Bull hockey! There is only on reason someone hides the books or won't answer the question. They did something wrong and don't want to incriminate themselves!
Man up Dawg! Mr. President! I'm shouting out to you! Show the BC and force Acorn to open the books! All the books! If you won't then be prepared for your one term or less in office! Impeach this clown before he destroys America and steals your childrens American Dream!

But it surely points to the fact that most SEIU employees know little about staying healthy themselves. They all look fat, lazy and out of shape. I'm sure there's a prescription pill or some government kool-aid to cure that also.
Nothing like an overweight health care worker telling you how to eat, eh?

Lets also remember Unions are exxempted from the Government run healthcare as well as Congress. Sounds fair right?
In respect to being loud, the right can be loud, the problem is we are loud with our facts and figures, and the left rolls out shrieking women to drown out opposing voices. Where are our shriekers???
The role of the POTUS has been greatly minimized these past few months. O has relied on Congress to do all of the heavy lifting without any oversight from the Executive branch (not that there would be much anyway). He just puts pen to paper when it comes time to sell his soul to special interests one piece of legislation at a time. He is no more than a shill who sells the end product to the "ignorant, smelly masses". Figurehead of a Banana Republic.

Sir Charles, you poor misguided soul. You have bought into union talking points. Such an argument applies to the days when unions actually cared about their employees – like a late relative of mine, who was a coal miner and needed his union in those days. Those days are no longer. We have things like OSHA these days. And many unions are busy taking money from their members and spending it on their own special interests. instead, not on their members Americans today can empower themselves to fight for their own needs, if they'd just try. I know because I was also once AFL-CIO, by force. I am the author of this post. Please read my bio. You'll find I'm nothing close to what you describe. Not a corporate stooge, not an insurance company rat, not rich folk. Out of poverty and into empowerment. All on my own.
