Counterpoint: Borat of the Right Releases Fantasy of ACORN Prostitution Ring

In the “gee, I made this not very smart person look really stupid” genre of film making- the sort of “ask stupid questions and play ridiculous characters and edit to make funny” made most famous by Sacha Baron Cohen- comes “Baltimore Acorn Workers support prostitution.”
Acorn is a community organizing network that works on a variety of issues, from voter registration to fighting predatory lending practices. In other words, it is just the sort of organization for poor people that the Right loves to hate.
According to the news stories, the video may show two (Black and seemingly not terribly educated) Acorn employees trying to help two (white and seemingly educated) young people figure out how to start a brothel with girls from El Salvador (who, not coincidentally, are here illegally).

Within this fantasy is every fear and desire of the far right: evil Black women activists, poor people, illegal immigrants, and sex.
Of course, it’s also every left wing fear and desire as well: two upper class white kids pretending to be a pimp and a prostitute in a way that can only be described as “are you fucking kidding me?”. He is wearing white pants and a blue oxford (very preppy) and a fur cape! What white college kid “pimp and ho” party did that cape come from? Also, as you watch the video, it is clear that these women are trying to help, but also seriously disturbed by the behavior of these two white kids. On the other hand, the class hierarchy is beyond them, the power dynamics well known to all the participants, and the women continue to try to please the white kids.
And who is this brilliant Borat of the Right? A young man by the name of James O’Keefe. According to his website, he
directed, scripted, produced and acted in a series of undercover videos showcasing racism and statutory rape at Planned Parenthood in 2007 and 2008.
Before that he served as Publications Coordinator at the Leadership Institute, where he helped initiate 22 independent newspapers and magazines on college campuses nationwide. He also gave lectures on campus strategy and fundraising, preaching the gospel of Saul Alinsky.
His most recent project is Veritasvisuals.com, a collection of satirical short films on newsworthy topics, featuring ridiculous situations and demands. These have included straight men with girlfriends getting married to each other in Massachusetts and petitions to adopt Gitmo detainees into American homes…
James got his start producing videos… at his alma mater, Rutgers University, where he founded The Centurion in 2004.
Okay, I don’t really get the Saul Alinsky reference, but the rest of it makes sense. A privileged, ultraconservative, straight white man who hates: same sex marriage, Planned Parenthood, civil liberties, and ACORN. Gee, who would have guessed that’s the genius behind this incredibly “shocking” piece of film.
The worst part is, of course, that this ultraconservative fantasy will be played over and over on Fox News, throwing grease on the fire that is white resentment. More “evidence’ that Acorn and other groups that work for social justice for poor people are in fact part of a vast left-wing conspiracy to deflower the purity of “our” women.
Perhaps we need a Borat of the Left who will make right wing nuts like James O’Keefe look ridiculous? Oh, never mind, they don’t need our help.

So, what does any of this have to do with the fact that ACORN regularly engages in criminal activity? We should give them a pass because they claim to be fighting for poor poeple?

Ok, so lets give the ACORN spokesperson the benefit of the doubt and assume that the tape was edited to make it look like what happened wasn't really what happened. So then, why exactly did ACORN fire the employees if they did nothing wrong? Why did they say they were going to conduct a thorough internal review if they did nothing wrong? If those employees didn't do what the tape suggested they did, shouldn't they be commeding the employees? Wouldn't they be defending the employees and the organization as a whole in that regard? They are acting as if the tape WAS NOT edited and that they are just as guilty as they appear to be on those tapes. Why, because they are guilty and the tape WAS NOT edited.

I'm not sure that a 'Counterpoint' is in evidence here. This isn't about Black people; this isn't about Poor people; this isn't about Women people; this isn't about Sex people.
This is about the willful promotion of activities that are neither lawful nor known to stabilize communities by agents of an organization with a professed mission to counter the very things they are encouraging.
While one may not care for Mr. O'Keefe's pedigree (how Ms. Essiq is privy to his, I know not), he is not the issue, and to submit a counterpoint, one must a) submit a point and b) it must be counter to the point in question. While the later is clearly present, it is the former I am having considerable difficulty identifying. Am I alone in this?

I've seen this video several times, and not once did I even detect the slightest hint of "disturbed" from any of these women….in Baltimore or DC. In fact, you almost get the sense that these women have never faced a situation they can't solve, no matter what.
I think this Ms. Essig is missing the point entirely. It shouldn't matter if this was a matter of prostitution, drug trafficking, or jay-walking….the point is that ACORN is advising people how to break the law and try to pass it off as legitimate. There is no way that this is just one isolated incident. We all know that this sort of corruption is the status quo with these guys….the only difference now is that we have proof.
I believe that the Saul Alinsky reference is in reference to the use of Alinsky's tactics by the right against the left, although obviously only those that are not inherently evil, which does narrow the pickings down a bit. The good news is that the left can (and will) continue to use them all.
I didn't realize that the black women in question were particularly uneducated or unintelligent. I guess that's because I've had much broader exposure to blacks in the world outside of academia than the author. When I was first exposed to blacks as a child, I mistook their accents, vocabulary and mannerisms for a lack of intellect. Over the years, I learned the truth of it. Regional and racial differences are not a reliable indication of capability, although they are often assumed to be, especially by northern urbanites. Of course it doesn't help that movies faithfully reinforce these prejudicial stereotypes.
My advise to the author is to get out and meet people in the real world, and to resist the urge to assume things about them until she knows more about them than the oddities of their speech. Then perhaps she will realize that the women in the videos are quite smart enough to be culpable for their actions.
I guess Ms. Essig is anti-marriage (only if between a man and a woman), pro-abortion, a racist (only against white men) and feels that hard-working taxpayers need to spread their wealth to the poor and minorities. Sounds to me like Ms. Essig is a "conservaphobe".
I think Ms. Essig is missing the "point" with the ACORN videos. Mr. O'Keefe is not a racist by any means. He is exposing to the American people how much CORRUPTION and WASTE is made at the expense of hardworking, taxpaying people.
As for the women in the ACORN videos, they are just pawns of the RATHKE brothers. It's not the women who need to be fired, it's the top "NUTS" who need to be held accountable for the waste and corruption that exists in ACORN, SEIU, etc. Liberals may have thought that things were bad under Bush, but under Obama, we have a government who is systematically destroying our economy.

Middlebury has a reputation for being a good school, though VERY artsy, but i expected higher caliber logic from a professor from there.
It's very clear from Ms. Essig's post to the ACORN statement that these people think claiming THE GOAL of helping the "poor and oppressed" (read: non-white and non-hetero people, etc) trumps everything else; by any means necessary. What they better understand is that conservatives are polite, but we've had it and are sick of being taken advantage of continually. The election of the community-organizer-in-chief has cemented it. y'all are not going to get us to shut up anymore. And it's clear that you are not equiped to handle real counter-attacks from the right. What are these people going to do if a real "race" related issue rears it's ugly head. We all know that there are racists in the US, but why is it that everyone who disagrees with BHO carries that label? Is it just easier to shout "racist" than deal with the problem? Just another hypocrisy of the left, which expects business to be responsible for every transgression an employee makes and are often held liable because a business does not have a training program that tells the employee what they can and can't do, even if the issue is basic common sense. Yet, "social justice" organizations such as ACORN are not held to the same standards. Chances are that ACORN actively encourages such behavior.

It's amazing that people on the left can not see the truth when they trip over it. Two seperate offices and four different people gave advice in the wake of being told that multiple crimes are going to be committed with the financing gain through ACORN. By the way; why is the author so confident in what a "real" pimp dresses like?
I had a real WTF? moment while reading this. I swear, I thought I wandered over to Huffpo somehow. It's amazing how ideology has predetermined how this woman viewed the video. How can you possibly look at this and try to make those ACORN employees into victims? Oh yeah, you play the race card. You cry "entrapment." You do everything but expect them to take responsibility for their actions. You continue to marginalize the black community by suggesting that they need a scumbag organization like ACORN. Oh and you attack the character of the people who made the video (but not those that not only condone child prostitution, but abet the practice as well). Talk about morally bankrupt.

I do believe “Middlebury College” says it all. For those who don’t know, Middlebury College is one of those extremely high priced, private colleges located in a lovely semi-rural setting in mid-Vermont. Truly an elite setting in one of the “whitest” states in the country. With next to no contact with the “undesirables”, ie. the poor, non-whites, conservatives, etc. Here you can seclude your self from reality and enjoy your all natural granola and, comming soon to a co-op near you, Ben & Jerrys Breast Milk Ice Cream. Geez – get a grip lady, corruption is corruption no matter who the criminal is.
