Citizen Uprising Over Internet Regulation
by Lori DrummerThe growing American protest movement has met the Obama Administration’s effort to regulate the Internet, as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has been flooded with almost 50,000 individual demands to stay away from their broadband.

Just as a majority of Americans now opposes the Administration’s increased spending and government intrusion into the free economy, a clear majority opposes the President’s move to assert authority over the Internet. According to a recent Rasmussen poll, 53 percent of Americans oppose FCC regulation of the Internet – and only 27 percent support such regulations. In fact, support for Internet regulations has plunged by 22 points just since June 2008.
Monday marked the close of the reply comment period at the FCC for the network neutrality rulemaking proceeding, and the opposition to Internet regulation could not be clearer. Traditionally, a “reply comment period” for a “Notice of Proposed Rulemaking” at the FCC attracts little attention by the American public, but this blatant power grab – and the attempts to regulate the Internet like a telephone line in the 1930s – has made thousands stand up and take notice.
In January, at the close of the initial comment period, over 32,000 American citizens filed official public comments with the FCC opposing network neutrality. Then 48,000 individuals voiced similar concerns for Monday’s reply comment period.
That’s over 80,000 voices saying “no” to bigger government. Yet the FCC plunges on.
This powerful outcry should make FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski and President Obama take notice – because if they proceed with what even the Washington Post editorial page has called a “naked power grab,” it will spark a battle in the courts, the Congress, and the ballot box.
Whatever the Left’s assurances that they are only trying to act in the “public interest” to ensure “consumer-protection” and “non-discrimination,” the American people understand that regulation begets regulation, and taxation begets taxation.
The radical agenda of government takeovers should not surprise anyone. Regulating the Internet is an extension of the “government knows best” approach of the Administration and mirrors its tactics in other policy arenas, such as health care, cap and trade, union card check, and even college loans.
It remains to be seen whether Chairman Genachowski – a personal friend of President Obama’s – will heed the federal courts, the American people, and the record of public comments in its docket. Undoubtedly, he is listening to industry friends and moving full steam ahead with an effort to reclassify the Internet as a “telecommunications service” for the sole purpose of exercising control over it.
In fact, Free Press, the far-Left organization largely responsible for creating the “network neutrality” demands, has put a “full court press” on the FCC to move quickly to self-generate network management and network neutrality regulatory powers.
Even those who trust in the good intentions of this Administration should bear in mind James Madison’s admonition that “enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm.” If the Internet can be controlled by your political friends, then it can likewise be controlled by your political enemies.

What part of Obama is a Communist do people not understand?
Can we just start ignoring these insane, unwanted regulations. They can't arrest us all. And if we go Galt, they will have nothing to regulate.
This is about "people control" straight up and it will eventually lead to a "newspeak" and thought control totalitarian society worldwide.
Can you say Venezuela? Say it with me…. V E N E Z U E L A. Maybe President Obama learned something from that book that President Hugo CHAVEZ gave him.
The ultimate uprising will take place 11/2/10, we’ll have an opportunity to personally thank Barry.
We need to stay vigilant in these dangerous times we live in. Not since the Cuban Embargo has our Nation and way of life been in such peril. The Marxist FCC is poised to take this New Frontier of the 4th Estate away from us.
Net Neutrality will give the internet to Big Government and take it away from the "people" unless an army of Davids keep after their respective Washington Represantives
Nevermind the FCC; the FTC is going to get regulatory control. http://bit.ly/auAN1X
Since the Inernet is the medium most responsible for keeping tabs on what the politicians do, it's only natural that the Obama administration would want to control it. Since I'm not a fan of this administration, I'm quite certain that my little blog would be silenced.
BTW, a Constitutionalist would consider the Internet to be free speech, and any effort to restrict it would be seen as a violation of the law.
It is a remarkable phenomenon. We are seeing that, as folks learn more and more about the consequences of government regulation, they support it less. In response to the public's frustration with government intervention, instead of changing tack, the government just sells its agenda harder.
This is very telling.
This indicates that we do not have elected representatives. As things stand, the people in power are elected officials, with no interest in representing anyone but their dear leader.
It's upside down.
Going Galt is the last resort but it is one that will be made if we find there are too many Americans on the dole.
If in November the conservative turnout is not strong enough or there is any inkling of voter fraud then we have 2012
If BO and Congress have not changed by then, then during that next four years going Galt will be the new Tea Party mantra.
WIth this in mind.
If we do not all hang together we certainly will all hang separately.
A funny thing happened on the road to serfdom………the unfettered flter of information via the internet.

The above statement counts for nothing in the Administration of Teleprompter Jesus. We'll do what we're told when we're told because Liberals know better. Surprisingly, so many tech sites I visit – who bashed Bush for every kind of intrusion imaginable into their personal lives, now cheer Obama's efforts to have government-controlled internet. Fools.
Progressive new think: No means Yes. That the populace opposes something the administration is planning to do by an overwhelming margin only indicates the the true progressive that they are on the "right track". After all, the progressive has all the education and training necessary to decide what is "right" for the citizens. The poor benighted citizens need someone to make all the right decisions for them.
Saw some dweeb on Fox News last night from California who wants McDonalds to remove the toy from their Happy Meal. Seems the toy only drives children insane and makes them crave more Happy Meals. Years ago when the government became involved in attacking Big Tobacco, some warned that one Big Tobacco had been effectively neutered they would come after food. People laughed at this. After all, tobacco was a killer. Well folks, they're back!
Enjoy your fatty foods while you can! It can only get worse.
Does this mean no more internet porn? I guess the strip club industry might benefit from this legislation.
When will a liberty minded country invade the U.S. and spread democracy and freedom?
Mr. Knoxs, liberty minded countries stick to themselves, you can't provide freedom with force and control.
Obama: "I think, at some point, you have enough megabytes"
I have to start a comprehensive list one day…Thing the Left Does That Backfire. I have listed several, most related to alienating voters, but in this case it is different. They want to impose a version of the Fairness Doctrine. It is funny how they view such things. Fairness or neutrality to them means a monopoly. When the discussions surfaced in the Clintonian era the talks centered on talk radio. The goal was not fairness or equal air time, but an attempt to stiffle the voice of opposition. Much like today, the left enjoys the adoration of main stream television news and print journalism. Talk radio is the only true outlet for conservative views aside from Fox. If the liberals were able to push such legislation/regulation through, they would be screaming for its repeal if they lose their majority in the fall, or the oval office in 2012.

Listen,Obama has a clear agenda and NO ONE is going to stop it,look how fast he's moving to get control of our entire system, the communist think they have us in the bag now and can do as they please.
It's too bad that a lot of these protesters are part of the libertarian anti-copyright movement (AKA "software pirates", i.e. thieves).
One gets allies where one can, I guess. Down with Internet regulation!
why would Obama take notice of 80,000 when he has already proven that he could ignore 180,000,000?
How can we stop all of this? These people have been cackling since Nancy first shook the gavel at the ceiling and screamed to the roaring crowd, (paraphrase) "Now I have the power. Can you feel the power?" Now they are desperate to set up their matrix that we all must live in. I have become the oppressed. I want my freedom back.
Problem is… if they fail this time around, they'll just try again next year/month with a different approach (slide it into some other bill that nobody reads until after its passed, or re-word it like they're doing to Puerto Rico). We win for now, but will be bamboozled later… COME ON NOVEMBER!!!!! COME ON 2012!!!!!!
I don't believe in the 2012 prophecies, but I DO believe NObama will pull some crap to make it come true.
I see he is crazy scared of the internet. It is the vehicle for the non state run media. Yesterday we learned that the conservatives may want people to show ID or driverslisence at the polls. He is very afraid of losing if he can't have voter fraud.
must be the lost art of thinking
Sounds like you have no understanding of what net neutrality is, or what it would mean if broadband providers are allowed to pick the winners and losers in the internet age. Congratulations: You're an ignorant shill.
Unfortunately I'm pretty sure he is fulfilling another book of prophecy…
It's great that the public is engaged enough to flood the FCC with protest letters. But in the end, as with the marxist healthcare plan, it will be to no avail. We are being assaulted by our own government and nobody seems able to stop it, no one.
God bless (and PLEASE help) America as we work to throw off the yoke of tyranny!
More government regulations, interference in free-market enterprize, and taxation. And we're ignorant.
Go figure.

Sounds like somebody here has no issue loosing his/her freedom of speech/expression online. Since, if government gains control to regulate the internet like how other countries already do, you cant say or do what you want online whether it be a business or individual. This is alot like the Fairness Doctrine used for radio and that would force radio stations to obey what the government says. In other words, we will end up loosing the free press although we could loose the leftist organization "free press".
Just put it simply, dont let the dirt bags in the white house and capital hill control our freedom of speech/expression. We need to stop this europeanizing of america.
NOT RACIST, NOT VIOLENT, NO LONGER SILENT
You keep on gloating for more big government expansion. I hope one day soon you'll choke on it.
If they take away our voice, then we'll have no choice but to resort to action.
When I posted my pictures of the Tax Day Tea Party on my blog, and linked it to a national blog.
When I went through my hits later in the day, and you would be amazed at the number of .mil,.gov, and other more stealthy DOD hits.
Big Brother/Sis is watching, and watching all the time.
Free market, huh? Good luck starting your own internet business when network providers get to decide what audience you can and cannot reach.
Oh, the upper midwest can't reach your site, huh? Pay the toll. Uh oh, you can't serve your customers at the reasonable speeds they expect from today's internet, because ISP's have artificially limited you. Pay the toll. Can't reach customers on their smartphones? Pay the smartphone premium. Want to post a tweet? Standard text messaging rates of $0.15 apply. Want to watch youtube? $3.99 a month please.
Individuals and small business wouldn't be able to provide any basic web service because reasonable bandwidth would be prohibitively expensive. Does that sound like it would be good for small business?
You seem to think that, no matter what the situation, government regulation would be bad. In the real world, there are no absolutes, and everything is a balancing act. You don't understand the issue; you just are an idealogue.
word
Orwellian logic has twisted your understanding. You've been duped.
So instead you want a corporation to decide what you can and can't do online instead. Good luck voting them out.
Net neutrality is about keeping ISP's in check. It has nothing to do with limiting individuals; if anything it preserves our freedom to access any arbitrary internet service neutrally (ie without being stopped or limited by a corporation)
Yeah, we need to share the megabytes; spread them around equally so we can attain social justice.
You have no idea what this issue is about and what is at stake. It's not about your freedom of speech… Comcast and AT&T could care less about your internet rants. It's about competition and their ability to crush it.
I will allow one government control of the internet and that is porn! As far as I'm concerned there is no need to have unregulated porn on the internet! All a kid has to do is do a Google search and all the dirty porn videos come up on the monitor! This is most certainly not necessary and should cause a society to evaluate the need for this!
I'm sorry, but the issue has nothing to do with porn, or censoring the internet at all. It's about whether or not Network providers and ISP's can be allowed to stop or slow down traffic to a given site.; whether they can be allowed to act as gatekeepers to the internet.
Not that you would know that from reading Lori's article; she makes no attempt to clarify what the issue even is. It's harder to get people angry when they actually understand this issue.
Who the hell said anything about taxation? You don't know what you're talking about.
a goverment big enough to give you all you want is big enough to take all you have!!!
are you thinking of retireing? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-Saafo28tM
You stop it by winning an election. They have consequences.
Welcome to the consequences…
Send your letters to your representatives in the congress. That is were the FCC will direct them.
No. it has nothing to do with porn, censorship, or individuals. It's about regulating ISP's to ensure that they do not decide who can access what service.
Your inalienable right to porn will not be infringed upon by net neutrality.

Net neutrality is not about censorship. You have confused this with another issue. But don't feel bad, most of the people on this post have made the same mistake.
[...] By Lori Drummer BigGovernment.com [...]
So, you have a problem with private businesses charging what the market will bear? Economics FAIL.
Didn't a federal court tell the FCC "No" already? If so, wouldn't they be in contempt of court if they proceed with their plan? Can't the head of the FCC and/or others be arrested and jailed? Just wondering.
"They can't arrest us all."
You want to bet on that? It's called martial law and it is absolutely doable. Don't think for one instant that law enforcement or the military will take the public's side in any of this. It won't happen.
When you have 67,000 pages of tax code headed by a Tax Cheat you have no moral authority to impose these rules on anyone else.
When you have bills signed into "law" by a former Senator who was born a subject of the British Crown you have no legal standing on anything.
It's only a matter of time Obama is going down, the only question is how many others in Washington want to go down with him.

I'm starting to wonder if he thinks he's the Mahdi…the "hidden Imam". It's amazing to watch the words of Revelation come into being right before our eyes. We've got front row seats for the whole show.
No, I'm against big business being the ONLY business that can afford to have a meaningful presence on the internet.
It's amazing how hard people will fight against their own self interest.

Do you have any idea how crazy that sounds to outsiders like me? I am troubled and doubt you're using logic to reach your conclusions about politics
Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a damn!
Maybe I should donate to Estonia instead of the GOP?
No I don't want to bet on it. I pray His Will will lead us.
So, after invested billions of dollars in infastructure are you telling me you don't have a right to see that most of your customers are not harmed by a small minority of users? If so, you are saying that whatever business you might have, you no longer have any say in how you would like to run your company either. This is Fascism, straight up.
Also: I have Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, Clear Wire & Sprint competing in my market. Now if one starts restricting bandwidth unjustly the others will pounce on them. So your justification fails the test.
You are on the inside of a religious mindset. With all due respect, believe what you want. That's what america's all about. Kudos to you.
However, as an outsider of that group, I would never be won over by such an argument. To me, it calls your whole thought process into question.
God answers all prayers. Mostly He answers \”No.\” The Good Lord helps those who help themselves. Time to \”gird up\”, I think. Chance favors the prepared mind.
Uh-huh. You really think providers are going to cut their own throats by
pricing themselves out of the market?
Whoever exercises power will use it to promote their own interests. For
busnesses, that's making money. For government, however, it's acquiring
more power.
Amen my friend.
You couldn't possibly ignore it because you're not an internet service provider. They're not talking about regulating individuals or limiting your first amendment rights in any way.
Funny you should mention that. In the 2000's the government gave a lot of money to the ISP's to improve internet speeds and expand coverage. It never happened; they just ate the money. Has your internet gotten any faster in 10 years?
Interesting thing about ISP's: They're local monopolies. I couldn't switch providers if I wanted to. So how exactly is competition keeping them in check? It's like the railroads in the 1800's. They can limit traffic all they want if they all decide to do it.
I want the internet I paid for with my tax dollars. If the government is subsidizing telco's, then the government should be able to enforce fair commerce on that network.
[...] » Citizen Uprising Over Internet Regulation – Big Government [...]
Yeah, from less then 1.5mbs to anywhere between 16-24 mbs today and going to 100mbs in the near future.
and if they are local monopolies (not in my market) it's from Gov. intervention not the free market forces that should be in place in your local market.
Gov. should not give any tax moneys to businesses – 1) it's not theirs to give, it's MINE, besides if people have a need then by that definition they are willing to pay for it and enterprising people are willing to compete for the most effective ways to provide it. 2) it quickly perverts into crony capitalism which crushes competition and game changing innovation.
And you ignored my point that if Gov can ignore property rights and run businesses down to this level of minutia then why have private companies at all? Hey, lets just grab all capital, land, resources and property call this a dictatorship – or is it too soon to admit that yet?
[...] » Citizen Uprising Over Internet Regulation – Big Government [...]
Obama and his FCC admire the Iranian and Chinese control of the internet so much, they want to be just like them so they can crack down and persecute the little old ladies protesting with the Tea Party people.
What a bunch of commies running this country. Where are the pukey ACLU types that always scream about invasion of privacy and intrusion in to the private lives of Americans??? There's never been a more fascist president than this one and they are silent.
I'm always up for a good Obama bash, but don't forget the FCC has been trying to get their hands on the internet since before Obama. The previous chairman was just like this new "communist" one.
Tea Partiers: When the Fabian Socialist RINOs take over, please don't fall back asleep.

Actually, there was somehting in the kool-aid Chavez gave him…
I hope all of this comes back to haunt the Democratic Party for the next 100 years. They have lost all credibility. Never again will Americans be able to trust such a party without a great deal of suspicion.
Don't be fooled by this argument. Net neutrality is not about big government vs. individual internet freedom. It is about regulating the internet service providers who want to use their market position to limit competition.
For example: Google has a vision of an internet "cloud" that would change computing as we know it…. make it as indispensable as our power grid is today. But to do this they need high speed broadband connections that are a hundred or even a thousand times faster than what we have today… The ISPs feel it is their right to control who gets access and at what speed. One approach encourages innovation and the other stifles it. No need for fast internet if one of the gatekeepers gets to dole it out based on their competitive advantage.
I'm not saying that Google's vision is any better than one of their competitors. They are a huge player in the internet market place and they too bear watching. But we must have oversight to ensure a competitive market.
What these Progressive fools don't realise is that the internet is a safety valve and a way to vent public frustration. Take that away, and anger will reach critical mass.
