The Democratic Double-Standard on Race: I’ve Lived It
by Lurita DoanIsn’t it finally time for the behind-closed-door racial slurs to die? If our legislators truly do represent the people, then, how is it possible that in this nation, with so many people, of so many different ethnicities and races, an individual could be castigated for accented speech or the texture of their hair or the color of their skin?

I was born in 1958, at the cusp of one of the biggest change in our country’s ideology– the civil rights movement. But, six years later, desegregation had still not infiltrated all aspects of our national society and in Louisiana, it had had almost no effect at all.
As a six year old, desegregation had little impact, until the day that Bobby Kennedy came to our house and, sitting at our kitchen table, convinced my dad to “try once more” and apply to have me attend an all-white, private school in New Orleans. That day changed my life.
Despite the hardships, the racial slurs, the ethnic isolation, I have never regretted my dad’s decision, for it gave me a superior education, a toughness, a confidence, despite name-calling, in my own worth as an individual, and a few good friends.
My presence elicited mixed reactions. There was confusion —”she’s a really “light-skinned” Negro. There was relief — “she sure doesn’t sound like a Negro.” There was even surprise — “she sure is smart, who would have known?”
My dad assured me that these were the kinds of comments made by people who had pre-existing prejudices handed down through generations of ignorance and isolation; that these opinions would change over time. My dad had had quite a bit of experience in this area. And my dad was right.
Or so I thought.
Imagine my surprise, over forty years later, when serving in public office, to be attacked, to hear these same kinds of racial slurs–web pages discussing my hair and its texture, bloggers debating whether I was actually Black, or “Black enough”, given my accent, and comments such as ” Lurita Doan can’t be African American… She’s obviously Caucasian!” appeared fequently.
Of course, at the time of Rep. Henry Waxman’s attacks on me, there was a very contentious, presidential race, and certainly, many on the Left had a heavy investment in the “Black” candidate, Barack Obama. So personal attacks against a Black conservative by Waxman and other Democratic leaders were, perhaps, the inevitable, partisan attempts to discredit anyone viewed as a threat.
But are Harry Reid’s racial slurs so very different from Congressman Waxman’s efforts and show-trials where he especially singled out Black women in leadership position in the Bush Administration. going well past honest policy debates, into personal attacks and character assassinations?
Democrats have always wanted to be seen as the political party for Blacks–and any participation by a Black woman in the opposing, Republican party, was viewed as a threat.
Reading about Senator’s Harry Reid’s derogatory comments about our President, commenting on President Obama’s voice, accent and skin color, I realized that race issues had entered a new era in America.
Black Americans that deviated, in any way, from the strict conformity of an out-of-date stereotype are singled out for derision. If you’re “light skinned” (like me and many other African-Americans), spoke in educated tones, or, heavens-to-Betsy, were a conservative Republican, the racist attacks came swift and sure.
Rigid orthodoxy has been coupled with blinding hypocrisy. When Senator Trent Lot made some inappropriate remarks on race, he was hounded from office. And yet, when Senator Harry Reid voiced narrow-minded, inappropriate racial stereotypes, the response from the very same posse, that pursued Trent Lott with pitchforks and glee, is now far more conciliatory.
The unmistakable message here is that there are two very different standards. Democrats are free to pursue, demean and slander Black Americans (especially those that are not willing to toe the ideological line that has been dictated by party elites). At the same time, racist notions and indiscretions from Democrat Senators like Reid are to be forgotten.
Almost fifty years after Reverend Martin Luther King Jr’s triumph, celebrating the “content of our character“, rather than the “color of our skin”, it is clear that there is still room for improvement. Let’s all encourage Senator Harry Reid to do better, refrain from making inappropriate, racial remarks and applaud his recent efforts to apologize to the President.
However, if Reid is to truly come clean, he needs to put some effort into dismantling the hypocrisy of race-based attacks from the Democratic Party that Reid himself helped to construct. An apology to President Obama is good first step.
But, if Reid really wants to get race issues behind him, he will now quickly follow up with a similar apology to folks like Clarence Thomas whom he was quick to demean and portray as a mental midget. Reid’s rhetoric, five years ago, seemed to suggest that Black Americans, such as Judge Thomas, that were unwilling to wear the Democratic straight jacket of conformity, were stupid, “embarrassing”, and unworthy of holding high positions in government.
But, Harry Reid is no Robert Kennedy. I am afraid that anyone hoping to see some honest contrition from him and an admission of racial stereotyping is going to be disappointed. More likely, Reid will reinforce the existing, de facto standard, that racial comments from any Democrat are lamentable, while, at the same time, Reid and other Democrats will continue to be hyper-partisan.
Democrat leaders like Reid, Waxman, Pelosi are essentially stating that only Republicans (and especially conservatives) are guilty of racism or ever make inappropriate and demeaning remarks. Meanwhile, Black Americans like Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court, Condi Rice at the State Department , or even me while at GSA , are attacked as Uncle Toms and racial sell outs, who, because we hold contrarian ideas are not really Black at all. This deep-seated hypocrisy is not just a double standard, it is an outrage.
More likely, as another election year approaches, Reid and his cohorts will reinforce the double-standard, and attack any Republican that even hints at race, while simultaneously condoning Democratic attempts to demean, to attack, and to disparage any Black American that escapes the Democratic straight jacket of fealty and orthodoxy.

We will never all be considered "equal" until certain people within races stop playing the "victim" card and we do away with political correctness.
I don't care what your skin color is or who your parents were. Are you a decent, law abiding, USA loving American? If so, then we are on the same team. Life is not fair. The sooner people of all races accept that fact, the better off we will be.
Sad and disgusting. (Reid)
The antiquated racial stereotypes held by Reid and other Democrats are more than offensive, considering the fact that they claim to represent all black Americans and every other minority. They are getting away with using the black population for elections, all the while berating them behind closed doors.
And to think, this is the comment that Reid let slip with other people around, who knows what kind of racial poison comes out of his mouth behind closed doors.
This is a great article. Thank you.
The real racists are those that think any ethnic group cannot achieve without "special help and laws to protect them" that in reality keeps those segments of society down and fed on the government spoon.
It's astounding that to be Black one must toe the Left Leaning line. As democrats deem themselves the mercenaries and or saviors to the Black population they arrogantly play the race card whenever they feel it's necessary. The three biggest racists, (not to mention criminals) are The Rev. Jackson, Rev. Sharpton and the Rev. Wright. Now we can add that little pip-squeak from Nevada to the list. Socialist democrats have been 'fixing' the poverty issue and equal rights biases for the last 60 years. It's funny not much progress has evolved from their efforts…..it's because it's a sham. Let's face it, the Democrat Party has no compassion for the minorities , as much as they claim….methinks they protest too much.
Do you think that Affirmative Action has run its' course? After all, we do have a President of color but, maybe he ain't jive enough!!
Next President of U.S. must be a dark skinned, dirty Democrat speaking the "Negro dialect" that is not "articulate". Yeah, Democrats!
The progressive movement has always been extremely racist. The left has been on the wrong side of the issue of equality and opportunity since before the civil war. Policies designed to keep minorities poor and segregated are always backed by the left under the disguise of "helping".
We will never be considered "equal" because everyone but white men get special benefits and considerations ONLY because of the color of their skin. Affirmative action set back race 30 years. Democrat policies create plantations today, some call them inner cities, but it's a plantation.
It's 2010 and liberals still believe they know better than the black man or the Hispanic man and need to take care of them, and feed them, and heal their wounds, and pay their rent, and raise their children…
Harry Reid has made a huge political mistake. I'm shocked that the Demoncrats are rallying around him in a show of support. I can't go making statements in my neighborhood like that let alone ones that the nation can see. The Dems. have always been a racially charged party whether their agenda is polarized pro so-called minorities or back in the early 20th century a bunch of racial bigots. (Everyone born here is an American period.). More than apology is needed when Tea-Party goers such as myself have been called racist since I don't drink the communist kool-aid. Why didn't dingy Harry just pull out his old KKK outfit & go over to Byrd's house & practice burning crosses in his backyard. In fact I'd bet they would even invite BO over for a beer.
You know what I think is the difference between a white Democrat/Liberal and white Republican/Conservative on the topic of race?
White Republicans/Conservatives,in general, believe all other races are just as capable; equals. They fight against special and preferential treatment for specific groups and more towards breaking down the walls that can disadvantage all walks of life.
White Democrats/Liberals seem to feel that non-whites need their help. Most are incapable of success without their help. They feel sorry for them and are motivated by their perceived guilt. They truly believe they are helping people that are "unfortunate" and think they have the moral high ground on race because of it.
The next time you hear a liberal rant about racism, listen to them and see if what they are trying to tell you sounds more like a principled argument for civil rights or a parent protecting their helpless child.
A proper education is the answer. Once these folks have a true understanding of America, her history, and what makes her unique and still great, they will be insulted by what the democratic politicians offer them.
Dang, you can look into Harry Reid's eyes and see the evil there. That picture tells a lot. His soul has long been sold. He's just rotten to the core inside.
Wow…I guess it's a good thing Miss Doan never worked for ACORN or she'd REALLY be a victim of it…the double-standard on race that is considering she's be "recebing all dat money from da gubment!"
Just like the reaction to the Trent Lott "…he should have been president…" statement was extremely hypocritical, so is the reaction to the Harry Reid "Negro dialect…" statement. However, I do find the double standard expressed by Democrats an excellent example of just how they treat their most loyal voting bloc, the African American voter. I hope they keep Harry Reid as Democrat senate majority leader, maybe this time Black folks will finally awaken to the realization of how niggardly they are treated by the Democrat Party. Al Sharpton, you make a wonderful HOUSE N. Your tap dance on Fox and Friends this morning was extremely nauseating.
As Chief Justice John Roberts said, "The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race."
http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/John_Roberts
Untill the Goverment at all levels removes race from all form's like the census et al: we will never get away from race, The Black congressional caucus should be dispaned as they have no more or any less rights then non-blacks in America.. I would also suggest that the question of race be removed from all employment applications and remove all quota's of race from bussiness.. We as a nation can never move away from race as long as politicians are willing to make victims of any race to further their goals !!
Why do we still ask these questions when we are supposed to be equal?? In fact I believe it is unconstitutional and has only harmed this country rather then move it forward..
I wonder if Miss Doan is intelligent enough to remember that the Democrat Party at that time was controlled by Conservatives? That's helping the old double-standard cause eh? What online community college we pull her from?
Great book that relates to this: Political Emancipation: Observations of A Black Man Who Rejected Liberal Indoctrination. Andre Harper
Reid is a dope regardless of what he says.
In our effort to become color blind and Ebonics tolerant, the pendulum has swung toward the apex of political correctness. The American public thought it was more important to elect a black man, knowing his Marxist bent than facing the fact that Obama's race wasn't the real factor at all.
But it became the only factor in the end.
You elected Obama because his is a Negro believing it would erase the bonds of slavery we still bear.
Now we pay the price.
Can we finally get back to electing competent leaders regardless of their skin color or sex?
Obama must go, not because he is black, but because he is dangerous and is killing off the American way.
The biggest reason this man is being defended right now is because he is in the middle of the reconciliation of the healthcare bills. If he wasn't this man might have been thrown to the wolves. He is already going to lose his district so as soon as hew finishes his term he will be no use to the communist machine anymore. He end up in some random Washington think tank & you'll see a blurp from him from time to time.
therein lies the problem….for the last few decades the left has been removing the true America from the history books and replacing it with politically correct language and views of the left….
Reid will stay and continue to prove to the world that the dems do not care about anything but party.
The next time a Republican makes the same mistake the stupid party will force him out.
Remember…Make your enemies live up to their own standards.
The dems have no standard of behavior so they are free to do and say what they like while the stupid party marches into oblivion with a clear conscience.
How nice…You don’t like it? Stop being stupid.
I find it particularly ironic that a Southern Republican (given the stereotype of bigots, thus a likely participant), who makes a vague statement that is construed as racist (he never directly said anything against blacks), is vilified and chased from the arena with pitchforks, largely by his own party. Meanwhile, a Western Democrat (theoretically the champion of the poor oppressed minorities and colorblind with respect to race), makes a blatantly racist comment and is treated with "aww-shucks he didn't really mean it" by his colleagues and the media…
I was watching the datline thign last night and the PIMP guy that beat his women says he was innocent .. his only crime was being BLACK !!!! You go Obama !!! They love you !!!
The women had two black eyes and her jaw was almost broke .. he got 5 yrs probation !!!!
Great read Lurita, Go into the Chicago neighborhoods where you find the greatest poverty, crime, drug use abandon buildings and they all have one thing in common the unyielding support for the people who have victimized them the most. Namely Jesse jackson sr and jr, Louis Farrakhan,Rev Wright .From the pulpit they have used racism to enrich themselves. It's a great scam convince people that racism is keeping them down and pass the basket. Go look at the mansions and wealth these criminals have acquired .Tax free racism. If that scam does not work call the slumlords Val Jarret or Tony Rezko and see if they have some good property deals.

I have read countless articles like this. Has anything changed? Not really. There will always be folks who say things they can later regret if it suits their political objectives. And there will always be racism. But these little dances around the racism tree are kind of fun, I guess.
You are absolutely correct! They don't teach HONEST American history anymore, so HOW will anyone who attends public school ever know the truth!!???
I think that the joke behind "not being black enough" is just a taunt towards the idea that the darker a person is, in this country, the more they represent the minority. It is a jab at black candidates being used as gimmicks. It may be insensitive, but I am not certain that it is always racism. Different people groups have stigmas about them, and they are exploited from time to time. We have no strict guidelines about what racism constitutes. Just leave it at something that promotes irrelative superiority, or inferiority of a people group. So, something like simply pointing out that black people have bigger lips is not racism. Who says big lips are a liability? But, saying that black people are stupid is racism. Simple.
The question is if a person crosses a line of civility and demeanor. I for one am disappointed in the GOP's full on attack at Reid's comments. It would have been better to not make a big row of it, and let it fester on it's own. That is, if there was anything to fester; but now there will be no festering, no Democrats thinking hidden thoughts about Reid. The Dems are the ones with the salve, now, and it is a disappointing deviation in the news. I'd rather not waste time on it.
In fact, consider this. What if the Republicans made a point of playing it down from the beginning? That would have been the best strategy.
Racism is not racially exclusive.
We should start describing this writer in terms the left would understand and would paint them as who theY REALLY are: All BlackAmericans who do not conform to the approved left wing stereotype are RUNAWAY SLAVES FROM THE FEDERAL PLANTATION. The visible chains might have been removed a century ago, but the mental chains are just as binding. The left put them there and has too much to lose if they "let their people go".
While I find his comments extremly inappropriate, my first thoughts were – Reid was in a private conversation and he has the right to vocalize his beliefs. Secondly, if someone is a racist and we don't approve of their behavior they can be voted out of office. If the voters don't have a problem with Reid's views, then let him stand for the Democrats as their majority leader. All the cries of racism are just an extension of political correctness. In my opinion, Reid should not step down and Trent Lott shouldn’t have either. While I do agree that we should demand Democrats hold themselves to the same standards they hold everyone else, we need to also change the way we handle these situations. We need to find a way to use this to stop the political correct nonsense. Next time they try to neutralize someone over something stupid like they did to Lott or Imus, we need to not bow down to their demands and chime in on the calls for resignation. We need to circle the wagons like they are doing now. Do we have free speech or not?
You and your grammar are pathetic. You also have a warped sense of political history. By the way, Ms. Lurita Doan holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Vassar College and a Masters’ Degree from University of Tennessee-Knoxville. That should answer your question about whether she is "intelligent enough".
Besides the hipocrisy of the racial comment, the only reason the dems are not offended by Reid's comment is because they need his vote on health care. It is at least as hipocritical to blacks to dismiss the comment so they won't lose his vote. The dems also know that no matter how offensive they are to blacks, they will get their vote.
Stop being stupid? Than we would not have a Republican Party, come on!
off point , but very pointed…in the recent movie The Blind Side, a religeous conservative white Republican(Sandra Bullock) portays a real life Mother who takes in an abandoned Black youth and forever changes her own life as well as his. The story of Michael Orr is moving, what was intended as a slam at President Bush in one scene was over-shadowed by the Remark of The Husband, when he commented "who would have ever thought I would have Black Son befor I had a Democrat freind." Truth….Democrats speak of equality, Republicans live it.
Ask Black America how's that voting Democrat the last 40 yrs got ya?
Very well written article by someone who has LIVED through the racism! The way that history is being rewritten by the democrats, in charge of education, the truth will be hidden in the history books for a long time…until we take the power away from the ones rewriting history! I am amazed that the blacks in our society have no idea that the democrats are the ones who did NOT want to end slavery, did NOT want the blacks to have an education, and the fact that racism is put up with in the democratic party is ONLY for the votes! Why they can't see that the democrats want them enslaved by poverty and dependence on government care is beyond reason!
I'm no fan of Reid by any means, but its ridiculous that using the term "light-skinned" or noticing the plain fact that Obama doesn't speak in an urban Negro dialect unless he wants to are considered racist acts. That's incredibly thin-skinned. Negro itself is only considered racist when it suits the accuser (Is the United Negro College Fund a racist organization because it uses "Negro" in its name?).
The fact that racial victimology in this nation is tuned to such exquisite sensitivity that remarking on plain and obvious facts is equated with racism is near intolerable. The fact that we can't have an honest discussion about how Obama's appearance, race, and mannerisms affected his bid for the Presidency without fear of being called racist represents a greater threat to racial harmony than the fact that Reid mentioned facts that are obvious to everyone one of us. It's like we're in some weird real-life version of the Emporer's New Clothes — nobody dares to note publically that Obama is light-skinned, or to note that urban black dialect exists, is a barrier to black advancement and that successful blacks such as Obama don't use it unless it suits their purpose to do so.
Harry Reid is the part of the old racist mentality of Nevada until very recently. This is what he believes privately. Notice the congressional black caucus is not calling for his resignation…Double standard is alive and well and living in the Dem controlled Congress…Al Sharpton would be calling for any Republican's resignation and we all know this. They are a bunch of hypocrites..they use black people for their own political gains..and their progressive agenda which will destroy our country. Harry Reid, will be thrown under the bus soon. Why? Because they don't want him to lose big in 2010…it would be an embarrassment to this administration. So they get Harry to destroy our country; pass a bill that is a sham and a lie, and then he is gone..Notice what is going to happen. Beware people that this election in 2010 will be stolen by ACORN and their ilk…We have to be very aware. I believe the Dems see the political landscape now that the people will throw them all out, but before this happens, they will destroy and collapse the system…I fear what is coming before 2010. Read Cloward & Pivan philosophy…and you will see what is happening. They want to overwhelm the system.
When individuals like Ms. Doan, Ms. Rice and Mr. Sowell make it apparent that it is, indeed, possible to succeed and thrive in America regardless of skin color, the (Socialist) posse has to immediately ride out to kill that wolf before it frightens the sheep.
The Socialists know damn well that Americans with darker complexions have the same capacity to learn and thrive in our country as anyone. That is what instituted LBJ's policies in the 1960s – a plan that I am sure has exceeded expectation. Socialists don't feel sorry for anyone – especially black people. They still see them as property to be used and manipulated – only they are using your money to do it. Now, these same policies are affecting different populations of Americans – those who look to someone else to take care of them.
I find it scientifically fascinating that our president can flip a switch and speak Negro . The chameleon president.
There are quite a few that worked for ACORN…. AKA the ACORN 8. When the veil of hypocrisy was removed from their eyes, the corruption of the organization (think broad scope- ACORN -TIDES- UNIONS) became apparent.
The path to hell is paved with good intentions. It is truly sad that the well-wishing intentions of people were so easily usurped by those with more nefarious intentions. The first problem is the ignorant belief that "Coloreds" were incapable of helping themselves.
Once you subscribe to that belief (either as a giver of aid or recipient) it sets the framework for a CASTE system. Why should those in power ever have to change? With followers that believe they have to kowtow to their leadership, their power becomes absolute. Thier Mantra: CRUSH those who threaten this followership! Lull them into self imposed slavery by dependence on our entitlement programs.
Anyone who threatens to upset this applecart? Just follow Uncle Saul’s rules: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it
Of course Obama, Biden and Reid are racists. Look at the public record. Their words of hate are well-documented on the internet and in in black-and-white!
You're right that Obamacare is the CHIEF reason Reid isn't under the bus right now. If the final bill passes, expect Obama to start warming up the bus.
“I mean, you got the first main-stream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy … ”
~ Joe Biden, describing Barack Obama, in an interview (dated February 4, 2007) with Jason Horowitz of The New York Observer.
Everybody knows that part of the reason Obama won the Presidency is because he's black — little else can explain why black voters voted for Obama over Hillary in the Democratic primary in the very same proportion that black voters vote Democrat over Republican. But what I wonder is, how many white voters felt comfortable voting for Obama because he's half-white? That is, would the same number of white voters who voted for Obama have voted for him were he all-black rather than half-white? There may not be a significant difference at all, but I think it's an interesting question because I more than once heard a white person say after the election, "Why do they keep calling Obama 'our first black president'? He's white, too!"
Acually Syntax, I wonder if YOU are intelligent enough to recall the political party of the KuKluxKlan?
Hmmmm. Hint – It wasnt the Republicans.
Plagarized from Wikipedia:
Historian Elaine Frantz Parsons commented on the make up of the membership:
Lifting the Klan mask revealed a chaotic multitude of antiblack vigilante groups, disgruntled poor white farmers, wartime guerrilla bands, displaced Democratic politicians, illegal whiskey distillers, coercive moral reformers, sadists, rapists, white workmen fearful of black competition, employers trying to enforce labor discipline, common thieves, neighbors with decades-old grudges, and even a few freedmen and white Republicans who allied with Democratic whites or had criminal agendas of their own. Indeed, all they had in common, besides being overwhelmingly white, southern, and Democratic, was that they called themselves, or were called, Klansmen. (Parsons 2005, p. 816)
Historian Eric Foner observed:
In effect, the Klan was a military force serving the interests of the Democratic party, the planter class, and all those who desired restoration of white supremacy. Its purposes were political, but political in the broadest sense, for it sought to affect power relations, both public and private, throughout Southern society. It aimed to reverse the interlocking changes sweeping over the South during Reconstruction: to destroy the Republican party's infrastructure, undermine the Reconstruction state, reestablish control of the black labor force, and restore racial subordination in every aspect of Southern life. (Foner 1989, p. 425-426 )
Of course Obama, Biden and Reid are racists!
Their words of hate are well-documented, both on the web and in black-and-white.
That's Michael Oher.
Go Ravens!
They only way to truly defeat democraps is to have an awakening by the black and hispanic population that democraps dont care about them, that they only care about their vote so they can have power
Much as I have ZERO use for the slimeball in the White House, I don't actually hold that against him. My father, a Southerner born and bred, could shift from educated Standard American to Upper Carolina at will. Just call it bilingualism.
Do you remember the SNL skit where a prominent lightskinned black politician engaged in a skit about "lightskinned blacks, being smarter than dark skinned blacks? I think the same guy is now prez of the NAACP. I think this old SNL skit has been erased from memory, not political correct now.
The Rev. Jackson, Rev. Sharpton and the Rev. Wright make their living on Racism. Tragic as it is, the progressive democrats have always been among the most racist persons in the American Society. In fact, it was FDR who sold the public on Racism in the 30's. Gov. Wallace was a Democrat. How many Democrats have been members of the KKK and got away with it! This double standard is not new at all! You don't often hear that is was a Republican that freed the blacks from slavery, although he too was a progressive for big government! When I worked in New York, I worked with an Black Superintendent who said that after the civil war, the blacks had two ways to go, make it in America without depending on anyone else, or become dependent upon others, which was chosen at that time. As then, as now, the progressive movement makes their living baiting racism and it works for them!
PLEEASE! Obama is no more Black than he is white. To call him black and ignore his WHITE mother's side, is RAACIST!! Obama is simply Bi-Racial, as sooooo many American's are. EVeryone who continues to call him black are racist and opportunist, & maybe even selectively ignorant.
Again, this is history that the progressives want to ignore!
Again, tragically true, isn't it!
DITTO!
Like the Dem's learned from the MOB( which controls them): "Keep your friends close and your enemies even CLOSER!
Progressives as a group believe that the government and they "know what is best" for anyone who is "not one of them" . So that attitude makes them bigots. That bigotry manifests itself as racisim only because of color, but they fell that way about anyone who as I said is "not one of them".
That is what makes Politics a shame nowadays. Sharpton & Jackson along with someone local to me Quanell X, should not even be in political discussions. Race baiters con't continue this trend in my belief that they are setting back relations by bringing up 175 yrs. worth of the past. While History is of course important to remember to keep from making the same mistakes, at some point in time they leaders of race need to acknowledge all the success our country has made promoting equality. The world has decided we are warmongers because we react to situations where freedoms are in jeopardy in other countries. The world has given up on fighting the tyrannical powers across the globe. America hasn't distanced itself to the world, it's the exact opposite.
"Reid and his cohorts will reinforce the double-standard, and attack any Republican that even hints at race, while simultaneously condoning Democratic attempts to demean, to attack, and to disparage any Black American that escapes the Democratic straight jacket of fealty and orthodoxy."
They overplayed this card in 2009.
Spot on. The D party is what continues to enslave the black race. It is sad. I feel sorry for them.
Not to mention … progressives' history of promoting eugenics, which were blatantly racist and even genicidal in their goals.
Tell that to Trent Lott and Imus. They are still looking for their Free Speech rights…not that i approve of what Lott said at all. As for Imus? "Nappy Headed Hos" got him fired…please I've heard worse from 50 Cents.
Reid's comments show how he views blacks. Nothing more needs to be said.
Thanks for proving my point.
It is a double standard. Liberal standard bearers have a free pass to spout racist and sexist inanities.
It's not about equality, it's about power and control…

"I have a dream…that a man will be judged by the content of his character and not the color of his skin"
Be careful what you wish for…you just might get it!
It's sad to see the NAACP defend Reid, it reminds me of Gone with the Wind when the slaves go back to work at the plantation.
The Democrat party is our modern day plantation system.
In addition to his apology to Obama, Reid owes an apology to all Americans for thinking that we actually care how dark Obama's skin is or whether he "sounds black" or not. I found his comments to be more of an insult against white Americans, for presuming that we're all bigots who would only vote for a black man if he was light-skinned and didn't have an inner-city accent.
Democrats also wanted to take away blacks rights to keep and bare arms. All the Democratic party represents right now is the amassing of small groups, being led by a liberal voice (lucifer).

There is a difference between "accentuated speech" and "niggerbabble" ! just like there is a difference between and legal immigrant and an illegal one!
Let's get Harry to step down now, since he has no chance of winning in November.
Give a big time job with a liberal think tank consulting firm, paid for by us tax payers.
Give his senate seat to a moderate looking liar who will have a better chance than he would in the polls.
Harry has been promised something, Dod, too.
Stay tuned
Senator Reid also owes an apology to all the good Americans he assumes are racist.
Waiting, waiting….
Reid did not insult blacks with his comment, he insulted white Americans. Basically his statement was his projection that white Americans are too racist to vote for a darker skin black man. (I admit, I would not vote for someone who spoke Ebonics (aka "negro dialiect) – would you?) Thus, as all leftest do, he denegrates his white constituency because he, at heart, thinks the worst of them. Instead of aologizing to Obama and "black leaders", I think Reid needs to apologize to all white Americans. Of course, I could care less what Harry Reid says and hopefully he will have a lot more time to spend with his family this time next year.

As my friend Charles would tell me when I asked a question. He would tell me "First Im an american then Im black. Until we drop the hyphen nothing will ever change.
I should note that I am talking about your everyday Democrat/Liberal. I think many in their party, like Reid, still harbor some of the darkness from their centries of racial oppression.
I figured out why the Democrats don't like Republican black nominees for anything!!!!!
The Republicans always nominate blacks who aren't "light skinned" enough. Steele, Condi, Thomas they were just too dark-skinned for the Dems.
(not serious people)
The only racist are the ones who are distroying this country.
Here's a good litmus test on the hypocrisy of this issue: If Mr. Reid's comments were so acceptable, then perhaps he should ask Mr. Obama to regale us by delivering the State of the Union Address using his now famed "Negro Dialect." He and Madam Pelois could sit behind him in blackface too. I'll bet it would be a HOOT! Anyone offended? I rest my case.
Project much?
Thanks for proving my point spongebob!
THE DOUBLE STANDARD ON RACE EXACTLY!!!
America's lowest common denominator are never smart enough to disguise their true colors. Sh#t, they can't even spell it.
Ahh yes but worse racist comments were made by Bill Clinton and Blago and yet you don't care about them and their comments. You only care about the comments by Harry Reid who has a proven track record of being anything but a racist. Why only care about comments made by those still in office? Are these crocodile tears of yours because you care about Obama's feelings? Bulls#t!!! You only care about politicizing it for your own selfish gain and unfortunately for the 60,000 racist, anti-Semitic tea-baggers, The majority of America ain't dumb enough to buy it.
You could give two craps about race or anybody making racist comments. In the search option of this website, type in "ACORN" and preview those comments. They'd make your skin crawl.
What article are you commenting on? Political parties at the time of the civil rights movement are non sequitur to this article. They are not even mentioned. Try again.
I guess the Liberal-Democrats never mean what they say.
Maybe next time we fill out a form and get to the question of race, HUMAN is all we should write!
Great post, I hate that damn hyphen also.
Now I understand what the Dems have against Clarence Thomas and Condi Rice – they are not light-skinned enough for the Democrats.
under the CLOWARD-PIVENS strategy this is called PARTISAN TOLERANCE. It is O.K. for the socialist party to say things like this and not be condemned for it.
man bite dog…..dog bites man
Good post helldigger
[...] Update: “The Democratic Double-Standard on Race: I’ve Lived It”, Lurita Doan, the former administrator of the US General Services Administration, writes. [...]
Liberals are all about tolerance, equality and inclusion while the cameras and mics are on, until their actions, words and deeds expose them for their bigotry, racism and selfishness. They are the worst type of hypocrite.
And these race-baiting pseudo-civil right prostitutes have no more indignation towards Reid but would crucify anyone who does not go with their agenda. The pandering to the race deprived is a dog who won't hunt. So much for judging a person on the content of their character, then the color their skin. if that was done like MLK asked then I believe that the good Dr. would be horrified at these race-prostitutes that are in leadership positions in the black community, today.
ok Harry we know you have to defend yourself, but this is getting a bit ridiculous.
Well said!
Your implication is that the same conservatives that controlled the Democratic party in the 1950s and 60s are now controlling the Republican party. I disagree. Ponder the fact that when Ms. Doan first started school the Presidential candidates for the two major parties were Johnson and Goldwater.
Goldwater's candidacy, as you should know, is often considered the beginning of the modern Republican conservatism. Goldwater was no racist.
Political correctness has caused this double standard crap. Let's quit hyphenating americans and causing more division amongst us. Jesse Jackson,sr. and his crowd have perpetuated this thinking for political leverage. Progressives have a history in this area. Read "liberal facist" and you will see the pattern. Old Harry will never resign.
Double standard indeed:

There's millions of 'em!
You are correct sir but Miss Doan is a bald faced liar. Racism at that time was not restricted to a party and was pretty wide spread. For Miss Doan to exploit her own racism for political purposes by trying to define it to one specific party when she said absolutely NOTHING when Trent Lott or Don Imus was facing unnecessary persecution goes to prove that she could care less about racism and more about exploiting racism for political gain.
The difference between Reid and Lott is Reid has the full support of the President. Reid has a proven track record of not being a racist and actions speak louder than words. With Lott, he did NOT have any support of the Bush Administration and was thrown under the bus by Bush/Cheney because Lott was one of the first Conservatives to start questioning the Neo-Communists…oops, I mean Neo-Conservatives.
Reid has a proven track record of not being a racist. Yeah, as if he would have made the same comments about Clarence Thomas is Thomas were white. What Reid really said was that "Thomas must be dumb, because he is black and he is conservative,"
And, of course, should Reid survive this and make a similar comment in the future, he would still have this "proven track record of not being a racist" because this comment would have been expunged from his record.
Bless your heart!
You think found a way to try to twist this into an attack on the Tea Partiers.
What you don't get is that we are tired of everything being politcized. The point of my post was to find a way to stop this nonsense and let people stand on their own principles and actions. Reid, Clinton, Blago are examples of politicians who do what ever is politically expedient. They don't care about anyone but themselves. Try to do a little honest research on the Tea Party monvement and you would find out that we stand for Liberty – everyone's liberty and less government nanny state. You may find the nanny state OK because you agree with the current group in power. You may not agree if it were a different group. We don't want it regardless of who is in power.
"Try to do a little honest research on the Tea Party monvement and you would find out that we stand for Liberty" — I HAVE!!! Tea Partiers are Dr. Ron Paul's movement who didn't like the Socialist policies of Neo-cons any more than Liberals and are mostly comprised of Libertarians who see the reality that Conservatives and their anti-Conservative allegiance to Bush/Cheney caused this economic meltdown. Tea-baggers are the Neo-cons who hijacked the Tea-Party movement to A) create the illusion of having bigger numbers than they really did and B) to try to fool a majority of America that they themselves weren't America's most obedient lowest common denominator who's allegiance to the worst President in History. You can usually tell who these rocket scientists are by their allegiance to Sarah "GW III" Palin.
As far as thinking to twist, review the comments on these:

Every country deals with race differently. The two biggest mistakes in American history once one gets beyond slavery: (1) forced integration by court rulings – you can’t force people to want to associate with, get along with, or respect you; and (2) affirmative action – no matter how one looks at it, it smacks of unfairness and does not make people respect you.
What we have today are simply the long-term ramifications of bad racial policies. What is perhaps more fascinating is that many think that 50 years of legal integration has somehow negated or counterbalanced the treatment afforded blacks prior thereto.
The reason that society is incapable of addressing the racial issue is because we view it from a perspective which is not conducive to real analysis. We talk all around the fundamental, underlying reasons for racism, and make it an emotional issue. How does one expect to cure the cancer without focusing on the cancerous cells and the biological reasons for cancer? Focusing on the symptoms is an ineffective mechanism to employ. Racism serves a far more complex pragmatic function than we are generally willing to acknowledge.
Far more disturbing than Reid's comment itself is that elected officials, paid with taxpayer dollars, would spend valuable time criticizing Reid, or any other politician who just happened to say something offensive, inappropriate, or stupid, instead of tending to the important business of the nation. And this applies to members of ALL political parties.
And why do they do it? To advance the long-term positive and material interests of the nation? No. They're grandstanding for their political purposes, which are not necessarily in the interests of the nation.
They ALL should arguably be voted out at the next available opportunity. As for we citizens, we should never underestimate the power of laughter, and ignoring people.
The day is soon coming when minorities will realize what, exactly, the Progressives have done to them. Any minority that "goes off the plantation" of voting for the Dems because of welfare and affirmative action and special gimmes, will wake up and see that they are warehoused in public housing, kept in poverty and ignorance because it's easier to get their vote that way. Bring in a few minor, inexpensive pork projects, give them a little money before an election and Dems are a shoo-in.
By telling minorities that they aren't smart enough to get into good schools because they can't make the grades, by telling entrepreneurs that they cannot make their business successful without government handouts and special programs to give them business, whether they deserve it or not, has kept most of them grazing in their fields for too long. The minorities who have worked hard to get where they are quickly see the lie of the "Great Society". And they are labeled Uncle Toms for it.
Harry Reid is a racist, because if he was not those words would not have been spoken. He may be one that fights it within in himself, and that is understandable. This notwithstanding, to be the leader of the Senate one must be beyond that internal battle and truly believe that we should be judged by the "content of our character".
I am 47 years old and I grew up in a home without racism. I recently asked my father why that was, and he explained to me that in Yugoslavia he new several Africans that lived in Ljubljana. They were students and quickly became part of the fabric of their society. Some stayed and married and had families. Has anyone ever wondered why so many black soldiers stayed in Europe after the war? My father told me that when he came here and joined the US Army, his sergeant and captain were both black and taught him a great deal about America. His sergeant once commented that until my father spoke no one knew he is different while for them their skin color was hard to hide. My father made certain that we never treated others in that way.
Pithy AND Astute! Oh good sir you have cut me to the QUICK!
Please relent, I yield under your blistering assault!
