Obama’s Cronies: The Ex-SEIU Boss, Donor Dollars, No-Bid Contracts & Testing Anthrax Vaccines on Kids
by LaborUnionReportAccording to the Los Angeles Times, with the exception of existing in locked freezers in Russia and U.S. labs, the smallpox virus was eradicated in 1978. Yet, in a no-bid contract, the Obama administration has given $443 million of American taxpayers’ money for a “experimental smallpox drug” to a bio-defense company, Siga, controlled by billionaire Democrat-donor Ron Perleman and whose board ex-SEIU boss Andy Stern sits on.
According to the Times:
When Siga complained that contracting specialists at the Department of Health and Human Services were resisting the company’s financial demands, senior officials replaced the government’s lead negotiator for the deal, interviews and documents show.
When Siga was in danger of losing its grip on the contract a year ago, the officials blocked other firms from competing.
Siga was awarded the final contract in May through a “sole-source” procurement in which it was the only company asked to submit a proposal. The contract calls for Siga to deliver 1.7 million doses of the drug for the nation’s biodefense stockpile. The price of approximately $255 per dose is well above what the government’s specialists had earlier said was reasonable, according to internal documents and interviews. [Emphasis added.]
Although Siga’s questionable government deal may eventually mean $2.8 billion in revenues for the company, Siga’s profits would have to be split with its former partner in a failed merger, PharmAthene. In September, after years of litigation following a failed merger, a Delaware court ruled that PharmAthene was entitled to 50% of Siga’s profits from its ST-246 smallpox vaccines.
While the Times notes that there is no credible evidence that the threat of a smallpox outbreak is imminent and that the U.S. already owns enough vaccine to treat the entire population, the Obama administration’s ties to Siga become even more questionable, considering the recent recommendation to start experimenting with an Anthrax vaccine on America’s children.
A key panel of government advisers Friday recommended that the federal government sponsor a controversial study to test the anthrax vaccine in children to see whether the inoculation would protect young Americans against a bioterrorist attack.
The National Biodefense Science Board (NBSB), which advises the federal government on issues related to bioterrorism, voted 12-1 to recommend that the Health and Human Services Department move forward with a study aimed at determining whether the vaccine is safe and effective in children and identifying the best dose. Patricia Quinlisk of the Iowa Department of Public Health, who chairs the panel, was the only dissenter.

Nicole Lurie, the assistant HHS secretary for preparedness and response who requested the panel’s review, said officials would consider the panel’s recommendation, but she did not give a time-frame for a decision on whether to conduct the study. [Emphasis added.]
Interestingly the primary producer of the Anthrax vaccine is PharmAthene. While PharmAthene has reportedly spent millions lobbying in 2011, there is at least one call for PharmAthene and Siga to consider merging again.
While, according to USA Today, the Obama administration will not begin testing Anthrax vaccine on children for now while it resolves the ethical questions, it is noteworthy that the panel review for testing Anthrax vaccines on children was recommended by Dr. Nicole Lurie.
Lurie, an Obama appointee, is the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response at the Department of Health and Human Services.
According to the LA Times, Lurie has also been involved in the negotiations over Siga’s profit margin with the smallpox vaccine:
Negotiations over the price of the drug and Siga’s profit margin were contentious. In an internal memo in March, Dr. Richard J. Hatchett, chief medical officer for HHS‘ biodefense preparedness unit, said Siga’s projected profit at that point was 180%, which he called “outrageous.”
In an email earlier the same day, a department colleague told Hatchett that no government contracting officer “would sign a 3 digit profit percentage.”
In April, after Siga’s chief executive, Dr. Eric A. Rose, complained in writing about the department’s “approach to profit,” Lurie assured him that the “most senior procurement official” would be taking over the negotiations.
“I trust this will be satisfactory to you,” Lurie wrote Rose in a letter.
The Obama administration’s apparent willingness to award its cronies with no-bid contracts, as well as the seeming willingness to test questionable vaccines on children makes one wonder if this is what the President meant when he said he has the most open and ethical administration in history.

The FDA will not approve any drug or vaccine for kids until it is tested on kids. That's the way it has been since we discovered that kids are not the same as adults, especially their immune system. It is voluntary and requires the parents approval. The question here becomes 'How necessary is this?' Is there a clear and present danger? The parents will have to believe what the government intelligence sources say. And, now we can throw in the question "Who stands to gain from this…really? The kids or somebody else?

The people commenting on this site have been aware of and against crony capitalism for as long as I have been posting here. It is part of what the TEA Party protests are about. It appears that, like all Leftists–including the squatters, you confuse authority with those who supplicate themselves to that authority. No corporation can take over the govt without the govt saying "here ya go". If not for corrupt politicians, there would be no cronyism. The govt has the cookies and the power. The corps just buy it. Your outrage is just. The object of your outrage is misdirected. SIGA is, according to what I have read over the years, uniquely positioned to do this research. They own the methodology and the patents. I may not be current on that, but this is my understanding. That aside, once they put Andy on their board, they lost my confidence. Even if the company is clean, they have invited filth to come on in and stood in it. Consider also what just happened in a federal court in Texas. In this case, As described at http://LawInjustice.com , a Dallas business owner was involved in a civil dispute and paid millions of dollars to lawyers, and when he objected to additional fees after settling the case, they had a "friendly" judge, appointed by President Clinton, seize all of his possessions, without any notice or hearing, and essentially ordered him under “house arrest” as an involuntary servant to the lawyers and denied a jury trial. The business owner has been under this "servant" order for 10 months and is prohibited from owning any possessions, prohibited from working, etc..

The bottom line here is, corporations have a $ubstantial interest in deciding who gets elected and who does not get elected "let's help elect the people who will be friendly" and then "let's do what we can to hurt the people who are unfriendly". So they fund campaigns that help smear the "enemies", whether it's calling them socialist or paying for lies, and yes, according to the supreme court, corporate funding of political lies is just fine and dandy, after all, they are people and have rights that protect their political speech even if that speech is provably false.

The U.S. government, once crafted as a system that would serve the interests of the people, has devolved into a system of plutocracy where corporations control both the government and the people. Virtually every government regulatory department, for example, is now run by the corporations it is supposed to be regulating. Just look at the FDA, USDA, FTC, FCC, NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) and most other government regulatory bodies and you'll find a room full of politicians and bureaucrats who utterly disregard the People while prioritizing the financial needs of influential corporations.
If you can show me the motive for government wanting to take over corporations, I am all ears, clearly they are both to blame, but it is a broken system that is at the root of the problem and until we get the influence of money out of politics and replace it with people influence we will never see improvement.
Why not make campaign financing of elections public, and lobbying illegal? A congress person spends nearly half their time in officer raising money for reelection, wouldn't it make sense to have them work for the people for the entire term?
Especially when they get money. Clinical research volunteers (human guinea pigs) get paid. I doubt that there would be any shortage of children to experiment on when the person receiving the money is not the child being forced to receive the experimental drug, and especially considering the nature of liberal "mothers" like the skank who uses her babies to block traffic.

No. They would give the vaccine to children in good health with no previous exposure to anthrax, and then measure the changes in antibodies in their blood. They also monitor side effects. They cannot expose human research subjects to serious diseases.
Without conducting research studies with human subjects it would be almost impossible to develop and market new drugs and vaccines. Should they be able to market a vaccine that has not first been tested on limited numbers of human subjects? Should they be able to give a vaccine to millions of children that has not first been tested in a few hundred? Hopefully the anthrax vaccine they want to test on kids has already been thoroughly tested on adults.
Experimenting on kids is ethically questionable. Subjects in most clinical research studies get paid. It's one thing to test an experimental vaccine on an adult who is able to understand the nature of the study and its risks and make his or her own decision about participating. But children are another story. Someone else, like a parent, makes the decision for them and collects any money that is paid. Imagine a "mother" like the skank who uses her babies to block traffic being offered money to volunteer those babies for a research study.
I still say it's a bad idea. If the child has a reaction or there are serious side effects, that could effect the children for the rest of their lives.
Corporations by law must do everything within its legal power to produce profits for their shareholders and when they no longer achieve this mandate legally they resort to changing the laws, they do this by helping elect favorable candidates and by smearing unfavorable candidates, also spending millions on the bribery of our elected representatives.

It is the congressman, Senator, or president who spend nearly half their time in office raising money for reelection, it is the politicians who take high paying corporate positions after leaving office, it is the politicians who return the favor to the corporations by producing a favorable bill, tax breaks etc etc…

Yes. That's especially true with vaccines. Drugs can have serious and permanent side effects, but with most drugs, serious side effects will almost always resolve when the drug clears from the body. So if someone has a bad reaction you stop giving them the drug, and the bad reaction usually goes away. Most vaccine side effects will go away too, but vaccines are still different. They are intended, usually with a single dose, to cause a profound, irreversible change in your immune system. That's a really big deal. Once a vaccine has been given, there's no way to un-give it. If something goes wrong with your immune system's reaction to a vaccine it can be devastating and/or permanent.
The pols give to the corporations for power and money. It is that easy. I do not work to pay for someone to run for office. Otherwise, for once, I agree with you.

Yeah, a few years back, my father got a flu vaccine and had a bad reaction that caused him to lose his eyesight. It gradually came back over time, but it's still not completely what it was.

I am retired medical officer who served in the USAF for over 24 years. The anthrax vaccine is the poster-child of crony capitalism. Junk science and corrupt military brass helped propel the sole manufacturer of the anthrax vaccine into stardom. Unfortunately there is FACT that the anthrax has injured many and killed some while the manufacturer lavishly basks in the darkness of profit. Now they want to test it on kids. What a sick and corrupt country we have become.
