CWA Members Seeing Red After Union Bosses Blow Dues Money on Themselves
by LaborUnionReportThere’s an internal war going on in one of the Communications Workers of America’s largest locals, New York City’s Local 1101. Accusations of poor, absentee leadership has caused a group of rank and file stewards and chief stewards to start a campaign to reform the local. Now, the issues have involved the CWA International in Washington, which has placed a monitor over the local due to an investigation’s findings that revealed the local’s union bosses have been fattening themselves on their members’ dues.
CWA Local 1101 has nearly 7,000 members—most of whom work for telecom giant Verizon, as well as a handful of other companies. In 2010, local 1101 took in over $5.3 million in dues and agency fees. In addition, because New York is not a right to work state, Local 1101 is legally permitted to charge its members 1.9% of their pay as a condition of employment. If they don’t pay, the union can order them to be fired. As such, some members pay over $1400 per year in union dues to enable the local’s officers to rake in over $150,000 a year in compensation.
This is, perhaps, one of the reasons the local membership is up in arms over the alleged financial improprieties of a number of the local’s officers [via Labor Notes]:
A union-appointed prosecutor and financial investigator revealed in a report released March 24 that local officers and executive board members granted themselves $225 a week in unreceipted expenses—a cumulative cost of $156,000 annually for the union’s top leaders.
The expenditure, which was never approved by members, was explained as covering costs for gas, mileage, insurance, and tolls, although the local also paid out up to $37,000 a year in car service costs. Local leaders also gave themselves a 401(k) plan with a contribution equaling 15 percent of salary. The contribution was paid for by members’ dues—again without seeking member approval.
The investigators’ report criticized the “imprudent use of local funds,” noting that officers charged meal costs that averaged more than $225 per meal and hotel rooms that cost $600 a night during out-of-town conferences.
[snip]
Al Luzzi and Joe McAleer, Local 1101 vice presidents, and business agent Pat Gibbons claimed that officers routinely charged both the local and the company for 40 hours of work per week, and had done so for decades. CWA investigators tried and failed to access Verizon payroll records to settle the claim of double-dipping. Neither would officers turn over tax returns to settle the matter.
But the DOL, unlike the union, has the power to subpoena records. [Emphasis added.]
For all the money the officers were making, according to a CWA local reform website, union officers haven’t really been earning their keep.
The industry is changing. Our union is changing. But our E-Board is not. Most of them haven’t been on the job for decades, and they’re disconnected and out of touch.
We rarely see E-Board members in the shops. We file grievances and they seem to disappear after 2nd step. There’s little information available, let alone efforts to mobilize members and keep them involved. In response to management actions we would not have tolerated in the past we increasingly hear “They can do that” and “Times have changed”.
The accused officers, however, are not taking the International’s interference lying down. On April 1st, the officers announced on the local’s website that they would intention to rebut the International union’s findings.
The CWA Executive Board has reviewed the request for a Temporary Administrator and has determined that the imposition of a Temporary Administrator is not warranted. The National union has a number of concerns and has made requests and suggestions. The Local is fully cooperating with their requests and has implemented their suggestions. We are currently reviewing their summary of findings and will respond with our rebuttal in compliance with the CWA Constitution.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident with the CWA as the union has, for years, had trusted union leaders end up putting themselves ahead of their membership.

A Labor Union is corrupt!
I am shocked!! Corruption in a union? GTFOH! Hahahahahahahahahaha….
What?! Union corruption?! Say it isn't so… /sarc
It's a union. This is what they do.
Dig far enough, and I bet you find an organized crime connection.
Why people believe just because some one says "I'm on you side and I care" that they actually care is beyond me.
I don't think of myself as overly cynical, I just realize that like myself, self interest rules. I simply keep it in mind when dealing with people.
Hey… I smell something fishy!
What a shock!
Any body for Golf?
Union bosses (and the democrats who serve them) only have the best interests of the workers in mind – and there is some Florida swampland you should really invest in.
Part of a phone call that happened sometime, somewhere, involving some union,
…Yes that is almost 2 percent of your pay, but when you think about the benefits supplied by the union it is a great deal, but there are other things you have to do to…to make your work environment tolerable, you see we are having this rally coming up and we will be taking attendance…no transportation will be provided…no we will feed you lunch…there will also be illegal aliens in the porta-potty to wipe your butt when you are done…
Would it be crass of be if I LAUGHED OUT-LOUD!?!
What we really need to see is union workers who have been abused by their "leadership" to stage a WORK IN. Stop paying any dues, but continue to go to work, despite the union claim of power to have them fired.
They can call it an employee strike against union leader crimes.
"Dig far enough, and I bet you find an organized crime connection."
Dig far enough? I'd say just the stench of corruption is enough without "digging" at all.
Hey Ed, how much do you think Trumka makes? I bet he is laughing all the way to the bank. If the goonions die so does his meal ticket.

I laugh at the CWA Union workers here in Texas. I hear them talk about AT&T's CEO and how much of a travesty it is that he makes so much money and they make peanuts.. If someone is a CEO and the profit of his company is well in the billions more than likely the company is making that much because of his leadership. Why not reward him for it but also reward the people that make things happen as well..
Unbeknown to the membership, there's no doubt a 1001 ways to misdirect, or misuse union dues, and it's done on a daily basis by union top brass. It's a way of life, and will continue as long as unions exist. The key word, "exist."
Unions exist to pertetuate themselves and take care of their bosses. The welfare of the members is secondary. Only an idiot can't figure this out.
yeah, this definitely goes under 'junkyard dog bites intruder' headline banner…
Of course unions are corrupt. Are they MORE corrupt than, say, white collar crooks like Goldman Sachs? No.
They just don't have the shiny verneer to cover it. Bernie Madoff swindles hundreds of millions, and sits on his yacht with a munificent smile. SEIU thugs show at a rally and destroy property and assault those with whom they disagree. Their corruption is just 'in your face'.
Let's just say there are a LOT of bad people out there…
Head of the CWA local? I don't know. I work in the industry, but as an engineer I'm exempt from over time and unions. My guess is a whole lot more than he's worth.
Funny thing about modern liberals. They aren't real great about keeping an eye on the future. They're more 'in the moment' kind of thinkers.
This is what communists do. They say they're for the working class, and they're one of you, but then the party bosses always manage to get themselves sweet cars and gorgeous homes that workers could never hope to have, and the workers wait in the bread lines.
There's suckers for Communism in every generation.
I wish I made half of what Trumka makes. But if it means destroying my kids future, I'll pass.
Thanks 'Labor' for the website.
Can you say bend over and grab your ankles this is going to hurt ?
$1400.00 a year in dues and all get O, goose eggs, nada.
People are starting to wake up hopefully.
Unions are a scam on workers…
I could read about how union workers were ripped off by their elected leaders ALL FRICKING DAY LONG.
Keep it up you union idiots. We all need more laughs.
Dig far enough, and you'll find Jimmy Hoffa.
Unions are so out dated,we have more laws on the books now concerning how employers treat employees, the entrenched unions are on there way out, make union dues voluntary across the country, public and private and see what happens.
Wouldn't it be deeeeelicious to see union members stand together against the union bosses the way they did against their actual bosses back in the day – and for the same reasons?
Karma.
However, they won't, they know who their masters are and they know they have more gravy than their biscuits can soak up. In not doing so, they are showing that the union itself is not as tough as it presents itself to be and that will be its undoing, heck it is happening now.
A friend of mine is ASFCME. He works for the Park District and they recently did a round of layoffs (hes been there well over 15 years so these layoffs went deep into seniority). The Park District just chose randomly all across the parks, ignoring seniority entirely. I understand that, it is for the union to deal with if it has a beef right?
Well get this, my buddy had a good deal more seniority than one who was not let go. So a bump had to be done. Still OK within the union world, right? Think the union took care of it in return for those dues? Hardly! My buddy actually had to write a letter to that guy officially "bumping" him. My goodness, it amounted to one employee firing another with the Park district and the Union standing on the sidelines. Pure idiocy it is and it bothers my friend to no end to this day – he feels like he took a job away from someone else while those who are actually being paid to handle that very kind of "administration" did nothing more than shift responsibility for it all to him.
Civil service unions are WORTHLESS beyond funneling money from taxpayers to union thugs and the Democrat Party. Their members, many of whom do a fine job, are used as pawns to launder cash. I hope more articles like this one make their way into the membership's view so they realize how they are being used and abused.
I love the line – the DOL, unlike the unions, has the right to subpoena records. Does anyone think this will happen? That's like having the DOJ investigate the Black Panthers Party election law violations or Penn State investigating Michael Mann over global warming emails that were deleted. Oh, those already happened.
That's what I did. I visualized purple-shirted piranha fish tearing each other to shreds!
I can't believe that just the fact alone that an outside source (a union) can order your boss to fire you for not paying them extortion money should be enough to make people turn on the unions. They are little more than an organized crime syndicate.
Anyone who works for a Union gets just what they deserve and no one should ever feel sorry for any Union Worker.
Unions are Communist.
The only reason any shop stewards are upset and want "reform" is because they feel they want a bigger part of the pie for themselves. Screw them and all unions, union members and their parasitic dhimmis in the democrat party.
This reminds me of the DC teacher's union official who embezzled millions of union dues. The unions just seem to breed corruption.
Wow! That is EXTREME! **pass the popcorn please**
This was one of the many reasons I got out of the CWA a few years ago. Our local was caught stealing money and of course, nothing happened. We started calling the CWA "Cash Without Asking" because they do with their members cash what they want to without asking. It is ridiculous. I don't see how anyone can justify union membership anymore, at all.
It's bad enough when the pinkie-ring-wearing union mafiosi do this to technicians who get paid reasonably well for their skills. It's something else entirely when a bunch of crooks take over a union of 23,000 grocery-store cashiers and meatpackers making a collective average of 12 bucks an hour and do the same things. But that's exactly what happened at United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 7 in Denver, which had been run by Ernie Duran for well over a decade as if he were some kind of ruler over a feudal barony. From The Denver Post:
As the story says, Local 7's membership was tipped off about Ernie's profligacy by the local media just before the last union election in late 2009, so Ernie, his family and the rest of his cronies got the boot.
Best part of the story? Kim Cordova, the reformer who thrashed Ernie Duran, was a part-time supermarket bakery employee before the election. The worst part? The Durans made off with enough money from Local 7 that Crisanta got herself elected to the state House of Representatives last year. You get exactly one guess as to her party registration.
I find it amazing that the union members still believe the union bigwigs actually care about them.
Unfortunately, my place of employment is covered by the CWA. Thank goodness for right to work states so I don't pay dues. The union thugs in our building are all about themselves, not anywhere near their "One for all, all for one" mantra.
They stifle the member's salaries with bad negotiations, and are more interested in what they can do for themselves (officers).
We have begun a website to help our local people understand what the union is doing to them. Any support would be greatly appreciated!

The organized crime is called the left-side representives of the govt. If you were referring to a mafioso type, at least they would represent with some honor.
Crook and thugss incensed at the bad behavior of other crooks and thugs.
Where is man's humanity towrds his fellow man?
Your leadership screwed ya, morons!
I think the term is "inbreeding corruption."
Unions corrupt and self-serving? Whod've thunk it! Dissolve them all NOW! Impeach the union sympathizers and lets get our Republic back!
Oh…….
No spirited defense of the
marxistbrave, thuggish brownshirtsnoble andlet children choke on cake!altruistic Unions? My God, say it isn't so. We've been led astray! (again…and again….and again…)
Where would we be without the beloved Unions….!?!?!?
….less black, full-size sedans.
….fewer 70's porno mustaches.
….a lower obesity rate.
….less funding for Organized Crime.
….higher scholastic achievement.
….less bumper stickers.
….a more productive economy.
….fewer targets for comedy.
….more honest cops who actually, you know, preformed those pesky, boring law enforcement tasks.
Workers of the World Unite! Your overlords need new golf courses.
The media tells them so.
Anymore, they all but admit it.
Where the heck is Huskerslovebaracksorifice to give his thousand word explanation on how this is all a complete lie orchestrated by the tea party.
"…fewer 70's porno mustaches.
….a lower obesity rate. "
STILL laughing.
Unfortunately the union dues are confiscated before they get their check. What they have to do is de-certify the union. I am surprised that people still fall for these union scams. Labor unions exist to line the pockets of the officials so they can buy favors from Democratic politicians.
The shame is that these people go to work each day and expect the union to support them and hold their end of the bargain and they have to find out the hard way that money they have worked hard to earn has been wasted, The customers have paid more that they should have for services in order to fatten the coffers of worthless union bosses and the entire Progressive form of corruption is finally exposed at a great cost to all. They (customers) should sue, get their money back and customers should also be entitled to rebates or credits to offset the unnecessary extra costs they have paid all of these years.
get fired for not paying union dues?????? No wonder all you yankees are sooo grumpy… your all a bunch of slaves!!!!!! Slave to your union! slave to your state government…. but guess what, there is hope, vote Conservatives in and get a right to work( i mean.. FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM!) bill PASSED!!!!
