TEA Party Patriots: Don’t Go Home, Fight!
by Kristinn TaylorBefore there were TEA Party activists, there were Freepers. Through my experience as a long-time Freeper, I learned the value of street activism, and its limitations.
Capitol Confidential, in an essay posted at Big Government Monday, emphatically urges TEA Party activists to stop demonstrating and focus on local politics instead. I strongly disagree.
It is necessary to do both–and in fact it is being done all across the country.
When I was living in Washington, D.C., I helped the D.C. Chapter of FreeRepublic.com and other groups organize hundreds of protests, counter-demonstrations and several rallies. I also was an adviser for the Sept. 12 march on Washington.
Even though we didn’t draw huge crowds like the TEA Parties have this year, during my decade-plus of involvement I have witnessed conservative street activism rack up impressive victories.
Among them: President Bill Clinton was impeached in 1998; in 2000 the Second Amendment Sisters crushed the Million Mom March and turned back the gun-control movement; also in 2000 Vice President Al Gore was prevented from stealing the presidential election and was driven out of ‘Cheney’s house’; from 2001 to the present troop supporters prevented the left from bringing about home front defeats in Iraq and Afghanistan as was done with Vietnam while standing up to anti-American agitators to stop a repeat of the abuse heaped on soldiers from the Vietnam war; in 2004-2005, the Minuteman movement rose up to protest rampant illegal immigration, fighting back repeated attempts to pass amnesty for illegal aliens, forcing the government to step up enforcement and to do more to secure the borders.
These battles were fought on many fronts but they all had one thing in common: people took to the streets and they stayed in the streets.
While taking to the streets is not the solution to every political trouble, it is an essential part of our arsenal that should not be discarded just as our side is motivated and has learned how to do it effectively.
Public demonstrations, when done right, are force multipliers. They encourage others to get involved, bolster current leaders and create new ones while sapping the morale of opponents.
Media coverage of the demonstrations by traditional and new media has been key to making the TEA Party a nationwide movement. The media had something to cover because people were doing something that resonated with the public. Stop doing demonstrations entirely and the movement will be blunted.
Capitol Confidential seems to have forgotten that the TEA Parties were initially organized locally and did not involve marches on Washington until the movement was well grounded. The April 15th Tax Day protests involved upwards of a million TEA Partiers at approximately 900 rallies across the country.
Since then, there has been only one major march on Washington and two ‘emergency’ protests. While we should be wary of overdoing marches on Washington, we are nowhere near that point. It is a sign of their success that President Barack Obama and the Democrats organize events to counter the TEA Party marches on Washington.
I wholeheartedly agree that TEA Party activists should get involved in local politics and stay involved. We are in the fight of our lifetimes for the future of our Nation. It will require lifetime commitments from all of us.
The Left has been relentless in their drive to subvert America, we must match and best their efforts.
Conservatives have long disdained street activism. Many of them look down on it as something dirty and demeaning. From personal experience over the years I’ve seen how uplifting, empowering and effective it can be. This year, millions of conservatives and libertarians have shared that experienced and found it exhilarating.
Why, when so many are motivated for the first time in their lives to take a public stand, are we so quick to tell them to put down their Gadsden flags and go home?
I am confident in the ability of the TEA Party movement to ‘think nationally and act locally’. Fight on my fellow patriots.
To paraphrase Winston Churchill after Dunkirk, we shall fight in the Capitol, we shall fight in our hometowns, we shall fight in the statehouses and town councils, we shall fight in the streets, we shall never surrender.

"The Left has been relentless in their drive to subvert America, we must match and best their efforts." – exactly right! i believe that just now are we (Conservatives) waking to the idea that this is not a battle, but a war. the ideology of the Left is insidious. It's almost like the law of gravity, or how water finds the path of least resistance. This is a war that needs to be fought on all fronts, and quite vigorously at that!
You're correct that we need to do more. We need to run for office, contribute time and money to campaigns, take to the streets, blog, get informed on the issues and FIGHT. Too often we stick to the rule that you don't want to talk about religion or politics in polite company, but the other side has never obeyed that rule and we're giving up too much ground by our silence. So when some jackass in a bar starts running his mouth about global warming or the evil private sector or whatever, we've got to get in his face and either convince him he's wrong or humiliate him Good Will Hunting-style in front of his friends.
Just ignoring the Left doesn't work. It didn't work in the last century when they took control in Germany, Italy, Russia and China and killed tens of millions of people, and it damn sure won't work this century when they take over the USA. Either we put a stop to it and shout them down, or we'll have hell to pay.

I could not disagree more with this and think Capitol Conf was RIGHT ON THE MARK. We have done a piss poor job of community organizing locally and we have not even bothered to groom our local farm team, those that will end up in the beltway.
Like the author, I too have stood on streetcorners for years, with Free Republic and many other groups…and it does some important things…but with the reality of the bias of the MSM and general lack of coverage, we need to DO MORE. It is easier to get your little local paper to cover a storming of city hall in littletown wherever than it is to get CNN to admit to 1.5M people in DC against healthcare.Certainly big events help fellowship, make some impact, re-energize folks….
But let's be real here…how many of us have been doing these things for years OUT OF OUR OWN POCKETS…and for what? Have Congress ignore us and pass what they want any way?
We have to really think about our resources here, both emotional and financial. I can not keep going to DC in this economy, but I sure as hell can go to my town hall or my state capitol.
This is a house by house, street by street, town by town battle….this is NOT A BELTWAY BATTLE….the last week should have made that totally clear.
Let the Media keep saying nothing but hateful things about Tea Partys .. who cares .. soon they will feel the wrath… We are biger than anyone can imagine and we are making a difference – EMAIL / CALL / FAX your reps….

We have used the excuse that we've been busy paying taxes, working and raising families. The fact is we want it done for us…we've been lazy and now there is a lot of extra work to do because we let thing deteriorate badly. The left like Bolsheviks are more committed and they out worked us! They are 15% of the population but they have and continue to use the law (most democrats are lawyers) which they now control through their activism to ram it home to the right. We must continue to be loud, in their face, aggressive and we must use every technology trick in the book to expose them. We must stand in their doorways, we must confront them, record them, leek everything we can find. We must get off our ass and OUT WORK THEM! Have a list of questions ready to ask “in your pocket” know your message, expose corruption and scream “fire”. EVERYDAY!

As much as I hate protesting this and protesting that, the Right is at the point that we must do it or we can just say good-bye to the United States that we know. The Left has gotten to where it is by loudly protesting just about everything while we on the Right sat back and tried to play the game quietly. Look what it has gotten the Right; a country rapidly headed towards Socialism.

O/T and my apology but…. Wonderful piece of news in Rasmussun this morning. The ObamaPOS Daily Presidential Tracking poll has hit EPIC numbers. He is now at -21% indice. This is the lowest negative rating EVAH for a president. 25% strongly approve while 46% STRONGLY DISAPPROVE !
A very good poll sign that Conservative efforts are progressing quite nicely. The trends will follow accordingly. Keep the faith…..

We, the American people, have become frustrated to the point that most are no longer able to palate the rancidity of what the political establishment has or attempted to force upon us. Both parties, the status quo, are simply the collective wills of special interest groups. They groom and select their operatives, package and present them to the voters as candidates of choice with the illusion that somehow there are profound defining characters, philosophical or ideological differences between them. They sell themselves on the basis that these perceived differences set them apart and provide choices in determining whom are worthy of governing in the interest of America and the American people. In reality these choices are only doubled headed coins, hedged and selected by greater masters, special interests, and beholden to serve those masters and themselves, not the people that elected them. Vote for a candidate in 2010 that is beholden to only one special interest, the American people. Vote for real change, vote out incumbents or party representatives whom have proven true what has been stated.

I think it's time for the 'tea party' activities to mirror what the democrats have been doing…use bully tactics, come up with our own form of 'ACORN' and MAKE OUR VOICES HEARD!!! Excellent article Mr. Taylor! I've been around for a little while and I have never seen this kind of unanimity and intensity in my life. The resources the internet provides will allow this movement to galvanize its energies in positive ways. The only question as I have said many times before is what role the GOP would like to have in this tsunami of conservativism sweeping the country. They can either be fundamentally transformed or have their big tent trampled. For starters they better get on board with Mark Rubio and Rand Paul. Mr. Steele and Mr. Gingrich ought not to resist the people or their will be a new formal party in this country.
Get you head out your @@S and really look at what is going on. The economy is doing great? You mean all of the artificial growth brought on by our President throwing around stimulus dollars..that we will have to pay back?
The tea party movement is full of educated, motivated, organized, self financing self starters. They are an army of Davids. Witness the thousands of homemade signs. Witness the self funded trips to Washington. The tea party movement is already deeply involved in electoral politics. Look at how money and support is flowing to the likes of Mark Rubio. Conservative and libertarian candidates are appearing of the talk shows and gathering support. This movement is extraordinary in that it is truly grassroots. There is no one at the top, just like free market capitalism. And just like free market capitalism it adapts and grows far faster than authoritarian top down political parties.
Don't worry about tea party activists they are moving fasyer than you can think.

I like to start the conversation just like they do, pretend that the whole room agrees with the conservative and that the liberal fascists are generally considered idiots. It's actually TRUE. But this is the game they play.
For example I discussed earlier why Marriott continues to play CNN in the concierge lounge. FNC is more popular by a large margin but all Marriott concierge lounges are tuned to CNN at 6:30 am. Yes, that is so true. And, we need to start looking for promising campaigns in all the states and contributing to them. I used to think, "What can my paltry $25 do to help?" But if we all contributed $25, even $15 or $10 to each campaign, we can make a huge difference.

Even though I don't like party politics, I plan to get involved in my local Republican party — and bring along my friends. I think working within this infrastructure is the best way to get conservative candidates with nominated — then elected. I really had faith that Ben Nelson would do the right thing for constituents in Nebraska — and the nation. I always thought of him as a man of principle. But watching him cave to party politics made me realize that we just can't trust Democrats.

You are so correct. I was blown away by all of the conversations I have had with total strangers at both town hall meetings and rallies. From kids in their 20's to people of retirement age. Well informed, articulate and, equally important, passionate about true fundamental conservative values.

I've already contributed to Bachmann and Colonel West (Florida) and I am not from their states. Bachmann raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in 2 days from people across the country after she started preaching Tea Party values.

The bill was not passed yet; it was a vote to continue. If the senate passes it than the house and senate have to come up with a compromise and both the house and senate have to vote again. Hopefully, we can stall it until the Nov. election. It was suppose to pass this past summer but the protests pushed it back. We are making a difference.

The fight will continue. As a Tea Partier that went to the two big protests on health care in DC and five or more in OHIO, we're going to continue to be visible, and now that the Senate has seen fit to suspend rules, so should we. There's a dirty, nasty revolution coming in this country. The change we're promising is different. We don't want change, we want our FREEDOM back. We're being taxed and nanny stated more than the British ever would have tried to get away with. 200 years ago, people like Pelosi, Reid, and the like would have been tarred and feathered for pissing on their fellow citizens and trying to morally justify it.
We're going to take the parties over from the inside and GUT them like the stinky fish they've become. They both need to be left dead and all the half-truths buried. We've also going to be in the face of all these jackass hypocrites we've elected from both parties. Either be fiscally responsible to all your citizens or you will be taken down. Enough of the progressive horseshit. It is killing the spirit that even allows us to have this sort of discussion. If you think you need your government to take care of you, you are going to die a very cold death, and hopefully sooner rather than later. Many people are doing many different things. This is good, but not enough! We need to get organized on all levels.
When Michelle Bachmann called for people to come to DC, and we did, the House Representatives cleared out of their buildings. A travel fund of some sort would be a good idea–so that those conservatives who are out of work/retired and live in the area, could visit the Office Buildings daily.

On both points, Protesting and grassroots campaigning, both ARE the way to go. First, we MUST be SEE and HEARD. One voice usually can't accomplish much in this political world, it's the Power of the Masses. All our voices joined together with the basics of what we agree on. We need an even larger showing in Washington DC the next time around as well. Second, We have hundreds,in some places, and thousands in others that can make a difference just by getting their neighbors to see the light. 100 people in a town who in turn talk to 4 neighbors… Imagining just helping 1 of those 4 for each person. Adding yet another voice and another vote. Talk to your neighbors and don't. When people try to avoid the subject and say, "I'm not that into politics" , tell them they Should Be and WHY. People have to know and I'm afraid that Ignorance plays a part in this. Far too many people simply Do Not Know what's going on. Tea Partiers and anyone else with similar goals can make a HUGE difference in tis country! Let's keep working at it, and work even harder! God Bless and Best of Luck to ALL!!!
The reason corruption flourishes, and the Federal Gov't gets involved with local issues it has no business in, is because of this ridiculous 'farm team' idea. Local politicians need to deal with providing fire, police, filling potholes, etc. This has NOTHING to do with limited national government. When you think of elected office as a career, or as a sports analogy, you have lost your ability to self govern. Senators and Congressmen should NOT come from the ranks of State and City legislators. They only bring to the national stage the skills they developed locally – that is…how to get the government to accomplish things that were important to them as local officials. Instead, they should be men of good character who focus on limiting the Federal government, not simply using it to bring taxpaper money back home. (which the 'farm team' politicians see as their primary role.)

Thirty years ago the Democratic Party was far less radical than it is today. It has since been fundamentally transformed by the Alenskyites and Globalists into the cesspool it is today. The Tea Party is a force far greater than many of us realise, well over a million people on 912, NY23, Rubio are only the first signs. All over the country fine patriotic conservative American citizens are annoncing their candidacy for office in all levels of government.

You're right! Complaing about the problems we face isn't going to do anything. Rallies help and the news coverage they bring helps get the word out. In the end though the only thing politicans are going to listen to is votes. No more voting for the lesser of two evils. We need more third party and alternative candidates on ballots to show the right/left paradigm that we won't play their games.

Well voting in establishment neoconservative righties is only slightly better. If the misery index continues to rise then people well disregard the left right paradigm and educate themselves on government and politicians.
This, coupled with the government continuing to lose revenue by choking the free market, and working hand and hand with big corporations and banks to create a european style economy, will bring about change out of necessity. The breakdown in California is a precursor of what will happen to the federal government as we know it. When they run out of other peoples money to redistribute, then change is unavoidable.
