Illinois Grant to ACORN Housing Under Review
by Kristina RasmussenAccording to a 2008 annual progress report from the Illinois Housing Development Authority, ”ACORN Housing” was listed as a recipient of a $100,000 capacity building grant for a “Predatory Lending Database Program.” The funding was announced in November 2008.
Rebecca Boykin, Communications Manager for the Illinois Housing Development Authority, provided this update on the grant:
The Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) awarded a $100,000 grant to ACORN Housing Corporation, Inc. as part of the Predatory Lending Database Program, which helps provide counseling for homebuyers facing predatory loans, in an effort to decrease the likelihood of future foreclosures. ACORN Housing was selected for funding following an application process that included a review of its HUD certification. Under the grant guidelines, ACORN Housing is required to submit a progress report later this month. They’ve been granted a portion of the $100,000. The remainder is under review in light of recent events.
There’s been debate over whether or not ACORN Housing received state money. The headline from a September 19 “Statehouse Insider” column in the State Journal-Register noted that “Illinois doesn’t have any contracts with ACORN.” Specifically, “the comptroller’s office handles state contracts and payments made under those contracts. It can’t find any payments made to ACORN going back two years.” The Capitol Fax Blog reported today that “the IHDA did give ACORN Housing, Inc. part of a $100,000 grant a few weeks ago, just before the latest scandal broke.” I called the comptroller’s office and was informed that payments must go through the comptroller’s accounting system before they show up in the online contract database; this may explain the delay.
In other news, U.S. Representatives Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Peter Roskam (R-IL) held a press conference this morning in Chicago asking the U.S. Census Bureau to cut ties with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a sister group to ACORN. From their press release:
“ACORN and the SEIU have a long web of connections in Chicago and around the country, and there’s simply no place for a group so closely connected to ACORN to be part of something of such national importance as the U.S. Census,” Congressman Roskam said. “In this time where this Congressional Majority is running record deficits, ACORN should have no place cashing checks from the American taxpayer. We were promised a more open and honest government—that means keeping ACORN from the federal trough.”
“Given SEIU’s co-location with ACORN in Chicago and SEIU’s intimate financial relationship with ACORN, we should take action to protect the public from the corruption of the 2010 census,” Congressman Kirk said. “To defend the integrity of the process, the Census Bureau should end its close relationship with ACORN’s close sister organization, the SEIU.”

It appears that some momentum is finally building.
Someone needs to sever the ACORN and SEIU umbilical cord and euthanize them both.
Look for a new “crisis” to hit in the next few weeks. It would not surprise me to have this “coincide” with news that Obama has direct links to some shenanigans perpetuated by ACORN. We are now talking about Illinois ACORN and that’s getting awfully close to “teh one” Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Giles, O’Keefe, Breitbart happened to release a new video from Chi-Town right about that same time? Get out the popcorn folks this is going to get good.
I think there is a lot more connections than just SEIU. It might be time to whip out RICO! They are all a bunch of crooks and anyone associated with ACORN should not receive any more money from taxpayer. The only problem is the most powerful person on the planet is is in bed with them all!

I think I should be able to "earmark" where my money goes too. I do not have an earmark for ninety percent of this crap. They are wasting a whole lot more than the fifty percent that is quoted. Correction: Illinois SEIU-ACORN leadership endorsed Pat Quinn. Unions long ago gave up on caring what the rank-and-file really want. Can you find a story anywhere that says the members voted for the endorsement? Preferably secret ballot with independent third-party verification? Best of luck with that search.
Women who feel their families are threatened are very dangerous, somewhat less for a woman who feels her neighbor's family is threatened but watch out when she thinks the danger could hurt her family too. More are recognizing what Barry really means for their families, and they will take action.

I'm confused by the term "predatory lending". It's not like the lendee is being forced into accepting a loan, is it? Can the lendee not take his business to another institution if he feels he is getting a raw deal? If no other institution will lend to him, how is it predatory for the institution to offer a loan no one else will offer? And how is it not the lendee's responsibility to either walk away from this offer or to man up and pay the obligation?
As I admitted, I'm confused by this.
ACON was instrumental in getting loans for Lendees most if not all knowing that they never qualified or would not be willing to pay the loans back. So many if not all of these ACON deals, the Lendee had no choice. He/She had no other options and had to accept their deal if they wanted to buy a home. In addition, ACON was working closely, with major financial institutions to provide loans to Illegal Aliens whom are in the US illeagally! (i.e. Citibank w/San Diego ACON Office investigation)
Predatory, Yes. The lenders provided loans that was secured by the real estate and as the Lendee could not make payment, the Lenders would foreclose on the property. ACON was able with its connections in the White House, promised the Lenders seats at Lobbyist Tables, Grants, Legislative promises for their efforts. Good Deal, NO! As Lenders begin to foreclose and board them up, ACON would block and/or slow the foreclose process and even tear the wood off foreclosed homes to allow it members to squat in them. Thuggery!
I ask again, how is it predatory? No one forced these unqualified lendees to accept these loans. These lendees absolutely had a choice: to not accept the loan. Accepting a loan knowing that you are likely to be unable to pay it off because you want to buy a home exposes you to the normal operation of the banking industry, namely the property becomes the collateral. This is hardly predatory. The lender ends up with a property that it must then dispose of before it can recover its investment. If any party in these transactions can be said to be predators, it would have to be those who accepted the loans they could not repay and their enablers, ACORN.
You are correct….The Lendees do not have to accept these loans. Predatory lending is a pejorative term used to describe unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent practices of some lenders during the loan origination process. Many if not all these loans were provided using Unfair, Deceptive, and/or Fraudulent practices. Please note that many of these practices were unkown to the Lendee. Shame on them for not reading the contract.
(If the Lendee did not meet income requirements, documents were falsified to reflect so) , (If Lendee could not meet the minimum down payment, a refinance would take place 2 years after purchase and the new loan were at a higher interest rate, in additon to the higher financed amount, that the Lendee could no longer afford)
