Indoctrination Fridays: Curriculum Teaches Kindergartners to Unionize
by Kyle OlsonThis is one part of a running series entitled “Indoctrination Fridays,” a weekly review of leftist propaganda incorporated into public school curriculum, much geared towards elementary students. For more of the series, please visit PublicSchoolSpending.com.
In typical union and socialist propaganda, employers are depicted as cruel and uncaring business owners who never miss an opportunity to cheat and mistreat workers.
Big Labor’s “us versus them” worldview is so entrenched that they can’t recognize the fact that most successful companies value their employees, and do whatever they can to retain their best workers. That reality, of course, undercuts the relevance of unions.
So what’s a union to do?
Like their fellow travelers in the “man-made” global warming community, the unions know they have to indoctrinate the young with their propaganda. But when you’re dealing with kindergartners, you have to insert the concept of unionizing subtly into lessons. You’ll get blank stares if you talk about the virtues of Jimmy Hoffa or the Service Employees International Union.
The California Federation of Teachers produced the perfect solution with “Trouble in the Hen House: A Puppet Show.” To spare you the unpleasantness of reading this bilge, here’s the basic plot: a bunch of hens feel “oppressed” by the farmer, so they band together and create Hens United. The angry unionized chickens are too powerful a force for the farmer to handle, so he capitulates to the hens’ demands. Here’s a key excerpt:
Henrietta (the hen): Farmer Brown, we have something to say. This is what we chickens want:
1. More and better food. No mold, no sand in our corn.
2. Freedom to walk around outside and a bigger hen house.
3. Each hen will lay an average of four eggs a week.
4. Stop punishing us. Let Hortensia come back.
Farmer: No way! Who ever heard of chickens telling the farmer what to do? Shut up and get back to the henhouse!
Chickens: No, Farmer Brown, not this time! And besides those things, you have to recognize our union, Hens United, or we’ll all stop laying eggs!
Farmer: OK, OK, if I have no eggs to sell, I’ll go bankrupt. We’d all starve, so I guess I’ll have to do what you say. Since you’re all together, what can I do?
Chickens: We won! We stuck together and we won! Si, Se puede.*
With this puppet show, educators now have a way of teaching children how to use mob tactics to get what they want from those in positions of power. This puppet show fits very nicely into a kindergartener’s school day – right after finger painting and just ahead of snack time.
Lest readers are tempted to dismiss this as some wacky lesson plan that never sees the light of day in an actual classroom, consider this story about the 2009 California Federation of Teachers convention, as reported in the May 2009 newsletter of the San Mateo Community College Federation of Teachers:
“…Bill Morgan uses a short puppet show, Trouble in the Hen House, to teach about the strength and value of organizing unions. His students act out a story about hens who organize a union to fight against unfair compensation and poor working conditions. Through this activity, the students learn about becoming activists, organizers, negotiators and problem solvers.”
Just to remind you, the “students” the newsletter is referring to are kindergartners and first graders.
With labor activists starting to propagandize students in kindergarten, they’ll already be brainwashed by the time they learn to actually think critically. Vladamir Lenin is quoted as saying, “Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.”
The scary thing for America’s future is that this is happening this early in children’s lives and little if anything is being done about it.
*Note: “Si, Se puede” is Spanish for “Yes, it is possible,” but is sometimes translated as “Yes, we can.” Where have I heard that before…?

In a totally unrelated story, ALF-CIO is the new TSA UNION.
" I am jacks raging bile duct"
I wish they had taught this when I was in Kindergarten. Would have organized by fellow rugrats and demanded longer nap times, more gym and chocolate instead of white milk.____All kidding aside, parents have to take a more proactive role in understanding what their kids are being taught. My daughter just finished her junior year of high school and I had to spend a lot of time providing her with alternative sources to the rewritten history incorporated into her textbook. She gets to make up her own mind, but it's important she have access to both sides.
Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.

The government has monopolized the education system but there are still better choices, home schooling, private and parochial schools. Sacrifice cannot be too great for your child's education.
The story stops too soon. It omits the part where the farmer has to raise the price of his eggs, can no longer compete, loses the farm and walks away. The ending is sad as the half starved chickens are eaten by coyotes because the chickens had no knowledge of fences.
Vouchers.
Time to end "Indoctrination Fridays" and every other day of "indoctrination" by our gooberment schools. Defund the DOE!
Stories like this make me glad my younger daughters are home schooled and not subjected to this leftist garbage. They are taught about unions but they get shown the whole story. From the history of unions and benefits to the corruption of unions and negatives. Guess what side they lean towards after learning of the corruption and thug tactics the unions use.
Of course, this could never happen. We all know reality would have the farmer meet the chickens at the door with an axe, chicken dinners for days on his mind, and a new truck full of laying hens with two new roosters sitting just outside the door when he does it. Farmer's know how to handle animal revolts. Ring the chow bell!!
true, true….they only carry the projection until the sun comes up on their dream, they never let the sun shine in on the wolf that eats that dream for breakfast.
My nephew is almost 3. He loves Thomas and Friends. It's cute little story about a tank engine and all his buddies on the Island of Sodor. It's all about being useful and choosing work over play. He's too young to understand what it means, but it's still soaking into his little brain. The thing is, Thomas and his friends has been around since the 40's.
Starting in on the young is nothing new. It's a powerful tool. Same thing with Sesame Street. Parents need to pay attention. Bears5314 is right.
Guess we're not moving fast enough toward Socialism. The libs are going to start with the kids and hope they "lead up." What they don't get, though, is that allowing this kind of stuff is exactly what's going to get them sent home come 2012. Wise up, Libs! You'd better get control of your unions, instead of the other way around.
Heaven forbid that children would ever learn the skill of putting their voices together to achieve a goal (lobbying, voting, achieving statehood, consumer protections, or unionizing). The sky is falling. You can only shield your children from these notions for so long. It is one book among the hundreds that sit along side of it promoting fawning corporate boot-licking. Quit yer damn crying.
This is a classical example of what happens when people allow things to be put in the hands of the "central government". Now you can understand the reasoning behind the founders giving so much power to the states, which has been eroded throughout the years by such things as the DOE, EPA, and so many more.
My granddaughter just graduated to third grade and was one of three in the top of her class this past school year. The other day she told paw-paw (me) that she messed up in class during a talk from the teacher and voted for Obama by raising her hand. She knows paw-paw doesn't like Obama, but peer pressure in school and those leftist union teachers have destroyed the young minds of our kids with that stupid Hmmmm Hmmmmm Hmmmmmmm chant, and of course they all think Obumus is the greatest person since St. Nick. But she's learning. She loves listening to Mark Levine with paw-paw so she's obtaining a balanced political perspective (when she's not laughing at Obumus).
Then tell the story of the US Constitution and Bill of Rights…Organizing for freedom from despots…Unions today are just communist leeches that need criminal prosecution. Get out of our kids' heads. Govt schools are now communist, antiCapitalism indoctrination centers. It will not last…or if it does then freedom ends…over my dead body.
The two programs I don't let my nephews watch when they come over are Handy Manny and Dora the Explorer. Both seem, to me anyway, to promote immigration reform and amnesty for illegals by way of subtle little messages.
Sounds like it's time for Farmer Brown to start selling roasted chickens until he can get some more chickens.
In real life that is exactly why chicken soup was invented. Think the guv will act any differently? Hmmm, a cartoon about Stalin, Mao or Che's Cuba should do the trick. Naturally nobody was eaten on a regular basis, just thrown into a hole.
The only shielding going on is from the true nature of power, the purpose of the founding of this nation, the founding documents and the history of governments before, during and currently evolving on this rock. Heaven forbid the loons at democratiya get a solid honest review of their opinions.
Fawning corporate boot-licking, eh? I'd be interested in hearing about that curriculum. Surely, out of "hundreds" of books, it should be easy for you to come up with a few titles. Of course, I'm sure our current administration has taken a few courses on the topic, courtesy of Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, etcetera. Hmmm…I wonder if those courses can be audited? I should look into that…
If I were the left I'd be concerned about the backlash that will inevitably come from these kids when they mature. Granted, there will be enough of them brainwashed to populate a politburo but the rest will not have any respect for them after discovering the lies. We see the same phenomena in divorced parenting where one parent tries to foster hate with lies. Kids are just little people taking the comfort of security from those who provide it. Aside from that, they are all thinkers observing your ways. Never ever lie to a child. It will come back to haunt you.
And that is why so many get tilled under like weeds.
The sky is falling!! Our children are behind the learning curve and will have a hard time competing with other nations that are properly educating their future generations. You think that China schools its children on how to unionize or about homosexual relations or do you think they actually teach them reading, writing and math?
Capitalism is innate to our understanding of right and wrong. Look at this study which verifies this.
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/are-kids-born-cap...
This is why the left must indoctrinate because liberalism is contrary to human nature (and a mental disorder)
In my version of that story, those hens would have ended up as a plate of fried chicken and the bones left as a warning to the next bunch of hens…
A farmer would never feed poor feed to his chickens. At the very core of this book is a lie. The chickens are refusing to produce what they naturally would. That is called sloth. The chickens are unionizing to right no wrong. The ENTIRE Union system we currently have is based on the same lie.
" out of "hundreds" of books, it should be easy for you to come up with a few titles."
yep. the classic argument of liberals:
"You guys do it ALL THE TIME!!!"
"Ok, name ONE."
"Uhhhhh, there's so many I can't think of just a single example!" -then they call you a racist.
Ah yes…the new generation of Hitler's…oops…I mean Obama's Youth.
schools continue to teach/indoctrinate the union story as if we're still stuck in the 1920s-30s. the era of evil, oppressive, robber barons, long before things like OSHA, minimum wage laws, collective bargaining, etc., etc., etc. in other words, all the (arguably) legitimate battles in the labor market have been won thru legislation decades ago, and now the unions can only demand MORE, while offering nothing positive in return.
and as several have already pointed out, these skewed lessons never follow thru to their natural conclusion of reduced competitiveness, loss of jobs overseas, etc. -that would ruin the indoctrination process.
"OK, OK, if I have no eggs to sell, I’ll go bankrupt. We’d all starve"
The problem with this story is eventually they will run Farmer Brown out of business anyway and just as Farmer Brown states "They will all starve"
What will the world be like 20 years from now when these Kiddies get a chance to put into action the subliminal message they are being fed?
You want to teach your own child to be a whining, petulant, parasitic rabble rouser?
Fine. Go ahead. It's a free country.
But you and the rest of you like-minded disgusting, anti-American, propagandizing leftwing scum keep your filthy, corrupt paws off of my kids.
Are capitalist-hating Marxists forcing children to read it against their parents' will?
Bingo! Good morning bro.
That is it at the root.
Upon realizing that his costs would go through the roof, the farmer started researching herbs and spices. His name–Harlan Sanders.
Yes, but then the hero, Barack Obama, comes along, nationalizes the farm — for the good of the chickens, of course, promises them they'll triple their egg output, while reducing the cost of chicken feed, and gives them huge pensions and benefits, at no additional cost to the farmer. And all of it reduces the deficit.
All in a very compact 3,500 page bill.
And all the sheep stand and applaud his goodness and brilliance.
Good morning, P. It really is as simple as that, indeed. The mud used to cloud these things really gets outta hand sometimes.
Yes, but the story continues….Obama runs out of money, tries to sell the farm, but no one in the USA knows how to farm anymore so the coyotes come and eat the now impoverished chickens..The End.
Obfuscation is the tools tool.
With her paw-paw's help, she'll be telling her classmates a few home truths very soon…!
A couple years ago, a little racist classmate of my daughter called her "Barack Obama." The racist intent of the taunt went right over her head–she was upset that the kid compared her to a Democrat! (A very proud mama moment!)
What ever happened to the red flag that used to go up for someone when their rhetorical position required obfuscation? If you have to lie, guess what, you're almost surely wrong.
This will make it easier to introduce "Animal Farm" & teach how the oppressed rise up from slavery, take over Farmer Jones's house & become the oppressor. All because Individual Liberty is sacrificed for the collective lemming mentality.
If the farmer were smart, he'd point out to the hens that he won't starve because they'll be lunch!
LOLOLOLOL! What a great kid!
In "workers' paradises" like the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact countries, "agitators", if they weren't thrown into holes, were sent to government-run labor camps where they were put to work on government-planned "shovel-ready" projects. If the government needed more shovel-wielders, they would just find and arrest some more "agitators".
Amen!
HAve any of those teachers spewing such Union garbage ever heard of the story "The Goose that laid the golden eggs"
They conveniently forget about that ageless story don't they…the fools
Yet another reason to put my kids into private school/homeschooling. It's time to cut the federal DOE.
Good on her !!! Yes it is a very proud moment to cherish esp in today's world.
"It is one book among the hundreds that sit along side of it promoting fawning corporate boot-licking. as opposed to promoting fawning big-government boot-licking as the California Federation of Teachers is doing. "Quit yer damn crying," said the teachers' union head to the taxpayers.
Do YOU know Tyler Durden?????
it's both.
From your kid's mouth to God's ears…
Classic!
hmmm this sounds familiar…. now where have I read of such a tactic before? hmmmmmm taking children from their parents, indoctrinating them with propaganda. hmmm yea sounds familiar. Do you all recognise it? I do. Seems to me it happened back in the days of Hitler.
Bingo! You recognised it!
Addendum: .
After the farm collapses, Obama and the Marxists blame George Bush for the failure, as well as Republicans who "sabotaged" it by, er, not eagerly assisting them in the destruction, because they WANTED the farm to fail.
This is another reason why we are going to home school are daughter who starts kindergarten next year. Especially living in California, I do not want her taught at 5 years old that homosexuality is just another normal expression of human sexuality.
http://www.bluecollarphilosophy.com/2011/06/new-d...
I'm done with that dope/Paul thread. It always ends up the same if you have the patience to stay with it. They defend societally-deprecating behavior because of their selfishness and childishness. 'Not interested in improving humanity but rather their personal debasement and, as a result, others. Almost as selfish as the motives at the root of most abortions.
Libertariansim is just a less honest variation on regressivism, if you're willing to stick with the rhetorical pathology of it.
Good post.
Yes. When I started reading Click Clack Moo to my son, I was very upset about such mindless crap. I was hoping Farmer Brown was going to say, well if you are not willing to provide me with milk or eggs, I'll just stop providing you with feed and water. Let's see who wins.
As predictable as night following day. And the unions said "there's a chicken born every minute".
Home school or private school is the only way to go until we get these entrenched socialists out of our education system.
Farmer: I'm sorry, but laying eggs is not a skill, and chickens are a dime-a-dozen. I'll just put you all on the chopping block and get new non-union hens who will be happy to sit on their asses all day and lay eggs in exchange for room and board. Or better yet, I'll just outsource your jobs to some Pakistani chickens.
Chickens: Oooops.
We need many more parents like you. I'm a private school history teacher, and I can personally attest to the bias found in many textbooks, especially ones used in public schools.
I respectfully disagree: If you have financial responsibility and moral responsibility for your child I am sure you are trying to teach her right from wrong. We do this with our pets to reward good behavior and let them know what we think is bad behavior. How else can they know? I dispair of adult conservatives who are too afraid of their 20 something children to call a spade a spade. Capitalism is not equal to socialism for her to decide what is right.
Just wait til she gets to college and the instructors are 100% leftists: For 40 years they have demanded you give the correct answer (leftist) or you get a bad grade until you figure it out. At her age she needs help to know right from wrong. Have her read the truth about the Russian and Chinese revolutions that killed hundreds of millions of their own so they could control the younger generations. If you and other parents fail to teach this younger generation, we are doomed in our lifetimes.
And for our country.
Then they cut the chicken feed, reduce the number of chickens, steal the eggs. The producers stop producing eggs and voila-end of eggs, end of story.
Good news it is finally on TV for all to see the thugs in action, funded by Barrack Hussein Obama's Organizing for America. Thanks for being a patriot and educating your children about the difference between right and wrong. Greece on TV is a great learning tool to show children what happens when the entitled would rather destroy their country than give up their entitlements.
Why is it union fools never revolt against their overpaid union bosses like they are advocating here?
As an American have two choices: Work for yourself or work for someone else. Too dumb or afraid to start your own business? Get paid what you are worth working for someone else who is brighter. That does not give them entitlement to the owner's profits.Basic education for chickens.
This story makes me want to puke!!!
The answer to this is MORE HOME-SCHOOLING!!!
Can you get her in another school ? That would be a good paw-paw to find a private school and pay for a decent education without the indoctrination.
Maybe next time she'll be saying: "Pipe down ya big dopes!! This man is ruining our country! Thaaaat's right, I said it!!"
Thank you for your leadership.
At least your chickens get it. Most libs in the US fail to get the message. Since schools are paid for buns on seats, an all out removal of kids from public schools should sink the boat. WOW! Think of it. Could property taxes go down when there are fewer public schools to fund?
Only a Leftist would look at "The Little Engine That Could" and shout "FAWNING CORPORATE BOOT LICKING!!!"
Kindergarten is supposed to be about learning the very basic building blocks of education. Personally, I would feel uncomfortable with a story that blatantly promoted my own political agenda. It has no place in a kindergarten classroom. I, and most likely a majority of the other respondents here, are more than happy to just have kindergartners taught what five year-olds are supposed to be taught! Is that asking too much! It is sickening that you leftists see them not as children, but as little larvae to be trained as future political pawns.
Alright Mark, I caught that… !!! ; )
No, it's pretty clear you missed the point.
My response to the brainwashed kids…over a plate of chicken nuggets, no doubt:
Chickens: No, Farmer Brown, not this time! And besides those things, you have to recognize our union, Hens United, or we’ll all stop laying eggs!
Farmer: If the chickens won't lay then I'll sell the to Pilgrims Pride and replace them with other chickens that will be happy to do the job for the rate of pay. This is a right to work farm, if you don't want the job, I'll replace you with someone who does.
Unions be damned…
If I was the farmer I would chop off their heads and sell the chickens for stew, then get new un-united chickens.
This “lesson” continues a long line of troubling discoveries made. There was never much of a question as to how politically active public sector teachers are.
Taken together, the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association have been the nation's leading political donors in federal elections over the past two decades. Teachers' unions are either number one or number two in terms of political giving in 60% of US states (http://bit.ly/l1rdpr).
Really the big problem is that the young children indoctrinated with these lessons will find themselves at a disadvantage as they get older. The private sector represents 90% of the working force, and these children would quickly find that these lessons of “worker empowerment” do not translate to the working world as the majority of Americans know it.
However, it’s pretty clear that the children aren’t being taught these lessons for their benefit, but rather to elicit sympathy for the plight of the public sector teachers. Hopefully these children are presented with the full side of the argument when they leave the school, because there is clearly much more to it than their teachers want them to believe.
In the next episode, the hens will be fighting for the right to marry other hens and roosters with other roosters. Of course there will be no eggs produced from these unions but they will want the right to "adopt" unwanted eggs from regular couples.. LOL.
I love this story.
When I was a kid, we used to cull the chicken crop and a line of women and kids would first catch the chicken, then behead the chicken, then gut the chicken and then dip it in boiling water and pluck the chicken.
The chicken would then be cut up and bagged for the freezer.
We would typically do about 150 chickens in a day.
That got us through the winter.
As I would have written it, the farmer would reply to the chicken demands by simply hollering, "MA bring my shotgun, we gotta problem here."
QED
Very good, Cali!! Now, can you make that into a cartoon?
Funny, left up to me, one or two of the chickens would have taken the time to pick out the dirt from their food and done their best to lay the most and biggest eggs. Then they would have received the best food to continue laying eggs and had a comfortable place to do so inside the farmers house. But, that's just me.
Kinda' like the story of the three little pigs, you won't get eaten by the wolf if you are industrious and build a house the wolf can't get into.
Oh, wait, they changed that story too. Never mind.
smart farmer would make chicken pot pie, sell the pies, use the money to buy chickens that do their jobs.
That's what the smart farmer would do IF he didn't have to worry about the crooked NLRB breathing down his neck.
I've been troubled by Obama's statements since I first heard them, although the first time I did not hear them in context. Here they are in context:
"And we’re going to grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy. We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set.
We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded. We need to use technology to connect people to service. We’ll expand USA Freedom Corps to create online networks where American can browse opportunities to volunteer. You’ll be able to search by category, time commitment and skill sets. You’ll be able to rate service opportunities, build service networks, and create your own service pages to track your hours and activities."
Question is – has he ever spent any time doing what he promised? Did he double the Peace Corps yet, or is he anywhere closer to it? Were any new consulates opened? What about the USA Freedom Corps, etc.?
And if he has done these things, what's going on with them? Are they achieving better "national security" for us?
Frankly, even while he may have been truthful about pushing more Americorps and Freedom Corps stuff, the words he used were creepy and inappropriate.
That's not the end of illegitimate government efficiencies either. The list includes medical research, military doctrines like the Soviet nuclear sub service being a radiation test lab, blackmarketeering as a national economy, prostitution and education based on ability to perform what specialty the government has need for. I'm sure a thorough list would touch every aspect of life. I'm still intrigued by the Milgram Paradigm and how it is being applied through the media to control all who are gullible or insecure enough to follow a blithering bunch of idiots train of though.
Everybody please notice that this is nothing more than a seagull troll. He swooped in, SQUAWK, SQUAWK, FLAP, FLAP, PLOP, PLOP,
And never came back to defend what he said.
Typical.
Yes or other chickens come along who would gladly work in conditions the other chickens won't thereby putting those chickens out of work ie to the slaughter house.
I was thinking the same thing.
I think that would be another wonderful idea to really start taking the fight to them, rather than just holding rallies once a year. We need to show them that we are ready to pledge our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.
I almost got sick reading this but then I remembered that yes indeed-y, our schools are promoting a set social agenda – and I work in the schools! http://3rseduc.blogspot.com/2011/06/sheeple.html and a few others in my blog are beginning to uncover the tip of the iceberg of indoctrination in schools. Parents, review education history and school curriculum and stay involved.
NOT NEW! IN 1989, I began a journey to alert parents to what was going on in the classroom of the government schools when I found a book that was a rewrite of the LITTLE RED HEN…. Remember her…. Who will help me plant the wheat? Not I said the cat. Not I said the rat. I will do it myself said the Little Red hen-….and she did…..Well, after the wheat was planted, harvested, and made into bread without any help from the barnyard friends, the little Red Hen was portrayed as a greedy hen who refused to share her bread with the others who had no bread… that was 30 + years ago. Wake up parents. Such incidents were pervasive. What you are seeing today is a generation brain dipped on this stuff.
Then the lazy union chickens would get jealous and demand the industrious chickens "spread the feed around". The industrious chickens would then have to lay twice as many eggs for half the feed. Day and night they'd pump out eggs while the union chickens continued to call them greedy and gripe about how they're being exploited.
I do know Tyler Durden
