An Epic Failure: Detroit Public Schools

Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb has been trying to fix the city’s public schools which are historically awful. At times, it seems that he is the only one trying to fix a school system that is failing its students.
The Detroit Federation of Teachers has consistently called for Bobb’s removal. The radical socialist group, By Any Means Necessary, makes every effort to stir up racial division and strife. One of BAMN’s leaders was nearly elected president of the teachers union, which shows how radical the union has become.

While making of this film series, we met a recent graduate of Detroit Public Schools who couldn’t read. Sadly, he blamed himself. But we know that a whole lot of adults are to blame, too. There were dozens of teachers and administrators who moved him down the assembly line, and were happy to hand him a worthless diploma after he reached the end of the line. All the while, the adults collected their paychecks, enjoyed their generous benefit packages and took comfort knowing that tenure would keep them secure in their jobs.
Detroit’s education system perpetuates the cycle of misery that has gripped the city for years.
After watching these films, ask yourself if America can continue being a great nation when many of its schools and communities are rotting from within.

The easiest way to fix the educational system would be to cut the Department of Education, return control to the local level and outlaw unions!
I don't know how Robert Bobb musters the energy to go to work everyday, having to face what he faces. Bobb is a smart, decent guy, and he's doing the Lord's work in Detroit. It's just too bad the Devil has so much help there.
The schools are a mess. The homes are also a mess. If you manage to hire and retain the best teachers in the world, but the kids come from single parent homes (for generations), live in public housing and on public assistance, and are surrounded by nothing but gang violence, the results the teachers achieve will still be meager. Fix the homes and the schools will follow. Trying to fix the schools without fixing the homes is a band-aid on a sucking chest wound.
The schools won't change even if the homes do. You can have the richest, whitest, 2-parent family community and the publik skoolz will still stink the way they are ran today.

I know it was parody, but I think a part of my soul died reading this because somewhere out there somebody really types like this.
I have two family members who work in public education. Fortunately, they work in schools that actually, y'know, teach kids. (Doing what they were designed to do? Shocking!) However, even they agree that the system's got serious flaws and corruption going on even in the good schools.
You'd think people would scrutinize their kids' education more with blatant examples like Detroit's school system.
Democrats have to dumb down the next generation of voters. That way, it will be cheaper on the election cost!
Where is the money going that was meant to imporve these children's education? These schools haven't changed in 30 years! They are still dumps with incompetent teachers, frought with waste.
Hold the local districts responsible for the quality of education for these children. I agree – Disband The Dept of Ed, and the Unions.
Tax base is gone, work ethic is gone, comon sense no where to be found, largest population of Muslims in USA. Major kick butt attitude needs doing fast, but being as Detroit is the arm pit of Michigan and mid west, do not hold your breathe.
Bad schools and bad teachers are everywhere. The real difference is the home life of the students. If the parents don't care about the kids, the kids will know it and in return will care about nothing.
The most distrubing and disgusting part is how so many teachers want more! more! more! when they know it will not do any good and will only keep them employeed, lighten their work load and line their pockets.
I live in a town where education is a priority of the parents (and we have loads of bad teachers, every one hires tutors) we recently hired a new high school principal who came from a town with lots of losers. His first open house night he commented "Wow I am surprised to see such a crowd. In my old school we would only get about a 30 percent turn out". Ask the teachers in Detroit how many parents make appointments to talk about "progress"?
I am glad to see Detroit doing so well now they have gotten rid of those evil white folks. They have really blossomed.
I'd like to know one thing in Detroit that hasn't been an epic failure. It's a classic example of what unionization and socialist ideas bring and what's worse is that our POTUS is basically using places like Detroit and Illinois as a model for what he wants the whole country to be like.
Unitl there is accountability of the teachers and what they are producing as graduates, this cycle will continue until the entire graduating class is illiterate. The answer is not more money and hard earned tax dollars, but the defeat of the unions and their strangle hold on the educational system.
To even have to think about having remedial reading classes for graduates of high school is evidence enough to see what the problem is……………tenure should be outlawed and unless your classroom meets certain metrics as to accomplishment………..no raises, no additional benefits and yes NO jobs for these "teachers" that are merely milking a system for themselves and leaving our children in a state of continued reliance on the labor of others for their subsistence.
This expose' is a real eye opener as to the depths our "public" school system(s) have fallen and should be a call for all that care to see that an end to this corruption is swift and direct…………….starting with the unions and their parasitic ilk!!

I think everyone in Michigan should thank the Ford family for their Pubic Skrewl situation. After all it was (one of the) Henry Ford who said that the purpose of public education was not to produce good students but rather good government subjects. So for all you Ford owners out there just remember you help support the continual ignorance and stupidity of your own children.
What a sad situation! No amount of money can correct this. It has to start with teachers who are willing to do their job. I didn't pay that much for my COLLEGE education! Recently, I saw a startling comparison. Hiroshima was utterly destroyed by the A-Bomb dropped in August of 1945 and tens of thousands of Hiroshima residents were killed. Today, it's a modern, bustling, successful city about the same size as Detroit used to be. The only evidence of that bomb still in existence is at the Hiroshima memorial and museum. Now look at pictures of Detroit which was hit by an even worse disaster—a "progressive" government. It's a cesspool with a simply awful crime rate, failed public "services," and looks like the whole city outside of downtown is the one hit by an A-bomb. This can be repeated in EVERY American city that's been run for any length of time by people on the left. Not a single one is a place of which to be proud.
It's not just Detroit. It's all across the country. As the news editor said, there are adult parasites feeding off the system at the expense of kids. Jacksonville, Florida has numerous teachers, not just students, who are illiterate.
It is not all the teachers fault.
Too many students come from homes where the parents don't give a damn about them and are certainly not making them do their homework.
I am not impressed with many teachers, but the community is more at fault than the teachers.

A few years ago the CEO of Detroit Schools ok'd renovations of the office building. They spent $50,000 alone on MARBLE RESTORATION while students couldn't even share books because there were none.

Not the easiest solution, but the most straightforward. I agree with you on this, but it will not be easy. (I'm not trying to be critical; I do understand that you don't really think it will be a cinch to accomplish these things.) My own hunch: if Gov. Christie can accomplish de-certifying or outlawing the teachers' union then other states will pick up on it, especially if union horror stories can be disseminated to the voters. As for abolishing the Department of Education, I can't imagine any US president tackling it. Even if it did happen, I think the Democrats would run on the issue of re-establishing it, blaming Conservatives for hating children (except, of course, when they are in utero). I am astonished at how fast our Federal Government can get a new bureaucracy up and running.

Yes, because we have educators who: 1) Prefer cultural indoctrination to learning, 2) Prefer self-esteem to learning, 3) Prefer earning big salaries to teaching, 4) Are contemptuous of true mainstream values, 5) Consider themselves expert in curriculum development while rejecting accountability to the cretinous hoards who could not possibly grasp the arcane logic they espouse. If you want to have some fun, read the doctoral theses of some of these people. "Systemic paradigmatic learning modes" and such. I remember one mentioned in Edwin Newman's book concerning "modeling oral fragments." As Mr. Newman pointed out, this does not deal with bad teeth but with using expressions like "Gee" and "Wow."
While the situation is dire, there is hope, even for those most adversely affected. NYC has some terrific schools in the poorest districts–thanks to the efforts of private citizens and no thanks to the teacher unions. So it can be done.

Does anyone know if a case could be made to decertify the union, get the teachers on some sort of incentive pay program, and clean out the deadwood? I’m thinking for something like that to happen it would have to take Congressional or Presidential action. Maybe with President Obama’s renewed focus on education and his WTF initiative, this would be the opportunity for Obama to show he is serious. It is abundantly clear the union in Detroit really don’t care about the children, only care about the union and its power. The city of Detroit has been rife with corruption for many years.

The thing is, in an equal society, you don't have to bring up issues anymore. Everything that has to do with genes, an extra X chromosome, etc. doesn't matter.
So, basically, they should be able to teach kids all of those things (math, language, etc.), because inequality is thusly no longer a problem. Tolerance is ignorance. And by the teachers bringing it up in the first place, the kiddies think of it as special treatment–which leads to the kid being called a teacher's pet and bullied more. It shouldn't matter.
Bullying just needs to be stopped, automatically, not matter who or what the kids are. It makes the classroom quieter and leads to more hours of progress with work. It also means fewer nurse visits and fewer lawsuits; fewer suicides and better grades.
I mean, honestly–by bringing it up, even in a good way, it's harming the kids. If they teach them and just have a no-bullying rule, everything is dandy.
It would also help if they could bloody well bring back tag at least; the less energy the kids have, the less agitation and nerves build up. Better grades. Also, fresh air is great for the mind.

I grew up in Detroit, in the 1970s after the riots; my mom went back to work so that my siblings and I could attend Catholic Schools. My friends' parents camped out a the prestige public high schools to ensure the were able to get in—and their educations were still lacking, though their indoctrination was first rate. This, with two parents in each household.
The new Governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder, has a full plate, but those who know him tell me he has some of those Chris Christie genes; for the sake of my hometown, I hope and pray that he does.

The handwriting has been on the DPS wall since the 1960's . When you have people insisting on pushing 'the self esteem movement' ( remember: 'I Am Somebody', 'Say It Loud, I'm Black and Proud', and so on) without ( in most cases) mastering the 3 R's, and being able to prove it…..you wind up with a system like Detroit's. For example, when speaking English, properly, is called 'acting white'…..you know that the system is in a world of trouble and condemns students to an underclass/ 'plantation' existence for a long time.

No, race is real and it isn't just skin color. The FDA approved a heart medication just for Blacks. Forensic scientists can ID race by skeletal remains. We can observe that their brains work differently – more emotional.
Here's what I find strange (and some what telling).
We are told that our health care system is in such a shambles that it required Democrat strong arming, and "covert" tactics to remedy this horrible situation. A situation that, according to polls, satisfactory to 85% of those who had health insurance.
However, we have an education system that is atrocious (both the left and the right agree), and one group seems to be dragging their feet.
I guess it's more important to build ANOTHER monument to themselves, and bask in the glow of the mushroom cloud they have created, rather than clean up the monument they already have.

If you want to look at it scientificly, we are all human. Same body structure, same organs, and all are genetically compatable. The only differences are height, weight, skin color, eye color, and hair color. But even with those differences, we are all still the same. Since all those difference are only on the surface and nothing more.
Do you not know sh!t about genetics. Afterall, there is a big difference between races and genetic traits. And all human races are just different genetic traits, since we are all the same race of species.

Big government has done such a good job with education, we should put them in charge of health care. We'll get the same results – the rich and politically powerful will use private doctors, while the rest of us will have to settle for those working for the government.

The article says that the kids can't read and most are functionally illiterate. The parents are drug addicts and users and most are criminals. The kids for the most part have no idea who their father is. The only employment is crime. How is paying the teachers more money going to solve this problem? I remember when the unions said that they need a commuter train in Detroit to bring the people in, it will revitalize the city. Now a stupid brand new train goes around Detroit with no riders kind of like a model train. Paying the teachers more will have the same result as the train. A bunch of highly paid teachers with no students. Detroit is a toilet and if you live there you like the sewage. Normal families moved away years ago.
Detroit is the Haiti of the USA and unfortunately they must like it that way because they keep electing "leaders" who have brought about this condition.
