New Governors Will Have Hands Full Reforming Education, Spending
by Kyle OlsonWith most of the media focusing their 2010 election coverage on whether or not Republicans will reclaim one or both houses of Congress, the 37 states that are about to elect (or re-elect) a governor get lost in the shuffle.
If Republicans do as well as projected, most observers expect gridlock to descend upon Washington D.C. That means the real action and drama will be at the state level, where newly-elected governors will have to deal with high unemployment, shrinking budgets and public employee unions that will fight as if very existence is at stake (which it is).

Here’s a brief overview of what’s at stake for the governors of three states.
Michigan: The Wolverine State’s manufacturing-based economy has been ravaged by free trade agreements and obstinate unions. Since 2000, Michigan has lost over 900,000 jobs. The current unemployment rate is 13 percent, and unlikely to drop below double digits any time soon.
The state’s public employee pension funds are awash in red ink. The Mackinac Center reports that the state has underfunded pension plans by almost $12 billion. The state’s next governor will almost surely be Michigan businessman Rick Snyder who ran under the slogan, “One tough nerd.” Come November 3, Mr. Snyder will face one tough job.
Ohio: Like its neighbor to the north, the Buckeye State is barely hanging on. The unemployment rate is 10 percent, which only exacerbates the state’s “structural budget shortfall” that could reach $8 billion by 2012. On top of that, the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) has $40 billion in unfunded liabilities.
On the bright side, Ohio was recently awarded $400 million in federal funds from the Obama administration’s “Race to the Top” initiative. The bad news: after four years, that money will dry up. Since Ohio spends “49 percent more on district-level bureaucracy than the national average,” there will have to be some big changes to the public education system.
That last statistic comes from John Kasich’s campaign website. Given that he’s likely to be the next governor, Ohio citizens can take comfort from the fact that at least he’s aware of the problem. Nevertheless, Mr. Kasich can expect to go a full 12 rounds with the teachers unions. Ohioans better hope it’s his hand that’s raised in victory at the end of that heavyweight matchup.
New York: If New Yorkers really want to see great drama, they should forget about Broadway and focus their attention on what happens in Albany, where state number crunchers will try to restore fiscal sanity after a $9 billion deficit for this year, and a projected $8.2 billion deficits for next year.
Here’s how the New York Times summed up the Empire State’s outlook in the paper’s September 1, 2010 edition:
“New York’s residents will not have their benefits cut, [Republican candidate for state comptroller Harry J.] Wilson says, citing the constitutional guarantee. But over time, residents will see more cuts in public services and less money for infrastructure maintenance as public dollars are diverted to fill the hole in the pension fund….The state’s plan to borrow billions more from the pension fund to get through this year’s fiscal squeeze, meanwhile, will drive the fund deeper into the hole.”
Yes, there are bleak times ahead for many states. On Tuesday night, after the cheering crowds leave and the TV camera lights go out, newly-elected governors might break out in a cold sweat when they realize what they’re up against.
But if they’re smart, they’ll pick up the phone Wednesday morning and call New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to find out how it’s done.

Public school funding here in Ohio have been a massive sore spot for the past decade. The teachers unions got chutzpah. I hope Kasich is up to the challenge, too.
No one will have a bigger job than Meg Whitman, California is in ruins and the Calif Ed system is at the bottom of the ash heap!
The Expert Knows
I'm just curious.
Is there any state in which the Unions have not caused a massive budget deficit with their ponzi pensions and teachers Union leech sucking benefits?
Reminder: Guam is not a state.
Clone Chris Christie
Here in AZ, Governor Brewer will keep her post and hopefully get this SB1070 business wrapped up so we can start deporting illegal democrat voters.
The Boys from Bayonne
Hmm. Has a ring to it!
Michigan's job losses have little to do with free trade agreements and everything to do with the fact that the labor unions priced Michigan's skilled automotive workers out of the market. There's a reason, after all, why so many new auto plants are being built in places like Alabama, Kentucky, Georgia… heck, even neighboring Indiana… rather than Michigan. Why hire a Michigan assembly worker at $100K a year in salary and benefits when that'll get you two people in Kentucky who will each be just as good as the Michigander once he gets up to speed in a few months?
We need real honest reform in our education system in this country and not foolish bullshite slogans like no child left behind or race to the top….
We need a commission of the top educators in this country to get together in the same room, check the egos at the door and come with an effective battle plan going forward…there can be sacred cows, no union protectionism but a real plan to reform the entire operation and administration of not just the public schools but to some extent, our universities as well from top to bottom.
America is fast falling behind the rest of the world in the education of our country’s youth, it will be soon the cause of our permanent decline if we don’t change the current trajectory….
You can throw Pennsylvania in there with NY, Ohio, and Michigan.
8 years of Ed Rendell in the unions pocket are over…….thanks be to term limits………and the Good Lord.
The question now comes to the following…
How will we govern?
Can we govern?
Will they not make a mess of things behind the scenes to say that the Tea Party is at fault to gain control for real in 2 years?
Publius
It's going to take a whole lot of patriots to stem this red ink tide. Be there or be square.
Publius I don’t have to tell you that is the Democratic Socialist two year plan…
Blame the conservatives and keep the executive throne another four years…
I thought Guam tipped over….
Change is coming. And soon.
No …ALL states have this Ball & Chain tied to their ankles …Governors need to find the key to unlock the anklet …it's called Privatizing. Out Source ALL "Non-Teacher" jobs to the Private Sector (non-union) and get rid of 30% of the administrators …also make all Non-teachers pay for their own health care, pensions, etc. …NO more perks. This will definitely get the attention of the NEA and individual teachers as well …and they will be scared, very scared.
Guam is an unincorporated US territory. #1 industry – Japanese tourism. #2 – US Military…They have a "non-voting" rep in the House.
lovely diving. Got my fill of it in 4 months in a tent on Andersen AFB in the early 70's…lol
Well Whitman is behind 45% to 49%. She'll have to win first and at the very best all we get is a RINO. The state assembly and senate whenever confronted with a strong governor who tries to control spending get's wickedly vilified in the willing media. This state I live in may just sink to ruins no matter who gets in…. just Brown will get it ruined quicker.
The States can fire all of their Teachers at the end of Spring… and hire Non-Union Teachers at the start of Fall.
Problem solved.
Ah, one of the Democrat's finest, Hanky Johnson and his drooling blather.
They narrowly avoided that disaster by having Moochelle O and her "Ginormous ass" stand on the other side to keep it from tipping.
They better start with the school district in Buffalo. I heard on Fox this morning that the union wrote in the contract authorizing $9 million dollars for the teachers and their familes to have plastic surgery, botox treatments etc. and the tax payers are funding this. Can you imagine? Also there were only 8 doctors authorized to do this and 500 people partook in the treatments. Thats $18,000 per person.
Phucking outrageous.
Chicken and Dumplings tonight.
How's the Pot roast?
Got a late start …was just going to pull it out of the oven. Will let ya know.
Meg's weakest link is immigration, and while that is a big issue especially in CA, it won't be any worse than it is now. She will be the fiscal conservative that I thought Arnold would be so many miserable years ago.
We do not have to govern, all we need do is stop the out of control spending and growth of government.
Do not extend the debt ceiling…
Kyle, if you ask Chris Christie how it's done, he'll tell you do it like a typical big corporation: focus on quarterly returns at the expense of the long view. That's why he pulled out of the tunnel project rather than negotiate for cost certainty. Overruns are scary, as The Big Dig in Massachusetts proves, but that should have been addressed with the threat of a shutdown rather than run away from like a girly man.
Kyle-did you have to ruin my dinner by putting a picture of George the SoreAss with your article? Well, now I know Ill have at least 2 kings of stupid to take target practice with tomorrow night. SoreAss and Krugwoman.
Rendell the union thug. 28% approval rating now. And I still cant beleive that thug got elected governor after what he did with the military absentees in Florida in 2000. Shows you yet another case of extreme media neglect.
Smith-especially south and west of Phoenix. I live near Avondale and un fortunately Grijalva is my congressman(the best friend illegals ever had). The same scumbag who called for a boycott of Arizona after sb1070. sb 1070 WILL win in the USSC as long as the current court makeup remains the same (5-4 in favor). dONT COUNT on the 9th circus court of communism . Good news is the USSC always overturns them.
Petro-It also will not tip over, in spite of what the clueless idiot congressdork Hank Johnson might feel.
Further and beyond education, which will suffer, the LEFT, IMO will do every thing in their power to
crash the entire US economy.
They have attempted to cause downturns before, when the Right was in power, however NEVER in
one of those instances have we been quite as vulnerable as we are now.
Their behavior on economic issues IMO is a TRUE test of their PATRIOTISM, and they should be called
to task for their actions over the next two years, in that vein.
FIGHT on PATRIOTS!!!
.
Hopefully Justice Scalia will be one of the justices who preside over this.
The massive increase in payouts to school sysytems doesn't match the decline in the school-aged population over the years. It just doesn't. Schools built by union members, run by union members, and patrolled by union members, all with until-death-do-we-part pensions, with the otherwise empty seats being filled by non-English speaking illegals (or anchor babies), are each sufficient reasons to revolt against state and local school taxes, and to demand that the Department of Education be dismantled. What a scam.
What a knucklehead. Do you really believe this? Or are you just trolling? Sheesh. Christie must scare you.
There is no benefit to 30 or fewer kids per class room, if the kids are getting decent mental stimulation. Small class sizes are needed because the lackluster curriculum is too boring to one half and unintelligible to the other half. Put dropouts to work in the fields, roads, and restrooms. Devise intelligent and reasonable monitoring of teacher performance. If a teacher can't cut it, s/he should be banished to the fields, etc. with their former students. A class with 40-50 motivated, English-speaking students has been proven to work.

THE ANSWER TO YOUR PUZZLING DILEMMA IS SIMPLE, A Criminal is a criminal, Whether their collar is white, blue, red, yellow, brown, black, or the color of sweat, foreign or domestic, all should be held accountable!!!!!!!!!!! George Soros should be the first CONSTITUTIONAL Criminal Put to trial…………………………………He has """"BLATANTLY"""" tried to influence the outcomes of elections in America……..HIS motive is to "OVERTHROW THE CONSTITUTION" …TRY HIM AND INCARCERATE HIM, if/when found guilty!!!!!!!
The difference between the business climate in Indiana and Michigan is enormous! Indiana has a pro-growth, pro-business governor in Mitch Daniels. Michigan's governor Jenn Granholm, who is one of the biggest idiots when it comes to how a business works. Check this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZcMzL0Hx9M for a video of her being schooled by businessman Steve Wynn.
Which is why I pay $4800 a year to educate my children! Go, Corbett! He was tough on crime as AG! Hopefully, he will be just as tough on some of these criminal legislators!
