Billions for Teacher Unions, Nothing for Students
by Kyle OlsonHere’s a story problem to get kids ready for the new school year:
If Congress borrows $10 billion to bail out the public schools, and if toilet paper costs fifty cents a roll, how many rolls of toilet paper will each of the nation’s 132,000 K-12 public schools receive?
The answer: Zero. Zip. Zilch.

The average American can be forgiven for thinking that the $10 billion “edujobs” bill signed into law last week by President Obama would directly benefit the nation’s school children. That’s certainly how the National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel spun it: “As a result of this vote, we expect to see less crowded classrooms, reinstated bus routes and restored education programs and services,” Van Roekel said.
What a windfall for the kids, right? But how to make sense of this headline in The New York Times: “Back to School? Bring Your Own Toilet Paper.” Just five days after the $10 billion bailout became law, the Times reports that schools all across the country are sending out shopping lists to parents and students, requiring them to help stock the janitorial closets that have been stripped bare by shrinking school budgets. Wasn’t that money supposed to prevent this kind of thing?
It’s a fact that school districts all across the country have smaller budgets to work with, due to the aftermath of “The Great Recession.” It’s also a fact that unlike most American workers who have had to take less pay and fewer benefits to keep their jobs, many teacher unions all across the country have refused to make any concessions (i.e. accepting a freeze in pay or contributing to their health insurance costs). Left with no other options to balance their budgets, school districts were forced to cut teaching jobs. This resulted in a “crisis” and led to Congress’ $10 billion bailout.
With Congress pumping all this new money into the education system, the teacher unions can forego any unpleasant concessions and can protect the status quo. Meanwhile, parents and students are forced to stretch their back-to-school budgets to help stock the restrooms with toilet paper and Kleenex.
Despite all the spin, it is clear that the “edujobs” bill was simply a bailout for the intractable teacher unions dressed up as being “for the children.” Once again, the nation’s school kids are asked to do with less so the teacher unions can do with more.
Welcome back to school.

Think about the children!
(Isn't that the old left wing mantra?)
Those poor, terlit paperless children!
Not to worry, with the introduction of Sharia, they can all learn to wipe with their left hands.
How do you spell Democrat? O-R-G-A-N-I-Z-E-D C-R-I-M-E
I wonder, is SherylCrow behind this?
Could this be a paper-less CONspiracy?
Is CONgress involved?
Only in America.
With a a handful of exceptions….public schools suck. Parents, if possible think about 'homeschooling' your children. If you can't do that….make the effort to supervise student's homework, and create your own supplementary curriculum. Seek out wise parents in your neighborhood for help , or a librarian at your neighborhood library for help. Help is available if you seek it. REFUSE to have your children be victims of inadquate government schools.
They'll think about the "children" when the children starting paying Union dues and contributing to Democrat coffers.
Big Education only means big salaries for union hacks; not supplies for kids.

Rush was reporting yesterday that there are districts that don't plan to do anything with the money from that bill. They're going to sit on it. Some will even lay off additional teachers anyhow.
I like the following slogan: Save a _________ (teacher, policeman, firefighter). Fire a bureaucrat!
I'll bet there is TP in the Teacher's Bathroom.
More union payback and vote buying by this White House…?
WHOD'A THUNK IT!
After paying thousands in school taxes, I still have to pay thousands more for parochial school tuition, and on top of that dress codes, school supplies, arts & crafts fund, fund raisers, novels (the school supplies text books, but for lit. class we buy them).
And you know what? Thank the good Lord we're able to keep her out of the public school system.
You know, you may be on to something there.

This is part of why I home school my kids.
Nah, they have fancy bidets. Can't be getting those precious hands too close to such filth!
There is actually a school here, in Florida, that had toilet paper on the list of school supplies for the parents to buy!!!! What the$hit is going on here??!! Billions of $$ coming into Florida via the Lottery and the government and STILL the parents have to supply the schools with essentials???!!!
NEVER Shake Hands with Sheryl Crow…
EWWWWW!!!!
Well said sir!
Isn't he always?:-D
.
The teacher's union grand larceny bill has all but guaranteed that any local school levies will go down in flames. Told my neighbor, who sits on the local school board, that's what to expect and she was none too happy.
The appetite for gorging at the public trough never ends.
Several years ago the school in the district I live in put up a vote to consolidate the middle school and all the elementary schools into a single campus located up at the high school. It failed, they had a second vote, it passed.
They promised us that once that building was completed that would be all the building space they would need for like the next 25 years.
Year after that, turns out they need new surface on the track and field complex, and refurbish the pool at the high school. And once that was done, everything would be set.
Year after that, turns out there isn't enough room in the new buildings, so they have to build annexes.
It just never ends.
I don't know about the school district the author lives in, but up here in upstate NY I have never seen a cut to a school budget in my entire life. True, occasionally they get voted down and have to go with what they call an austerity budget, but that's not a cut. It just means they can't increase spending by as much as they want.
Everyday, I am more and more grateful that my own son is past all this "public education" crap. The long lists of "what your child needs for this semester" in supplies, to the begging letters home of "we really REALLY could use these items.."…bah. I remember my mother reading one of those "whining notes" from my son's seventh grade class, and she looked at me shocked..all I said was "this is normal- did you get these when I was in school?"…her answer? "no!"
My sister-in-law is a teacher….she began defending this practice, among other things. She and my brother have no children of their own, but do seem to enjoy lecturing *me* on the "proper" ways to rear my son. The sister-in-law's "master degree in education" being touted as the biggest reason for her being able to "direct" me. At one Thanksgiving I ever so sweetly explained to her that once she gave birth, she could chime in on parental advice, but until then, STFU. My mother was mortified. My father delighted. My brother outraged. My husband and son? Grinned, and passed the taters
I'm thinking the next time I send in a tax payment, I'll just send them the equivalent value in toilet paper.
My kids are all grown now. But if then was now, NO WAY THEY'D WALK IN A SCHOOL. They are far too precious to me to turn their EDUCATION over to Union hacks whose only goal is the next pay raise and whose only mantra is to WHINE ABOUT THE BURDEN OF THEIR JOB AND HOW LITTLE THEY ARE PAID.
THEY ARE KILLING EDUCATION IN AMERICA AND HANDICAPPING OUR CHILDREN FOR LIFE.
YOU CAN TELL WHEN A YOUNG PERSON POSTS HERE..FUNCTIONAL ILLITERATES WHO HAVE NO ABILITY TO REASON AND ZERO COMMON SENSE.
WE GOTTA GET THE UNIONS OUT OF OUR SCHOOLS GUYS. THIS HAS TO BE A PRIORITY.
More Corruption from The Obama socialist Democrat Administration!
Check out how the Union Bosses are living! I'll bet they have gold threaded toilet paper!
You want to really do something to help the schools. Deport all the illegals that attend public schools and their parents who don't pay any taxes. 20 million non taxpaying leaches and their offspring gone would be a huge help to schools and to society in general.
More for teachers and less for educating children. The unions are holding our schools and children hostage. Give $1.00 for education, $.01 for the real problem and $.99 for the teachers and unions.
what do they do if a student DOESN'T bring toilet paper?
The schools here in NY are just bottomless money pits, thanks to the Teacher's Unions and the exorbitant salaries of "Administrators". And the kids educations aren't worth anything.
It must be embarassing to have a liberal in the family.
I think he said on to something, not on something. but then again, those aren't mutually exclusive.
I'm going to guess that who ever wrote that on the bathroom wall didn't use a brown Marks-a-lot. Little heathens. They don't need toilet paper. Let them use the pages out of their text books. They don't read them anyhow and most of it was written by left wingers that have an agenda. The other option is let them go home or go to the nearby gas station quicky mart. I'm sure the local businesses wouldn't mind the well behaved little citizens using their facilities. Isn't it absolutely amazing we're discussing this subject. This is straight out of the 1960s, 70s, 80s Soviet Union list of problems.
Same here Ed — except I've got 4 of them!
Maybe they should get that Hollywood "1 square" kook to go to the schools and give a demo?
So… While the unions suck the budget dry…
They teach our kids a bunch of clap-trap so they will accept it when they become voters. There is no God, murder your baby, praise homosexuals, be politically correct, global warming, embrace illegals, big government is the answer to everything. They don't have time for the three RRRs any more, they are too busy turning out idiots that can't speak, write or form a cognizant thought. Big government is their god
Safe Schools? http://usataxpayer.org/?0039156365
House Bill HR4530 – Congress is supporting NAMBLA, GLSEN and LGBT. HR4530 is disguised as a "School Non-Discrimination Bill." Who could possibly be against "non-discrimination," right? The main drive behind this bill is to FORCE SCHOOLS TO TEACH children about ALL forms of PERVERTED SEXUAL BEHAVIOR. Parents will not be able to discriminate or "opt out" their children. YOU WILL HAVE NO RECOURSE!
HR4530 – Congress Pushing Sexual Perversion… http://usataxpayer.org/?0092081630
… and yet they print out those 2000+ page bills… how many times?????
My God. We taxpayers spend wiser than the Unions and DC does.
What's to stop our kids from creating their own union? I think I may be onto something here.
The entire concept of lowering taxes = pay raise for ALL do they not get?
they get detention.
They may want to teach the children to wipe with their left hand.
It will probably become a black market item, sold in the alley behind the school. T.P. dealers. The kid would probably get expelled and the parents would be arrested for child abuse…..or union abuse…..or a humungous fine that would go to the union, of course.
I consider it a very wise investment, pennies on the dollar. Not only does she get a first rate education, she gets a chance to mature with out the progressives in the public system getting their fangs into her.
lol! Pay them in TP for all the cr*p they throw at us!
"Not to worry, with the introduction of Sharia, they can all learn to wipe with their left hands."
If Sharia is instituted, at least we'll save a lot of money on education as girls won't be allowed to attend. ):
This CON makes Bernie Madoff look innocent.
We send tons of money (taxes) to the Federal government. They give tons of OUR money to the union (but it's FOR THE CHILDREN). The school doesn't get anything, so bring your own T.P. The union bosses pay themselves and the rest goes into the Dem bank vault. We're contributing to the Democrat Party!!!! What a SCAM!
That is truly unbelievable!! It's going to get to the point where everyone just says, "To hell with this" and doesn't do it. What will they do then?
I think people just want to know WHERE all the money is going? We send $1 to the Federal Government, Department of Education, and then send us 70-cents back with instructions about what to teach. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?!
By the way, we homeschooled our three children as well. I wish more families could.
the students are just an excuse for the growth of a socialist system…
And to also bring an endless supply of tasty youngsters to be 'mentored' by their so-called 'teachers'. While it is true most go into education for noble reasons ( dear old dad used to say 'if you can't do it, teach it', but then again, he was a self starter type) the Progressives have always seen this as the First Front in the destruction of the Capitalist model.
'If you do not have the children, then you have nothing'
Adolf Hitler/Mao Tse Tung/Josef Stalin…
I was actually eating a freaking sandwich when the picture loaded. Lost my appetite. Breitbart should not put pictures like that during lunch and the other equally offensive ones of Nancy Pelosi. Her pic almost makes me puke!
Did you not see the image? Nuff said
Allmost? My gag reflex kicks in at the mention of her name
I can't wait for sharia, I'm going to go to San Fransicko just to bounce a few rocks off of Nazi Piglosi's head, gosh we have so much to look forward to.
Wouldn't truth be much easier, better. I mean the lies are beginning to contradict the lies, requiring lying about the last lie.
Hmmm, isn't that how it is with our teleprompter actor..
It's the same lies repeated time after time when they want to spend more of our money…."we need money for the Teachers or Firemen or Policemen and you don't want us to lay them all off do you!?" If the money was actually for them everytime the Progressives said it was, they would all be making $500,000/year and our school system wouldn't be getting worse each year even as we dump billions more into it annually!
When she speaks or O speaks, I swear to G*d I have to mute the TV as fast as I can. High speed chase in Dallas on Fox right now.
I think the pic is hilarious!
Big a$$, overbloated, progressive marxist unions – 10,000,000,000
Kids stuck in crappy US public schools – 0
Same here.
That's the special progessive ink!!!!
It is working here in AZ. Had lots of them leave ahead of the enactment of SB1070. Our class size is smaller, our welfare rolls are lighter,,,,and guess what,,,,,the boycott had no effect whatsoever. Our hotel booking rates in May and June were up 10% and 12% respectively.
Arizona is doing something about it, 1 down 49 to go.
Or, by Obama's count 1 down 56 to go!!!
Am, Tex… "Functional illiterates who have no ability to reason and zero common sense" adequately describes 98% of all liberals. Kinda funny how the liberal education system turns out folks who are just like them isn't it? Perhaps this is why the schools are trying to teach morality these days?
I wouldn't bet on it, but maybe it's different if you work in an inner city school.
Don't forget the school fundraisers. We get hit up to buy cookie dough every year by our two nephews.
The problem is not the money. Between 1961 and 2005 real spending on primary and secondary public school education increased 247% in the U.S. (Dept. of Education). Clearly it isn't the money. The issue is always accountability and accountability can only occur within the context of competing ideas and methods. As long as government enjoys an exclusive market, then failure will always be the result as corruption is unavoidable when we are talking about liberals, government and closed markets.
They better hope their parents installs one of Sheryl Crowe's dining sleeves onto their school uniforms.
Pelosi must of used up all the TP wile trying to clean up all the crap that spews out her mouth,, but then again how could she clean her self up from the never ending spew.
Did I hear that folks in Monroe County Schools in Bloomington IN (liberal and left leaning) raised the $$ for sports while the schools let teachers go… Really? Now that is the elite's logic. Must keep up the appearance…as long as we look good…who cares if we are intelligent.
Did I just read that we are spending precious tax revenue on Unions…Really? Now how does a Union contribute to my child's education? Must keep up the appearance…that the the elite's logic…as long as the special interest gets richer…who cares if the educational system fails and the children suffer.
I can not resist…
We need to all contribute some TP to wipe off the stain of liberal policies!
They will be fined $10 for every day without paper, to be handed over to the union reps.
You mean the Teacher's Union wouldn't even give their paying members TP? Shameful.
That was the case 10 years ago when I worked at a school here in the Upper Midwest. We all talk about voting them out in the 2010 and 2012 elections.
We also need to start holding public school administrators and teachers accountable. I know the new Superintendent got an earful from me when they called about their proposed levies and referendums. I made sure I got out and voted them down even in a snow storm!!
You are more than welcome to take your kids out of public school.
From the sounds of it, she's the embarrassment of the family.
When you come up with a plan to actually identify these 20 million people and deport them, you might have a point.
Ooohh MY, MY, MY ppk……I just had a feeling about you from the beginning, you'e my kinda gal,
lol, Wish I could'a been a fly on the wall for that one. Making your dad grin
and pass the taters
is worth all the crap from a few other family members, isn't it? There are some who never know
where the boundaries are, unless we show them, like a new puppy that p's on the rug occasion-
ally there are those whose nose we must rub in the urine so that they may understand their place
in the pecking order. ;-D
.
.
I'm sure your kids are real shining stars.
I have put my two boys through K-6 and now they are in high school and middle. Each and every year for both the teachers would send home with each kid a long list of school supply items they "would like for us to buy". It wasn't required, but highly, highly recommended. Schools have been cutting and slicing and cost shifting for a long time. Meanwhile, the fat cat unions are building their dynasty.
There's something really wrong here.
I'm going to write a check to the teachers unions today! But first I'm going to wipe my butt with it before I mail it!
Well…at first, yes. But my husband made me realize the potential hilarity that normal boring family gatherings could actually have…by baiting our "liberals".
My son did the final nail in the coffin so to speak last year- we had a potluck type of get together- we brought home made lasagna (its pertinent, I promise). Over dinner, my son was happily discussing his first hunting trip with his dad- my sister in law…absolutely horrified! She went on and ON about how we didn't need to hunt, blah blah blah…poor animals…so on, so forth. I sat quietly, ate my dinner, watched sis in law pontificate, and eat (my lasagna…see where I'm heading yet?) We changed subjects. Waited until after dessert. I know my sister in law, she asked for my recipe, wondering if I used eggplant, I said "nope…venison".
Not one single word has been said to me from my sister in law since. She did turn an interesting shade of green, however…
And yes- venison is quite tasty in tomato sauce based foods- not gamy in the least.
Those kids don't have square to spare…
So the unions helped this administration ram through Obamacare and Finance Reform by spending millions on Obama's campaign. This $10 billion pay-off is nothing more than a pay back to the unions to fund their "over gorged", "out-of-reality" pensions that their criminal union leaders have been promising. Once again, the honest, hardworking taxpayer is required to fork over his/her hard earned dollar to a Ponzi scheme that at some point in time will implode in the face of every American. Folks, this is really dangerous as this will lead to civil unrest. If you don't believe it, please take a look at Greece. I believe the rioting has been in the news a few times?
Well heck..its not like we have a choice, we're supporting every one/thing else <sigh> mother of necessity, and all that…
Time for the Union grifters to go. Period.
Well the Teachers need the money, so they can pay the dues, the NEA can funnel back to the DNC, to get more money for the Teahers, to give to the NEA, to send it back to the DNC to get more money.
This is really quite simple.
The problem extends beyond the NEA and teachers unions. It is the progressives and radicals like william aires that seek to use Education to indoctrinate and dumb down future generations, deprive them of the knowledge of our constitution and bill of rights so they will give up their individual freedoms and become part of the collective ruled by elites.
The next problem is directly due to illegal immigration. When three to four families live in single home with each family raising three children for a total of 12, their rent payment to the landlord does not contribute a sufficient amount of property taxes to the local school district. This means the budgets are always going to be in the red and require more taxes and bailouts.
I asked the question "Why won't the AACP and the Black Congressional Caucus work to give black children the education they need to complete equitably"? They called me a racist and a bigot. Maybe they didn't understand the question,(because they didn't get a good education).
HILLARIOUS!!!!!!
The government schools better get some toilet paper…what else would they print their worthless diplomas on?
My eldest daughter, now 25 graduated from Northern State University in Flagstaff. Very "earthy" town. She was liberalized of coarse. So she would come home with all this crap, and I would just explain that she neede to base her discussion on fact, not BS! Then I told her a little stroy that I had heard:
You are in school and you and your friend have the same class. You have worked really hard and are deserving of an A. Your friend just kind of skated through and was deserving of a C-. When you got your grad for the class you had a B, your friend's grade was a B. Everyone in class received a B. The teacher thought everyone that took the class should receive the same grade.
Of caorse she said that that wasn't fair. That she worked too hard and the friend did nothing!
I welcomed her to the Republican Party!
She really has finally seen the light!
They offer the NY Times as a substitute, but most students refuse to use something so filthy to wipe their B-hinds!
<DIV></DIV> <DIV>We, too, sent our oldest to college where she was duly liberalized. It was the biggest mistake we ever made. We didn't repeat it with the next two. Govt. schools are government schools, regardless the level.
</DIV> <DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV style=”FONT-FAMILY: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; FONT-SIZE: 10pt”>

What a travesty! There's a pot to piss in, but nothing to wipe with. How's the hope and change working out all you Obama supporters? Have fun paying for your kids' toilet paper.
Digital TP? I KNEW it was coming. Just "delete" afterwards and all bettuh. Signs and wonders.
These thugs make me sick. They are so piss poor; it's unbelievable.
Awwww, sweetness, its okay- I'll make you some lasagna too
And trust me…my "family" is never embarrassed by me- they support me. My relatives? Ehh…now that's their problem, I don't let it become mine. See how simple that is?
I can still picture my dad's grin too- made his day, truth be told LOL
And speaking of making days, you made mine, Ms Pone ;P thanks!
Over the next few political administrations, legislation will be introduced followed by Supreme Court rulings that will significantly reduce the power of the unions…… particularly NAFTA and the NEA. Public opinion is now against the "brotherhood". Any politician that votes for continued ordinance will be "unelected". Having said that…..
There IS a solution….that will bring RELENTLESS pressure to Congress. Home school your children within the neighborhood if you cannot afford to stay home. Our children are our most important future assets and should ALWAYS be our priority. (I am talking to responsible American parents here…not welfare ghetto rats and illegals). In addition the change in political administrations will NO LONGER ALLOW the bailouts of these unions. They will be finished !
Don't forget that the "bring supplies to the school" teaches a socialist lesson. Once the student hands over the supplies they cease to be owned by said student and now belong to everyone (the collective). In the old days (and I'm not that old!), there were some common supplies provided by the school, but everything you brought in belonged to you, end of story.
I smoke with my right hand.
I shake with my right hand, wipe with my left…what to do…what to do…
Are those nicotine fingers I see or what?
I have done that with my daughter since before she started kindergarten. I am also VERY proud to say she does not swallow every idiotic idea that her "teachers" spew until SHE checks out the facts!
We really must bust these unions. Their purpose has become to fleece the producers. Maybe it always was.
