Teachers Unions Fear Competition and Will be the Downfall of American Education
by Kyle OlsonThere is a weird dichotomy in American education: many teachers across the country impress upon their students that they must succeed for our nation to remain competitive in a global economy.
But at the same time, teachers unions fear, and downright besmirch, competition.
Competition is what has made America the greatest country in the world. Capitalist inventors have created new products to make money, not to mention improve society. Investors have put their money behind products that have great potential. It’s clear competition improves products and lowers cost.

So why do teachers unions fear competition?
Like the robber barons of the 20th Century, unions oppose choice because it will likely impact its monopoly on the market. About 85% of American kids go to traditional public schools – most of which are unionized.
Unions oppose competition among teachers and instead want the same rate of pay for employees, based on years of service, regardless of success or effectiveness. So the best teacher in the building is paid exactly the same as the worst. How does that foster improvement?
And lately, the unions have been critical of President Obama’s “Race to the Top” education reform initiative. Consider American Federation of Teachers’ president Randi Weingarten’s latest press release:
While we encouraged our local and state affiliates to be involved in every aspect of Race to the Top, we have always been troubled that this competition, by its very construct, leaves out millions of students across the country. Rather than picking winners and losers, our education policies should represent a comprehensive approach focused on preparing every student to succeed in college, work and life.
Let’s all hold hands, sing Labor’s favorite song, “Solidarity Forever,” and enjoy the ride on the sinking S.S. Public Education.
Previous AFT leaders have admitted there is a problem, but nobody from that union, or the National Education Association, have ever seemed willing to do anything meaningful about it. In 1989, AFT president Albert Shanker told this to the Wall Street Journal:
“It’s time to admit that public education operates like a planned economy, a bureaucratic system in which everybody’s role is spelled out in advance and there are few incentives for innovation and productivity. It’s no surprise that our school system doesn’t improve: It more resembles the communist economy than our own market economy.”
So the American public education system is closer to communism than capitalism, thanks to the teachers unions and union-enabling politicians.
It’s no wonder the system is failing in its obligation to educate American kids and prepare them to be future world leaders. Until the adults in the system realize why they’re there – to serve children – we should expect to see little difference.

No, they are afraid that competition will be the downfall of the teachers union.
If the teacher's unions had no part in causing the downfall of our educational system then competition wouldn't be necessary.
Teacher's Unions despise Capitalism? What a shock!! Next you will be telling me that the sun comes up in the morning.
Competition will not be the downfall of American education.
Education, however, will be the downfall of Teachers Unions.
Once people are educated to the facts surrounding the Teachers Unions, they are done. Stick a fork in 'em.
Yes.
It rises from the east. From Mecca.
Will be the downfall? Too late! They already are.
I would love to see the number of our elected leaders that send their little kiddies to private screwl.
Hypocrites.
That is why they are working hard too make sure all kids are indoctrinated instead of educated.
Teacher's unions have done more to harm children than any group in US history, they don't care about the kids they only care for their perpetual existence and the union mob boss bottom lines.
The union bailout bill serves two DNC purposes…
1) Buying permanent politically beholden union voters.
2) Erasing the paper trail of corruption between union pension fund managers/mob bosses, congressmen and senators.
If the bailout bill goes through guess what happens?
The union pension fund books will be effectively laundered clean by law and that means the congressmen, senators and union mob bosses that have stolen all of the pension money will get a get out of jail free card.
Nobody will be allowed to investigate any of these crimes if this becomes law and we the taxpayers will pay the price not the thieves.
Follow the money in the pension fund shortfalls and it will lead directly to democrat members of congress and the biggest federal ponzi scheme in history, this will make Madoff look like an amateur by comparison.
The time of the union has passed and we no longer need them, especially in government!
Exactly who are government employee and public school unions "collectively bargaining" against….?
YOU!
The Senate just gave the teachers unions an extra 10B today, now Queen Nancy is calling the house back from recess so they will have the tax payer funding before the elections in Nov.
"All that is necessary for the genocide of Whites is for Whites to accept the GOP nonsense about how race doesn't matter and color-blindness and all that other BS. NO OTHER RACE buys in to this. Why do you think you see organizations for EVERY RACE other than Whites? Better wake up. If Israel can conduct ethnic cleansing using US tax dollars why can we not ethnically cleanse the US to make it a White country?"
Hey jerk, you are a racist asshole and your posting privileges need to be revoked.

Ain't it fun the way Democrats buy their votes with taxpayer money? They do it right out in the open too.
Let er rip tater chip! …. Agreed.
Dems are allowed to send their kids to the very best of schools or homeschool them and we have to send our kids to these worthless teachers…..And they wonder why homeschooling is growing.
Funds go to public schools, etc based on the number of occupied seats during the first 45 days or so of each school semester. If they lose those occupants during that time period, they lose that student's funding, and I assume that is no paltry chunk of change. After the cutoff period, no sweat, funding is guaranteed for that seat. This I was told by a professor at a junior college when I asked why he didn't continue calling roll throughout the semester.
If students are home schooled, attend charter schools or private schools, there is less federal money allocated to a school. So it boils down to the bucks rather than the quality of education.
The Little Red School House rewards mediocrity and punishes achievement. Many teach because they lack the intelligence to survive in the real world. They like grading on a curve vs rewarding success and penalizing failure. Public Education is truly an oxymoron statement. They do not care if a child can not make change as they clerk at the Circle K as long as they feel good about themselves. If students are intelligent they embarass the teachers stupidity from the 6th grade on. Public Schools are helping to destroy American exceptionalism very rapidly and the Unions are cheering it on.
You can always tell when some organization has gone sour: it embraces a color; usually red or thereabout. See Venezuela and Thailand. Is it really so simple? SEIU, brought to you by the color purple. I can't quite decide if the members actually KNOW that they're TOOLS, or if they're embracing it. Probably a mix, depending on the "individual."
As long as progressives can rewrite history we are in big trouble anyway.
According to author Diane Ravitchs Book "The Language Police" page 140– "Today, most teachers of history in grades 7-12 have neither a major nor a minor in history; instead they have a degree in social studies education or, some other branch of pedagogy, a social science or completely unrelated field, Even those who do have a major or minor in history are unlikely to have a solid knowledge of American history".–they are dependent on text books for basic information.
Commies have infiltrated education and they suck. Pelosi wants to bail them out this week.
My mother/father/grandparents were all teachers and they would roll in their graves over what has happened to the teachers unions. They were all military veterans and proud Americans who lived the American free market dream.
the union promotes the teacher shortage myth to control access to our kids, so teach your kids to wait til they turn their back before giving them the stink eye
"teachers unions fear"
That's the best news I've heard today
Ask and you shall receive! Many thanks to the administrator and Harry Tuttle..
(just curious is Harry tuttle from an old M.A.S.H. episode?)
Ron Paul has been telling everyone to get rid of the department of education for years and of course no one listens.
Thank you
Well I am glad they deleted his comment above, but there wasn't really anything wrong with that comment.
The problem is the stuff this guy has said and will say in the future if he is allowed to continue to post.
No not from MASH brother
The way I see it is that we are in a pickle on this one folks,……….
Teacher's union this and teacher's union that,………
somehow we have to impress upon the everyday teacher that we are on their side,…….
Spitting on a teacher because this person MUST belong to a union,….I'm afraid,………
all we are doing is spitting into the wind.
In the heat of the hard fought race to mediocrity, teacher unions look to award as many 'participant' awards to all those who bothered to show up, ignoring the winners.
1. End public employee unions (especially teachers)
2. End Tenure, impose meritocracy
3. School vouchers to every family for every child (tax dollars spent where parents choose)
4. Annual competance testing for teachers, fire those that fail to achieve a passing grade
5. Defund National education department, give back to the states to run
6. federal dollars to states that demonstrate results
Its disgusting and we have to hope GOP goes all Reagan on them. By that I mean let them dump a bunch of $ into a losing cause because the Dems have been exposed for what they really are. So not much return on $ and with GOP in power no more hand outs and then bankrupt them and start over. It worked with the other Communists in the Soviet Union.
Lovnthebigsites
I have lots of friends who teach. In grade school, all the teachers who had their own kids there would have their classes changed around, as soon as classes were assigned, to get them the best teachers.
This one is even better…I have a Jewish friend who is a principal. She sent her Jewish kids to a Catholic
high school.
Yep, just stick some packaging on it like; The Patriot Act or a cause like, stop the killing of puppies.
This enormous offensive by the oRegime to get all these various UNION retirement funds fully funded
even though their administrators failed miserably to do the job will merely put one more group in the
RULING CLASS.
While most of us scratch around for crumbs for the next 50 years due to the RULING CLASS's decisions
of the last 50 years, we will feel so much better knowing TEACHERS are a part of THE RULING CLASS.
Thus we will not dare question their treatment of our children and grandchildren. When one is in rags and
barely subsisting, one DOES NOT DARE QUESTION ANY FORM OF AUTHORITY. During and after the
Great Depression teachers had unparalleled authority.
THESE BAILOUTS MUST STOP!
.
Let's hope it puts such a big fear in them that they run over a cliff….
Roger that.10-4, It wasn't his comment… It was his "presence". We are all for free speech and spirited debate, but Talkzalot crossed the line one to many times. once again… /SALUTE ..
In 2003, one Los Angeles union representative said: “If I’m representing them, it’s impossible to get them out. It’s impossible. Unless they commit a lewd act.” Between 1995 and 2005, only 112 Los Angeles tenured teachers faced termination — eleven per year — out of 43,000. And that’s in a school district whose 2003 graduation rate was just 51 percent." Why? Because most are children of illegal aliens!
I've stored a handy translation that explains all of jerkzoffalot's posts:
TEH JEEEEEEUUUUUUUUWWWWWWWZZZZZSSSSSS!!!!!1!!!11!!!
I say to myself almost daily, thank the Lord my parents are not here to see what has and is happening
to the USA. They would be horrified.
.
No kidding…..and how about a list of the labor bosses, school administrators and teachers with kids in private or parochial schools.
A great example… The child's education trumps the parents religion.
A fun fact would be how high the principal was up there in the union leadership. Oh the irony.
Agreed brother, have a cold one on me!
Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Wouldn't be necessary if we had vouchers.
A-B-C-D-E-F-G
All of us should stand together in solidarity
Never mind that our students don't learn
As long as our pay check, we get we have no concern
As long as the union assures or contiued prosperity
Competent teachers should be rewarded and incompetenr ones weeded out. The unions promote mediocrity.
That is correct. Teachers in our institutions of higher learning have dumbed down the standards beyond belief.
You know this is just a way to funnel money to the Union so they can funnel it to the Democrap party. In Nancy's eyes, this is an all out emergency!
Sadly, the budget crisis may be the best thing that could happen to education. As governors follow Chris Christie's lead in cutting teachers' benefits and taking the teachers' union head on, schools will be begin to be held more accountable. Here are a couple ideas that would help the education system wants the ball gets rolling:
1) Get rid of the department of education
2) Give vouchers to poor families so that they can choose what school they want their children to go to
3) Abolish the education departments in schools. It forces future teachers to specialize in "progressive teaching" rather than the subject they will be teaching once they get a job. Professors don't need a teaching degree to teach and neither should middle and high school teachers. This would save teacher's money from school bills while attracting more people — people who actually know what they are teaching about — to become teachers.
4) Fast track programs for students so they can graduate in 3 years.
For the money that is paid for each student in the broken education system we have now, every student could have a private tutor or attend private school. Why are we throwing our hard earned money down a perpetual rat-hole?
It's time for a do-over, capitalist style!
“Race to the Top”. That's the name of Obama's education initiative? Seems to me he's been putting race to the top of nearly everything for the last couple of years.
Agreed!
Lotta passion there, onecornpone.
It's even better than that. Although she leans left heavily, she is in the administration (non union) and has to DEAL with the unions and union leadership. Needless to say she has a different attitude about the unions than she did as a teacher.
Education definitely needs an overhaul. You start unions to protect your workers from thugs and then the unions become the thugs. Not a good system. Competition is a wonderful thing and shows you what you're made of. I do not agree that all the bad education numbers should be blamed solely on teachers. Parental involvement plays a huge part.
Of course the problem is not the teacher, it is the UNION and the requirement that they belong.
Right to work needs to be Federal policy. Public sector unions need to be stopped.
Of course, I'm not sure that Obama would be much help on that…
Finally got rid of The Fonz again?
Good. I am waiting for his next incarnation.
they don't just fear competition…
They will not ALLOW it. The curious out there should look up the NEA's 'Goals 2000' screed from the '90's. It spells out clearly the Progressive plan to indoctrinate the youth, turn them against their parents by replacing them with teachers as 'mentors', and advancing their sexual maturity so as to both drive them away from childhood innocence into the dark chambers of teen sex- and also provide the 'mentors' with some tasty youngsters to 'peruse'.
This is not on the radar of almost all teachers, but it most assuredly is on the minds of the top officials. it is why they are SO insistent on sex education in pre-school. Ultimately it is a very evil and morally corrupt attack on the most innocent among us for their own naked political power- not to mention sexual tastes, as well.
People- parents of school age children- need to be aware of this…
Actually both of you are wrong…sorry. The earth revolves on its axis and therefore we on the earth have only seen what appears to be the sun rising and setting. In all actuality the sun does not rise or set. But that is coming from a teacher and what the hell do we know.
Pretty much my agenda, right down the line.
Taking these steps will kill progressivism. Liberals can go back to being soft-headed morons with wonderful intentions and useless ideas.
……….and kids can start getting a real education.
On the minus side, the Che T-shirt guy will go out of business. Bummer.
The Tea Party needs allot more members before we can hope for any control over downsizing from the GOP. …for every Jim Demint there are two Voinovith's
Yep, Boldness, "Lotta passion", this one hit a nerve. Have childhood memories of a teacher
relative who loved to talk about her "influence" over her students and their families in the
mid-twenties. Mind you she was still telling those stories twenty-five years later, evidently
it was the highlight of her life. She had many redeeming qualities, but humility was not one.
Many teachers of that era were tyrants, IMO. And they had NO UNIONS.
I've known kids coming out of New Jersey and New York public schools that literally can't read, let alone string together a coherent sentence.
I can't wait for that "The Lottery" documentary to come out and expose these power-hungry dirtbags. I also hope that this bailout doesn't go through. For all the cries of "think about the children!" they sure think about their paychecks even more.
i teach so i know about this. let me add to your list.
7. impose the same standard for teachers in public and private schools. now all public teacher have to have masters degrees by their 4-6 years. private schools do not even have to have a bach. degree.
8. impose the same rules for both private schools as public schools or vice versa. now public schools have a staff that DOES NOT TEACH BUT FILLS OUT COMPLIANCE FORMS it is an enormous waste.
9. allow students school choice. allow the parents or the students pick the school not the school pick the kids.which means private schools cannot kick out kids who routinely make education impossible, and send them to public school who have to take them in anyway.
10. impose testing in private schools just like public schools. right now private schools have their own standards, let them have to have the same standards as public schools.
Oh dear, I think he was serious, how only JOOOOOz and Amerikkkan whites want to kill all races. No talk of 'killing cracker babies', talkzalot…or is it liezalot?
…Who's the 'party of hate' again? Can you proglodytes be anything BUT hypocritical and filled with loathing for anyone who doesn't subscribe to your deluded propaganda?
"2) Give vouchers to poor families so that they can choose what school they want their children to go to"
There is a problem with that item, you see it right?
While researching my own question:
Wasn’t the first teachers union founded in NYC by communists in the 1920's?
I found this nifty bit o’ information:
http://education.stateuniversity.com/pages/2130/I...
These Bastards are dug in like Alabama ticks.
Teachers need to teach.
If the student fails to learn, the teachers fail to teach.
If the students fails to learn fire the teacher(s).
And fire the billygoats who say, 'but' 'but.'
Interesting that the attitude preceded the unions. My wife and I had horrible experiences in the education system so we opted out – we are homeschooling – just graduated one with two to go.
We will NOT allow our children to be brainwashed or indoctrinated by ANYONE! The continuation of Freedom demands that we raise children who can make decisions based on LOGIC and facts. They know what truth looks like and can stand up for it.
Taxpayer money, and not just for campaign finance either…get out the vote organization and fake protest too. Unions getting cash pays better than corporations getting welfare–corps don't have the extra two perks. Although with corporations you do buy that future lobbying job or speaking fees but those can be nailed down with tax breaks and regulations.
Thank goodness for the home schooling rage, sadly for our children that option came too
late, and they have suffered many of the issues publicly educated children experience. It's
wonderful that so many have recognized the pitfalls and I salute all of you who have made
the enormous commitment home schooling requires.
.
Unions are more interested in their Member's Union Dues to buy Power! than in anything else.
Today the Unions had a meeting with Obama and pledged Millions upon Millions of dollars to support "The Democrats" for the next 90 Days! Hmm… do ALL of the Union Members want that? I don't think so.
Oh, and Pelosi is getting ready to push CARD CHECK! So no more Privacy or Freedom of Choice for YOU Members of Unions!
Homeschooling is one area that the progressives have not been quite so successful in trampling.
We are on our guard though.
Thanks for reposting – from the thumbs up you see people AGREE!
Not from MASH indeed – and it is shameful you use that character's name. That guy had courage.
While I agree with the negative remarks about teachers'unions, please don't color all teachers with the same brush. Some states, like Texas, do not have official teacher's unions, just teachers' groups which may or may not be somehow affiliated with a union. It is much easier for teachers to be accountable and, for the most part, I think education is at least a bit better in many of the non-union states. In large districts, even the teachers' groups, though, can exert pressure, though not to the extent of the unions in much of the country.
The numbers are this (in DC): 100%
Good article with excellent points…..but "Robber Barons"? Really? That term was coined by the same sort of people/ideas that you are arguing against here and an unfair description of some of the most incredible industrial and business minds in our history. Some, SOME, of that era's characters used coercive monopoly practices but only by jumping in bed with politicians with too much power to abuse the system. Coercive monopolies, after all, are only possible with government cooperation.
PS – PRIVATE SCHOOLS!
LMAO.. idiot, Harry Tuttle on M.A.S.H. was the figment of the character "Hawkeye's" imagination in ONE episode.
Speaking of "shame" have you not been clowned enough? You bring nothing to the table but hate and lies… what possible motivation do have to post here? Be honest! No hyperbole… some of us really want to know.
You sound biased to me. BTW, do you teach the curriculum, "A People’s History of the United States", by Howard Zinn?
This pisses me off………………………It pisses me off even more because I do not have children and yet my tax dollars still go to pay the salaries of "half wit" f**ks like these……………………………
Isn't it ironic that we are being taken over with our OWN Tax Dollars, and Union Dues!
He mocks our Military!
True that many dont listen, but he is right. Actually, the department of education, EPA, IRS, and other government agenties need to be gone. Those along with all public unions and unneeded private ones.
I don't know about Unions destroying education. I'm sure that they don't help. However, being a former teacher in NC for 11 years I can say from my experience that creativity and the ability to be creative has been stripped from teachers. The curriculum and how you will teach the curriculum is dictated to teachers by the local district. The current model is a one shoe fits all philosophy. If the shoe doesn't fit your child teachers have the ability to adapt for your child but only with state approved research based interventions. The point to my rambling is, that it's my opinion, that education is being destroyed by legislation and local administrators that have reduced teachers to nothing more then voices to deliver instruction designed by others. Most of the approved curriculum used in our school system comes boxed with student and teacher material. The teachers materials even include daily lesson plans.
As I said before I taught for 11 years. There are many other variables I could mention that are playing a role in the demise of our public schools and not all of them are internal. I'll just say that a child raised in a home receiving entitlements has a much different outlook on education then one who doesn't, per my experience.
As a North Carolina teacher I can't relate to those of you living in states that have true teacher unions but I can agree that our public schools are in trouble and a lot of teachers know it but have little or no ability to change the system, or should I say systems. A free enterprise approach to education might just be the answer. We already know that a government entitlement approach isn't working.
With the appropriate understanding of grammar and fondness for caps lock. Mugiwara, you've got him exact.
Reminds me of my friend mocking me for having to read Mein Kampf to do a research paper on the Nazis. He summed up the book with "Die (Insert Juden, Communists or bad modern art)".
In our kids' homeschool group, there are a number of parents that are, get this, public school teachers. I asked one why they don't have their own kids in the school they work at and his answer was 'the school I work at is a war zone, I would never put my kids in that school.'
America's public school system is a disaster that needs to be put out it's misery. Give parents 'school stamps' to pick where to send their kids and let the best schools win, just like food stamps work at any grocery store. Or do we need state run grocery stores now?
Two things that should be booted from the educational system are the teachers unions, and professors like Bill Ayers (who should be in jail or at room temperature) who teach future teachers to hate their own country.
Teachers have already destroyed the education system in this country…when they work All year long as does the rest of the country…and quit acting like they are doctors….only then can we get to the business of education which is the last thing in a teachers union agenda.
Huge issue in the UK. For DECADES Labour Party leaders have sent their children to the best private schools, whilst simultaneoulsy speaking about how fanstastic state education is. Naturally, those with some sense have wondered why, if state-run education is so wonderful, do politicians and the military and civil servants send their children to be privately educated.
Now and again you'll find a socialist that sends his children to a state school, that IS true, but they are so rare they draw attention to the situation.
Anyway: we don't believe in child abuse and bullshit excuses, so our children are privately educated. No offense, but you statist-lite types have opted out of your own childrens education, live with it. You made your scum-sucking public schools so you could all live in houses you couldn't afford, taking jobs for your egos, going on vacations to make you feel big, buying cars and appliances to make up for what little you have between your legs…
deal with it. You love your children, but you send them out everday to be mentally and spiritually abused. Yeah, you love your children.
Revoke Ex-Order 10988 ,, Fire all Union Government Workers ,, Teachers included . LetsTake Back Our Country .
Bravo!!!!
If capitalism and freedom of purchase were in the hands of parents, then the money would go to good schools with good teachers. And the LAUSD would be out of business. Sooner the better. Students who got D's in school now run the schools and A-level teachers leave, B-level students struggle and C-level students drop out.
You know what? I actually agree with you kinda sorta. I do think that the teachers need to have demonstrable comepetence in the subjects they teach. Regards your number 8 you only reinforce my objection to the fed intrusion and obfuscation of the educational process and top heavy administration requirements. And your number 9, I agree that if parents are given the ability to spend their childs allocation on which ever school they choose, that school cannot discriminate on who they take, unless of course they have other legitimate reasons to refuse someone.
and lastly, I would love to see that the schools are held to account as represented by test results.
All in all not bad suggestions, but it is all mental masturbation because the unions will not allow any of these ideas to be tried ANYWHERE.
I know some teachers and the ysay they are PROFESSIONALS. Fine but when I counter that I have never heard of a doctor's union, an Engineers union, an Architects union. they have no answer.
I wonder why teachers unions oppose personal accountability? Im thinking its cause you cant be a good teacher and indoctrinate young minds with factless leftist drivel at the same time..
Very good point K962! Professionals would be in a merit pay system.
I hear all the time,"it's not the teachers- it's the unions" if this is the case how do we fix the problem? Union contracts run out, they have to be renegotiated, is that not an opportunity to CANCEL any contract with said union? Sorry teachers, if you belong you can't sing the song-"it's not me it's the unions"!
i was not trying to argue. i am just pointing out problems that a teacher would know that are really not seen by the public. private schools do not have 50 layers of oversight like public schools. i teach. i have a supervisor. he has a supervisor. he has a supervisor. and on and on. all those layers cost money and frankly are not useful to education. every dollar washington sends, they take back in the form of compliance people, .80 it rarely gets to the students. schools generally have building codes that private schools do not have. they have hiring quotas that have to be justified. for instance, all minorities HAVE TO BE REPRESENTED on staff even if they are not qualified. we cannot refuse service to any student even if that kids is a junior charles manson.
i am just saying that 95% of the teachers are not these liberal bomb throwers that you see. a survey done a few years ago showed that most teachers are in fact conservatives. frankly i would like to see private schools done away with because if we had more parents who would riot about all the garbage, it would stop and schools would be better. there is a wall now between parents who care and the parents who do not and frankly we get 99% of the parents who do not.
not biased, informed. just like you know more about you profession than i do.
It is clear that that clown was from a far left blog site.
It may be the members of the teachers Union don't want the challenge to their ranks if school vouchers were allowed for alternative charter schools. But the communists that run the unions don't want the competition to control just WHAT your children are being taught. They can't have poor children NOT receiving the proper indoctrination.
Abolish the FedDepartment of Education. Education control belongs in the State and local level.
The competition should be from allowing vouchers for all students to choose where they go to school. The public schools should be as good as the private.
All children should have the option to go to schools as good as the President's girls.
NEA Recommendation to it members:Here is how they describe Alinsky’s books:
NEA recommends the following Saul Alinsky books to those members of our Association who are involved in grassroots organizing, especially Association Representatives (ARs) — also known as building reps or shop stewards — and leaders at local affiliates.
Saul Alinsky is widely recognized as the father of, and pre-imminent expert in, grassroots organizing, which is why we recommend that ARs and local leaders become familiar with his theories & materials. http://bunkerville.wordpress.com/2010/08/03/natio...
Ron Paul is behind the curve. REAGAN wanted to get rid of the Department of Education.
However the bureaucrats are solidly entrenched and a lot of the funding is going to important Congresscritters districts and states, so it ain't gonna happen.
Between 1961 and 2005 public funding for primary and secondary education increased 247% – this increase was measured in inflation-adjusted dollars. This means we are now providing 2.47 times the economic resources to education that we did in 1961. The problem isn't money, the problem is accountability and accountability can only be measured in the context of competition. Public education is a failure. We need a system that provides open competition for students, results, salaries and attach a profit motive to it that ends education discrimination and there is only one plan that does this and it is called the "Education Plus" program that is part of The Fix – Capitalism Version 2.0 (Lovellian economics). The best part about the Lovellian economics plan is that it provides universal education access and support without a single dime of taxpayer money and gets the government out of the classroom and replaces liberal brainwashing with peer-to-peer ratings based upon actual outcomes: how much money graduates make, their grades, the percentage that go to college, graduation, etc. and this is the only way education will be saved. A complete public finance plan for the Education Plus program is available at: http://www.thefixbookstore.com/Universal_Educatio...
Now you know what you need to know and wouldn't that be a first for our education system?
