Cowardly Congress Hides Pork Spending Behind the Troops
by Kyle OlsonThe original $23 billion in public education stimulus spending has been whittled down to $10 billion and cynically stuffed in a bill to continue funding the war effort in Afghanistan. While Democrats can hardly be accused of coming up with the idea, it’s a maneuver that we can ill afford right now.

If the Democrats had the courage to continue racking up debt to give handouts to their political supporters, they’d promote the bill on its own. But they don’t, so it’s stuck in a bill that has nothing to do with education and everything to do with a war effort President Obama once said “We need to win.”
Perhaps he should remind his fellow Democrats of that and not allow them to hold the war in Afghanistan hostage by demanding pork barrel spending to satisfy campaign financiers.
Worse yet, the president and his administration are allowing members of their own party to strip funding away from one of Obama’s signature initiatives, Race to the Top – a $4 billion fund aimed at incentivizing reforms such as performance pay and charter schools.
So Democrats such as Rep. Dave Obey want to take funds away from reform and give them to maintaining a failing status quo. Is that where the Democratic Party really stands on sensible and much-needed reform? Apparently when the going gets tough, they revert back to instinct: whatever Big Labor wants, Big Labor gets. Don Loos exposed a communication on BigGovernment.com showing the firefighters union president explaining it was Big Labor’s idea to attach public works spending to the war bill.
The economic climate has actually fast-forwarded reform. Pension funds in Illinois and New York are on the brink of collapse. Because of huge rate increases, school districts in Michigan are on the verge of paying $20,000 per employee for health insurance – from an entity that is controlled by and kicks back millions of dollars each year to the teachers’ union.
We don’t have funding problems in our public schools, we have spending problems. The teachers unions want any sort of bailout to ease the need to change the way schools are spending their our money. Like any ailing company, the time to fix the problems and correct the inefficiencies is when times are tough. That time is now. So instead to demanding more money and limping along until the next bailout, we should demand our public schools fix their problems. But that will require staring the aggressive teachers unions down.
At this point, our public schools are little more than a public works program. That’s why we’re seeing the call for this stimulus spending, or “bailout,” as AFT president Randi Weingarten said.
We just recently celebrated Independence Day, a time we remember and toast our freedom and Founders. Americans are increasingly becoming slaves to the state and the demands by public employees for higher taxes to fund their pay and perks is a perfect example. Will we allow that to continue or will we demand they no longer hide their interests behind the children?
Who can forget this outrageous example of union greed? At a tax-eaters rally in Springfield, Illinois, one union member wanted to know “where is the money?” and demanded taxpayers “give up the bucks!” This is what we’ve come to expect, not only from the public education system but “public servants” in general.
Teachers unions hide their demands behind children, and troops serving in harm’s way, because they know the public appetite is not there to continue things they way they currently are. When will our elected leaders get that message? They ought to have the courage to allow massive spending bills to be judged on their own merit and let the votes be counted. If that were to happen, American would be in much better shape financially.

NOW is the time to act………

We have got to get rid of the arrogant thieves. How in the heck can they go to sleep at night knowing what they are doing to our country. They will answer to this madness soon but not soon enough.
No way I would vote yes and no way the dims don't fund the troops….Why don't the pukes just deem the troops funded.
It never stops, they're spending millions on signs which are nothing but propaganda and create not one job. Meanwhile all those "shovel ready projects" are shutting down because the "stimulus funds" are gone.
http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/plenty-of-schock-ver...
Why don't they just deem the war as won and deem that all the troops have come home?
Change you can believe in. Poppy cock. I do not believe in his change, and looking around this country I would say that is why he is suffering in public opinion, besides all of the lies.
God Bless America
Ok, so we see another problem. What is the solution? Any ideas? Here's mine:
Introduce an open application initiative for any American to apply for public employment positions at private market pay scales, devoid of union representation. Use merit based criteria for hiring new, non-union workers to replace underachieving union workers. Let union employees compete with non-union employees for every position in the public square, and let the best employees win.
Vouchers is the answer. Get private companies to do a better job of educating our kids at a lower price. This creates jobs, drives down costs and reduces waste (and more importantly, union rolls).
It's more and more evident that we need to help our troops by 'taking the hill'. Capitol Hill.
From what I've read, the "shovel ready jobs" only accounted for 4% of "stimulus." Just enough for democrat photo ops to give the illusion of real work being done. The entire democrat party has become a cancerous lesion on the body politic. It's time to remove the cancer.
Typical, just typical!!!!
I am so sick of it now!!!! Come on Nov 2nd!!!!
I wish this was a Democrat problem, but unfortunately both parties are equally guilty. A pox on both parties. Clean them out in November before they suck us dry.
I'm repeating myself again but, when bills are voted on in congress, no unrelated amendments should be attached. All this practice does for both sides is to give political cover and no one has to take a stand on particular issues.
Please don't stop repeating yourself. Common sense, intelligent thoughts need to be repeated everywhere until we can implement them in the next Congress and beyond.
I agree completely. And thanks for pointing out the "solutions." We need that now more than ever.
A form of trickery and abuse that we now need to stop.
That's Right! What he said!
Seriously Finn, you are right on.
I believe that we are either on the cusp of a rebirth of Liberty, or unwitting participants in the demise of American Liberty at the hands of socialists and communists. It's up to us.
What we do now will echo in eternity
Everyone of the current inhabitants of the pigsty known as Congress……….
needs to go to the "slaughterhouse" this November.
Also remove the ability for the Unions to provide political contributions. That can apply to businesses as well. Politicians will not stick their necks out for the Unions unless they have something to gain. Remove the gain. The corruption will die.
Democrats only oppose national defense spending if its used for national defense.
Make those two changes and hope Soros goes on to greener pastures and the entire Denocrat machine fizzles as you just unplugged its only power source.
No surprises here. Those who sponser these bills must be voted out. They just don't get it.
One more lie in a long series of lies. Taxpayers! Had enough yet? Tell them at the polls in November!
I fail to see a long list of republicans coming out against this?
Are they not working for us anymore?
The only way for them to get it right is this November, mark your calendar so you don't forget and cast that ballot. Every time an election rolls around and my once fired up friends, who were in such a frenzy a month before tell me "Oh, I have too much to do today." "It's not going to make a difference." and then when it goes back to status quot (a month after the old guys are still in office) they get all fired up again! Eff that! Get out there and vote fools. All of the Obama Tools are gonna be there we need our voice to be present at the ballot box, not at the keyboard laying out complaints online!
No riders, no amendments, no nothing on defense spending! Make it a law , a rule and call it what you want. DO NOT ALLOW it ! Where are the Republicans hiding?
need I remind you??? POLITICIANS ARE SCUM….
you could white panther 'em and force them into the voting booth…or is that anti-racist…oh hell who knows. I'll contribute to your defence fund if need be…
No reminder needed, bn,
We knew this would happen. We may be slow to wake up and late to the party, but we're not stupid. Of course congress, all of congress, will just find another way to do what they want when one door is closed to them. However, there ARE PORK WATCHDOG groups out there….wish we could bring a link to them here, so we'd know which Rs and Ds caved or worse, colluded to hide their spending while touting signing the NO PORK agreement.
Or at least a LIST of them so we know who LIED TO OUR FACES. That would be good to know going into Nov.
bwahahahaha….
gasp
bwahahahahaha….
gasp
anti-racist, that's frigging awesome!
working for…….us……oh! you need to go take your medicine, work for us???? that's hillarryus!!!!!! sorry that ain't in their best interests……working for us hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha….
I thought only crooked republicans made money off of war!
Then they multiply and spread!….
The Founders endured so much to birth this country. They would spin in their graves if they could see the stunts the cowards in office now are pulling to keep themselves in power, RULING over the American People. http://www.thefedupamerican.com
The democrats want our education system to fail so later they can influence the stupid voters to vote for the nanny state.

It needs to made law that the only spending allowed in any bill before Congress can only be directly related to the subject of the bill. That would get rid of the majority of the wasteful pork spending. If it is not important enough to presented in an open way before our Congressmen and the one who desires the pork feels the need to bury or hide in unrelated legislation, then we don't need to be funding it. Fiscal responsibility is the cry for November elections!
