‘Emergency Education Jobs Bill’ is Really a Union Dues Bailout Bill
by Kyle OlsonThe National Education Association, the nation’s largest teachers union, and its counterpart, the American Federation of Teachers, are ramping up attention on Senate Bill 3206, introduced by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), which would create a $23 billion “education jobs fund” to hire or retain “150,000 or more” school employees for the next school year. The NEA is engaged in a “massive, 24/7 lobbying campaign” to pass Harkin’s bill, according to its president Dennis Van Roekel.
That’s $153,333 spent per job just to “retain” them. The most recent data from the American Federation of Teachers concluded the average teacher salary is $51,009. Where is the other $100,000 per job going?
Nevertheless, in a recent Senate committee hearing, Harkin cited the “emergency” for creating the fund. Note he didn’t say teachers, he said “education jobs.” That’s because in many states, like Michigan, teachers unions are losing members that are custodians or food service workers.
Just for the record, billions of dollars have already been spent on “retaining” school jobs. The NEA claims 325,000 public school jobs were “saved” under the stimulus bill.
The NEA released a YouTube video with a title which pretty much sums up the union’s entire existence: “The issue is JOBS.”
Of course: the issue is not accountability or test scores or huge amounts of fiscal waste. It’s simply jobs and therefore union dues.
What would Sen. Harkin’s bill mean for the NEA and AFT in terms of revenue? Let’s do the math. The NEA has about three-quarters of unionized school employees within its fold. Its 2010 dues are $162 per full-time member, according to the Indiana State Teachers Association, an NEA affiliate. AFT’s annual dues are $184.20, according to union financial documents found at AFTexposed.com.
Using the membership ratio breakdown, it is estimated an “education jobs” bill would result in a savings of $18.2 million for the NEA and $6.9 million for the AFT.
Surely this never dawned on the two unions when they decided to push for this bill.
There is a direct correlation between the loss of public school jobs – whether warranted due to declining enrollment or because of a money shortage – and the teachers unions’ income. If the NEA and AFT can pass an “education jobs” bill, it will also equate to a huge windfall for Big Labor.
Just what the unions put this Congress in to do, right?

Don't you know that you have to pay all those teachers that aren't allowed in the classroom and can't be fired? That takes real money. Money for nothing.
Who writes this sh*t??? Who in DC has the guts to admit they author these bills? I'm still waiting to hear who was behind the HC bill and most recent financial reform bill. Now before anyone jumps in with a link saying 'here ya go' keep in mind those clowns didn't write the stimulus bill last year; it came from Apollo Alliance. And no I didn't take GB' s word for it for you bashers I went to their site and looked it up for myself.
Efing unions, congress and the admin are a bad mix. You idget politicians and spec int group leaders (BTW where is Andy Stern????) better wake up and see what all that commingling will result in and watch the news out of Greece. Those whom you are working to benefit will come for you when the whole thing backfires…. just like Greece!
Remember folks this is all a game to them, a tennis match really and "we the people" are the ball! STOP playing their game and start playing your game through http://www.savingtherepublic.com

Its just staggering how much and how fast the government can piss away money.
What could I do in my classroom with $150K? I'll live a decent life on that salary and feed all the kids one substantial meal per day (or two) and provide the best textbooks and some cool technology. I'd even teach them what they need to know and how to learn more, and how to think for themselves once they reach the real world…because $150K for a classroom and a classroom teacher is definitely not the real world.
Guess that money goes to the important jobs.
That's all we need. More damn snouts in the government trough.

Seems to me that the less public school teacher jobs we have, the smarter the populace. Talk about an unproductive use of money. Let's spend money on people who year after year give us the same old garbage, undeucated kids who go on to vote for socialists like Obambi.
<< Who in DC has the guts to admit they author these bills? I'm still waiting to hear who was behind the HC bill and most recent financial reform bill. >>
Will all the lobbyists responsible for larding up both bills please step forward? I'll wait … and wait … and wait …
(Generally, the people who write the actual bills are not the same people who have to get elected.)
I've got an idea. How about if, instead of setting aside partisan politics, instead we set aside all unions. Disband them all and pay people what they're worth or what the free market dictates. Everybody keeps their jobs but they no longer have any union benefits. Instead they get the benefits the company they're working for pays them. That's how I've spent my entire working life and it worked out just fine until recently, when I was laid off, and with all the job killing legislation coming from this administration and their Union thugs, I'll be lucky if I ever find another job again as long as I live. But hey, that shouldn't be much longer. I'm 61 now so I'm sure the great new health care bill will see to it that if I become ill, I'll be too old to spend money on to save, so…………..
Someone is waking up.
The entire Obamacare package was simply a Ba-al-out for SEIU and some other unions. It has nothing to do with health or care. It's just a way for our Emir to get "walking around" money for his stash and to pay Andy Stern back for throwing the selection to the Emir.

Duh! Every dollar these scumbags spend has some kind of corrupt union fingerprint. Come on November!

I am SO GLAD I homeschool my children…
The problem is, you are still paying for it. Parents who home school their kids should get the money back in a tax refund.
If I hear Nancy Palosi say one more thing is "for the kids", I swear, I'm gonna grab a kid and carry them INTO a burning building! Arggggghhhhhhhhh!
If you think the school system has anything to do with education from the lefts viewpoint, you are mistaken. For the left it is all about gaining more union power and controlling what is and isn't taught in schools. This is why the voucher program will be fought at all cost by the left, that is until they out a way to get control of that program.
Who is worse, the NEA or SEIU? (I guess that’s like asking if Stalin was worse than Hitler)
This is just getting insane. Another union grab.
Beware– there is also move afoot (again) to grab private IRAs and 401(K)s, to cover for the union pension shortfalls. That's right, the government wants to take your private pension plan, to co-mingle it with, and to make up for the overly generous union pension shortfalls.

I read that too. Wonder if they'll put it in the bipartisan fiscal commission. The minute they make a move, people with start withdrawing their money and the market will have violent contractions.
They're definitely thinking about it though, because we can smell it.

A voucher bill, be it earmarked for a small group of kids,………………
may become a reality here in Illinois of all places,……….
there just may be a future for this country.
That would be SWEET, but my kids are more important than the money, so I'll let that be for now.
I don't want the government coming after mebecause they don't want to give back my money…

If you think the " extra " $100,000 per teacher is going to go to the student, the pension plan, paying off union debt, or upgrading schools, you have been fooled because union leaders don't care about any of these things. The money will simply go back into the machine to expand union influence and maybe a raise or two for the union bosses.
GREECE
First they fund the Union Officials Benefits and Rertirement plans and then get ready to buy the next election. Game over money all gone. RINSE & REPEAT

The commentary misses the point. State budgets have been so poorly managed that U.S. school districts expect to have to cut nearly 300,000 jobs during the next school year — on top of what they've cut the last two years. You can complain about the unions all you want, but the point of the education bill is to keep teachers in the classroom so your children and the children who will grow up to become young adults in your lifetimes will be educated. The bill, which I suggest you read, has nothing to do with unions. It has everything to do with education.
We Will Revoke Ex-Order #10988 .
The end result: perpetuation of the teachers unions and the progressives, substandard education and propagandizing of future generations.
That is fine with me. And they are scary smart too.

As a classroom teacher, I have become inured to the open bashing my trade receives. However, you all realize that because the state's budgets are based on sales taxes and property taxes, they states are actually laying off thousands of teachers. You all know that right? Class sizes that were 20:1 just a year ago are likely to be closer to 35:1 next year. This bill does actually try to address this problem and keep teachers in the classroom. Now if you hate unions, that is one thing, but do you really want a huge percentage of hard working teachers out on the street? Do you really want public schools that heavily impacted? Obviously, we need some long term fiscal fixes in regards to state budgets, but you don't really want to dump ten of thousands of teachers into the rolls of the unemployed just as the economy is starting to turn around? Do you?

What, exactly, do you want from teachers? I'll tell you what teachers want: A generation of parents that didn't raise their children by leaving them in front of the television, that reads to their children, that gets involved at the schools their children attends. Their is no study that shows that teachers are failing anything. You are failing the teachers by expecting us to raise your children for us, and when that doesn't turn out well, you blame us. Seriously, America, stop blaming us for your bad parenting skills. Study after study shows that the most beneficial thing your child can have is an experienced teacher. The worst thing is having your kids sit if front of the TV for hours everyday. Get off the couch and take your kids outside and the world, and education, will be much better for it.
The issue is NOT jobs! The issue is corrupt marxist unions and their complete diregard for what their employers, the taxpayer want from them. Just like the rest of the Marxist (aka Democrat) Party in America.
let them strike, then FIRE EVERY ONE OF THEM!

Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Every bill the left writes seems to give money to one group or another that inevitable will end up giving that money to the campaign of a democrat. The money may change hands more than a few times and thus the need for the bloated dollar figures but the result is the same.
The problem with that is ultimately greed. The stock holders are greedy, the companies are greedy, the government is greedy, the unions are (now) greedy and caught in the middle is the employee who want's the best for themselves and their loved ones. To some degree even they can become greedy but without unions the only leverage they have is their ability to make the greedy company more money. Once upon a time companies offered pensions but somewhere down the line, perhaps thanks to the unions, the pensions began to cut into the companies bottom line and so they no longer offered pensions to new employees and eventually began forcing early retirements. It's all an ugly affair but at the heart of it is the self interest of the respective individuals. The companies, unions and even our government are merely a reflection of the people running them. If the company seems greedy it's because some person or groups of people got too greedy for their own good. It's as simple as that.
This is why the democrats came unglued when the court overturned the campaign finance "reform" bill. Companies will be able to counter those union funds with funds of their own. It's sad that money holds this much influence over an election but at least the playing field has been leveled. The Unions do not hold the sway they did during the last mid terms. One thing is almost certain. As a matter of self preservation Obama will inevitably seek to have those campaign finance restrictions re-imposed. What we must do is remove the democrat majority so they cannot seize that advantage again.
This wouldn't be an issue if the government would/could stop spending more money than it is taking in. Equally important is the wasteful and unnecessary spending. Instead of picketing for higher wages every other year the teachers unions could join the rest of the nation in taking a stand against bloated government. Perhaps then we could put renewed focus on teaching our kids self sufficiency and accountability rather than how to manipulate and blackmail their parents.
Agreed. Sadly with so many broken homes it's hard to find parents that have the energy or even mental stamina to engage their children in a meaningful way every day. What's more is how the PC crowd has made it so difficult for parents to discipline their children. Just yesterday I read an article where a grandmother was jailed for slapping her verbally abusive granddaughter. Children are allowed, and therefor encouraged, to rebel against their parents and often times have been encouraged to turn parents in who get physical. The government itself is undermining the family unit by tying parents hands behind their backs. Just as with the economy if the government would simply stay out of it we would be far better off.
So how much money has the NEA donated to democrat candidates campaigns over the years?

Are you kidding!!…..There are large percentages of kids graduating high school that can't even read. You think saving the teachers who are responsible is going to help the situation. As a taxpayer, one of those that pays tens of thousand every year, while others pay nothing, I vote to trim the schools staffs back, way back. Make them run like every other business, lean but competitive, or go out of business. School vouchers don't cost taxpayers and the rewards would be the educated children you are so worried about.
