<i>"I think we both agree that the government should provide its citizens security, and what better way than with universal health care? "</i>

What better way than with universal housing, food, clothing, energy, health care, college education, and entertainment?

Health care is not a natural monopoly like police & fire services, city streets, water & sewer, etc..

We can indeed switch health care providers at the drop of a hat, while we pretty much can't do that with say our water company.

With competitive insurance, medical providers negotiate with insurance companies. There are two hospitals near me - one invests a LOT of money - and gets paid more by insurance companies because their outcomes are generally better. The other hospital makes very little investment - and they get less from hospitals. Their return rate and follow-up requirements are higher.

Under a single-payer system, all medical providers are paid the same. There is absolutely no incentive to do a better job. In fact, single-payer provides incentives to do worse - because the patients have to come back more frequently or spend more time in the hospital.

I did reply to your comment, it started with 'There are limits to free enterprise' and then I went on to explain in detail, what services are, and what services should be public. I detailed the similarities, and the pointed out the differences, I went to great lengths to give you reasons why (military industrial complex) the US is having a hard time finding ways to pay for universal health care, even though it is the single most important issue concerning the security of its citizens.

I am a transplant, before I moved here I was like you, I believed the BS from the corporate media, it took living here, for me to finally open my eyes. I really believe if you ever get a single payer universal health care system in the US you too will change your mind!!!

I notice that you did not reply directly to my post.

If socialized health care is good, why don't we do that for ALL necessities, including homes, clothing, groceries, energy, etc.?

I'll answer your questions after you answer mine.

Canada and the US are mixed economies, and share many of the same economic principals,

There are limits to free enterprise, however. Americans and Canadians have always believed that some services are better performed by public rather than private enterprise. For instance, in the both counties, government is primarily responsible for the administration of justice, education (although there are many private schools and training centers), the road system, social statistical reporting, and national defense. In addition, government often is asked to intervene in the economy to correct situations in which the price system does not work. It regulates "natural monopolies," for example, and it uses antitrust laws to control or break up other business combinations that become so powerful that they can surmount market forces. Government also addresses issues beyond the reach of market forces. It provides welfare and unemployment benefits to people who cannot support themselves, either because they encounter problems in their personal lives or lose their jobs as a result of economic upheaval; it pays much of the cost of medical care for the aged and those who live in poverty; it regulates private industry to limit air and water pollution; it provides low-cost loans to people who suffer losses as a result of natural disasters; and in the US it has played the leading role in the exploration of space, which is too expensive for any private enterprise to handle.

Americans believe they pay lower taxes than Canadians do. However, the top Canadian federal income tax rate is 29%. The Canadian corporate tax is lower than the American corporate tax. I have not seen any recent studies comparing American and Canadian tax rates for all combined taxes from all levels of government, but my guess is in all the median tax rate of Canada is probably less than the United States, the reason for this has to do with the need, or perceived need, for the US to protect all of its corporate interest over seas with a VERY over bloated military budget!!! If you want to talk about Socialism you should look in your own back yard, it is call the MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX!!!!

Costs of healthcare and the pressure for employers to pay for them has a serious negative impact on the creation of new businesses in the US.
