Fact Check: Politician Massa Said He’d Vote for Single Payer
by Kyle OlsonThe controversy surrounding the accusations and resignation of Rep. Eric Massa (D-NY) is a bit bizarre. When he lashed out at the administration, and particularly chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, it was viewed as a peek beneath the veil of Washington inside baseball.

It’s a veil few have the stomach to look beneath. Regardless, Massa’s comments were seized upon as proof of what has been said all along about the administrations tactics to do anything necessary to pass ObamaCare.
Is Massa telling the truth? I don’t know. It seems plausible. It certainly seems to fit the matrix of what the administration has done in the past to twist arms and pressure members of Congress to pass its bill.
But I do know Massa took heat last summer when his meeting with a group of liberal bloggers was recorded and put on YouTube.
Massa: So what happens at my town hall meetings, frankly, is important, because I’m in one of the most right-wing, Republican districts in the country. And I’m not asking you guys to go back to wherever and send people to me, this is a generic statement about ‘what can I do?’ Well, that’s one thing we can do.
Blogger: So if we got your meetings to 60/40 and there was single payer in a bill, you’d vote for it?
Massa: Oh absolutely, I’d vote for single payer.
Blogger: If it was 60/40 sentiment in the room…
Massa: Listen, I tell every audience I’m in favor of single payer…
Blogger: So it there was still 80/20 in the room…
Massa: If there was a single payer bill?
Blogger: If there was a single payer bill…
Massa: I will vote for the single payer bill.
Now, I’m no prosecutor, but this exchange certainly does not seem to jive with what Massa has said in recent days. Just Monday, he said:
The entire nation has said let’s re-write the health care bill, let’s find what we can agree upon. No, no, no, no. We’re going to ram this down the throats of the American people and anyone who stands in the way of doing that is going to be smeared, and they are going to be kicked out of Congress.
But in that same exchange with the bloggers, Massa also said:
I will vote adamantly against the interest of my district if I actually think what I am doing is going to help them. … I will vote against their opinion if I actually believe it will help them.
So, acting as an amateur prosecutor, I ask Rep. Massa, were you telling the truth then or are you telling the truth now? I’d like to believe you – I want to believe you – and your accusations against the Obama administration but something just doesn’t smell right.

Personally I think that the whole lot of them are delusional narcissists and pathological liars!
If you are looking for truth from a politician (now or later) you might also be looking for the Lucky Charms guy too.
I agree it seems really weird. The only thing I can think of is that Massa was one of the ones who would vote "no" if there was no public option which isn't in the current bill. If they're really that desparate to pass something, then shedding a "no" vote is shedding a "no" vote. Would they really care why the vote was "no"?
I sure would like to believe Massa, but hold back. Something doesn't ring true. I concur with the author, when he asks "were you telling the truth then, or are you telling the truth now?" It is humorous political drama, one way or the other.
The part of me that holds back in reserve, is the part of my brain that says he is just another lying, self serving, self dealing Democrat, who has had his world crumble, as the light of day has shone in. No different than Elliott Spitzer or John-boy Edwards………
You'd probably have better luck finding the leprechaun than getting the truth from a politician
This whole episode has been really bizarre. I think he is just trying to distract.

I was for it…before I was against it…until I was for it again…until "they" were against me and then I was against "them" and against it again.
Conservatives and/or republicans should just let him stand as another example of a slimy democrat progressive two-tongued opportunist lest they get slime on themselves. Stay on the sidelines and watch the circular mudfight.
This all sounds like Chicago politics to me, on both sides.
It really isn't the issue of his politics…that's well known. He's for single payer, (public option). The real fun in all of this is that he's acting like a jilted mistress and is willing to go to the wife with the goods. It's always fun to watch these Commies eat their own. Look at it this way….he's one less Progressive that has a chance to vote for this Government take over.
i'll never trust him as far as i can throw Peloser but, gotta admit this is great entertainment.
He's obviously a typical elitist, thinking he knows whats better for people than they themselves know. But, having said that, even an elitist can change their minds, or have a change of heart. I hope that he came to the realization that this healthcare bill is just downright evil and is not merely using it to deflect from the alleged misconduct that is at the heart of this whole boondoggle.
The folks in his district should have known better than to send a "conservative" Democrat to Washington where he would be subject to all kinds of armtwisting and pressure from Pelosi et al.
I think they all need to take a good hard look at who they work for, it's not the health care system, which by the way is still the best in the world, it's not Obama who is really just another lying politician who can't keep all of the lies in a row.
Not to mention the republicans, who do much the same thing, but just in a more devious way, but in the end it still amounts to the same thing, they all lie, and none of them care about the country, or the people.
"No different than Elliott Spitzer or John-boy Edwards………"
Except that in this case the "self serving, self dealing democrat" is lashing out at the self serving, self dealing administration and congress. If any of these cretins decide they want to turn and devour each other, I am all for it. No matter what their motive is.
Massa has probably already seen his 15 seconds of fame. I hope his appearance on Beck today either brings some facts to light or, if not, puts him in his rightful place. I think the guy is a kook, but am willing for him to disprove this or remove all doubt.
Truth is stranger than fiction, and the naked story about Rahm seems too strange to just make up on the spot.
I don't want him in Congress anymore than Barry and Rahm, and I'm sure his "ramming the bill down the throats of the American people" thing is expedient, but the peek behind the curtain reveals the chaos and fracturing of the dems under the guidance of the One.
The more that comes to light concerning this whole health care mess the better for US.
Ok, Rush just called it – Massa objected to the bill because it wasn't socialist enough ie. single payer
Beck should be very interesting today – I'm so freakin sick of this entire circus and all the midgets running the show
ha, just posted something rather benign and it was deleted? please, what is the problem now?
hmm, I'll try again – simply stated that Rush just called this dude Massa out – his no vote was simply because it didn't have the single payer option – not nearly as exciting to think he actually did it to 'save' the nation –
Beck should be interesting today, I for one am tired of the whole circus and watching the midgets run the show ~
Agreed JohnK, makes for good entertainment
I don't know…….If he wanted this to go away, all he had to do is resign and then shut up. It all would have gone away. But instead he's got everyone focused on him like a laser.
It could be he's thinking about a book deal down the road or some other self serving delusion, but trying to "distract" people with his reaction would only increase attention to his problems.
Swim the sharks……….
The words "cannibalistic annhilation" come to mind; as well as Hannibal Lechtre.
Either way, Rep. Massa has lied, either to his left-wing (base?) in the metting, or to the American people has a whole in his recent statments. Once someone is caught in a lie, you can never trust ANYTHING they say thereafter.
JohnK, you're right on in my opinion…I don't really care if he's telling
the truth or not…It's one bunch of liars, against one liar, and if that
doesn't leave a doubt in some peoples minds, I don't know what
would…Everyone knows how desperate Obumble is to pass the
healthcrap bill, and that makes Massa's story plausible……
hmmm…………interesting. Massa: anything to save his own butt and fry Obama and take him with him? Leaping off the ledge with his flag flying and dragging the D party with him? Whom was he was lying to and what was he lying about? CYA and DC political theater..Beck should be awesome today.
I can understand where you're coming from on this…. but if what this guy is saying is true, it needs to be the number one story in all the papers, on all the web sites and blogs, and on the tv. Massive corruption in our government needs to have the light brought upon it, and if we leave it up the the D's to eat themselves, their buddies in the media will bury it.
It seems that the most important question is this: If this guy is telling the truth, does it matter? Once we answer that question, we can proceed from there.
You've got it exactly right, Randy.
Pass the popcorn.
What I am finding rather interesting about the reaction to Massa's character is this totally becomes the MAIN RING … as if because he is not St. Massa (and actually I don't live in up state NY – don't know the man, likely never to meet him – so I really don't care) anything else he says is to be dismissed – wouldn't that be to then also ignore all the other instances of strong arm tactics, threats (veiled or otherwise), back room deals, bribes, and windfalls that come the way of obedient supporters of a particular agenda?? Shouldn't THIS be the focus???
If we readily and out of hand dismiss what he is saying, then using this same standard of judgement, I would think that we'd find it necessary to totally dismiss any and all testimony and information supplied by mob informants and turncoats.
Oh no Skeeter, I don't mean ignore the story, I just mean keep him on the other side of the microphone.
When a guy like this holds out his hand to shake, you better look to see what is in (or on) his other hand.
Nothing wrong with interviewing him, but unless he has some hard evidence to back up his claims, doing a full hour with him such as Beck plans for tonight can backfire big-time. I hope Glenn has the goods.
I see him as little different from Blagoyoyo . . . govich . . . ahh, hell! Blago! and Peterson: Just as utterly corrupt as all the rest. But now that the flame-thrower's aimed in HIS direction, well, now he's willing to spill the beans (or eat them, as the case may be–this may just be all a lot of hot, stinky gas . . . )
Idiot.
Whether he's telling the truth or not, I find this whole thing interesting. Massa taking a shower and then Emmanuel going in there butt naked pointing fingers at his chest, threatening him. It's actually fun to read and watch.
Oh, I'm sorry for the mix up. I agree with your assessment…. hopefully it doesn't backfire. It would be nice to finally bust open and clean out the infested den of corruption in Washington.
Just pass them the salt-n-pepper.
Through dishonesty, the Massa has become the slave.
WH countdown – 1 hour. Popcorn, anyone?
Speaking of government-run healthcare, in the news today is a story from the UK.
A woman had been in and out of the government health care hospital for 9 months, with varying diagnoses.
She finally found out she was pregnant…3 hours before she delivered her first baby.
My experience is believe about half of what you hear. So im sure some of the things he is claiming did in fact happen but unsure of exactly what half.
Nope, not gonna trust Mr. Massa. However, this story of our fish-sending, tutu-wearing friend, the Rahmster, scurrying naked through some showers on capitol hill is worth attention. It could be too weird not to be true but on the other, Mr. Massa has a history of homosexual tendencies while in the military so this story could be pure fantasy, literally. Unfortunately, It could be too compromising to send in a citizen journalist to scoop this story.
But my biggest question is… why haven't we heard about these funky community showers on Capitol Hill before now?
I don't know Mr. Olson, this is pretty shocking stuff here, We have a politician who said one thing, and then says the opposite thing completely…
Odd…
Can you believe that? I've heard of that kind of thing happening in Texas but not in the UK. What's this world coming to?

Without speaking personally with Massa, none of us can really say for sure. All we can do is watch his actions. He seemed very passionate when speaking about the corruption weighing us down. Perhaps he's had time to reflect on what's right and what's wrong? Just throwing it out there.
Watch his actions going forward.
I DVR Glenn Beck, and just watched his interview with this piece of dirt massa. massa wasted the whole hour; how did people vote for this zero? I am sorry, Zero is actually too good, he probably affected his office in a very negative way. Now he's probably in a bar having a drink with his friend rahm, another negative entity of catastrophic dimensions. I would guess massa resigned because the wh threatened to leak some of the ugly crap massa did while in congress. Not only he resigned without giving a good reason, but he was on his best behavior during the interview with Beck. Beck apologized for a wasted hour.
Well, I'm just not sure. Normally, when that sort of thing happens, the woman is very large to begin with. Don't know about this one. Since this particular woman was having tests to determine what was wrong, who knows if they affected the baby adversely.

On the last Massa post on this site, I tried to warn you, but I was ridiculed. Well, it is nice to have the last laugh. The guy is just plain scum. Unfortunately, both parties have elected jerks like him. Does the name Larry Craig ring a bell. Anyway, the faster we can move on, the better off this country will be.

Just saw in today's news that a KY woman gave birth by herself, without knowing she had been pregnant, drove to school to pick up her kid, drove over to her mom's house to show off the baby, and then drove herself to the hospital for a 3-day stay. I can't help myself. I just wonder who paid for the hospital?
