Teachers Unions Spends Dues on Left-Wing Causes AND Ally of Robert Mugabe

A recent study of contributions made by the nation’s two largest teachers unions reveals that both shelled out millions in 2008-09, with a good chunk going to radical and scandal-ridden organizations.
The study, posted online by the Education Intelligence Agency, is further proof that the National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers are out of step with their members, which union officials claim are evenly split between Democrat, Republican and Independent parties.
This is what the EIA found:
The AFT gave $46,894 to the scandal-plagued Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). That organization’s members gave tax evasion advice to pimps and prostitutes, encouraged struggling homeowners to walk away from their mortgages, and championed radical causes like softer immigration regulations and a government takeover of health care.
The AFT’s interest in government-run healthcare is also apparent in its $407,208 donation to the Economic Policy Institute, a union-funded progressive think tank that advocates for the expansion of unionized government jobs, and generally promotes organized labor’s interests.
The AFT also sent $125,000 to Health Care for America Now! HCAN, which is led by SEIU and ACORN, promotes a government takeover of health care.
The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network received $10,000 of AFT dues money to fight for gay rights. GLSEN’s leaders have a long-documented history of promoting sex-related issues to elementary-aged kids.
The AFT made smaller donations to groups that generally promote causes like the redistribution of American wealth. Those included $15,000 to the Apollo Alliance, and $25,000 to Jessie Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition.
In total, the AFT spent $5.3 million in dues income promoting radical left-wing advocacy groups and charities. Most of the money went to seemingly innocuous organizations with radical policies.
The NEA, which doled out $26 million in dues dollars, also sent the bulk of its money to the far left.
The anti-American, human rights fanatics at Amnesty International banked $7,500 from the NEA. The Economic Policy Institute got a quarter-million in NEA membership money. GLSEN received $157,500, and HCAN got $450,000 from the NEA.
MediaMatters, which attacks and distorts reports from conservative organizations, earned a $100,000 NEA check.
The NEA also gave a $10,000 donation to Al Sharpton’s National Action Network and $165,000 to People for the American Way, two organizations with extreme left-wing agendas.
The population control advocates at the Sierra Club pocketed $150,000 in NEA dues dollars. The Zimbabwe Teachers Association is even partially bankrolled ($10,000) by the NEA. Seriously?
That union, the ZIMTA, is aligned with despotic dictator Robert Mugabe’s political party, media reports show.
Some will argue that these teachers unions can contribute their income to whatever organization they like. We agree, and strongly defend that freedom.
But we also feel that union membership, and the taxpayers that pay their wages, deserve to know where the money is going and why. We also believe that teachers should be able to keep their dues dollars from financing union PACs, if they wish.
Former NEA president Reg Weaver has repeatedly claimed that the NEA’s membership is evenly divided into Democrats, Republicans and Independents. We suspect AFT members are similarly split.
Then why does their union not distribute their dues dollars evenly to reflect that split? That’s a good question, and one we would encourage union teachers to demand an answer to.

There have been many Republicans denouncing Mugabe not just for ethnic cleansing of the whites but also of native Zimbabweans who allied with the farmers. Farm destruction is all about destroying both white opposition and the livelihoods of black opposition. Trouble is that the MSM doesn't run the stories so you just don't get to discover. Look up Roger Bates on National Review for some decent examples. Also Mugabe (aka Mugarbage), has been lucky in that the world turned their attention away from the Zimbabwean election (with transparent ballot boxes overseen by the military with guns) when the Pope passed away.

To suggest that just merely exposing it is sufficient is being delusional. Sounds fair that teachers should be informed about where their dues are spent. We should probably put the same requirement on corporations to notify shareholders whenever they want to contribute to political causes.

I am a retired teacher lifetime member of NEA. I am appalled at where the money is going. I had no idea. I think this information is great, most teachers have no idea! The NEA has been taken over by the far left and they are using teacher's money to promote a far-left agenda, what a shame!
Every day Public school teachers do less and want more more more. They are over paid and under worked, they are paid twice the national average wage and they work less than 8 hours a day on less than half the days in a year.
How about the results? They teach our kids a bunch of clap-trap so they will accept it when they become voters. This puts a lot of teachers in a bind too. Most of us would not support the Union in doing this but they don't listen to the members on these issues. And let's be honest- only a fool teaches without being a member of the union, an that's not the union's fault- that's the lawyer's fault. When I taught in the States, I was a member for ONE reason only. The liability insurance. I saw what happened to a teacher who wasn't a member. He was accused of hitting a kid, but the video tape of the incident clearly showed he never touched the kid, just the opposite. He still had to pay out of pocket a lawyer to defend himself in court. Of course then I moved to an area where the union was in bed with the district, and was useless.
So the point is, that the majority of teachers are stuck between a rock and a hard place. The Union won't listen, but we dare not not be members.

The reason the money isn't plit evenly is simple. Those paying the dues are not aware that the union is using that money for those purposes. If they were there would be hell to pay from it's members. My neighbor is a teacher. I think I'll inform him of what his union is spending it's money on. I don;t think he is going to be too happy about it. I am from a conservative, rural area so I do not completely agree with you. Teachers tend to be Democratic because their incomes are related to government…I think that there is a disconnect however between teachers voting for a bigger paycheck, a living wage, in my case, and buying the socialist system. Mostly teachers have no idea what happens at the national level, we are too busy with our students to pay much attention. I think that is going to change as articles such as this one come to light. We did not make the wages you read about in RI, believe me,some years teachers qualified for food stamps–true story. So working for a decent wage was a real and valued activity.
It is human nature to seek God. Populist liberals have allowed progressives* to push God out of their lives and that in turn has left an empty spot. Attempting to fill that emptiness is what leads people to follow what seem to be well meaning causes such as "Global Warming" or "Hope and Change."
When these causes are exposed as frauds, it leaves the populist liberals in despair and disarray as day after day they witness their progressive* heroes twist and turn as their lies become more and more bizarre. We have all been duped at one time or another and we need to improve our defences.

It's a well-known tactic of teachers unions to pack their own school board with people who are in their pocket, such as spouses/relatives of teachers or teachers who work in other districts.
In exchange, board members that are cozy with the union get special favors for their own children in school.

I resigned from the IFT/AFT this year based on a religious objection to just these kinds of donations and afiliations. Most of my colleagues simply had no clue that you could do this…neither did the union higher ups because it was originally denied until my lawyer cited federal law. I donated my money to the American Cancer
Society. It is illegal for the union to use dues for political activity according to my lawyer, but they do it. Where else does this money come from? The rank and file have no clue what the union is up to. How does giving to ACORN help us educate children? "…only a fool teaches without being in a union…" There are many groups that will defend a teacher in a case involving liability. Otherwise, you are obligated to any collective bargaining agreements. School districts will also support such a case that you have cited, Asatruteacher. It is in their best interest to do so. It is difficult for me to justify the enormous dues to a union simply to cover the remote possibility that I might be accused of something that I didn't do. As I've said before, there are many groups that will defend such a case.

I was a substitute at two locals schools for 4 years. During that time I worked an average of 4 days a week and got to know the faculty pretty well. One of the schools was fairly new so a large number of the teachers were young and just graduated.
I believe they are deliberately misled during college about the political environment in the school system. Still, even after being slapped with the realities, they keep teaching because they really do care about children. Teaching really is a calling. Many new teachers don't last very long. That is why there is a shortage.
The more experienced teachers fall into two groups; those who still care enough to persevere, and those who only care about their benefits. The latter are the ones who should be fired. They don't care about students. They only show up for the benefits. They are also the type of teachers who get promoted to principal and higher. It is because of them we have spoiled, indoctrinated brats and their parents ruining our schools.
If you meet someone who has been teaching more than 10 years, is shunned by the rest of the faculty, yet whose students remember them fondly years later, then you have met one of the true heroes we used to think all teachers were.
Any union members who are conservatives must be fuming mad about this kind of stuff. If they forced me into a union and then forced me to support liberal anit-american groups with my money I would be in court to stop it. I guess conservatives just can't take union jobs in general on moral grounds.

Some of us truly care about the kids we teach…we also abhore the union…which is why I resigned. But you are right, many show up for a paycheck and don't even attempt to make a difference. They don't try because it doesn't affect the paycheck. Even sucky tenured teachers still get paid. Short of hitting a kid, you can't fire them. Even hitting doesn't get everyone fired, they just "dance the lemon" into a 'curriculum' job so the the teacher who hit a kid can keep her unfunded pension. (That is based on a true story).
I challenge teachers to stand up to the unions and learn what it is the unions are up to. It isn't to make schools better and improve best practices.
Plenty of us are conservative, Uncle Sam. I did stop it, but I was warned not to "spread the word" about my successful resignation and "organize" against the union. That, apparently, is illegal. The union says you don't have to be a member, but you still have to contribute your fair share, which miraculously is the same as the dues. The sucky part is is that this is legal in states that are not right to work states. I got out based on a religious objection, which was legitamate. I opposed their support and promotion of organizations that support and promote abortion. My case cited federal law which trumped Illinois Labor Laws.
We had a new teacher a few years ago who told her 4th graders that George W. Bush was a nazi and if their parents voted for him they would be drafted. Funny, I couldn't find that chapter in their Social Studies book. I also couldn't find the legislation that reinstated the draft. I'm going to guess that most of the 4th grade bilingual kids didn't even know what a nazi is. I love when teachers use propoganda as factual current events. Oh…she now has tenure, whihoo, and her first (of many) complaints this year was that since she was tenured, she shouldn't have two mornings of door duty. Nice. I wish I could blame her tenure on the union she loves, but I blame my administrator who evaluated her. While I hate the union, it is sometimes the stupid principals who don't understand how to evaluate a teacher or are afraid to. So, justamom, you are right.

Your attorney is right about the illegal status of these contributions. If you have such evidence, turn it over to the government with a great deal of fanfair and whatever news coverage you can get. If we are a nation of laws, make them put up or shut up!
I agree, my mom was a teacher through the 50s and it was nothing like today. Today the teachers who care are between a rock and a hard place and that will not change until Americans step up and reset the political environment. The unions are sucking the life out of America, look at California.

The union 'launders' the money in and out of so many organizations, but it seems to end up with left leaning PACs and Democratic candidates. If the money they give to these organization isn't dues money, then where does the union get it? I think they have covered their asses with all of the laws they have influenced in their favor. The National Right to Work Foundation fights this all of the time. I wish I had the wherewithall to prove what seems obvious. In my workplace, the rank and file are not giving extra money for PACs…they just tow the line and many vote for whomever the union supports without so much as understanding who the candidate is and whether or not he is good for their families and communities as a whole. Many teachers don't get that their pensions are taxpayer funded….neither do the taxpayers. It is frustrating to say the least.

Ok, boys and girls, one more time…NEA Union dues ARE NOT used to give to politcal campaigns. NEA has a poltical action committee and it raises tons of money every year from voluntary donations. Then they give it out like any other citizen group can (Right to Life, NRA, etc) to people who agree with what they agree with. I do not agree with their choices often, but they are not breaking the law. If they were, Mark Levin would have had them indicted. God knows, it is his fondest wish. Go tell your teacher neighbor whatever you like, but that is the truth. Perhaps while you are there, your enighbor can explain the difference between its and it's.
