Frances Fox Piven: ACORN-style Mass Movement May Deepen Foreclosure Crisis, Forcing Government & Banks to Address Homeownership Rights

The government would not be able to keep up (this was a time when a government could actually go bankrupt), the system would crash and a Democratic presidential administration would be “forced” to implement a “guaranteed annual income” for Americans.
Fast forward to the 21st Century. America’s in the midst of a home foreclosure crisis.
Piven’s new strategy? Force the government and banks to deal with the problem by convincing approximately two million people to refuse to leave their homes. ACORN has been implementing this strategy with its Home Defenders program.
Is it possible ACORN sting man James O’Keefe could have spoiled the implementation of this new strategy? The O’Keefe-Giles videos surfaced at precisely the right time to disrupt the Home Defenders scheme.
The organization was rocked by the major scandal and knocked on its heels politically and financially.
Will Piven’s new strategy work? Will another group fill in where ACORN left off? Will ACORN be able to regather to still take advantage of the on-going crisis? Time will tell. Hopefully Americans will recognize and reject her plan so another 1970s New York City story will be averted.

She is however telling people how to invoke homesteading to resist foreclosure which in itself will cause the banks to lose money. But the real loser will be the responsible homeowner. As homes foreclose the responsible howeowner loses even more equity and value in their property, when the foreclosed owners don't leave, you end up with homes that fall apart in a few short years that affects every home in that community.
I lived through the urban nightmare that was New York aka "Fun City" in the late '60's and '70's.
Seeing the almost unbelievable deterioration of dozens of neighborhoods under fatuous bleeding-heart liberal Democrat mayors is what turned me into a Conservative. We elected Jim Buckley to the Senate in 1970.

I hate to say it, but the progressive/socialist revolutionaries, of which Piven and Obama are representative of, are a smart bunch. They are shifting their programs to the federal government that were operated by ACORN. Why else would Freddie and Fanny get Unlimited funds. 3 Trillion in debt?? This is nothing different than what Lenin and Marx did in the early 20th century. Starve the people (literally) and become the all knowing, all seeing agency that controls every aspect of your life. When people have no choice but to turn to the imperial federal government, they have you right where they want you. Take away individual rights and freedom of speech, choice (this health insurance 'reform' bill comes to mind) and you have a docile electorate that has no choice but to 'submit' to the statist's utopian ideals. We have no 'representative government' now and that's by design. Oligarchs will always tell you what is best for you and goes against every principle that our country was founded on. These creepy people never quite — the people never would have gotten into those homes in the first place if not for the government programs that allowed liars to get loans and make th rest of society pay for them.

ACORN has a record of breaking into vacant foreclosed homes. Of course the homes have no insurance coverage from the sqyaters. Cops can let them stay in jail. Free housing and full service. 3 hots and a cot means dining which squaters do not have in a vacnat home.
There's a couple of things I don't understand here:
1.) Homestead is illegal….so an outright violation of law will have no impact on this "project". When I was younger I worked for the Sheriff's Dept. and in cases like this these people were "dragged" out of their homes. If they return once it was a trespass ticket, 2 times was defiant trespass and prison time.
2.) How is it that these principals Of Coward (not an accident either) and Piven be widely know and talked about and there isn't a complete and utter outrage by people and I don't mean outrage like Oh Shucks! I MEAN OUTRAGE LIKE LET ME GET MY GUN AND STORM SH!T !!!!! OUTRAGE. If we don't learn from the mistakes of the past (mortgage disaster, welfare disaster, illegal immigration DISASTER) we ARE DOOMMED!!! I read the reason Freddie and Fannie are being funded with no end in sight is because China (who has a stake in both) demanded it! In Texas there is a law called "Adverse Posession" This is known as the "Squatters Law". For it to work to the advantage of the squatter, they must live openly in the house and have the utilities turned on in their name and it helps for them to make improvements. I can't name any instances where this has worked out though.
I am afraid that if her (Piven) plans work out she would end up by not being a slave but would end up being an administrator in the Obama administration. Obama has many more radicals to choose from to fill up all the slots he thought he was going to have to fill. I think I heard that George Soros was going to be the Minister of Lies, which in the Obama administration would be one of the highest positions in the new world that Obama would like to create.

This link is a defense of the CRA but the information discussed shows how the politicians ignored the free market system to achieve social goals.
The Pivens framework is present in the CRA and until it is seriously addressed the likelihood of the Pivens model succeeding is high. The Federal Reserve and political class will defend the CRA framework to the end and the Republicans are afraid to challenge the regulations. Therefore the likelihood of a Piven success is better than 50/50.
The Pivens explanation of the looming business foreclosures rings very true. The CRA has been expanded to small business over the years with little regard to risk analysis. If the CRA is not addressed the Pivens scenario will come true. The supplied link shows how the too big to fail framework came into being. This will send the liberals into a tizzy.
Of course there is sympathy for those who are not able to keep there homes, but this type of "civil disobedience" will do nothing more than cause others to lose their homes as well. If the banks are not able to either be paid for the properties or reclaim them, then others who need loans or financial assistance will not get it either.
Solvency is what banks are all about. This will only result in more restrictions for lending, but higher insurance, higher taxes, escrow/title costs, etc.
The irony this classic PROGRESSIVE mindset (give homes to people who can't afford them) is what got us here in the first place and will only further hurt the very people they are claiming to want to help.

What about when the property taxes are not paid? Will there be civil discourse against the government too when they come to evict?
There is another opportunity to squash this BS, get the utility companies to buy into the premise that if you are squatting or in foreclosure, utilities can not be turned on or maintain. It is only going to hurt them in the long run cause God knows that if the mortgage is not being paid then chances are the heat and water bills aren't either.

As a Real Estate Agent I can tell you that this stragey is in play today and happening as we speak. What you see it as is 'Short Sales'. All the banks who hold the mortgages on these homes and underwater homes are moving towards the position of getting the occupant/debtor to stay in the home or sell it for fair market value. This is a Short Sale. And all banks are looking for is fair market value. Honestly, the banks and mortgage lenders have no other choice. If they are percieved as too 'heartless' by the Feds then laws will be enacted to force them to do somethign they do not want to do. They are making it easier to do a short sale.
It's a very slow process, but soon foreclosure evictions will dwindle in number even though foreclosure rates are going higher and at an all time high. They wont go away as there are always people who will not pay – Note to the big government opponents; it is the local Police Authority who actually evicts the people from the houses. Here in California it is the Sherriff's Department of each county.

For these reasons I think that what Pivens talks about will not occur but in the most distressed inner city areas. As far as I am concerned they can have those properties. I would short sell them to investors who can collect the rents from those people who should have never had a loan because they did not qualify in the first place. I do not have much sympathy for the banks/lenders. They knew they were giving loans to unqualified people in the first place so they could make money. We call those 'Liar Loans'. My brother is going to lose his house which he has been paying on for 15 years. His business is construction, and business has shut down and he hasn't worked for months, so he can't pay his mortgage, nobody will lend him any money against his equity and he is talking to investors who are more than willing to take over "payments".
He has been out making applications, but there is nothing there for him. He puts on that he is not worried, but I know better. I am very worried about his situation.

So let me understand this: the squatters are evicted by the sheriff and if there are too many squatters in a given area, the government would have to call in the " federal squatter police" to help local law enforcement.

The got a loan from a bank that enabled them to get into a house, and signed a contract promising to make payments on that loan. Piven makes these people out to be victims. While I'm sure that there were plenty of decent folks who were taken advantage of by unscrupulous lenders, the bulk of this housing crisis was brought on by the idea the owning a home is a right. And who is one of the biggest cheerleaders of this idea? Frances Fox Piven.

Sad to say, but you are spot on about China calling the shots. I have not heard about the China-Fanny-Freddy connection, but it makes sense. I have to check on the Chinese connection. I know this much though, China is starting to dictate some of our foreign policy decisions.
All right, I am a college student. What say I refuse to pay my tuition or am unable to pay? I attend a private university and it certainly isn't cheap, so can I just stay on campus and say it is my right to be educated? No, they'd tell me to go to Hell and rightfully so since someone else would gladly inhabit my spot and can afford said tuition.
In this case, I would simply go to a state school where costs are cheaper but the education is just as worthwhile. This is the world we live in: every damn thing is a "right", unfortunately these people mean a free lunch by their interpretations of the word right. You have the right to purchase however you may choose but people are clueless about economization. I go to school right by Newark, NJ, and there are more satellite dishes there than in my reasonably affluent neighborhood. Bust your ass, keep your family afloat, then you can get luxuries; some people think this works in reverse though.

Bob: your brother and many other self employed individuals (myself included) that have earned their living honorably in the construction/Real Estate and related industries, are mostly never spoken about. I have been a Realtor for more than six years and have witnessed countless operators fail. Guess what? there are no jobs out there and none of us qualify for unemployment benefits. We are not counted on the State or National unemployment statistics that we hear about everynight. The number must be staggering if all of the self employed people were included in the data.

Our daughter and husband did everything right, put a big down payment upfront, did not pull out any $$ in refi's, bought way below what they 'could afford' (much more stringent than the bank allowed) and have been honorably paying their mortgage for the past 18 months after Tom lost his job. Thank God he has been getting consulting jobs. But here is where they are today:
1. Her home insurance is due to go up 33%/yr 2. Her home has just been designated in a flood plain so they must buy FEMA flood insurance (around a thousand/year but who knows?)3. The redistricting of the boys' school from a Grade A to a Grade F-gang school is proceeding 4. Her firm dropped the family coverage (another 500/mo)
5. She has not had a raise in 3 years because the job situation has been so difficult 6. They just put the home on the market: they had hoped for a modest 325k to recoup the real dollars they put in but the Realtor said her neighborhood is now going for $160K.
Split it into groups with similar motivations.

When Glass-Steagal was repealed in the late nineties, the separation between traditional banking (deposits being the basis of lending) and investment houses (wild speculation at times) ceased to exist. This separation was put in place after the Depression to keep the very situation we are in from happening. In hindsight, it appears that they had to do away with Glass-Steagal to incentivize the banks to take in these bad loans. The worst part is that people like your brother, Bob, and our daughter could be swept away in a lawless tide of acorn nuts…God help us all.

Thank you for that information ane. My brother will survive. I have told him that he and his wife can stay with me as long as they like. Luckily both his kids have left to serve in the Coast Guard. However he is ashamed and humiliated to be in this situation. He is the type to take pride in not being dependent on anyone, much less the government. The only good thing about his situation is that he has found friends that he didn't realize he had and the family has rallied around him and his wife. Financial problems are one of the most common problems that break up marriages… the ones that are weak. He and his wife are staying together no matter what.
I keep thinking that I will wake up eventually and realize that this was all just a bad dream (nightmare).

The saddest thing is that, as a young woman I attended college in the '60's, where the Pivens' book "Regulating the Poor" was the book pushed in all sociology classes. I attended a very small, conservative mid-American college in a dinky little town, and this college was turning out future socialists and radicals every year by the droves. We are now in our late fifties and sixties, and we are now realizing we were being cooked in our own rebellious teen and young adult juices during and after the Vietnam War. We were hooked on a "new" political system that has now, before our eyes, begun to steal our country from us.

If the popular media was discussing this topic in the way it deserved and the average person out there knew more about this threat they would be far more outraged. That is the *reason* that the popular media does not address these issues.
It was a “what if”…question? We as a nation will need to pay close attention for several election cycles. But, if the ballot box ceases to work then we must consider civil disobedience, our strength is our productivity, become unproductive, and the beast starves, Galt’s Gulch if you will. Boycott products and advertisers is easy, don’t buy their goods, and let them know!

Could work and/or start a large civil disturbance in some areas. Between the banks appearing unsympathetic and/or being demagogued to the basic reality of how many people want to risk their lives to protect their property rights.
Then again, it could also go very badly if the general public did rise and decide it was unacceptable behavior and demand property rights be respected. Just like the Obama administration, it could become a teaching moment that made the public more anti left (with the acorn type organizers getting beaten down in the process).
In EVERY communist system, the party ruling class live like royalty. And they all feel like they are entitled to keep their wealth, while all the serfs are "given" enough to subsist. This old broad is living quite well now, and you can see that she isn't worried about what will happen to her when the system collapses. You can bet that she has no plans to live on the government's "guaranteed salary".
By now, I think most of us are beginning to to understand that this won't end well. So much money they designed Medicare so no one would notice they also designed their fat life pensions. Then they still had to shut the Governors up with telling them to set up Medicaid and they would match the funds. How is it justified that their benefit package is better than a 30 year military veteran or any soldier totally disabled from taking bullets to protect others. Almost forgot…many people died without collecting a penny of their Social Security Savings. By law the money was for those paying in so about 6 presidents ago…way back around the Korean war…one of the leaders said…we can take a lot of that Social Security money and finance a war really easy. If it goes broke lets blame those least able to defend themselves…the elderly and the infirm.
