Transparency Is First Rationing Victim of Reid’s ObamaCare

The Obama-Pelosi-Reid regime marched into office pledging to provide the most transparent federal government in American history. I was looking forward to that.
On Inauguration Day, President Obama told his senior staff:
The way to make government responsible is to hold it accountable. And the way to make government accountable is make it transparent so that the American people can know exactly what decisions are being made, how they’re being made, and whether their interests are being well served.
Mr. President, live up to your statement and ask Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to simply show us the bill.
How much have we backslid? Just a few months ago, Americans were asking members of Congress to read the bills. But that was apparently too much of a challenge. Now we’re simply asking if we can see the crucial Senate health care plan.
Are we sticking our noses where they don’t belong? Are we wrong to take Reid at his word, based on a posting on his website, that transparency is a critical part of the health care reform process? Reid’s statement from early November, entitled, “Transparency is one of the guiding principles of health insurance reform,” included this:
And as we head for the finish line, one of the most important parts of this process is transparency.
So Mr. Reid, SHOW US THE BILL.
Sen. Mitch McConnell put it aptly:
And here’s the most outrageous part: at the end of this rush, they want us to vote on a bill that no one outside the Majority Leader’s conference room has even seen.
As an aside, Sen. Reid also said this in the November 2 statement:
We have listened to the vast majority of Americans who know that a public option for health insurance is the best way to keep competition up, keep costs down and keep insurance companies honest.
Then why drop it, ole Har? But I digress…
President Obama and Sen. Reid set the transparency bar for themselves – we didn’t. It wasn’t some standard imposed on them by conservatives in a game of gotcha. They made the pledge.
Yet with one of the most paradigm-shifting pieces of legislation of this decade, Sen. Reid won’t even show the bill, let alone post it online for taxpayers to see.
If the Democrats in Congress give two wits about the taxpayers of this country, they should show us the bill or vote “no” because average Americans have been excluded from the process.

If the bill is available to all senators (I don't know that it is or not) then we should expect a member of the minority to make it public…no?

Average Americans were never supposed to be included in the process of drafting or revising a bill. We elect representatives that have our best interests at heart and decide for us. If after the voting takes place we believe our representatives have failed us we elect someone else. I agree that Harry Reid drafting a bill behind closed doors and putting it to a vote so that only the writers of the bill know what is in it is wrong. But come on, we elect these guys for a reason.
The only time I take Obama as sincere is when he expresses cowardice to foreign foes and malice to domestic enemies.

Actually, I think they're proud as he!! of it but know that 90% of Americans would be against it. That's the truly sickening part of it, that Americans voted these idiots into office and let them stay there.
It's NOT available. It won't be until sometime today *IF* everything stays on course. That's the real problem with the bills, it's that they are kept secret until the last minute, and then a Vote before anyone's had a chance to read it. While doubtful, it is possible on page 3002 there's a provision outlawing heterosexuality and creating the "United States Church of Satan" as our countries official religion. I've seen no proof that these *AREN'T* in the bill, so I just have to assume that they are and hold Harry accountable.
They should really wait until Easter to pass this bill instead of Christmas. It isn't the birth of healthcare reform, it's the crucifixion.

Sorry David, but you are way off-base here. It is true that we have a republican form of government, which shields us from mob rule (IOW, direct democracy), but that does not mean our lawmakers get to hide from the people.
How is a congressman supposed to know the will of his constituents on a piece of legislation, if the content of that legislation is hidden from the people?
Harry Reid's maneuvering is a blatant attempt at forcing through unpopular legislation in a manner that would make any oligarch proud.
As of now,Fox reports that Nelson has caved—he got money and he's not up for re-election til'12……….Talk about a piece of excrement……………..
My guess is that once this boondoogle sees the light of day Barack Hussein Obama will become a lame duck if not impeached. Pushing thru legislation which is against the will of 60% of the Nation is tantamount to their political annihilation and far far worse. Well, we know Reid's Health Care bill has been a closely guarded secret, and I wonder how any Senator could vote for it because who really knows what it contains. The passage of Health Care will doom the Democrats in 2010, they will lose the House (I can't wait to see the look on plastic Pelosi's face when its determined she is no longer the Speaker), and they will lose 10 seats in the Senate. Then on to 2012 to send the Chicago crowd back to the windy city.

Nelson, who has been pushing for tougher restrictions on federal funding for abortion, emerged from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s office just after 9:30 p.m. following talks with Reid and Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), a leading supporter of abortion rights.
Nelson provided few details about the negotiations. It’s “one of those situations where it’s probably best for everybody to sleep on it tonight and talk again tomorrow,” he said.
Boxer, who came out later, was more upbeat. “I’m optimistic that we can get 60 votes,” she said.

Nelson told reporters late Friday that he remained dissatisfied with abortion-related language in the $848 billion bill. But he is also seeking changes to benefit his home state while easing the bill’s burden on factions of the health-care industry, including home health-care services and health-insurance providers.
“We’re working on a lot of things,” Nelson said during a break in the talks. “Whether we’ve decided anything or not, the answer is probably not.”

Your statement seethes with elitism. So, are "above-average" Americans allowed in on the process? You're also aiming at a straw man. No-one is asking to be "included" in the process — we're asking to SEE THE BILL. You can't well determine how your representative has done unless you see what he or she is voting upon. I also fail to see where posting the bill before voting on it is such a terrible thing. Anything that allows the voters to be better informed ABOUT HOW THEIR REPRESENTATIVE IS DOING is a good thing. I know you'd rather make a choice every few years and bury our heads in the sand until then, but I regard that as fatalism if not a kind of Tory elitism, and I doubt that I'm alone in such.

The CBO can only use the numbers provided by the Congress, which has been backing out a lot of the costs into separate bills. This scam alone will bankrupt the country, plus lower the quality of healthcare and cause severe rationing. It's the seniors who will pay the price, but that's part of the plan. The biggest difference between then and now is how many people are online and keep things in discussion. Things won't just be glossed over now and allowed to die away. There were millions who were on line, back then, on right leaning, as well as mixed political forums, there were marches and there were people who compiled hundreds of pages of stuff, that they handed out, in person, to every member of congress. And there were people who those on line educated and informed, so it was a lot bigger than you imagine. Hells bells, the first march was even televised, THE WHOLE THING, and not ignored by the all of the MSM, nor lied about, as the Tea Parties and 9/12 was.
We all claimed that "we would not be silenced" too and we haven't been; though many of us are scattered now.

I don't know about being too young "back then" since I am 45 now, but I did not see or feel the anger I do now! However I do accept that I might have missed it also since I wasn't online like I am now… I have read history quite a bit and I agree that in the past we have just traded back and forth. that said, i am holding out hope that things MAY change for the better and people will hold their elected representatives RESPONSIBLE on what they do in our name and do not re-elect them just because they have name recognition.

For example, when Carter was president, I didn't know too many Dems. I went to visit a relative in another state and while there, overheard a bunch of people I didn't know, all of them Dems ( had nothing at all to do with said relative…..we were out to dinner and these strangers were at another, close-by table ), all of them having a high old time shredding Carter and his presidency.
Back then, there were no political forums, as there are today, on the net; there was hardly a net at all.
Perhaps some of the "man on the street" things are cherry-picked and therefor corrupt, but if you talk to people/just listen in on strangers' conversations, many people are not just palpably ignorant, they're stupid beyond words.
An awful lot of people, average, above average, well below average are very angry now; just as they were back when Carter was president. I was not referring to myself when I said I did not see or feel the anger. I was referring to seeing and feeling it from others I worked with and was around. Personally I was angry and upset about the way things were being done then. I did what I could as I could by supporting candidates I agreed with. I have no doubt what you are saying is 100% factual, since I have read your postings before today. I have seen the "man on the street" interviews also, but think about as much of them as i do polls. For the most part they are cherry-picked, in my opinion, and carry no real weight. I do believe that the majority of regular people in this country WILL stand up and be heard in the coming elections. The cloture rule originally required a supermajority of two-thirds of all senators "present and voting" to be considered filibuster-proof.[4][5] For example, if all 100 Senators voted on a cloture motion, 67 of those votes would have to be for cloture for it to pass; however if some Senators were absent and only 80 Senators voted on a cloture motion, only 54 would have to vote in favor.[6] However, it proved very difficult to achieve this; the Senate tried eleven times between 1927 and 1962 to invoke cloture but failed each time. Filibuster was particularly heavily used by Democrat Senators from Southern states to block civil rights legislation.[7]
In 1975, the Democratic Senate majority, having achieved a net gain of four seats in the 1974 Senate elections to a strength of 61 (with an additional Independent caucusing with them for a total of 62), reduced the necessary supermajority to three-fifths (60 out of 100). However, as a compromise to those who were against the revision, the new rule also changed the requirement for determining the number of votes needed for a cloture motion's passage from those Senators "present and voting" to those Senators "duly chosen and sworn". Thus, 60 votes for cloture would be necessary regardless of whether every Senator voted. The only time a lesser number would become acceptable is when a Senate seat is vacant. (For example, if there were two vacancies in the Senate, thereby making 98 Senators "duly chosen and sworn", it would only take 59 votes for a cloture motion to pass.) [6]
The new version of the cloture rule, which has remained in place since 1975, makes it considerably easier for the Senate majority to invoke cloture. This has considerably strengthened the power of the majority, and allowed it to pass many bills that would otherwise have been filibustered. (The Democratic Party had held a two-thirds majority in the 89th Congress of 1965, but regional divisions among Democrats meant that many filibusters were invoked by Southern Democrats against civil rights bills supported by the Northern wing of the party.) Some senators wanted to reduce it to a simple majority (51 out of 100) but this was rejected, as it would greatly diminish the ability of the minority to check the majority.
