‘Independent’ Report Reveals: ACORN’s Problems Are Sooo 2008
by Kyle OlsonThe “independent” investigation of ACORN has been completed, and the final report is in.
The verdict? ACORN has done nothing illegal, and most of its problems stem from the subpar leadership of its founder and former “chief organizer,” Wade Rathke. As long as Rathke and his allies are out of the picture, everything should be good to go at ACORN headquarters, according to Scott Harshbarger, former attorney general of Massachusetts.

I get the feeling Mr. Harshbarger produced exactly the type of report (which can be viewed at ACORNcracked.com) that the ACORN board of directors paid him to produce: a rationalization of the group’s behavior, designed to deflect the growing chorus of criticism and breathe new life into the organization.
I doubt that anybody will be fooled by the silly conclusions in Harshbarger’s report. But I fear that ACORN’s friends in the White House and Congress may use it as an excuse to allow the organization back into the federal government’s good graces.
One of Harshbarger’s most startling conclusions was that ACORN Housing Corp. employees committed no crimes when they were caught on video repeatedly giving advice to a couple posing as a pimp and prostitute. He even suggests that the employees may have been represented in a false light, and were not as guilty as they appeared on video. From the report:
While some of the advice and counsel given by ACORN employees and volunteers was clearly inappropriate and unprofessional, we did not find a pattern of intentional, illegal conduct by ACORN staff; in fact, there is no evidence that action, illegal or otherwise, was taken by any ACORN employee on behalf of the videographers.
The videos that have been released appear to have been edited, in some cases substantially, including the insertion of a substitute voiceover for significant portions of Mr. O’Keefe’s and Ms. Giles’s comments, which makes it difficult to determine the questions that ACORN employees were responding to. A comparison of the publicly available transcripts to the released videos confirms that large portions of the original video have been omitted from the released versions.
The report also implies that ACORN has become a functionally sound organization, now that Rathke is allegedly out of the picture.
ACORN’s governance and managerial weaknesses are deeply rooted in the policy and philosophy of the founder and his leadership team, and stem from the errors and poor judgments they made. The reform leadership, many of whom also served in the Rathke era, is now reaping what Rathke sowed, in combination with the fallout from their own failure to question or challenge him.
There is a general consensus among leaders, organizers and observers that, under the prior administration, ACORN grew too large too quickly, and efforts were not made to grow in a reasonable, cautious manner or with an adequate infrastructure.
Harshbarger goes on to urge ACORN to take “any additional actions needed to sever ties with its founder, his external allies, as well as any ongoing board and/or staff litigation.”
So everything will be fine, as long as Rathke is gone and nobody allows him to sneak back in. Is that really your final answer, Mr. Harshbarger?
I trust that Harshbarger knows he’s really not doing ACORN any favors. The only way for that organization to reform, and clean up its sullied reputation, is to face up to all of its wrongdoing. I’m talking about the pimp and prostitute videos, the alleged voter registration frauds, the alleged misuse of taxpayer funds, etc.
ACORN leaders should also be forced to reconsider their slimy tactics, like “seizing” foreclosed homes or bullying corporations into making cash contributions.
Only clear acts of atonement, and clear changes in policy, will begin to convince the public that perhaps ACORN deserves a second chance. That will take a great deal of time and real effort on the part of ACORN’s leadership.
Unfortunately, there’s reason to fear that Harshbarger’s report may indeed pay dividends for ACORN. There are plenty of ACORN alumni in the Obama administration and Congress who are eager to forgive the organization, and Harshbarger’s report may be the excuse they’ve been waiting form.
I’ve already seen movement in this direction, even before the report was made public. Obama’s Justice Department recently weighed in with a legal opinion, saying the federal government may honor all contracts it made with ACORN prior to the Congressional cutoff of funds.
That ruling alone could put ACORN back in business, if it withstands the likely legal challenges. So hold your breaths, everyone. Despite all of the unbelievable misdeeds that have been exposed in recent months, ACORN is still alive and kicking.

Brilliant analogy! Let's see how well their stamina upholds after the 2010 sweep.
agree….as long as ACORN has a "get out of jail free" card from their ex attorney in the White House…..they will continue to drop that card every time they need it…..
why didn't the report focus on the FBI investigation?? or The files recovered in LA dumpster?? or the back taxes due the IRS?? or the co-mingling of funds between multiple 501 (c) entities and bank accounts??? etc etc etc etc etc ….oh yeah, that printing press just keep printing those "Get out of jail free " cards…….and then they are allowed to get paid because of previous contracts that were signed that can't be broke??? don't you think the IRS should garnish these contracts and take back the money ACORN owes the taxpayers??? Where in the constitution does it say corrrupt organizations can be paid by US govt. as long as there is a signed contract?? jeeeee, if only the MOB had known…..would have saved many of them from going to jail…..just sayin……
Maybe it's me, but I'm amazed at the illogical double standard of Progressives. When Enron or AIG does something illegal, or even immoral, with private monies there needs to be an immediate investigation and hell to pay. When ACORN/SEIU or Fannie or Freddie commits the same act, only on a broader scale, there is suddenly a non-commital exercis in prudence. After all, we should give some room for felonious behavior because the intentions of these groups are to (re)-elect Progressives, I mean, help the poor. Sorry, my bias was showing again. I guess public money is different from private.
I guess I ought not be suprised that ACORN hired a ringer to investigate themselves with OUR money. Once again, we got what we paid for!
The ACORN's and SIEUer's did not vote for Obama, they voted for a new form of Government and U.S.A. They must be stopped.
I also like this photo……obesity should be a crime, once we get Obamacare….cause these obese people will cost us all much more to maintain their health…i mean , if they are not willing to stop feeding themselves junk food, how do we expect them to be healthy??? with Obamacare, they are a burden on our healthcare system and should have to pay a obesity tax, per pound, for every pound they are overweight……
Obesity should be a crime?
Shame on you!
Those people have it down to a fine art form. Complete with "swaggah….."
This is all I would expect them to do. The REAL problem is the biased press. THAT is where you should direct your ire.
Nothign to see here .. did ya watch the undercover videos?? I mean the woman mentions that this is "illegal" I think twice !!!
Glenn Beck made a mockery of this last night — it was great !!!!
Yes!!! We all should celebrate the obese!! Especially of the Alcoholic, Tobacco addicted, gambling variety of fatso!
Think of all the Tax revenue they bring!! Serious stimulus coming in as they drink their kegs, smoking a carton of Newports after inhaling a couple jumbo sized bags of Doritos and playing they lotto! CHAHCHING!!
/SARC OFF
Seriously, I can imagine the Acorn advocates celebrating all kinds of things as long as they can tax them!
But I fear that ACORN’s friends in the White House and Congress may use it as an excuse to allow the organization back into the federal government’s good graces. (Courtesy of Kyle Olson)
Yes, I fear that to however, CONgress should be in the good graces of their constituents. Unfortunately/Fortunately We the People will remind them of their actions.
Remember to votei n 2010 and 2012
and you were expecting honest exposure perhaps?…
That wasn't going to happen- conversely no one is buying this 'investigation', either. The beat goes on…
doesn't all this add to the old saying, "BS makes the grass grow green!" ACORN = a huge pile of it.
Pure hate and distain of what our country was founded on drives the left and never will there be a day when lies dont spew from the holes under their noses. At the core of the hate lies what I feel is that a bunch of white people formed our country and they just cant stand that.
Lets just hope 2010 and 2012 the independents are behind the GOP. Because as we can See our Commander
and thief has pulled all the stops so ACORN does not go under. I'm not surprised about this just disappointed
that this is what our Government is about. Who ever herd of a Presidential candidate spending 750 million dollars to win an election. That was the icing on the cake upon everything else we learned during his campaign and after. The only good thing that can come out of this is the GOP can take back control of the House and Senate, and block everything that this "ass hole Obama" wants to do. Then 2012 throw the bum out in to the street with his section 8 family. But We the people have to get off our ases and get involved, or we can set here and be blogging cheerleaders. Come this coming year i'm doing my part by volenteering time to get the vote out. That is all we have to do is counter attack, do what they do but lthe legal way. They can have Acorn, SEIU to do their bidding for them, but we have to do our part. I was nice enough to write Obama,Reid,Biden and that bitch that is speaker of the house that come 2010 & 2012 that their services will be no longer needed. Just in PA. alone i was able to sway people from the Democrat party to the Republican side. I wrote a nice letter to our Senator that my goal is to get his "Liberal" ass out of office. Right after the election last month that Obama worked so hard to win for Jersey,"An all Democrat state witch lost their Democrat Governor to a Republican. The Senator of Pennsylvania wrote me and said he was deeply concern about my concerns and he could do. I wote him back and said "Drop out next years election. I wote him when I found out he was for Obama care and i just wanted him to know that I intend to get as many democrats to switch to Republican by 2010 and that i was gaining ground.
Well right after the Democrat Governor lost to a Republican in NJ lets say i had his atention. From what i been reading around the country alot of Democrats are dropping out of the election next year and it is not even hear yet. "wow i wonder why?"
These ACORN's will all be cracked open in 2011, until then I don't have much hope of seeing any real investigations
Firing someone from a Government union is theorhetically possible, but as far as I know it's never been done.
Sending them to prison seems the only way, and even then I think their jobs are retained and they continue to get paid.
Corruption, Corruption, Corruption
Spot on, that's certainly what it was done for, something to pin their decision to re-instate funding on, something for Eric the "Bagman" to refer to.
Profascists (refuse to call them progressives) keep double books on everything, including the rules to live by, one for themselves, another for everyong else.
Yeah unless we can make a big change in 2010 these ACORNS will never be cracked open by a real investigation, this is just something for the Profascist troll's to hang a point on.
I don't blame you for calling them for what they are. I still call them by their given name and will yell from the mountain tops about their past, present, and future. I love when these double minded people are referenced in their own words. If it doesn't disgust somebody, it is the evidence of the devolution of the soul, the lack of conscience.
I'm curious about the issue of editing raised by Harshbarger. In his report he talks the videos being "heavily edited" and about "voiceovers" being done so as to make it difficult to determine what the employees may have been responding to.
Has O'Keefe responded to this charge? The first thing I thought was that Harshbarger is talking about the narration O'Keefe did on the videos. Voiceover? Yes. Improper? No. And we all know that each and every one of those 60 minutes sting shows was "heavily edited" for presentation, but when the perp complained about it, we all laughed at his desperation.
Of course — Harshbarger starts out saying that the employees acted "inappropriately", and thus pretty much concedes the point that O'Keefe's videos were trying to make. I suspect he's really just trying to inject a narrative into the public mind that says: Those videos were edited, so they're no more reliable than those documents Dan Rather tried to pass off.
I understand why you use their label, I just wish that we could inject a different "meme" for term progressive, they picked that name, like they pick all names, to mask their intentions.
Democrats have always been the pro-slavery party, after the civil war ended that, they had to find a different avenue, the "Progressive" movement gave them that avenue.
They will not be satisfied until we are all completely enslaved, they are regressives in that they wan't to return to the good old days when one man could completely own another.
What? You left out the best part, eugenics and the pre- 1930 adoration for any bastard form of Marxism, particularily fascim. They loved the structure and god like leadership of Mussolini and taught Hitler the virtues of genocide.
Now, they are infatuated with population control through abortion and mercy "non-treatment".
Love the photo!
There she is in all here glory, Moo-Moo, or Bon Bon or whatever the hell her name is. ACORN will not go quietly into the night.
Can you say independent investigation? Pleeese!
here's another thing that UNION / Government workers get
Headline "TSA puts workers on leave over online posting"
THEY WERE PUT ON LEAVE !!!! How about fire them !!!! Gubmint jobs man !!!
also watch Glenn Beck show you how ignorant ACORN thinks we are … it's so funny !!!

Why is that portly lady yelling in the photo? I'm not certain, but I suspect a woodchuck or a beaver or a similarly-jawed animal has got hold of her ankle. Obviously the woodchuck is in cahoots with Cheney. Woodchucks are known to buzz-saw through a young willow sapling in several seconds flat. The woodchuck will make short work of her tender ankle. I wonder if this incident will alter her perspective on nationalized health care? I would like PETA to comment from the woodchuck's perspective.
Is there an adjective more extreme than "portly"?
Don’t you mean cankles Christopher? These are the same people who have to pry themselves off the couch watching Oprah when they get the call from SEIU to mobilize and wreak havoc on good Americans. She probably has her great grand kids getting her food and cigarettes while cheering on this corruption so she can get medical for free… I mean that WE pay for.
Love that "change." How many people have more change, now, than dollars? ACORN has the dollars! Next time, I guess liberals will have to vote for lint, as all the change will be gone by then, too.
