Solidarity Schmolidarity: Teacher Larry Sand Exposes His Union
by Kyle OlsonWhen you spend day after day examining the self-serving agenda of the nation’s two largest teachers unions, you develop a tendency to think badly of teachers.

That’s a mistake. We have to remember that there are millions of great teachers out there, doing their best to help our children develop on a dialy basis. We have to remember that many teachers do not subscribe to the left-wing political agendas of their unions, or approve of their tactics.
Larry Sand is a great example. This recently-retired educator from Los Angeles was a member of the NEA-affiliated California Teachers Assocation. To his credit, he’s also a major pain in the backside of the CTA.
Sand is the founder and president of CTEN, or California Teachers Empowerment Network, an organization of union teachers who don’t approve of their union. He appeared at a recent “tea party” rally in his home state, and addressed the gathering about the gross misuse of dues dollars by the CTA.
He pointed out that the average California teacher pays $1,000 per year in dues to the CTA, meaning the union collects about $200 million in dues every year. Then Sand outlined some of the left-wing causes the union supports with that money.
The list includes opposition to a ballot proposal that would have banned sex offenders from the classroom, opposition to a ballot proposal that defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman, opposition to a ballot proposal that would have extended the service requirement for teacher tenture from 2-5 years, support for a plan to establish a single-payer health insurance system in California, and support for a ballot proposal that would have raised taxes.
“CTA is using your tax money to try to push something that will increase your taxes,” Sand told the crowd. “Something’s wrong.”
Even in a state like California, where average citizens are probably significantly more liberal than most Americans, we have to wonder if rank-and-file teachers know about this type of union spending, and if the majority would approve. Our guess is that a sizable percentage of members would be aghast, and would demand some fundamental policy changes at union headquarters.
We hope to see more educators like Sand come out of the woodwork in the near future, and speak on behalf of the silent millions who simply go to work every day and pay their dues. As more educators become aware of the activities of their unions, more will choose to send their dues money elsewhere, or will try to break with the unions altogether.
Some day, in the bright, distant future, we can foresee a nation of teachers who bargain individually, like the professionals they are.
So keep chipping away at the powerful CTA, Larry, and encourage others to do so, as well. Every brick that falls out of the wall makes the union a little less united and a little less harmful.

Interesting story. Larry Sand is to commended. Hopefully, one by one, more people like that will step forward.

I am a life-time member of NEA, and am appalled at some of the things I am now learning about the organization to whch I belonged for so long. I was always unhappy with the left-leaning agenda that they pushed, but now i am just ashamed. Larry Sand is right. I do not think most teachers have any idea of just how far this organization operates. It is time the fine teachers of America take back their organizations from the far-left loons that are running them, amd by the way we have also discovered that ARRP is in the hands of the same type, Wonder how many others.
I have a feeling that many, many teachers may come forward to take a stand against the teacher's union, when they realize that they are most likely in the majority. It's high time that our outstanding teachers stand up to the bullying arm of the union.
Teachers can make a difference not only in the classroom but for our nation.

i had a incident. i read the book by ann coulter about the errors in the joe mccarthy propaganda. when discussing it with a friend, who was a teacher, in the union. i was appalled by the communists that were covered for during the scandal. my friend told me, whats wrong with communism, it just was never done correctly. i was shocked. i asked her if she knows about the millions who were killed in the name of communism. she told me it was hysteria, just to try and stop it from being tried again. in my opinion, she was every bit as left wing as the union she was a member of.

I concur………
They probably know about it. The CTA does obnoxious radio ads with the head of the union openly supporting these things. I hear them all the time around elections… they sometimes try to put a school related spin on it… like single payer will help keep students ready to learn.. or something…
great….we need more teachers to come out and stand up for what's right!
Look at the financial statements filed online by the Teachers Unions, and you will quickly see the large salaries the top bosses make….some over 400,000 per year in salaries and perks. Plus, in the operating statements and balance sheets…you will see something over 20,000,000 spent on lobbyists and political activities…..very little cash actually used to help fund benefits for members/teachers…..
and they are so proud of the low high school graduation rates we have in many cities across America??? below 50% in most major inner cities….like Chicago. Oh I forgot, that's the BHO model to use for everyone in the future???
Your chasing links like that is getting annoying, Pushing your site is tolerable once per post on this site, more than that you are in danger of becoming a link wh—–
Sorry Pazzi, I didn't realize I had posted on this thread until I already submitted it. I will delete the extra post now.
And I didn't produce that video, I just posted it.
yes but, we cannot say that the extremism that communists showed in the pursuit of their ideal was the ideal. I do not want to defend communism but for the sake of discussion, true communism has never been tried, as your friend said. Every time communism has been tried, it has degenerated into some form of fascism. It has become oppressive and corrupt. Can we conclude that it is the ideology that corrupts its leaders or that the leaders were corrupt to begin with. Why is communism not working? I don't know, I just know it does not. We are probably in the same spot with capitalism. It has worked well for a period of time, but it is also laden with corruption at the top, it is also trying to change, if we are not careful, they will succeed in changing it.
Don't fool yourself Obama has no intention of calling his system anything other than capitalism, he will not admit being a socialist or the communist I think he is. So would history say that capitalism did not work?

Jason,
With all due respect, there is nothing wrong wih a little self promotion, to promote a little capitalism, but pazzi is right. I've been to your site, when you ere first getting it up and going and it was hard to navigate and you have made it better. That being noted, I wonder, do you post as much at the daily kooks, huffington, or moveoff.org as you do here? Breitbart, and Big Government has been pretty accomodating, and it has given you a lot of free eyeball exposure, but sometimes one must say: whoa.
People here have even gotten on me, for posting relevant links to the Canada Free Press, thinking I was you, here spamming. I am not affiliated with anyone, and don't spam. I only post relevant links. The fact remains, we all have to row this boat together (I was going to use the analogy of picking cotton, but was afraid someone would scream racism), and we are in this together. We need to be thankful we have an outlet, and not abuse it.
Cowboy,
No I don't post on Huffington. I don't want to give them a single visit. I really don't know what else to do to get my message out. I am not part of any organization or political group, but I do feel I have a different point of view, that has touched some.
Don't worry man, I am almost ready to throw the towel in and give up!
by the way we have also discovered that ARRP is in the hands of the same type, wonder how many others?
They all are!!!!
Jason,
Again, with all due respect, you do have a different perspective, and a good point of view. I wouldn't throw in the towel just yet.
Balance. Balance and moderation. You are riding a fine line I wouldn't want to ride. You have a site to promote. I am only here promoting our cause. i can twist off and go sideways, and make a fool of myslef if I choose to. You can't.
Keep up the good work Larry. The day is coming when people will be ashamed to belong to a union because most Americans will realize that unions are just a euphemism for collective blackmail.
The one thing that all these ideological systems ignores is basic human nature. The hope for a benevolent dictator is futile. Once someone gains unlimited power, by human nature, they become corrupted. As noble as any type of government may appear on the surface there are inherent faults that deter it from achieving its goals. Power, greed and corruption always win out in the end. Equality is like stasis in the universe, something which does not exist except in theory. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, different levels of education, different levels of drive. The inherent flaw in socialism and communism is that it cannot accomodate equality and still progress. Not all work is equal, some jobs are demeaning and others are gravy. Hence the idealistic view of communism and socialism is fantasy. As one who had just come out of the eastern block after the fall of the USSR, he described the work conditions under socialism: 'we pretended to work and they pretended to pay'
Cowboy,
I have made a total of $8 on my Google ad clicks, and about $20 on the stickers I sell. I don't promote the site for money. This is not my Job. I am just loosing all faith there is anyone in my Generation that hears me. I have been trying for a little over a month now, depleted my savings, and don't think my wife will stand for to much more. I am sorry for the lack of moderation and balance, but my time is limited.
I will not post any more off topic comments. I think I will just go back into my little life and let the rest of the world worry about this.
To all of those who have signed my petition and been patient with my off topic comments, thank you I really appreciate it.
This will be the last comment I post here.
Well hell man, don't be so thin skinned. You shouldn't take your toys and go home. if you want to play in this venue, you better grow a thicker hide.

Ok one last comment.
I won't take my toys. If anyone wants to take over the site it is yours at no charge. Just please do something positive with it. You can contact me from the site and we can work out how to transfer it over.
God Bless You All
I feel for you man, but dreams do not get achieved either cheaply or quickly. I have been working on my own dream for going on 7 years and been without an income for 6 years. It has nearly destroyed my marriage and I am close to losing my home. I would not encourage anyone to follow the path that I have taken but if you truely believe in something see it through. I was lucky enough to have friends who believed in me and I have always managed to find someone who could help in some way just in the nick of time. But at some point in time and on an ongoing basis you need to be able to step back and objectively reasess.
It is my fervent hope that the vast rank and file of all unions get lit up and take back control from their leaders. In nearly every case union leadership is little more than dictatorships. The leaders of these unions report to no one and get really really fat off the dues they recieve. They keep their benefits and their luxury lifestyles alive through lobbying congress and steering legislation to their benefit, many times not to the benefit of their members. You can throw in many of the not-for-profits like ACORN, that work in a very similar structure. The leaders get fat and the ones they are representing get the crumbs. I only hope that there are others who will wake the F up, like this Sanders guy and the ACORN 8. As much as we need to frustrate Obama's attempt at destroying this country, it is his enablers in the unions and non-profits that are making it happen. Reform the unions and his support will disappear. This kind scurry and scramble when the light comes on. Bring in the sunshine!!!!
I wish more teachers would expose the unions they are forced to belong to. There are good teachers out there but sadly they are too scared to stand up given the union and the Leftist teachers that are in control today.
I'm not sure if the good teachers actually outnumber the bad teachers these days however. The Left has had decades to infiltrate our educational system so it will even be more difficult to get them to stand up if outnumbered. I've had the misfortune to have to deal with many of the bad teachers who freely taught Leftist propaganda and lies to my daughter so I am not fully convinced that there are many good teachers left out there. At least in my school district, I have only found a few.
Makes Home schooling much more attractive. Thank god for the internet to bring a universe of knowledge to our doorstep. The only problem is having to filter out all the crap to get to the good stuff.
Great job by Larry Sand. We need more teachers to stand up for what is right.
are you kidding me, how many more millions of people need to die to prove you right? socialism, facisim, and communism are all equal in the pain they deliver. they lower everybody to the lowest common element. capitalism allows individuals to strive for improvement. and the winners in captialism are everybody. do you think you would rather be "poor" in this country, or any other country? poor people in this country have cell phones, cars, tv's. my day is a refugee from a former communist state, he escaped his homeland for here, now where does he go when we are a ism other than capitalism?
Capitalism hasn't truly been given a chance, either.
I think communism will always fall into the gutter of murder and coercion, because, like a religion, it seeks to change humankind's basic nature. People will always seek a benefit and an advantage. It's just the way we are. We are born with a survivalist mentality.
Capitalism does take into account human nature. Regrettably, after our noble founding document was signed and became our Primary Law, people immediately started finding ways to circumvent it. Dear Leader himself has said that, unfortunately, the Constitution prohibits many desirable (to Dear Leader) governmental actions.
Yeh but when they hit the voting booth they vote their wallot!
I think you need to read again what I said because you obviously mistook it for a defense of communism which is it not. I merely asked a question about its corruption. I clearly said it does not work, I then said that if Obama succeeds in killing capitalism in this country the opponents will be able to say that it did not work just as we say that communism has not worked.
You are 100% correct, two things can keep capitalism from working, we have not had true capitalism, there is a lot of gvt control in the system we have, so we cannot call it true capitalism. And there is the length of time that we have had so far. Not long enough, should it be curtailed now (even in its diluted form) we will never know.
The survival instinct you speak of is what keep communist countries upright for a while because people are afraid of losing their lives and therefore accept whatever the gvt dishes out. I pray this will not happen to us.
I do know one thing in spite of many lost freedoms since the founding fathers we still enjoy more than in any other country I have ever lived in. Let hope we can keep what is remaining, God willing we might come out stronger because so many of us are intent on cleaning up the political pool.
Thank you for the good and thoughtful words. I am all for cleaning up this monstrous mess, and, to that end, I've become active in Republican politics.
I appreciate you realizing I wasn't attacking you or your position, but was just trying to add to the discussion. Thank you again.
you need to get active in conservative politics, or possibly even liberitarian politics, enough with the squishy rino's
The thing is, they are involved with things that have nothing to do with teachers or the teachers union. The only thing they should have been involved in is the tenure ballot, and possibly the taxes ballot (if it was truly about school funding). That is the problem with these special interests – and most unions are nothing more than that anymore – where they think they should have an opinion on everything. Keep to your knitting.
No RINOs for me. My intent in Republican politics is to try to shift the party rightward.
I love what's happenening in NY House District 23. We don't need liberal or moderate Republicans. We need conservatives only. The others need to switch parties. If I wanted a stupid liberal, I could've just voted Dim.
Look at John McCain! The Republicans need to learn a lesson. If they can't it's not my fault. I'm cutting them no more slack.
If you want to get really fired up about rotten union leadership read the book BETRAYED by Linda Chavez
Ah, I see you have had your "Communism has just never been implemented properly!" moment. Likewise we have never properly transplanted a human head onto the body of a dog, but what the heck, we just need to keep trying until we find the correct implementation, right?
Forget politics, forget arguing how communism is against human nature. Argue it is against nature, period. Ask them to cite an example where true communism is found in nature, out in the wild. You may cite Evolution. Nature is built on individual competition, and groups succeeding only by decimating other groups. Trees even compete against each other for resources. Only within hive societies like with ants and bees do we find the level of cooperation that communism requires, where the vast majority slave away and die for the benefit of a few privileged elite. Which, as can be clearly seen, is the natural form that communism assumes when it is implemented.
True communism is against Nature. It shall never be "implemented properly" since it can only assume the form that Nature will allow it to have.
