Obama’s Scheme to Gut the Coast Guard
by Ken BlackwellWe should all know by now that the Obama administration’s plan to spend up to $200 million on civilian trials for terrorists is dangerous. It’s also wasteful. Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, is a site perfectly suited to such trials—and detentions. If not there, then Adak, in the middle of the Aleutians would do just fine.
The Washington Post shows us why that $200 million is also a waste of money. The U.S. Coast Guard should play an important role in our homeland security. After all, that was the stated reason for moving the Coast Guard out of the U.S. Transportation Department and into the newly created Department of Homeland Security.
Liberals are forever going on about “first responders.” Well, the Coast Guard should certainly be considered first among the first responders. Yet, the Coast Guard has come on hard times. The Post recently reported that of 12 major cutters assigned to Haitian relief earlier this year, ten of them broke down. Three were forced to limp back into port.
The Obama administration plans to cut 1,100 active duty personnel from the Coast Guard, the smallest of our military services. Funds for port security—our first line of defense—will be cut by $100 million.
Even Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) calls the cuts in the Coast Guard’s budget “penny-wise and pound foolish.”
Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) is the ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee. Because of the administration’s cuts to the Coast Guard budget, their cutters will not be able to keep pace with the Navy in important combined missions. The average age of a Navy warship is 14 years, while that of a Coast Guard vessel is 41 years. New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans will now be less secure, Rogers charged.
Meanwhile, the Mexican drug war is heating up. Last weekend, two U.S. consular officials were murdered. Congressman Rogers noted that it was foolish to spend money on unnecessary civilian trials for terrorists and for increasing the DHS bureaucracy in Washington, D.C.
The incoming Commandant of the Coast Guard, Admiral Robert Papp, has said he would have to consider cutting homeland security training and operations. This is tantamount to announcing to the terrorists “the coast is clear.”
We have an administration that is grossly wasting money. They have doled out hundreds of millions in failed “stimulus” funds. Many of these projects have been shown to be going to ZIP codes and congressional districts that do not exist.
This administration is even spending $900 million on the Palestinians, people who name public squares and schools after suicide bombers. But when it comes to basic homeland security, they are cutting.
Hearing stories about cutting cutters, and ships breaking down for lack of funds for proper maintenance, we cannot help but think of the infamous “hollowed out” military of the days of Jimmy Carter. But why is President Obama still following in Carter’s footsteps? He already has his Nobel Peace Prize!

Nothing. For all you liberals and all your outrage over the response to Hurricane Katrina, it would do you well to remember that the US Coast Guard performed magnificently rescuing stranded people in New Orleans. They were the heroes of the day, and all other branches of our military reinforced them with additional aircraft, under the USCG's command. They deserve new hardware and personnel to do the job they signed up to do, which is save lives at sea and secure the ports and waterways of America. They are all heroes, and you are a schmuck.

The Coast Guard has always been one of the most respected and honored organization serving our country.
Their position in protecting our shores and assisting citizens in distress cannot be replaced by our other branches of service, and even those whose who might be classified as anti-military respect the contributions of the Coast Guard to our well being.
This cut to the U.S. Coast Guard could probably be covered if Obama just cut his jaunts on Air Force One in half.

Article 1, Section 8 grants Congress that authority to "provide and maintain a Navy."
The Coast Guard traces their history back to 4 August 1790, when the first Congress authorized the construction of ten vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws and to prevent smuggling.
The service received its present name in 1915 under an act of Congress when the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the Life-Saving Service. The nation then had a single maritime service dedicated to saving life at sea and enforcing the nation's maritime laws. The Coast Guard began to maintain the country's aids to maritime navigation, including operating the nation's lighthouses, when President Franklin Roosevelt ordered the transfer of the Lighthouse Service to the Coast Guard in 1939. In 1946 Congress permanently transferred the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation to the Coast Guard, thereby placing merchant marine licensing and merchant vessel safety under Coast Guard purview.
Janet Napolitano had her hands in this. At a earlier hearing, Olympia Snowe was stunned to hear about the cuts.
When asked by ranking minority leader Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) why the DHS budget spends money on securing the trials of terrorists in the U.S. while cutting funding for U.S. Coast Guard, Napolitano defended the Obama administration’s stance on the matter.
“Decommissioning part of the Coast Guard’s 13th elite maritime security safety teams that protect waterfront cities makes absolutely no sense given the threats to our ports,” said Collins, adding that she believed the Senate would not fund security for terror trials in the U.S.

An internal memo from Vice Admiral Robert J. Papp Jr., Obama’s nominee to become Coast Guard commandant, says that starting in 2012, he would slash funding for programs in the agency’s homeland security plan, including patrols and training exercises.
In the memo, Papp said he wants to eliminate teams that are trained to respond to and prevent terror attacks. These teams also train other Coast Guard forces on counterterrorism operations.
The memo, marked “sensitive — for internal Coast Guard use only,” was obtained by The Associated Press.
He also calls for cuts to the Coast Guard’s largest homeland security operation, which patrols critical infrastructure and other sensitive security structures on or near waterways. And he would decrease the number of specialized units stationed in key coastal areas where an attack could be devastating.
Obama has already proposed closing five of the 12 specialized units in 2011.

I used to have home security. Can't afford it now. I sold my boat. I put my jeep on blocks and put the registration on hold. I parked my truck and drive the foreign car with good gas mileage. I buy more at Costco and watch the sales at Frys. I quit eating out. I don't send mail and pay all bills online or by phone. This is what I am having to do to make ends meet.
What is the Country doing? Bailed out nearly everyone. A stimulus bill laden with pork. Spent some more money, then some more money. Voted down a bill that would keep pet spending projects out of legislation for two years. Standing ready to vote in health care that will start the strangle hold and then finish us off with some BS energy bill.
The US is bleeding so badly that there may not be a bandage big enough to fix it and only now are we waking up to what we have sown? Our grandparents, parents and ourselves have no one to blame. We did it. Not Obama.

Are we witnessing the intentional destruction of our nation? If you look at the individual policies of this administration and the democratic congress, a less ominous explanation may be offered for each. Taken as a whole, Occam's Razor would lead to the conclusion that it may have to be true. Across the entire spectrum of domestic and foreign policy, the legacy of more that 200 years of our history is being pissed away. If we do not stop it and soon, it will not end well.
