The Left Goes to War Against Science, Surrenders on Terror
by Ken BlackwellTwo ongoing trends I chronicled during 2009 highlight an ironic situation: Leftists remain tough on their domestic political opponents, while lax when it comes to our real common enemies.
As we recently saw with the Christmas airplane-bombing attempt, leftists seem bent on treating terrorists with kid gloves, insisting they receive rights normally reserved for U.S. citizens (even when this means failing to extract timely information that might save lives).
Conversely, leftists play “hardball” when their opponents are not terrorists or criminals, but instead, American businesses and industries. One such example is the left’s battle against Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical used for more than a half century to make plastics more durable.
Though clearly less consequential than the war on terror, the Left’s war on BPA serves as a microcosm of the larger attempt to use “junk science” and litigation to redistribute wealth from job-producing American industries into the hands of trial lawyers and liberal special interest groups.
In this regard, the Left’s attempts are reminiscent of their past battle against the insecticide DDT. In the 1960s, many developing nation’s had nearly wiped out malaria, but it came back after DDT was banned. It did not matter that DDT was harmless to humans – and actually saved lives — the Left attacked it, ultimately causing 50 million preventable deaths.
Despite the fact that BPA has consistently been proven by the FDA to be harmless to humans — and despite the fact that the FDA is about to release a new study on the chemical in a few weeks — several media outlets (most notably the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the LA Times) have called on the FDA to rule that the chemical is dangerous — before the new study comes out. Talk about pre-judging a case…
Let me stress that BPA has consistently been proven to be harmless in humans. What is more, as I’ve previously noted, liberal special interests have a clear financial stake in attacking the chemical. Lastly, it is clear that numerous businesses which produce plastics ranging from sporting equipment to shatterproof water bottles, to eyeglass lenses, to CDs stand to lose significant amounts of money, possibly causing them to layoff employees in places such as my home state of Ohio, if BPA is banned.
To be sure, if the new FDA study fairly concludes the chemical is unsafe for humans (a conclusion that would contradict numerous prior studies), I would obviously agree that these products should be pulled. But that is precisely why this premature interference is so pernicious. Now that the jury has effectively been tampered with, what are the odds that the new study will, in fact, be accepted as fair? In fact, there is a very real danger we may be allowing media groups to establish science policy, without the benefit of science.
Leftists would be the first to cry foul if a criminal were presumed guilty, and they would object to the sort of “double jeopardy” which causes a product to defend itself indefinitely (or, until proven guilty). Yet, they seem to have no problem when the target is an American industry, not a terrorist or criminal. After all, a 2009 FDA study concluded BPA was safe. Apparently, that wasn’t the “right” conclusion. …If only leftists were as tough on terrorists as they are on American businesses.

The EPA ruled in 1972 that DDT was dangerous, despite all the science saying it wasn't. Now after 35 years of trying WHO to prove it was dangersous, ruled in 2006 DDT was harmless — The lefties went nuts because their god of lies Rachael Carson has been defamed for her book of lies "Silent Spring". The results, over 35 million African children have needlessly died of malaria because of a hoax.

This contrived controversy is a perfect illustration of the corrosive "Precautionary Principle" where any substance must be proved not to cause harm. It fails to take into account that it is the dose that makes the poison, so often the Green fascists must whip up some nonfalsifiable mumbo-jumbo e.g. that even one molecule of BPA will throw off a persons endocrine system. Of couse the trial lawyers will see such campaigns as mana from Heaven.
Why should we continue to pay taxes to people who spread lies about everything, including us?

You comments on DDT are probably wrong in that DDT is a big time poison for many animals if not man. In particular the Bald Eagle, which is back thanks to the DDT ban. Also Mosquitos develop resistance to DDT so its not a cure all. Also the numbers of Maalaria deaths is way exagerated. Seriously all you outdoorsmen, do you want raptors, fish, crayfish etc. to dies becuase of DDT? No not directly harmful to man, but harmful to what man owns.
That said, its a good example of good science not being accepted becuase of bad sicence, like climate science. With all the climate science lies, who is going to believe good science when they see it. I agree that the BPA thing is total BS and it makes the same point.

1) I am personally not clear on the science vis- raptors,crayfish et.c., but I do recall that as having been the reason I was taught that it was bad, not because of effects on humans.

Malaria rates are lower now than they were at the apex of DDT use. In Africa especially, nations using Rachel Carson's proposed methods of fighting the mosquitoes are winning the war. Malaria did not come back after DDT was banned in the U.S. — Africa is a long way from the U.S., and mosquitoes don't commute — but instead there was a rise when the malaria parasites themselves developed resistance to the drugs used to treat the disease.
DDT use was slowed a lot in Africa after mosquitoes became resistant or immune to the stuff. When the mosquitoes get immune, more DDT only shrinks the testes and swells the mammaries on little boys, kills all the beneficial insects, spiders and fish, and costs a lot of money. Who would spray it then?
EPA ruled in 1972 that DDT was a hazard in the wild, based on the mountain of evidence that showed it to be a hazard in the wild — a judgment confirmed in two separate federal courts later, and by the National Academy of Sciences who called DDT one of the most important chemicals ever invented, but too dangerous to keep around. No one with half a brain has ever called DDT "harmless."
WHO did not claim that DDT is harmless in 2005. WHO said DDT could be used safely in extremely small amounts. They've backed off of that stand.
Rachel Carson lied? Not about DDT. Nothing in Silent Spring has ever been contradicted by serious research.

How could she ? She was not a Geologist , Scientist , Biologist or Chemist nor had Carbon reading taken place like we have now .

I hadn't heard that BPA isn't the bad character it has been portrayed to be. I am fairly skeptical when it comes to such things. However, after our toddler daughter sprouted a breast bud that just wouldn't go away for well over a year, I read a small blurb online about plastics mimicking hormones. Out of ideas, we ditched all of her sippy cups and other plastic tableware and had her just use our glass and ceramic items. The breast bud completely disappeared within 1-2 weeks, so I assumed we had hit on the cause. Does anyone know if the connection has indeed been proven false? Our younger daughter is about to start using tableware, and I always recommend getting rid of plastic when friends have children that present with a breast bud (which seems to have become quite common). Thanks, I'd hate to be passing along false information!
Bald eagles, and other raptors, were killed by farmers with shotguns from the twenties to the fifties. With eco-awareness, they were already recovering when the Priestess Carson wrote her book of lies. She had no scientific education, and made emotional assertions.
Extensive lab and field research has shown, even before the EPA’s unscientific political ruling, that neither DDT nor any of its biological breakdown derivatives had negative impact on birds or their eggs (even considering long term consumption of [unharmed but DDT-exposed] fish.)

I would actually agree that "products" are not immune from double jeopardy. However, since it doesn't make sense to allow a company to be constantly sued over the same product, there would have to be an impartial, dare I say it? government organization that is constantly monitoring the safety of non-consumption products. Surely, something like this must already exist? I don't know, because I'm a dweeb.

Can you please show me references to any scientific studies that prove DDT is harmful to beast, man or birds? I am serious. I have searched and searched and found the best science during the EPA trials, in 1971. All other studies I have read since, use terms like "could be linked," or "may be" or "could." All I have found is innuendo, passing itself off as science.
