Senator J. Wellington Wimpy’s Health Care Bill
by Ken BlackwellPollsters like to say their surveys are like a snapshot, limited to the time and the picture frame in which they are taken. What we are seeing in polling on the takeover of health care by the federal government is a consistent opposition by the American people. No major poll shows the people supporting the House or Senate bill.

The poll most often cited by conservative talk show hosts is that of CNN/Opinion Research. This is the poll that shows the widest gap between those in favor and those opposed—25 points. Rasmussen reports a milder ratio of 16% between those opposed and those in favor. Gallup shows it a near-tossup: 46% in favor, 48% opposed.
What all these polls fail to show, however, is intensity. Intensity in politics is everything.
Those who know the most, who tell pollsters they are following the debate most closely—especially seniors—tend to be most opposed.
Younger people’s ranks include millions who are uninsured. They will be forced to become insured if these bills pass. And their relatively good health makes them cash cows waiting to be milked by the federal government. They are paying less attention to the debate. That’s because they pay less attention to all political debates. That may end soon.
Senate liberals, like Harry Reid, like to compare this health care debate to those other great debates—like ending slavery in the 1860s, like Civil Rights in the 1960s. There are some problems with those historical analogies, however.
Yes, it is true that if President Lincoln had submitted his Emancipation Proclamation to a popular referendum of the American people when he issued it in 1863, it might well have been rejected. But events on the battlefield, especially the bravery of black troops at Fort Wagner, literally revolutionized the views of Union soldiers and their families back home.
On Civil Rights, Southerners white as well as black, quickly came to view the passage of the 1964 act as “an idea whose time has come.” For the rest of the country, support among the majority was always strong.
What we have here is a major piece of legislation about which the most informed and the most attentive have formed strong, negative impressions. They are the majority and they feel it. They reject these bills and they are frustrated that Congress seems not to care.
Perhaps the worst thing that could happen to the Democratic Majority is for these deeply flawed bills to pass. The only way Capitol Hill managers have been able to achieve anything like deficit neutrality is through the transparent maneuver of taxing now for services four years off. Are they serious?
This is just another version of the slogan of J. Wellington Wimpy, the great pal of Popeye the Sailor Man. Older readers will remember Wimpy saying: “I would surely pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” Was he Senator J. Wellington Wimpy? I would surely give you health care in `14 for your tax revenues today. Hold the mustard!

The tsunami against these bastards has started. It may be slow gaining momentum but once the final Senate version is made public…all hell will break loose. The House may not accept its version with the Senate then pulling back. It's FAR from over. You young people had better wake up….start watching your disposable income tank with "taxation without representation". You are about to get smacked with a dose of American history !
Is the mandate to purchase insurance to take effect immediately or in later years if this thing passes? I am praying for immediately – all these kids who have no idea who Dick Cheney, Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi are who voted for Obama are going to get an education.
I will have no sympathy.

strange thing is too the congress men/women are just as fat as Wimpy, and just like Wimpy they can't get enough so I guess we have to make sure that we put them on that ship and make sure they can't get any more. And then we won't owe any more money for the Bills they pass.
I have never heard of such an absurd bill!! Pay now …get no service for 5 years????? That's like paying for a car now and not being able to take ownership for 5 years!! Who in their right mind would go along with such bu!!sh!t??? We have to throw the trash out of Washington NOW…before they impose stricter laws that no on can withstand without going to jail!!!
People are as angry as I have ever seen, myself included.
Front loading this bill to make it "appear" budget neutral is an insult to the American people. Does Harry Reid think the American people are that blind. Stop with the budget gimmicks. At least the American people will have 4 years to elect new congressional members and stop this socialist scheme before it gets started. Do you remember the surprise on Dan Rather's face in 1994 during the Republican sweep of both congressional chambers?….It's coming again in 2010 and 2012. It will be a sweep of different proportions this time with new members who stand by our Constitution. It won't make any difference wheather they are Republicans, Democrats or Tea Party candidates……they will be conservatives who honor our freedom. Get ready for the movement! I can't wait.
Older people in this country (like me) understand that cost projections now mean nothing. The informed public recognizes this bill for what it is, a power grab that will strip personal liberty from self-starting Americans. We also realize that Obamacare has a built-in danger….rationed care.
This bill has been the goal of the progressives since FDR. They want to make history and they will. It will be historic indeed if this country can unite at the grassroots level and replace enough enough of these nitwit lemmings in 2010 to repeal this UnAmerican socialist garbage.
This bill will largely be repealed by the new GOP majority, what a waste of time

Magic is the art of distraction, the democrats seem to do all legislation while the people aer distracted either by holidays, weekends, late nights…they should be called the magicians
I can't picture thepeople of Nebraska being upset now, since they are excluded from costs….The entire ObamaCare pkg is un-constitutional, and the Nebraska exclusion is Un-Constitutional!.
Which is a part of why I don't get Nelson's sell-out. Even if the rest of the monstrosity stays, does he really think the Nebraska exemption will never be repealed? And much as I hope you are right, it will take veto-proof majorities. That's a lot to hope for.
They (Democrats) have sealed their own fate. There is going to be hell to pay.
what is this constitution of which you speak, obviously some work of fiction. our nobel senators are too busy to read the bills before them much less some fairy tale called"constitution" you probably also believe in freedom and personal responsibility. poor misguided soul.

I agree.. i heard a great quote that fits very well…
"Armatures built the Ark,
Experts built the Titanic"
Time for some fresh, conservative thinkers in Washington!
"Consistent opposition by the American people" – exactly! So why is BO ramrodding it through (along with those in agreement with him)? There's only one answer and that is because of the agenda and philosophy of these people. Will voting the creeps out in 2010 and 2012 be enough to put the brakes on and reverse some of the damage? Only time will tell.
Gooop.com is committed to throwing out all the currupt crooks in Congress.
"They will be forced to become insured if these bills pass. And their relatively good health makes them cash cows waiting to be milked by the federal government"
And who is entrusted with "enforcement" of this bill? The IRS?
The IRS doesn't have the manpower. So what will the IRS have to do? Outsource. So just like the parking ticket business, will we see enforcement delegated to the private sector?
Outsource? Isn't that a DNC code word for new union labor contracts? And who will provide the necessary oversight, checks and balances of the methods of enforcement? And who will protect Americans from over-zealous union enforcement officers?
Big Government? What up!
The Republican party needs to embrace the conservatism represented by the Tea Party constituents and unite all conservatives against this liberal..far left wing administration… We cannot allow conservatism to be split between existing Republican views and the more conservative Tea Party views..to do so will only serve to ensure Democratic victories in 2010….i.e. a "third" party would be disastrous for conservatism…
With this Senate, in control of the Democrat/Socialist Party, The Nation doesn't need enemies. What few understand is; The Democrat/Socialist Party is the party of MASS MURDER, having supported the results of The Warren Court since it's decision to approve abortion, which is included in this "Sick Care" legislation. The Warren Court, after Mao, is responsible for the mass slaughter of Humanity at, just in the US alone, 50,000,000,. Fifty Million. The Democratic/Socialist Party, by extension is the party of Mass Murder.
If you defend the right of life in any way whether from direct aggression on adults or children or any "Born" entity you must defend the right of life at it's inception. To do so is illogical, irrational and a crime against Humanity. Abortion is the supreme example of human selfishness.
Ken Blackwell, you are totally correct in pointing out that the Civil Rights Act bears no resemblance to this monstrosity of so-called HealthCare Reform the Democrat gangsters are pushing through.
Thank you for the excellent write-up. Great content, well executed!
I hope everyone shows their anger by voting each and every incumbent out regardless of party affiliation. Let's teach Washington a lesson, that they work for us. Continuing to ignore the majority of the country just to pass what they feel is history making legislation regardless of unintended consequences. What happened the last time a large group felt powerless, I think the phrase "taxation without representation" comes to mind. This time let's have a bloodless coup and vote each and every one of the ***tards out. Think that may wake them up?
I've been giving thought lately to our Representative 'process' in the U.S. Perhaps the days should be in our 'rear view mirror' in which after voting someone in to 'represent' us in our Federal Government, that we watch them pack their bags and move to D.C. With all the technology available, perhaps the need to move to DC no longer exists. They can set up offices right in their DISTRICTS, where they have to face the folks they represent! They can have 'Webinars', and vote electronically. No more lobbists. No more party meetings behind closed doors. Maybe we'll let them all get together in DC a couple of times a year, but that's IT! AND all this should come with Term Limits, for SURE!! Wouldn't that cut down on some of this corruption and back room deals?? See continuation..
Let's begin to re-think this whole process! They MOVE there because that's the way it's ALWAYS been done. Maybe it's time to CHANGE that!! And just look at how 'GREEN' that would be? Surely THAT will get the New Washington on board! LOL!!! What is going on in DC is so wrong!! Let's make them stay home. Now that's a CHANGE I can get behind!! I'm just sayin'…..
I am tired of having polls tossed in my face. No matter what poll you look at the people say NO. Why is that so hard to understand?
The Dems have given us a Christmas present we will never be allowed to forget.
Its not a new car, a new job or even a pet.
It is however, the health care vote that liberals will soon regret.
One by one they will fall into the election abyss, and that, is a sure bet.
The key is to focus on the near term with our eye on the long term. 2010 is imprtant. So is 2110. No progressives in government anywhere – ever.
O The republicans/Tea Partiers must focus on the 10 th amendment and begin rolling this back – Dept of ed – GONE, NPR – GONE, EPA Gone.
This is our objective – DEFANG the beast. Petty Pork we can handle – theft of liberty we must prevent. Take over your local Repub party and stop the progressives. Buy guns and ammo.
Next – END withholding. No more taking our money before we get it….
I just got off the phone with my English aunt (she lives in England). She was diagnosed with bowel cancer. She also had a tumor in her liver. To make a long gut-wrenching story short–after one round of a particular variation of chemotherapy, the doctor, after seeing little effect on the size of the tumor, told her rather coldly, there was nothing else he could do, and that she should go home and try to enjoy the remaining few months she has left to live.
I could not imagine an American doctor saying such a thing. Most American doctors would suggest further treatments–even experimental ones in their sincere efforts to do all they can to save the life of a patient.
God help us all when national health care comes to fruition
Yougot it! Just at a party last night. talking with some Westside Liberals. They voted for Obama, but a re now saying that they and all their freinds are "so over Obama". They are mad about lack of transparency, deficits and view Obama as pawn for big corporate interests ( they do not undestand he is merely co-opting the means of production). So if election can be nationalized Dems may be in real trouble. Their base (all except the Marxist wing) are disillusioned and soon will be apathetic. GOP needs a HUGE victory, however, to repeal all this crap. Precious little of the FDR New Deal was repealed. I guess that is the "audacity of hope" speaking……
That is the problem. The New Deal was not repealed. GOP needs huge majorities and balls. Right now, Sarah Palin has bigger balls than any of them – but keep an eye on Col. Allen West in Fla.
These are the most corrupt and most arrogant politicians I've seen in my 52 years of life. They refuse to represent the American people. If I read David Axelrod say we need to do this for the "American people" once more I am going to vomit. States will go bankrupt, people will have no more disposable income as the price of health care skyrockets. These rotten Marxists will finally get their wish for us all to live in poverty and with horrible health care to boot. I can only hope that the tide turns and there are enough votes next election to reverse this insanity.
That to me is just another distraction to keep us deaf, dumb and blind
this is news folk never speak of in mainstream media
http://rawdawgb.blogspot.com/2009/12/y-i-dont-wat...
I agree!! I think they BOTH need to run on the same ticket!! Imagine that…a white woman and a black man!! Sounds like the 'right 'thing to do!!
We DO have computers in this day and age!! They could all conference on their lap tops!!! Sounds like a good solution to a very bad problem!!
i agree we need no third party like ron ragan said we need to take back the republican pary lile getting rid of the likes of snowe graham ect no third party
agreed amaerica has mudered more people then hitler under the guise of pro choice
That is a great idea. We need to start floating that idea on net and it might catch fire.
Knowing these slimy bastards, it will probably be a case where they won't start having to pay their share until 2014. Keep them voting dem and off guard until it's really too late.
Please go and sign the petition to help get Nelson to reverse against Harry Reid…over 18K right now. Huckabee is in Nebraska and will be presenting and talking with the senator. Then email all your family and contacts and have them sign too. Doesn't matter that we aren't from Nebraska…we ARE the people.

Government works with the consent of the governed, …we’ll lets withdraw our consent. Sixty percent of the American people do not want this monstrosity (deathcare). Dig our heels in, resist in every way, we are still free Americans, exercise that freedom.
No one in DC should be trusted. They're all liars. Both GOP and Dems. I hope we get a fresh start in 2010 with new people who belongs to the Tea Parties.
It will be even more important to take back the House and Senate so no leftist Supreme Court justice can be confirmed. This should certainly be declared unconstitutional.
The Dems are counting on the Voters to forget how they crammed this
garbage down our throats, and how stupid they think the American
people are. The ones that don't have to face the 2010 elections seem
to be the cockiest.
What a great idea! You are thinking outside the box and that's exactly what all of us should be doing. I only had the opportunity to visit D.C. once during this whole process and then didn't get to see my Representative. They really need to see their constituents face to face and hopefully listen to our concerns. I like the idea of saving energy, too. Wasn't it amazing how much energy was used getting back and forth to Copenhagen? That whole event could have been handled via a 'Webinar'. Your idea is fantastic and I would love to see it come to fruition.
Gov Health Care appears to be a done deal. The only saying grace is that tens of millions of us who where fairly apathetic are now fully engaged. I sense a sea change coming in November.
GO TO PERSON
Every family should have a “go to” person who can give answers to political and issue concerns, as suggested by Rush Limbaugh. Learning how means starting at the roots, the beginnings and differences between two sides of the same coin, which is all there is. One side is long established, where the few rule the many, irrespective of their labels. The other side is the newest, that of individual freedom and limited government. Why do many follow each side, and why the conflict between them? What side do current issues come from, such as health care, cap and trade as well as amnesty for illegal immigrants? What side of the coin most impacts the lives of your family, to whom you provide the answers? Call up claysamerica.com for the roots of both sides and improve your understanding of the issues so you have the answers. Claysamerica.com
All those Obama voters will be right with ya when they find that out too.
They are probably headin out next week for a little nip and tuck cause Obama got it done.
The tax increases will start right away, on top of the left to die tax cuts.
I'm not sure if the young will have to pay health insurance right away, but I suspect so.
It's four years, but who knows what fiddle Obama and both Houses will add to it ?
The GOPers are fighting this, tooth and nail ! Whilst some of them need to go, you are being childish and a political naif, calling out to get rid of every single one.
The IRS just added on 100s of jobs/employees.

AP – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., left, talks with staff during a photo-op in his office prior …
By ERICA WERNER, Associated Press Writer – 18 mins ago
WASHINGTON – A crucial, middle-of-the-night test vote behind them, Senate Democrats on Monday remained on track to pass historic health care legislation by Christmas, preparing for more votes at odd hours to overcome unanimous Republican opposition.
All 58 Democrats and the Senate's two independents held together early Monday to advance President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, which would extend coverage to 30 million people now uninsured and try to slow ruinous increases in medical costs. The 60-40 margin was exactly the number needed to shut down a threatened GOP filibuster. The next vote is expected around 7:20 a.m. EST Tuesday.
Obama called the vote "a big victory for the American people," and challenged critics who say it will increase, not reduce costs.
"For all those who are continually carping about how this is somehow a big spending government bill, this cuts our deficit by $132 billion the first 10 years, and by over a trillion in the second," Obama said. "That argument that opponents are making against this bill does not hold water."
Monday's Senate vote came shortly after 1 a.m. with the nation's capital blanketed in snow, the unusual timing made necessary in order to get to a final vote by Christmas Eve presuming Republicans stretch out the debate as much as the rules allow.
The outcome was preordained after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., wrangled his fractious caucus into line over the course of the past several months, culminating in a frenzy of last-minute deals and concessions to win over the final holdouts, independent Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and conservative Democrat Ben Nelson of Nebraska.
Obama's oft-stated goal of a bipartisan health bill was not met, despite the president's extensive courtship of moderate Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine, the only Republican to support the bill in committee. Obama called Snowe to the White House for lengthy in-person meetings both before he left for climate talks in Copenhagen and after his return on Saturday. In the end Snowe said she was "extremely disappointed" in what she called a rushed process that left scant time for her to review, much less amend, the bill.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., criticized the side deals needed to win key votes, calling them "Bernie Madoff gimmicks." McCain, appearing Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America," complained that "Republicans were never brought in to the negotiations."
Still, the vote represented a major victory for Democrats and Obama, who's now clearly in reach of passing legislation extending health coverage to nearly all Americans, a goal that's eluded a succession of past presidents. The legislation would make health insurance mandatory for the first time for nearly everyone, provide subsidies to help lower-income people buy it, and induce employers to provide it with tax breaks for small businesses and penalties for larger ones.
Two more procedural votes await the Senate, each requiring 60 votes, the first of these set for Tuesday morning. Final passage of the bill requires a simple majority, and that vote could come as late as 7 p.m. on Thursday, Christmas Eve.
The Senate measure still must be harmonized with the health care bill passed by the House in November before final legislation can be sent to Obama's desk.
There are significant differences between the two measures, including stricter abortion language in the House bill, a new government-run insurance plan in the House bill that's missing from the Senate version, and a tax on high-value insurance plans embraced by the Senate but strongly opposed by many House Democrats.
After Monday's vote a number of Senate Democrats warned that the legislation could not change much and expect to maintain support from 60 senators. House Democrats are sure to want to alter it but may have to swallow it mostly whole.
"It took a lot of work to bring this 60 together and this 60 is delicately balanced," Lieberman said.
Republicans are determined to give Democrats no help, eager to deny Obama a political victory and speculating openly that the health care issue will hurt Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections.
"There will be a day of accounting," warned John Cornyn, R-Texas, accusing Democrats of pushing a health overhaul opposed by the public. "Perhaps the first day of accounting will be Election Day 2010."
At their core the bills passed by the House and pending in the Senate are similar. Each costs around $1 trillion over 10 years and is paid for by a combination of tax and fee increases and cuts in projected Medicare spending. Each sets up new insurance marketplaces called exchanges where uninsured or self-employed people and small businesses can compare prices and plans designed to meet some basic requirements. Unpopular insurance practices such as denying people coverage based on pre-existing conditions would be banned, and young adults could retain coverage longer under their parents' insurance plans — through age 25 in the Senate bill and through age 26 in the House version.
Reid cut numerous last-minute deals to get the votes he needed and powerful Democrats also inserted home-state provisions in a 383-page package of amendments Reid filed this weekend to the 2,074-page bill.

Why do Republicans hate America so much? You should back your president in these troubled times. I love my country and that is why I want Cheney prosecuted for war crimes.
