Michelle Obama, Liberal Government and Obesity
by Kyle-Anne ShiverFirst Lady, Michelle Obama, has decided to take a whack at solving the American obesity epidemic. Splendid.

She should start by looking at one of the biggest roots of the problem: liberal government and its most favorite project of the past 40 years, the welfare state.
There is a surprising, yet undeniable, correlation between skyrocketing obesity rates and race and socioeconomic status. The group most disproportionately affected by obesity is poor black women.
A survey of the available research on obesity was conducted in 2004 by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Center for Human Nutrition. Among the results:
- The U.S. obesity prevalence increased from 13 percent to 32 percent between the 1960s and 2004.
- Women 20–34 years old had the fastest increase rate of obesity and overweight.
- 80% of black women aged 40 years or over are overweight; 50% are obese.
- Less educated people have a higher prevalence of obesity than their counterparts.
- 16% of children and adolescents are overweight and 34% are at risk of becoming overweight in 2003-2004.
- White children and adolescents had the lowest prevalence of overweight and being at risk of overweight compared with their black and Mexican counterparts.
Even holding steady for all other factors, research concludes that poor black women and their children are the most disproportionately affected by skyrocketing obesity rates. The largest single indicator for poverty and, later, dropping out of high school is birth to an unmarried mother. Unmarried women and their children are the largest recipient group of welfare state entitlement programs and also the group most rigidly trapped in failing government schools. In 2007, 72% of all black children born in the USA, were born out of wedlock. You do the math.
There is currently a great amount of research being conducted (most of it taxpayer funded) to determine the causes of obesity in disadvantaged socioeconomic groups and I certainly applaud Michelle Obama for focusing the Nation’s attention on this issue.
One would hope, however, that the first order of business would be a common sense look at how government programs, since the 1960s, mostly pushed by liberal social engineers, may have inadvertently created this problem, or at the very least, heavily contributed to it (no pun intended).
The very first corollary they teach in business school is this: Whenever you solve one problem, you inevitably create other problems.
The object of efficient problem solving, therefore, is to foresee the problems, which will be created by the proposed solution, in order to determine whether the problems created will be worse than the original problem. Only if it can be reasonably determined, in advance, that the solution will produce net improvement all around, is the solution considered a wise business decision.
If only big government bureaucrats were as smart and cautious. If they had looked ahead, we might not be in this mess.
In the 1960s, the prevalence of obesity in the U.S. was 16 percent. By 2004, that rate had increased to thirty-two percent. $14 billion is spent annually on child obesity-related health care costs, American Heart Association president Dr. Tim Gardner said during a recent press conference. Overall, annual obesity-related costs total $117 billion. This is no small problem.
What are the two largest indicators for obesity? Lack of quality education and poverty.
The two largest indicators for poverty are lack of a good education and out-of-wedlock childbirth.
Now, human nature hasn’t changed since the beginning of time and anyone with a single grain of common sense knows that any time a government attempts to alleviate the natural consequences of bad personal choices, then government ends up enabling and encouraging bad choices.
So, what enabling factors have encouraged the rise in obesity among the lowest socioeconomic groups, who are also the most poorly educated?
The liberal welfare state and its coexisting government education system has created a sub-culture of dependent people. A culture of dependence upon others for food, housing, education and medical care has produced an entire class of people for whom the logical consequences of bad personal choices have been largely eradicated through social welfare programs.
In the self-providing household, there is huge incentive to take precautions against obesity.
Hard work requires fit people; non-workers need not worry as much about fitness. Obesity impairs fitness, and therefore, also one’s ability to work. People who must provide for themselves and their children, naturally, take great care to avoid the impediments associated with obesity.
Obese children have more health problems; health problems cost the working family more money. Children’s health problems also interfere with educational progress, stunting their chances later in life to be independent. Working, self-providing families have huge incentives to produce self-sufficient adults, who will not later be a financial drain on aging parents.
No such logical-consequence incentives exist for those willing to become completely dependent upon the largesse of the welfare state.
A family dependent upon others for welfare and medical care hasn’t as much incentive to prevent obesity in its children. This is not rocket science; it’s human nature 101.
Liberal programs in public schools also contribute to the problem.
Since sex education was introduced into our public schools in the 1970s, rather than producing the hoped-for decline in out of wedlock pregnancy and childbirth, these programs have overseen an unprecedented rise in both. Out-of-wedlock childbirth is the largest single indicator for poverty, for both mothers and their children.
Liberal feminists also insisted upon doing away with traditional school programs aimed at preparing young women to raise healthy children. Home economics classes, once required of all American high school girls, taught basic nutrition, meal planning, marketing strategies and healthy food preparation to the people who would be doing the lion’s share of those things for future families – women. Eradicating those programs in an ill-advised quest to “equalize” women has undeniably resulted in generations ill-equipped to provide the basic fundamentals of health to themselves and their children – good nutritional habits. Home economics classes went, but women still prepare the bulk of meals served to children. Result? Women still do the work, but thanks to liberal feminists, no longer are given the tools to do the work well. Rising obesity rates are just the natural consequence of an abundance of food, but no knowledge about how to use this resource to best benefit.
Physical education classes for older children and hard-playing recess for the younger ones, were once (prior to the 1970s) widely recognized for their benefits, not only to physical fitness but also to school discipline and the enhancement of academic success. But once again, a program bearing huge benefit to American school children has been cut in a mis-guided attempt to bolster academic performance. According to a recent CDC survey, only 3.8 percent of elementary schools, 7.9 percent of middle schools and 2.1 percent of high schools provide daily P.E.
Which children are trapped most by public schools, where P.E. is no longer considered budget worthy? Exactly. Poor children, especially those born out of wedlock, keeping them mired in poverty and unable to escape failed public schools. Strenuous physical activity also provides a healthy outlet for excess energy and was always recognized as a benefit to diminishing discipline problems. Discipline problems, of course, now are the plague of public schools. More discipline problems in schools later become crime statistics.
Liberal policies aimed at building self-esteem in children, at the expense of educational standards, have resulted in poorly educated masses.
Liberal policies that put the interests of teacher unions over the quality of education have resulted in all-but-illiterate graduates.
Liberal policies aimed at diluting authority, discipline and dress codes in schools have resulted in less learning opportunities for all.
Liberal policies, which place a higher significance on handing out birth control than on handing out nutrition information, have resulted in more out-of-wedlock births and more obese children.
And the cycle continues.
It’s impossible to track the myriad of destructive results from the liberal government policies of the past 40 years, but one thing is absolutely certain. None of the social/health epidemics of our time, including obesity, are going to improve until liberals begin to rethink the real results of their “good intentions.”
If one wanted to be cynical, one might conclude that liberals — who have supported these destructive programs — hate poor people, most especially poor black women, who have disproportionately borne the brunt of the whole welfare state and its companion, shoddy schools.
As if that hate weren’t enough, liberals hawk abortion to poor black women as the “cure” for all that ails. In essence, liberal programs have created the out-of-wedlock childbirth explosion that, in their eyes, absolutely requires unfettered abortion to stem the tide of dependents. Take away the personal financial consequences of illegitimate birth, and the result is bound to be more illegitimate births. Hence, the liberal welfare state, the feminists’ sexual revolution and abortion are inconvenient handmaids, bound by necessity. Alas, obesity is merely a side issue.
Yet, liberals like Michelle Obama, take a tiny squinting view of the tip of this social iceberg – obesity, hitting hardest at poor black women and their children – and all they can see is a McDonalds menu, greedy, irresponsible agribusiness and a desperate need for more of other people’s money to fix what liberal policies largely created in the first place.
A genuine, hard look in the mirror is just too much to bear for self-congratulating liberals.
Why, it’s enough to make a decent person sick to the stomach.

How much does she weigh?
I watch people in front of me buy groceries. If they are on food stamps, they buy prepared breaded fatty foods. Not much for fruits and vegies. I of course pay for their food stamps.
Welfare has been around for thousands of years. Demosthenes wrote about it in On Organization, and the Pharaohs handed out bread and beer to all the poor (Saddam ran the biggest free food distribution program (mostly bread) in the world in 2002).
Why do you think this millenia old practice should end today? What civilized countries don't have any welfare that you would try to emulate? What U.S. states have no welfare at all? Alaska hands out _cash_ to its residents, a cash handout that Sarah Palin mightily increased.
How much does chubby friend Oprah winfrey weigh? Is her behavior a suggestion for women and eating? My daughter weighs 150 pounds. She tries to gain weight. Of course she tried out for the olympics and the heptathalon. She has never watched Oprah.
Oprah & Michelle- a tub-o-lard and thunder thighs… now that is a pair to draw to…
Mrs. Obama thinks that obesity is harming our national security…That's funny, because I think her husband is harming our national security.
People are responsible for their own welfare. That's how it has always been, and how should always be. It's not the place for the Federal Government to redistribute wealth as a guise to helping the needy. If people need help, there are plenty of community organizations, churches, etc that can provide those services, with out the Fed. Govt. every needing to provide anything. We the people are better at taking care of ourselves than the Govt. will ever be. And if the Obamas were truly serious about the welfare of the people. Then why does B.O's "family" still live in hovels with dirt floors?
Jessia Ennis, current heptathalon champion, is 5'4" and weighs about 125 pounds.
In reality, obviously your daughter doesn't need basic obesity or nutrition advice from anyone. Surely less than 1%, probably less than .1% of American women might ever qualify for an event like the heptathalon.
Do you think people like my Mom, with a perfect credit score, gets angry when people encourage the public to save money and pay their bills on time?
Government cheese is awfully fatty.
At my school in Baltimore, this is what's for breakfast: 0% milk–no fat, but great gobs of high fructose corn syrup for the chocolate and strawberry flavors. Plain or chocolate donut, served with a bag of "elf "graham crackers, or iced honey bun (no graham crackers). Pop-tarts were taken off the menu–too fatty. A bowl of fruit sits on the counter. This is what is referred to as "Fruit is offered". Faculty might buy a piece or two. Rarely will a student take a piece. YOUR tax dollars at work, my friends.
But that's the ironic part, isn't it? During the Great Depression, private charities simply dried up. People wanted to save their own money, and didn't want to help out the poor anymore. Just at the moment it was needed most the groups you want to rely on, churches and community trusts, stopped helping.
This doubled the burden on the (then small) government welfare programs, exacerbating things still further.
Please name for me a single civilized country in the history of the world that had no welfare at all. You claim "[t]hat's how it always has been" but I can't think of a single example that obeys your rule. I think you are just guessing, or making stuff up, I hope you don't mind me expressing my viewpoint.
Yes, bread and circuses have long been a tool for keeping people complacent. But the direct democracy (inherently unstable), and oligarchies you cite are hardly example in favor of welfare.
Shall we revisit other millennia-old practices? Primogenitor? Polygamy? Slavery?
Thats right, Sarah handrd out cash to Alaska residents…NOT WELFARE CHECKS. The cash was a bonus to each resident for the profits realized in the energy sector. Instead of keeping the money and "growing" governement, she shared.
Terrific read. I think of how socialized healthcare will destroy the lives of so many, not just steal $ from those who pay for it. The recipients of "free healthcare" will up their personal risks thinking they have a get out of jail free card.
But its easy being cheesy when you're pork-barrel politicians make sure you can keep your Dole.
This post brought to you by Papa John's new Hawaiian Pizza!
Remember when taking welfare in any form was a personal disgrace to be avoided at all costs? It was a matter of honor and self respect. Today, people tout how well they milk the system and congratulate each other for their prowess in doing so. We've come a looon way, baby….NOT!
Yes, the liberal policies have made it possible. But I think moral decay began the process.
Bingo. Welfare is wealth re-distribution.
Junk in her trunk?
Her butt is about three axe handles wide………..
Iran nuclear weapons are a national security threat. Obesity is just a national embarassment.
I dont mind if those that support this pay from thier own pocketbook and not mine. You like it? You pay for it.
WE should have a box on our W-2s that state all the freebies you wish to pay for. If you support welfare or abortion check the box. I promise the all loving all compassionate left would not want thier money used just everyone one elses.
Welfare is a liberal sponsored career path with guaranteed raises every 9 months. If you breed, you succeed.
Tub-o-lard and Thunder Thighs?
Sounds like a name for a new age Rock Band.
They should hit the road and try to get their act on American Idol.
I have to take a small issue with your statement:
"But the direct democracy (inherently unstable), and oligarchies you cite are hardly example in favor of welfare."
Direct democracy has worked in Switzerland for more than 700 years. The only way that it has worked is the following:
Educated Population
Unfettered Gun Rights
As long as the population has a vested interest in their government, this style of government can work, but only on a small scale.
Of course, welfare policy which encourages the dissolution of the nuclear family doesn't help.
Alaska hands BACK cash to it's residents as part of the Trans-Alaskan pipeline project. It has been going on since the 70's. Every year, Alaskans get this rebate. It is NOT welfare. Reading is more than fundamental. It requires comprehension.
A mind is a terrible thing, huh?
I asked for a single example of any civilized country that didn't have welfare.
FYI, neither Ba'athist Iraq nor Pharonic Egypt were oligarchies, so, you might want to brush up on your vocabulary.
Switzerland does not have a direct democracy in the ancient Greek city-state sense. There's is more of a weakened parliamentary system, wouldn't you say?
Few of the people in Alaska had anything to do with earning the oil money, it is taken from the oil companies and given to the people who did nothing. That is redistribution.
You might get thumbs up, but that doesn't mean you actually made sense.
Nope. I meant what I said. Monarchies and tyrannies are just oligarchies with different sauces.
Please don't be absurd. She's been in the national spotlight for about 2 years.
Even you don't believe America's problem with obesity just started in the last 2 years.
At my kids' school in Boulder, CO area, they have changed the school menu offerings this year to reflect similar viewpoints as Mrs. Obama. No more chocolate or anything higher than 1/2% milk. All organic everything. As much as possible locally grown (CO in the winter not known for growing much except snow). The result: school lunch purchases are down to less than 40% of what they were last year. My kids hate it. So they and most of their friends now pack lunches. The school system is practically begging parents to encourage their kids to buy this "healthy" horrible-tasting stuff.
I packed a PB&J, an orange, some Girl Scout cookies and a chocolate milk today for my kids – and, no, they are not fat. My daughter is 5'3", 12 years and weighs 80 pounds. She could do with some more fatty foods, but is blessed with a great metabolism and gets lots of exercise in cross-country. The schools have lost my money for their lunch program.
Welcome to 1984 (Orwellian style)!!!
This just makes me SICK!!!
Iran doesn't have a) nuclear weapons, b) missiles that could reach America.
Try reading http://www.ArmsControlWonk.com for insight. Search for iran to find posts just on that topic. The blogger is(was?) the head of the Managing the Atom project at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
And, for an arms control scientist, he's pretty cool.
You might get thumbs up, but that doesn't mean you actually made sense.
And you are final arbiter of what makes sense, no doubt.
As I understand it, the theory is that the mineral wealth of the state belongs to its people, and consequently, they all get a cut. That doesn't qualify as wealth re-distribution, IMO, because it was already theirs.
Now, if the fruits of my labor are forcibly taken from me, and given to another, that this very much wealth re-distribution.
A close family member is in the grocery business. Your statement about prepared fatty foods is dead on. Not to mention the ice cream, cookies, chips and other items that not only cost a lot but are simply not a necessary staple to help (isn't that what this is about??) a family and the"children" through a tough time. . Food stamps oooopppps I mean The Snap (ha…. just change the name and use a debit card… we wouldn't want to stigmatize anyone getting free grocery's) program should allow only for basics. Milk, eggs, bread, cereals, flour, veggy's etc…… and Ohhhhhh excuse me…… then I would be depriving them of their 'right to chose" what to eat with my money…..
my bad!!!!
Killing them softly, with compassion. The Great Society made the male head of household obsolete and replaced him with a government check.
This just in from the files of "Liberal Wisdom" aka "DUH"
Only in America do our impoverished suffer from obesity? When people are paid to not work, when they are given homes they do not have to pay for, when they have someone else feed their children, and when they can get their food for free, what is the result?
when is comes to the heaviest cost burden on the health care system, next to old age is obesity. WORD to yo mama!
That just shows that even civilized countries can make a mistake.
Co'mon COW, boy surely ……….YOU, KNOW, the difference between a heifer and a cow.
Joshua Simeon Narins – what are you talking about? No, I don't believe that America's problem w/obesity just started in the last 2 years. I believe that the election of Obama is a threat to national security and linking obesity to that is absurd.
You're right.
I was trying to be diplomatic and tactful.
Of course government policies CAN affect your weight. Anybody remember many fat kids in their schoolroom before forced busing closed down neighborhood schools? Then, there's zoning. If the government forces you to have so much land around your house and denies a small business the opportunity of having its business where it likes, then you are probably going to get into your car to carry on most of your activities. Get the government out of your life and see what happens.
Is Michelle wearing a wig?
I want to see the school cafeteria police, enforcing arugula and alfalfa salads on the kiddies.
So she wants to lecture us on obesity? OK, I'd like to lecture her one what is and what is not appropriate attire for a first lady.
Sort of, I suppose.
Any citizen can petition the government for an amendment to the Constitution. Tthere is a council of 12 "Presidents" in the form of an executive council. It is more of a Federal System with a combination of Direct Democracy. The Executive Council acts as a psuedo-judiciary from what I recall.
You couldn't be more correct.
The men that are left as heads of households have turned into pussified metrosexuals.
this woman couldnt be serious.
all these problems and she champions, WHAT?
isnt she from Chicago with the big GANG-problem? – how 'bout making your mark in a tangible way instead of piggy-backing what parents are doing? who does the First Usurper Lady think she's fooling?
The bottom line is : it's easier to get food stamps, buy junk food and sit in front of the 48" screen all day. What motivation is there to go out and work when the government will give you hundreds of dollars a month in food stamps on top of welfare? Remember the rebates? Best Buy couldn't keep up with all the flat screens walking out the door.
We all know the solution to this problem. I don't need to even say it. As for Moochelle being the spokewoman for obesity, I find it laughable. Every time I see a photo of her thats been through photoshop, I roll my eyes, because all the ones that haven't been altered she weighs in atleast 40 lbs heavier. Maybe more if she wears her artillary ammo belt.
Why doesn't Moochelle donate all the money she spends on the drunken parties at the WH, the flights and vacations and $400 lunches she downs to the poor children of DC with school lunches consisting of fresh veggies etc? Public relations needed a project for her. Wrong one folks. Especially the narrative on national security.
( Hope it snows till June in DC)
What other practices of Saddam should we try? And you state 2002. He did it for just one year??? I'll settle for that. We'll do food stamps for 2010 and Joshys S N will be happy. He just said so!!____And the Pharaohs poor were ummmmm……. slaves. So that would be more like wages. Just a little FYI for ya'
I most certainly don't mind you expressing your view points, this is America and after all, it's your right.
You say that during the Great Depression, private charities dried up. Well, why do you think they dried up? Perhaps it was because we had a Progressive President, who wanted a nanny state long before it was considered cool. Do you honestly think that if people had the money to help, they would? I think it's fair to say that this country has a stellar record in bringing aid to those in need. More so abroad than at home, but we are still the most noblest of nations that are willing to provide support in any manner. With that said, wouldn't it be feasible to assume that if it wasn't during the Great Depression, that the people would be willing to help more, because they had more to give? If the Federal Government would have taken care of the nations business, according to the Constitution, then there most likely would not have been a depression to begin with.
I was on Welfare for a while. It was not fun. You eat all the pasta (or rice, depending on your nationality) and try to save the veggies and meat for the kiddies. For those who follow the rules, Food Stamps last maybe 3 weeks, not the whole month. I had to work 2 jobs in order to make enough to get off of Welfare. I went for 2 years getting about 2-3 hours sleep a day, until I got a job that made things better for me. I would never want to do that again. The worst thing is that you get this creepy feeling that your kids aren't completely yours, but are owned by the government. Anger a doctor (by not agreeing to braces, etc.,) or a teacher(by not agreeing with what they were being taught in school) and they could make a complaint and send social workers to do something that could lead to you losing your kids. I would not condemn a Welfare mother unless I had a good reason, and I would never reccommend going on Welfare unless you really had to. To do it just for the money is madness.
Bubble Butt Michelle and thunder thighs Oprah tripped to Europa to win the Olympics. Talk about turning the athletic board off!!!
They told the world that we aren't into health.
And here I thought the First Wookee was just going to run a Government Fat Farm for Kids.
Never fear…. Hussein will issue an Executive Order requiring rationing on McVisas. One Big Mac a day mandate from the Fascist in Chief.
Hey Cowboy:
you remember Eastwood and Bridges in the film "thunderbolt & Lightfoot" ? oprah & mich can make a new version of that film and call it Thunder-thighs & Lightfoot my ass!" They could use their ample bottoms to break in the walls to get to the money…I would be a riot….heehaw
The poor in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Darfur, Liberia, Congo and Haiti are not obese. Maybe we could use them as a retraining camp and send our obese for a 1 year boot camp. It seems repressive regimes are a wieght loss cure.
Don't forget that her husband sh!t canned the school voucher program for DC
Why don't you go on over to Iran and see how good things are there??? Want me tyo help buy your ticket?? One way of course!!!
Excellent idea, but I guarantee you if you looked at the check marks and knew the political affiliation, none of those marks would be by progressives because they only know how to TAKE and not GIVE!!
"Welfare has been around for thousands of years." and "Why do you think this millenia old practice should end today?"
Think of it this way… substitute the word "crime" for welfare and answer the second part of your statement quoted above. Just because state sponsored welfare has been around so long, it does not make it right.
Iran is about to nuke. Unemployment sits around 10%. The dollar is a quarter. They can't get jack done on HCR and they trot her fat butt out to talk about…… ummmm fat butts?
Yeah, I know. I suppose I should have written the Iranian nuclear program is a national security threat as a) They have a weapons development program. b) Our security interests don't begin at our borders. In turn, I recommend reading, "Showdown with Nuclear Iran" by Michael Evans and Jerome Corsi.
She is the tackiest 'First Lady' ever! NOT a lady, either!
That MooShelle sure is busy. "First Heifer" and "First Gardener".
It's her new hairdo. Probably consts the taxpayer $500 a week to keep it in place. Of course, you could be right about the wig theory.
You must feel very lonely in Boulder. I can't believe there are too many there who share your conservative views. I lived there for a while back in the 80's. too many BMW's and too much toot going up the noses. And for all the granola heads living up the canyon, it was all just a little too progressive for me. Beautiful location though.
On one hand you have Obama attempting to force everyone into being a ward of the state and thereby becoming fat. and on the other hand we have Mrs. O saying we're all fat.
Yeah, I need five regular cooks, guest cooks, 22 people wo watch over me and a garden planted by someone else. And like that donut diet she is on is doing any good.
Get your head out of your overly large ass lady.
While helping out your fellow man can never really be construed as a bad Idea, a free lunch is never cheap. Consider a few simple examples that, while they do not scientifically prove any theories, are still plainly seen in everyday life. (And just a sidenote here, all the cultures that you hold up so high for providing such great welfare to their citizens; how many are still around, and how many ever enjoyed prosperity near that of the US in the pre-massive handout era?)
1.) Which College student typically works harder to earn good grades, the student that has parents that pay everything for them, or the student working two jobs that has a good bit of debt that they are completely responsible for?
2.) Given two options, would you rather; walk to your mailbox once a week to pick up a check, doing whatever you felt like all day, or would you rather work your ass off for forty or so hours, taking shit from a boss you most likely don't respect to get a similar check (all the while realizing that part of your check that you never see ends up in the hands of the guy on the couch that I mentioned earlier)?
Dependence on others for your well being breeds laziness and apathy, period. You ask what cultures ever did not have welfare throughout history. I ask, out of all of those cultures, when did it ever produce tangible results other than more poverty?
"You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
The government cannot… give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation..
You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."
-David Vincent Gilbert
Have a vast amount of experience living in the Great depression, do you? No, you don't do you. Read all about it in Ethnic Gender studies, huh?
Name the government welfare programs that the burden doubled on please. Roosevelt's make-work programs were NOT welfare and did not appreciably halt unemployment or lessen the severity of the depression.
Most any country, prior to the turn of the century, had no government hand out programs or, were they not civilized?
Agree or disagree with the following statement:
A reduction in the overall tax rate will increase government tax revenue.
Sorry, trick question. It's already been proven.
No, it is her Planet of the Apes make-up.
makes sense with all the fertilizer her husband generates
Do they really have Hawaiian Pizza now? I love Canadian Bacon and pineapple!
Remember the last scene in "Thelma and Louise"?
I'd love to see the two of them drive off the top of a mesa in a convertible.
Considering her size, it is a LARGE national spotlight…
(ducking and running)
Can you say; "How now brown cow"! Perhaps the Brown Cow will promote smoking cigs as a great way to fight obesity since the Snake oil salesman continues to puff away and my gosh, look how skinny he is. lol
Switzerland has more of a direct democracy than ancient Athens in some ways, since only 10% of Athenians could actually vote.
The Romans had a system, before Gaius Julius Caesar and the Triumvirate slaughtered the Republic, where the Senate would vote on a law, and then all citizens would, one year later, vote to confirm the law. Since "citizen" usually meant free males in Rome when Rome controlled less than Italy and free male Italians when Rome ruled most of Europe, it was still less democratic, in one sense, than the Swiss.
I don't want my comments to be misinterpreted especially by someone in your situation or by someone who is handicapped and cannot work I know people who scam the system, live in the same house and collect 2 welfare checks plus 2 food cards. PLUS the proverbial 48" flatscreen. WE pay for these people and they DO NOT CARE if their family is obese. The booze and the twinkies are more important. If you know how to work the system, then you are set for life.
All of them, for all time? With not a single example of what is proposed by my opposition?
I believe Demosthenes before I believe someone classless enough to have a middle finger for an avatar.
just did…feel alot better.
maybe all of Obamas damage stems from the fact that he has to look at her without a wig and makeup and ugh…no clothes
You said it. I could give horror stories about the Indian Hospitals (which I won't use… and no, I'm not on any dole). These Liberal Genocide Centers are what leftist swine wish to push on everyone.
Too bad more people don't have the personal pride you obviously possess.
Unfortunately we are now working on a third generation of people who have adjusted and accepted this style of living. And as you so aptly observed it is not a great way to live. The answer is not to give them more though.
MikAyatollah, is that you?
Exactly…!
So you would support all Americans getting a cut of the mineral wealth of Alaska, and of Texas?
There's no law that says mineral wealth in Wyoming goes to citizens of Wyoming. Alaska just does it because they have a tough time keeping people in the State, because it is so darn cold, and expensive to get fresh veggies.
Welfare used to be called THE DOLE, before that, there were the work houses in England, first run by the church and then taken over by the government. Those living there, had to actually WORK for their meager food, lodging, and clothing.
Government "welfare" is a modern concept, not as you claim, thousands of years old! Sure some the ancient civilizations handed out some foodstuffs, it just wasn't anything like you are alluding to.
The ancient Hebrews allowed the poor to come into the privately owned fields to pick up whatever scraps were left, after the harvest and there was the "widows' mite"; however, it is also in the OT :"those who will not work, shall not eat."
Joshua, you truly don't know much history at all ! get off the computer, go get a bunch of books and learn something.
I'd be careful. Someone will scream racist.
Why doesn't Texas do this with its oil wealth?
Why don't all the states with underground deposits (for example, the largest copper mine in the world in Utah) hand money over to their citizens… citizens who did nothing at all to raise the mineral wealth from the ground?
I get a kick out of seeing fat people order the big mac, large fries and a giant 'diet' cola.
Excellent article. I am wondering how exactly using Blacks and Mexicans as the sole example of fat lazy welfare recipients, while stating at the same time that whites don't have much of a problem makes a point other than sounding like a racist though… Some excellent points were made in the article, but using statistics that imply that only minorities are fat and abusing welfare gives all the lefties out there a relatively legitimate reason to scream racist like they always do, rather than pay attention to the substance of the discussion.
We shouldn't do much that Saddam did, since we are a form of Republic, while he was a Tyrant. Saddam had no taxation (effectively, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit) and he was really tough on crime (Baghdad was one of the safest cities in the world).
He ran the program, the largest food distribution program in the world, for more than a decade. Sorry if I confused you by mentioning 2002 in particular.
Civilized countries have welfare, and always have. There were far more poor in ancient Egypt than just the slaves.
For you I expand the question… name a civilized country without welfare _or_ crime whose example we should follow.
Thanks in advance.
I am beginning to believe that this administration of narcissists deliberately takes issue with the most superficial issues that confront this country while seemingly willfully ignoring the most serious.
Just how inane is this White House going to become, I ask you? They're simply hell-bent on diverting attention in order to dumb us down and working overtime to do it.
The dole is exactly what translators of Demosthenes "On Organization" called it. Handing out food stamps instead of food is simple an efficient way to do things, and if the Pharaohs or Athenians had had a good system for fraud prevention they would have done it, too.
You are free to attempt to name one civilized country in the history of the world without any form of welfare, or the dole, but I think you are going to wind up only being able to name a few countries which lived by enslaving foreign populations.
"Killing them softly, with compassion."
That's exactly what they're up to, Keeper. And she'll use her own children with which to bat us.
Poor white free males couldn't vote in ancient Rome.
Ancient Rome was NEVER a "DEMOCRACY". IT WAS A REPUBLIC !
As the Ancient Roman Empire grew, anyone, not a slave, was a citizen !
The more you post, Joshua, the more you prove just how little you know.
Wow, takes some pretty creative thinking to connect obesity to sex and abortion. Mmm, think we might actually solve more problems if we stay on task. Obesity rates in the US have risen significantly from the 60's across all races. Let's start there. Look at your family, your friends, the amount of big gulps accompanying the hours of screen time for children. How many people in your circle attend weight watchers? Diet books are flying off the shelves.
Can we agree that obesity is an issue across all races and classes. I really don't think we have to make every issue a political one.
Seriously – what are the toppings? Spam and pineapple? I lived on Oahu and the real Hawaiians loved Spam , there is a cook book for it I have seen from there.
I'll tell you one thing she's had…lots of facial plastic surgery, all since the campaign (check the difference then and now). I have no problem with plastic surgery, but why do I think it might have been charged to us?
why is breakfast even being served at school? hundreds of millions of americans didn't implode when breakfast was a meal to be had before school. this is not to say that you're wrong on criticizing the offerings ; ) not many things beat eggs when it comes to nutrition and cost (although obummer did a nice quiet behind the scenes attack on the egg industry several months ago)
Please read the following before you opine on the causes of obesity. You will come away vastly enlightened.

You will also find out that you are right that the govt. has indeed been to a significant degree responsible for a lot of the obesity problem, but not in ways that you mentioned above. The book is about science and evidence, not conventional wisdom, so only read if you are prepared to learn.
Otherwise, I think Andrew Breitbart is a genius. Thank God for him.
An interesting note here is that white welfare recipients who are morbidly obese, spend much more time on the welfare roles and have a much harder time finding work, than do black women who are morbidly obese.
White "women are less likely to work at any survey wave, spend a greater percentage of months between waves receiving cash welfare, and have lower monthly earnings at each wave."
http://www.eric.ed.gov/ERICWebPortal/custom/portl...
It would be interesting to note the percentage of obese children under obese white and black welfare moms. If there is a correlation between finding work and raising healthier kids, that would mean white obese women have even more fat kids than black obese women.
During which ear?
Not a single European nation had welfare of any kind in the Dark or Middle Ages.
The church handled giving money to "the poor" well into the Victorian era and didn't do a good job of it.
Would you list a book list, Joshua?
