Progressives in America
by Josie WalesAlexis de Tocqueville traveled to the United States of America in 1831 on assignment from the French government to study the American prison system. One result of those travels was a rather prophetic study of American society, “Democracy in America.” The study consists of two volumes. The first considers American political society, and the second considers American civil society. The entire study is a must read, but my focus is on one of the last chapters.
What Sort of Despotism Democratic Nations Have to Fear
It would seem that, if despotism were to be established amongst the democratic nations of our days, it might assume a different character; it would be more extensive and more mild; it would degrade men without tormenting them.

In essence, the sort of despotism we might find in America today would not be of the sort found in ancient Rome or imperial Russia. The tyrants exercising that sort of despotism were confined to tyranny upon the ruling classes. The vast majority of people would have been unaffected by the actions of one tyrant to another because they were not a source of power. Democracies derive their power from the people, which means despotism cannot exist openly, but that it also affects more people. It becomes “soft despotism,” operating both in the name, and at the expense, of the people.
For their happiness such a government willingly labors, but it chooses to be the sole agent and the only arbiter of that happiness; it provides for their security, foresees and supplies their necessities, facilitates their pleasures, manages their principal concerns, directs their industry, regulates the descent of property, and subdivides their inheritance: what remains, but to spare them all the care of thinking and all the trouble of living?
If that statement does not describe the progressive-statist agenda, I do not know what does. Ever since the progressive movement began its push for social engineering funded by income taxation, government has extended its tendrils into every aspect of our lives. Bit by bit, the administrative state has expanded its grasp over the last century. And all of this has culminated in socialized medicine: government regulation over our very lives.
An association for political, commercial, or manufacturing purposes, or even for those of science and literature, is a powerful and enlightened member of the community, which cannot be disposed of at pleasure, or oppressed without remonstrance; and which, by defending its own rights against the encroachments of the government, saves the common liberties of the country.
This does not mean organizations like ACORN, Project Vote or the Secretary of State Project. These groups work for the expansion of government at the expense of liberty by promising false prosperity to the less fortunate in exchange for a vote. Instead, think Tea Party or Citizens United (2010). If anything, organizations that align themselves too closely to government should be viewed with extreme skepticism. Think “too big to fail” or SEIU.
It is therefore most especially in the present democratic times, that the true friends of the liberty and the greatness of man ought constantly to be on the alert, to prevent the power of government from lightly sacrificing the private rights of individuals to the general executions of its designs.
We were caught sleeping at the wheel. During President George W. Bush’s administration, the rhetoric of the progressives espoused the ideas presented in the previous quote. But rhetoric is merely the art of communication, and is separate from the critical thinking involved with logic. Many Americans, lulled to sleep by the “soft despotism” of the administrative state, assumed they were acting in the interest of liberty by electing the likes of President Barack H. Obama, and believed “transformative democracy” was a way to re-establish alleged liberties lost.
It is ever to be feared that revolutionary tendencies, becoming more gentle and more regular, without entirely disappearing from society, will be gradually transformed into habits of subjection to the administrative authority of the government.
Our rights exist outside of the government, or rather, the government is not the guarantor of our rights. As I have argued before, the right to free speech is not guaranteed by the 1st Amendment, but rather, the 1st Amendment precludes government intervention in our pre-existing right to free speech. The 9th Amendment reads: “The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people” (emphasis added). The message of “transformative democracy” championed by progressives represents the gentle revolution of subjugation for which de Tocqueville forewarns.
I have sought to point out the dangers to which the principle of equality exposes the independence of man, because I firmly believe that these dangers are the most formidable, as well as the least foreseen, of all those which futurity holds in store; but I do not think they are insurmountable.
And they are not!
Americans are re-awakening to the promises of liberty established and promoted from the founding of our nation.
I close with the final sentence of “Democracy in America”:
The nations of our time cannot prevent the conditions of men from becoming equal; but it depends upon themselves whether the principle of equality is to lead them to servitude or freedom, to knowledge or barbarism, to prosperity or wretchedness.

It sure as hell won't happen again.
As there are many wakening up can tell you all there are as many if not twice as many people still asleep. I try to spread the word to those informed but when i mention certain names or even the progressive movement people are still in the dark. It is not something you can just explain. Heck its taken a year for it to come to the surface. A year ago we were saying hardcore dems/libs now we realize in reality these people are progressives.
This is a vicious movement many associate themselves with not realizing where it is rooted and its true dark side. I honestly believe there is really only a handful of people who truly get it; it is a lot like the Matrix some know something is up they get it, but only few actually see the code and are broken out. The worst part about this IMO is the proggies prey on the peoples weak points, the handout programs. You want to win people over give them something for nothing (we all know this isnt true) but for the weak hey this is a great thing leave me be! Useful idiots are the proggies prey, they can move mountains with these people and in the coming mos they will engage the largest group, illegals!
How do we stop this machine?
I can tell you, and those who have followed my words know what is coming…. you cannot stop this machine with phone calls, emails, faxes, protests. The proggies know this they ignore it and 3/21/10 proved my position on this to be true. You are going to have to cross the line within yourself to affect real change. Be warned they are banking on someone breaking through and going to the extreme, they are banking on violence; they will incite it. I have a theory its long so I will not discuss here all I can tell you is their puzzle pieces are coming together, something big is brewing and violence is the trigger. YOU MUST stand down no matter what and where ever you go to protest etc you must have a camera rolling.
These people are dangerous, truly dangerous. Do not trust anyone at any event you do not know vet them on the spot esp those carrying or chanting questionable material. So what do we do? We must take the "fight" to them, to their front door if need be, peaceful within the rule of law. The bigger question is what are you prepared to do? If you are not prepared to engage in out of the box unconventional tactics, again peaceful within the rule of law, then you are wasting your time.

Who is not experiencing and seeing the wretchedness of this administration?
When I first heard Obama give the keynote address at the DNC convention, I was impressed and considered he was speaking a new path of nationalism – that we are all Americans, not to be segregated into our respective interest groups of power or isolated benefit.
When I began reading about his life and ideology, it became quite apparent that his keynote speech had the same properties as his campaign behavior and actions in the Senate – misleading, lying, mischaracterizing those who oppose him, and basking behind the mask of charade in order to fool the majority into what they normally would not choose to do if truthfully informed.
The only way to get the power out of D.C. is for all States to take the power back– through your State Legislators one by one. Be sure to vote for a Conservative Constitutionalist Governor in November. Look at the progress that has been made in such a short time in New Jersey. There is no way for us "little people" to make any progress to take our Country back from the Feds without the States asserting their rights to make their own laws and ignore the Federal Government's overreach into the State's affairs. The States would be acting in a Constitutional manner to take back their authority for their people. It is the only way to get the process moving by "WE THE PEOPLE". Let's all make sure we vote a Governor who will fight for State's rights in November. The Consitution gives the States rights–not the Federal Government.

The amount of CO2 man has contributed over the last century amounts to a fart compared to the volcanic ash cloud that engulfed the European continent from one eruption. Life needs CO2, the fact that we have to debate this shows how far liberals have regressed. Historians will look back at this period as the era of stupidity. There is something we can do……………..

After that he takes the subway cause he blew his unemployment check on dope and booze. After getting off the subway he goes to visit his lady in the housing project. She is at home during the day because she's on the disability cause she hurt her hand when the cashier at the bodego slammed the money drawer shut while his lady's hand was in it. After they smoke up, hey no problem her 4 kids are asleep, he takes her disability check down to the racetrack to try his luck with the ponies. After that is gone he's pretty tired so he thumbs a ride back to his folks house. When they ask him why he looks so tired he tells them that looking for a job is just wearing him out. His goes back to his cot in the basement, fires up the Mac his dad gave him and logs on to BigG to troll a little while before the ludes hit him and he passes out.

I do wonder what Tocqueville had in mind when predicting the state that would facilitate citizens' pleasures. Arguably, the government striking down old time morals legislation was an example of helping people enjoy themselves. When self-destructive behaviors then flourish, the government steps in to solve the problem its permissive attitudes helped create. This results in far more government intervention than the older prohibitions did.
It's not the nanny state, exactly, it's the state as "cool mom" or "cool parent," as James Poulos notes. It'll liquor you up, pay for detox, and tell you how great and free you are!
Let's remember Tocqueville meant a lot more than the Tea Party or Citizens United when talking about community associations. The welfare state grows faster if people don't look to their neighbor's welfare. This is how individualism and statism worsen each other. If we're too individualist, we won't shore up the good non-government civic groups necessary for a free republic.

You hold a Platonic Philosophy of Politics, that you and others can conceive of an ideal and that this ideal then is what government should be responsible for enforcing. This mentality creates a downward spiral that ends in a nation destroyed by it's own dead weight.
You and your friend are incapable of holding onto the Socratic/Aristotelian Philosophy of Politics, that no individual can know of a situation unless they are in that situation and being in that situation can only use their inductive and deductive reasoning to resolve the challenge. This individualism combined with Free Markets will always resolve human distress better than any central planning or perfected ideal, no matter how smart the king.

Please take a moment and think about your philosophy. It does not work. It will not work. It cannot bring GENERAL WELFARE to all.

The story is creepy and stupid. Because many of these things don't work as well as you think they do, including Fannie and Freddie, or unions (public or private), or Social Security.
This all leads my friends, to, Unions, which my Idealist side tends to favor, however, history shows, it is an impossibility. The problem is, I believe, motivation, and the difficulty to stand out and be promoted. By and large, when on this kind of safe track, it becomes a job, and hourly job. A little of us dies when we are tethered to fixed wage and hourly work.
