President Obama Promotes OFA Astroturf Campaign (with Bonus Plagiarism)
by John SextonOrganizing for America (formerly Organizing for Obama) has a Health Reform Action page which encourages members to write a letter to the editor. After typing in your zip code you get a list of local news outlets with radio buttons you can click:
The next page gives you a large comment box to compose your letter and in the sidebar are a list of suggested talking points:
Lest you think this is some minor effort, Barack Obama himself put out the call for people to use this tool on his Facebook page:
Despite the warning on the OFA site, letters containing these exact talking points are now appearing in newspapers across the country. The line about the new study appears in letters sent to the following papers:
- North County Times, and another letter, same paper
- Milford Daily News
- Times of Trenton
- Salisbury Post
- Marin Independent Journal, and another letter, same paper
- Lansing State Journal
- LaCrosse Tribune
- Southeast Missourian
- Lancaster Online
- Oakland Tribune
- Santa Maria Times
- Missouri News-Leader
- Sun Chronicle
- Pittsburgh Press Republican
- Sioux City Journal
- St. Cloud Times
- Naples News
- Lehigh Valley Opinion
- South Washington County Bulletin
- Topeka Capital Journal
- South Bend Tribune
- Hawaii Tribune
- Tulsa World
- Tracy Press
- Fredricksburg Free Lance Star

- Columbus Dispatch
- Huntsville Times
- Modesto Bee
- Ventura County Star

As a sidebar, this talking point did not even originate with OFA. It appears to originate in a USA Today story by John Fritze dated February 4th, that’s six days before Obama’s Facebook posting. Fritze’s article reads:
…health care spending rose to an estimated $2.5 trillion in 2009, or $8,047 per person, according to the report. That number will grow to $4.5 trillion in 2019…
Organizing for America offers this nearly identical version…
…health care spending rose to an estimated $2.5 trillion in 2009, or $8,047 per person—and is now projected to nearly double by 2019.
OFA doesn’t credit Fritze anywhere on the site. So not only have they plagiarized the line themselves but, as you can see from the list above, OFA also helped more than three dozen supporters plagiarize it as well. Who is responsible? Well, here is a letter/press release on OFA letterhead with all of these talking points signed by OFA Director Mitch Stewart. It is dated just a couple days after John Fritze’s article.
Moving right along and without repeating any news outlets or individual letters, talking point two appears at:
- Times of Northwest Indiana
- Honolulu Star Bulletin
- Beacon News
- Traverse City Record-Eagle
- Patriot News
- Post Tribune
- Savannah Morning News
- Argus Leader
And point three, the one about kicking this down the road:
Talking point four (again, no duplicates):
- Daily Herald
- Vicksburg Post
- Greeley Tribune
- Brainerd Dispatch
- Herald Dispatch
- Chattanooga Times Free Press
- Baltimore Sun
- Macon Telegraph
- Tifton Gazette
- Oakland Press
- Post Independent
- Macomb Daily
- Daily Press
- Union Democrat
- Daily Democrat
I could keep going, but you get the point. By my count, that’s 72 local papers in all that were duped into publishing OFA talking points (some more than once).
This campaign, organized by the Director of OFA and promoted by the President himself, is a clear case of Astroturfing (fake grassroots). That would be bad enough, but the fact that the most popular talking point appears to have been plagiarized makes it even more shocking.
As I recall, a few months ago there was a lot of talk about Republican nihilism, i.e. that the right would stop at nothing to win. In light of this nationwide effort by OFA, I think we can now ask the corollary: Is there any level to which the President and his supporters won’t stoop for a win?

The lies, twisting, deception, plaigarism, and more lies are beyond comprehension. And they continue to sucker people in with all of that BS!!
Thank God they are being called out on it and revealed by so many now, and all we can do is continue to spread the truth, and grow the opposition one person at a time each.
Yep, that's one sixth of the economy all right. But the original article by John Fritze makes it seem that no one is getting anything for that money. And someone in this administration sure knows how to use the media, don't they? Form letters to the editor all across the country. Wasn't there a single woman who appeared in dozens of newspapers (with local addresses) with the same basic Obama cheer-leading? I forget. So much news. So little time.
Intellectual dishonesty is the cornerstone of this administration. How can this country contain so many brain dead people? Oh that's right they destroyed our school system first.
I feel like I am now living in a George Orwell novel. These people are so drunk with power that they have convinced themselves that everyone in America, except them, is an idiot. I am very frightened.
Mao is good,….
Mao is great,……
Mao is our father,……..
OK,………..fellow Democrats,…….repeat after me,………
Obama is,…………………………………..
It gets more frightening by the day.
If it were not for the new media, the web, etc., more people would continue to believe this nonsense. And even more important – fewer people read newspapers. We've learned not to trust old media and are now more proactive about finding answers ourselves. Another major factor is that the Left always underestimates the will and intelligence of the people; this is their Achilles' Heel. Granted, their campaign of misinformation has been very successful within education, and within the last decade reached a peak of propaganda that would make Stalin proud. Opponents were even too intimidated to defend themselves. But no more. The left is coming down from their high; they're hungover and desperate to get it back. They're like an adolescent closet addict who's been discovered stealing money out of mom's purse for years. Now they're utterly transparent – time for an intervention.
Maybe we should all take one or two of the papers on that list and write our
own letters to the editor….Wonder if anti-healthcare letters would be published?
Herr Joseph Goebbels would have been proud of this effort to rally the mis-informed, the enslaved entitlement class, and the downright ignorant to promote this healthcare hoax nationally. Obama's supporters still believe that healthcare is a "right" and it should be free. Healthcare is a "good". Obama sold this garbage and the moochers bought into it.
If the American people cannot learn from past mistakes, they will have the enormous regret of repeating them!!!!
Fear is the mind-killer. [Thanks to Frank Herbert in Dune.] In Revelations God tells us not to let our hearts be troubled for these things must happen. It is also written that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. According to the Strong's Concordance the word "fear" can also be translated reverence. I know this is not easy. We will all be grateful when this time has passed that we were allowed to be a part of this moment in the history of the world.
Organizing for America (formerly Organizing for Obama)
…..and we wonder where ACORN learned it from
This sh1t is scarey … brainwashing for America !!!!
Let's all thank Al Gore, for inventing the Internet!
If not for the Internet, these fools would've had socialized medicine, cap and trade and no telling what else WRITTEN INTO LAW well before now.
And I know, of course, that Al Gore never invented anything at all, much less the Internet. He didn't even invent the global warming scam (That was done by Schneider, Holdren and the eugenicist Margaret Mead, in 1975, in North Carolina).
Good suggestion and I'm planning to do so after I write this because one of them was listed in my local paper. Please, EVERYONE else do the same! Maybe the papers will have the guts to post our letters refuting the others and exposing them for the propoganda that they are.
Our opponents are so conniving, most ordinary Americans cannot fathom the extent of their
tentacles reaching throughout our government. Whatever we do in the next few days will make
or break this grass roots movement called TEA Party. Even Senators & Representatives are
calling for us to converge on DC for he rest of the week, through Sunday. In your lifetime have
you ever seen or heard this type of call from DC to the people of the Nation?
According to Beck, Christopher Horner's FOI request on White House revealed e-mails to the
Center for American Progress, requesting permission & advice on responding to attacks on EPA/
AGW . WTF?????
Is this legal????
I think we should BURY them in letters, so if they actually do print the 'pro' letters, at least
we clearly have defined our enemy. Many of these newspapers are 'tools of the devil' & it's
about time we gave them the opportunity to reveal same.
how do we know he wasn't fed his study from tinkerbell rahm, or one of his naked shower mates? perhaps they were fed the story in a fax machine, and then the white house went into action. so it would appear that they didn't make this up, but got it from a "credible" news organization?
Morgen and John are 3,000% correct.
Once a community organizer, always a community organizer obviously.
Yesterday he managed to fill out an NCAA bracket on TV, asked Americans to write to newspapers (and then told them what to say), oh, and he embarrassed himself on National TV doing his first non-scripted interview since he took the office. Some president we have here.
You would think these twits would have learned by now…
Highlight and copy the "money statement", paste it into Google, and hit "Search"…
Why, looky there…
God, please keep these people stupid just a bit longer….we're trying to stop it, and we need your help…
With all due respect to Mr Vonegut. I am trying to collect the whole Slaughter House Five action set. I have; Slaughter, Pelosi, Obama, and Reed. I am not sure who the last one will be, I am guessing it will be Bidden when he over rules the Senate Parlimentarian. Any thoughts?
Here is how the bill reads.

So if I'm understanding this right, all those who support this takeover need to be told what to say? Just goes to prove that not a one of them can think for themselves, present a logical argument in favor of this so they are fed the words. Cute. Bunch of freakin lazy bums, can't even use their brains on their own – how could we expect them to do anything for themselves!
The people at OFA have to have things spelled out for them, they are as dumb as a box of rocks.
Otherwise they wouldn't support Obama and Obamacare.
i am robot, beep, beep, beep….
Tell your local newspaper that if they publish propaganda you will not buy it or advertise in.
It is amazing and disappointing that a well organized minority can rule the majority. Several humorous and powerful cartoons on corruption and healthcare process at http://drawfortruth.wordpress.com/category/health...
This is why they only excelled in TRUE / FALSE tests.
Kind of makes you wonder what "brainchild" invented Oblammo? My guess would be some subversive mentality—and since the "sheeple" bought into it —were stuck with thes geniuses!

That was my thought, inundate them with letters….Overwhelm them, isn't that the
strategy Obumble and friends are using?….
Terrific! From "talking points" to Think-by-Numbers Letter Writing campaigns! We are truly down the rabbit hole now, people! Pass the mushrooms!
And, just knowing that there's a BAILOUT BILL floating around the halls of our Capitol to save these failing newspapers that run with this stuff lock stock and barrel makes me fume….
Simple solution for conservatives to this blatant corruption. Go to the OFA website, put in your zipcode, then select all your local papers and write a rebuttal instead of the OFA talking points. If they want to provide the tools then we can use them to support what we want to get across.
SoreHoles
Nice tool. I just used it to send an email to all of the local newspapers… warning them of the Astroturf attempt and to take any emails from that source with "a shaker of salt" (because a grain isn't enough).
Update: I just used their site to send this letter:
I am sure that many people are writing about the on-going debate about Health Care Reform. Unfortunately, our leaders in Washington appear to be more interested in controlling the system than with correcting the root causation. Instead of addressing issues, determining solutions, writing legislation, reading the legislation, then having their vote recorded; our representatives are hiding behind closed doors, making deals, and voting on a "rule" without writing, reading, nor voting on actual legislation. Is that what you expected when you voted for your Representative, Senator, or President? Is that what you really expected to occur? Did you expect that the cost of everything you need, not want, but need to live to get more and more expensive? Just as our NM government is increasing the cost of necessities for everyone, so to the federal government is adding to that increase in cost. Is this the Change that we Hoped would occur? Or is this a "man-caused disaster" in the making?
Either way, let your voice be heard by your fellow New Mexicans.
Update 2: Received a thank you from OFA, wonder how long until they realize that my letter did not support their position.
Not hardly,….here in Chicago the vast majority of the columnist are lefties,….
I have found E-mails is the most fruitful way to communicate with these clowns
