Ride That Third Rail
by Joel B. PollakDemocrats are celebrating their victory yesterday in the special election in New York’s 26th congressional district by touting it as a repudiation of House budget committee chair Paul Ryan’s proposal for Medicare reform.
Never mind that, as in NY-23 in 2009, Democrats needed a three-way race to win. Never mind that, also as in NY-23 in 2009, they needed one of those three candidates to be a second Democrat in disguise.
They’re not just proud of taking a Republican seat; they’re proudly claiming that they have made Medicare reform the “third rail” of American politics, together with Social Security.
Never mind that Ryan’s reforms poll better among seniors than any other age group. Never mind that Ryan’s proposals would not affect anyone over 55 years old–except by making sure Medicare is still there for them by the time they reach their 70s.
Convicted tax cheat and fraudster Robert Creamer, who is helping to lead Democrats’ Mediscare campaign, taunts Republicans in today’s Huffington Post, reminding them that it’s tough to get people to give up an entitlement once they depend on it. He predicts that Obamacare will last for the same reason, and that the GOP will be stuck arguing for “a society based on social Darwinism” where “we’re all in this alone.”
Creamer’s wrong about what NY-26 means for 2012–just like he was wrong about the 2010 elections, when he declared before Election Day that “Democrats will keep control of the House.” Candidates that have used Creamer’s scare tactics have often come to regret it–like Democrat Dan Seals in IL-10, for instance, who was up by 13% before taking Creamer’s advice and launching attack ads about Social Security before losing to Bob Dold.
Creamer always predicts victory in hyperbolic terms because he believes that “[i]f we act like winners, we’ll win.” He tries to appeal to primitive psychological instincts–and he is proud of it, just as he was proud to tell Democrats to use “fear, revulsion, anger, [and] disgust” in selling Obamacare. He doesn’t care about the consequences, to our politics and our finances, of misleading, demonizing, and scaring people. He just wants to win.
He won’t–if Republicans find the courage to defend their ideas.
Ryan has responded with an excellent new video about Medicare. Yet facts alone won’t win. Last year, when Ryan pointed out the false accounting in Obamacare, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz replied that as a breast cancer survivor, she didn’t care to get “in the weeds” with Ryan–she was just glad “being born a woman” would no longer be a “preexisting condition.”
Nor is it enough to tell Americans the hard truths. Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty has launched the “adult conversation” on our nation’s budget that President Barack Obama claims he wants to have (and has done everything to avoid). Pawlenty told an audience in Iowa that he opposes ethanol subsidies, for example, and told seniors in Florida about the urgent need to reform Medicare and Social Security. But “straight talk” didn’t work for John McCain in 2008, and it won’t be enough in 2012.
Republicans need more than truth to overcome the seductive power of identity politics and the primitive propaganda of Creamer and the left.
We need a proud, positive vision of what freedom does for the individual and for society, in the spirit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refreshing defense of liberty in Congress yesterday.
In short, we don’t need better budget proposals. (Democrats are certainly in no hurry to provide theirs.) We need the courage to turn the “third rail” of American politics into an ambitious debate about the future of freedom in America.
Let the Democrats celebrate their own cynicism in NY-26. The party that claims to love public transportation has forgotten that that the third rail is the one that gets the train to where it’s going.

The majority vote is NOT a tell all of effectiveness. A lot of us understand we are past the 51% tipping point, that 51% will vote to make 49% support them. Yes there could very well be a majority, even a super majority, that vote for more goodies from the gov coffers. This does not mean its right. Majority has never meant right. If that were the case slavery would be morally right.
That is why I think this political solution is a complete waste of time. Regardless of party, politicians and gov will always seek more power, more control and greater size. All you're doing is picking fast growth or super fast growth.
A collapse has to occur and a really painful one, something that makes 2009 look like a picnic. That is the only way real change will occur. Until people become more uncomfortable with the status quo than adapt to it we won't see any effective change.
These changes means we have to make any progressive safety net ineffective. We know they are ineffective anyway but instead of waiting around 20 years for that to show up we need to make it as glaring as possible. The best way to hurt progressives is go after their insecurity.

Much as I think Ryan and Pawlenty understand the problem and have worked to try to address it in the least painful and disruptive way, like others here I think that it will take cataclysmic failure and pain to get enough people out of their complacency. Hey Onthegroundforsomereason….I just called my credit card company and told them I cut up my card so I no longer have a balance. They said that I don't have a revenue problem and that if I throw the elderly out on the streets and deny them decent healthcare, my balance will go away magically. AWESOME!!! We don't have a revenue problem. we have a spending problem. Here let me use an analogy.
Lets say a household has a fat, wasteful, over spending wife who has maxed out all the credit cards on lattes, nails, shopping sprees, shoes, vacations etc. Now the family has $200k of credit card debt.
The dem solution is as follows:
1. Keep spending and get more credit cards cause those $100 hair appointments are OH SO important.
2. Make the husband go out an get a higher paying job or get two jobs and work to the bone.
3. Raid the kid's college fund.
4. Kite the debt by paying off the cards with other cards or loans from money tree.
5. Borrow from the china man down the block and make the son and daughter liable for the debt.
Here is the correct solution:
1. Cut up the credit card.
2. Sell as much crap as possible,
3. Cancel Direct TV, hair cuts, nail appointments, vacations.
4. Eat home made meals.
5. COUPONS.
6. Use every cent to pay down principle.
7. Wifey goes on a much needed diet.
If you read every single success story of families who get out of massive debt, THIS is what they do. They do not keep spending… they learn to live within their means.
BTW Bill Clinton with 10% less population ran the whole country on 2.3 tril. Seems like this could be done again. In fact even in 2008 we only ran a $200 bil deficit. We can go back to that.
But your plan is absurd if you think spending stays the same and only revenue increases because we ALL know the gov will never do anything responsible with the money just like the wife in my example should never be let near a credit card.

Well the money taken out of my check on a weekly basis and placed in my account with the Social Security Trust sure as hell isn't yours. As with most people here, you deal in vast generalizations, such as liberals don't pay their bills or don't have a job, etc. And you (generic) tend to deal in black and whites…all or nothings.
The correct solution is a mixture of both. Cut spending, and that includes closing tax loopholes for corporations, stop giving subsidies to oil companies, reduce the defense budget, get out of Iraq and Afghanistan, raise taxes on those who make over $500,000, tweak Medicare (work out a deal so the government can negotiate with big pharma for cheaper prescription drugs) start paying attention to our decaying infrastructure (a good way to create jobs), etc. Those are but a few suggestions.
