War Through Weakness: How the Terrorists Win
by James PaneroFor those who were expecting the election of Barack Obama to yield a peace dividend in the war on terror, the resurgence of Al-Qaeda has come as a surprise. Obama’s obsequious diplomacy was supposed to be a tonic to the aggressions of the Bush years, but his appeasement seems to have only encouraged more war. Rather than calm the Islamic world, Obama’s passivity has invited attack.
As in the Cold War, the current battle of ideology takes place in proxy wars. Unlike in the Cold War, the war on terror is largely fought through symbolic actions. Islamists do not make tactical attacks. They do not bomb Boeing factories or destroy highways and rail lines. Instead they destroy iconic buildings, trains, and airplanes. They use the spectacle of destruction, carried out in a diabolical way by suicide agents, as their means of waging war. That is the definition of a terror campaign.
The proper response to terror is not appeasement but counterattack. Islamists wage their terror campaigns in order to cow American influence abroad, especially in the Gulf. The answer to such attacks, if we hope to avoid them in the future, is to increase American involvement in Muslim countries both through soft influence and force of arms. Such a strategy was one of the best but least articulated justifications for the Second Gulf War.
Obama doesn’t get this. When the State department closed its embassy in Sanaa, Yemen for two days earlier this week due to intelligence of an imminent terrorist threat, this action only increased the existential threat to Americans in Yemen and abroad. It came off as a symbolic withdrawal of American influence, especially so close to the attempted Northwest airline bombing. The temporary closing betokened a myopic vision of the war on terror as an isolated series of security issues rather than an ideological battle fought through connected symbolic action.
All of the West’s technology and intelligence can never prevent would-be terrorists from penetrating our defenses. The only way to prevent terrorism is to make it clear that terror attacks will result in symbolic outcomes that are most advantageous to us and least advantageous to them. We need a Containment Policy for the 21st Century.

The Obama Administration could make a "symbolic" first step by asking the Sate Department to issue LESS visas to people from problematic Middle East countries as opposed to his current policy of issuing MORE visas to visitors from these countries. But for Obama it is far more important for him to be liked by the rest of the world than it is for him to be rational in his approach to keeping us safe.
You can not deal with irrational people. You can not make deals or appease them. They need to be killed.
This administration has little desire to deal with national defense or the economy. There are only 1100 days left to destroy the dollar. Destroying the dollar is the main objective of this administration. That should be obvious to all but the most casual observer.
With that done, he will pave the way for the new world order currency to control a very large part of our sovereignty.

This article is nonsense. No one bombed Boeing during the cold war. If there was ever direct engagement between the U.S. and the Soviets it was hushed up because neither side wanted unwarranted pressure to use the bomb.
Irregular warfare is as old as war itself and wasn't invented by Islamic terrorist. In fact, we were considered the terrorists in the Revolutionary War. We had very little interest in charging into the face of British fire until the advantage shifted to our side. We used secrecy and surprise attacks to gain advantage. Just as the terrorist use today.
To suggest Obama is not dealing with the terror threat head on it disingenuous at best, and misleading at worst. He is building our terror defense around intelligence networks and precision strikes at the heart of al Qaeda leadership. Then one day if they ever do mass for an attack we will be ready to attack… when the advantage turns to us.
Until Muslims make it uncomfortable for Jihadist Muslims to attack America, this will not stop. The only way to force Muslims to do this is to make them uncomfortable, by what ever means necessary. Bowing to them does nothing to accomplish this.

When the pantie bomber made his attempt at Christmas, when the successful suicide bomber killed 7 of our CIA agents. What did we(as a Nation) do? Did we get angry and say those trying to instill fear will be fought with our might? Or did we get all thoughtful and say – how can we prevent these accidents from happening? What about ourselves do we need to fix?
Preventive measures only go so far, you can never 100% guarantee the safety of any human endeavor.
Reasonable safety measures are necessary and good, but when your safety measures take your personal freedoms from you and still leave you in a perpetual state of fear, something is definitely amiss.
We are most assuredly on the wrong tract with our responses.
When the Jihadists attack us they do not fear retaliation from us, they laugh while Americans give up more of our freedoms. Europe did try this, it was called the Crusades but there was too much politics & ideology to be that effective. I have not seen a reasonable answer yet. Conventional warfare does not work because there are no standing armies to fight and the enemy doesn't follow the rules of engagement.
This is a war of espionage & gorilla tactics where the conventional rules of combat do not apply. The "we are better than that so we're not going to do it" mentality will not work. The only way to win this is by removing the restraints of the Articles of War and let the commanders & solders go, but Westerners do not have the stomach for this because there will be casualties, there will be atrocities, there will be innocent loss (collateral damages) but if we don't do it now, we will be forced to do it later & later may be too late. There are too many countries with nukes that are sitting in the line of firing, Pakistan, Israel, India, Turkey (shared nuclear deployment) with Iran close to joining them, if one of these decides to use them for defense or worse loses control of them/gives them to the terrorists, I guarantee all bets are off after the first Western city, like Rome, Berlin, Moscow, Paris or London is hit with a nuke.

But I'm curious as to why in an article titled "War through Weakness: How the Terrorists Win", with "Weakness" being the operative word, you believe Obama is the type of leader who "tells" anyone to do anything? My bet is that he "asks" his daughters to brush their teeth instead of "telling" them to do so. And I have no doubt this also holds true in matters concerning his wife.

That has been their goal: small engagements on several fronts to spread out our forces & keep us guessing where the next hit is coming from, strike & run, hide within the local populist, operate low tech to reduce detection, keep combat units small, light & fast, make the locals so scared that they are not willing to go against them through rapes, murders & maiming, run under local commands to keep the leadership protected, preach a corrupt ideology & use it to promote their agenda (I know, you can apply this to Democrats as well/sac) and the most dangerous, indirect attacks at our infrastructure through soft targets (9/11, bombing of U.S. Embassies, malls, aircraft, mass transit systems, etc.). This is the most dangerous because if they succeed or not technically, they have succeeded tactfully by make use spend more resources to protect them & cause us to question whether we can defeat them.
Our response: Make this a police action & not a war (No Deceleration of War has been passed in Congress), implement more restriction on combat personal than the U.S. has on police officers in executing their orders or protecting themselves, treat enemy combatants as if they are getting arrested for shoplifting (including the reading of the Miranda Act). Basically, the way our governments are running this mess now, they should be using graduates from Law Enforcement Academies than the military academies or boot camp.
As for how the terrorists view Obama; there have been more terror attacks against the U.S. in the last 12 months than between 9/11/01 & 1/20/2009.
